This has been started in response to the massacre and anti women manifesto by Elliot Rodgers. Makes for interesting reading...

I saw some of his output Brenda. He's all over the #YesAllWomen, isn't he. He accuses people of not having a sense of humour when they challenge him though why anyone should find assault, abuse and inequality funny, I don't know. Foul has-been.

RamsaySnowsSausage · 28/05/2014 18:34

What's your point sausage? That we should not talk about things that affect us (Twitter hashtag) or others (Rodger and the surrounding issues)?

That we shouldn't debate, discuss, support or raise awareness? Should we just shut up?

ReallyFuckingFedUp · 28/05/2014 18:42

And cross because it assumes things about me. I am not a weak victim, I am a strong person whi doesn't put up with any crap and am any man's equal.

Fuck you for calling victims weak.

I fucking hate the men hating loonies on here. You are all utterly pathetic, if you truly believe you are equal to men then it can't affect you.

And fuck you for spreading stupid.

Downamongtherednecks · 28/05/2014 19:20

magna, for many women, it is going to take more than self-belief to stop someone from cutting out their clitoris, or stoning them to death for being raped. It is great that you feel so strong, but perhaps that strength could be better directed towards understanding and helping women who DON'T have the ability to walk as tall as you do (and you are standing on the shoulders of the feminists who came before you).

22honey · 28/05/2014 19:30

'Grow a backbone stop pretending to be victims and live.'

Whilst this is rather harsh I have to kind of agree with what you are saying. Many posters on this forum appear to be like pigs in mud when basking in victim-dom and playing the helpless martyr.

Usually the only thing that in anyway elevates them to the victim status they so clearly crave is the fact they are a woman, otherwise they would be forced to accept their status as one of the most privileged groups in the world as from my experience most of this forum and most UK feminists are middle class, thus affluent and privileged compared to a huge percentage of the worlds population.

CaptChaos · 28/05/2014 19:30

A lot of the tweets said that they had spoken up for the first time. That their silence had ended. A lot of male allies and new male allies tweeted. I would like to think that it was the start of something. I like being optimistic though!

22honey · 28/05/2014 19:32

'Men are sexually violent towards women.'

No they arn't. Many men will be, some men will be, but men as a group are not sexually violent towards women. Stop attempting to spread such damaging nonsense that does nothing except enforce a them vs us mentality, which is self defeating.

22honey · 28/05/2014 19:37

'And cross because it assumes things about me. I am not a weak victim, I am a strong person whi doesn't put up with any crap and am any man's equal.

Fuck you for calling victims weak.'

She isnt saying that. She is saying she sees herself as and feels strong as a person, so has no need to adapt the victim mentality mindset a lot of posters on this forum have. I also feel as a true victim of violence it doesn't do me as a person any favours whatsoever remaining in victim-dom.

I know exactly what she means and I am a 'victim'.

22honey · 28/05/2014 19:47

' from cutting out their clitoris, or stoning them to death for being raped.'

you cannot ignore the huge influence of culture on this. it isnt a purely misogyny issue.

ReallyFuckingFedUp · 28/05/2014 19:50

Honey stop trying to explain to people. You're doing a crap job of it. She specifically says if you truly believe you are equal to men then it can't affect you. so in other words, if you don't want to be a victim you won't be. Victims are weak and just haven't got the mental fortitude to stop being victims.

ReallyFuckingFedUp · 28/05/2014 19:51

you cannot ignore the huge influence of culture on this. it isnt a purely misogyny issue.

Confused
22honey · 28/05/2014 19:51

' It exists because women are treated as inferior'

Should have stuck 'some' in there. Some women are treated as inferior (ie black women, mothers who live on benefits)

White, educated middle and upper class women are put on a pedestal in this society.

scallopsrgreat · 28/05/2014 19:52

Men as a class are violent towards women 22honey. That's how they keep women oppressed.

CaptChaos · 28/05/2014 19:52

Oh god, here we go again.

Downamongtherednecks · 28/05/2014 19:53

Some cultures are misogynistic. Not sure how easy it is to see them as separate issues. In some of the work I do (developing world), I am supposed to "empower women", but without a solid legal framework it's pretty pointless sometimes.

22honey · 28/05/2014 19:54

' if you truly believe you are equal to men then it can't affect you. '

I think this means it cant affect you if, like her, you have never been a victim of misogyny. Shes quite clearly talking about the victim mentality mindset many have here, not actual victims of male violence.

Don't be so rude.

scallopsrgreat · 28/05/2014 19:55

Yes some white middle class women are put on a pedestal, providing they of course keep within the narrow confines of what the patriarchy feel is acceptable. And of course anything on a pedestal can be pushed off again. I don't want to be on a pedestal especially not a pedestal manufactured by men. I just want to be equal.

Scarletohello · 28/05/2014 19:56

Honey, what is it with you? I frequently see you come on these threads and try to detail them. What's your agenda exactly?

OP posts:
22honey · 28/05/2014 19:57

'Men as a class are violent towards women 22honey. That's how they keep women oppressed.'

Yes, as a group, like women as a group are vulnerable. It still sounds like a mass generalization to anyone else though, which
doesnt do the cause any favours.

Yes, here we go again. I have the right to air my views, its unbelievably narcissistic to imply because someone has an opposing view, that they shouldn't air it. Why are you so convinced you are right about everything?

scallopsrgreat · 28/05/2014 19:57

But it can affect you 22honey, no matter how much positive thinking you do because there is always the undercurrent of violence.

scallopsrgreat · 28/05/2014 19:59

But you just said men as a group aren't violent Confused. It's called class analysis. There is an entire thread about it down the page.

22honey · 28/05/2014 19:59

'Some cultures are misogynistic. Not sure how easy it is to see them as separate issues. '

Err, maybe because it needs many more different areas dealing with first before misogyny. Religion for one.

No one is saying some cultures and religions arnt misogynistic. UK feminists stating this fact isn't going to change countries 1000s year old culture.

LoveSardines · 28/05/2014 20:00

honey

Your post

"' It exists because women are treated as inferior'

Should have stuck 'some' in there. Some women are treated as inferior (ie black women, mothers who live on benefits)"

But it wasn't your post to stick "some" in, someone else said it.

Why don't you allow that poster to explain what she meant, if she wants to. You second guessing what she meant and saying how she should have phrased her post is peculiar. You assume she meant to put "some" in there, but you don't actually know that, it's just what you would have meant. But she is not you. So why are you "explaining" her posts.

22honey · 28/05/2014 20:01

'But you just said men as a group aren't violent'

No I didnt. You said 'men commit violence against women'. That is a mass generalization. SOME men do. It doesn't even appear that MOST men do.

What if someone said 'women want rich, powerful men with status' - you would say its a mass generalization because only some women do.

22honey · 28/05/2014 20:02

'But it wasn't your post to stick "some" in, someone else said it. '

AND? what the actual fuck? My comment was that it should actually say some. That was my opinion.
