I mentioned before, some time last year, that my then 19-year old cousin (I'll call her Anne) had chosen to transfer out of her college due to their handling of a report of rape she made. In her case, the rapist was a "star athlete", and student athletes here in the States (whether it be college or high school) are often treated like gods. Especially when they're (American) football players (as was the case with Steubenville).
In Anne's case, her rapist was not a football player, but he did play the sport that was (well still is) the second highest money spinner for the college.
The college is Boston University, which I'm happy to name now, as it's now in the public domain. Back when I first mentioned it, it hadn't then gone public, so I didn't feel comfortable naming it.
Anyway, the fact that Anne had reported Mr Star Athlete became widely known (even at a college as big as BU), and rather than people turning against him, they turned against her. She had insults thrown at her, people SPAT at her, and she basically became a victim second time around.
Anne decided the best thing to do, was to transfer out, and attend college far away from Boston (which is her home city).
In a bitter and cruel twist of fate, the college she started at in Fall 2013, was University of California Santa Barbara, the very college the six of the victims of this tragedy were students at.
My daughters are 4 and almost a year-old, college is a long way off for them, and I just hope things are better for them when the time comes.
