Apologies if there has already been a thread on this.

Bj strap

I actually don't know what to say about this.

This thread is years old and inactive. If you've found this page in search of Ann Summers products that have been tried and tested by fellow Mumsnet users, you might find our guide to the best Ann Summers sex toys useful. Hope this helps! MNHQ 💐

I've worked for Ann Summers shudders at the memories and I soon found that it is a company completely run by men in suits. There wasn't 1 woman running the crooked company. That Jackie Gold twat is just a face for the company!

Dworkin · 21/03/2012 21:15

Excitingly flavoured condoms? You would suck that? And taste, and swallow, the chemicals?

Starwisher · 21/03/2012 21:16

Miss

Did you often get teenage girls frequenting Ann summers?
What were the most popular products?
Did you feel like women were pressurised by male partners to buy certain products?
What products did men generally choose?

What bothers me is that Anne Summers is high street, it's where teens who are just starting out on their sex lives go for a nose around.

I find this a really bizarre argument which a lot of people seem to have latched on to. You see, I would have thought that teens wouldn't be looking on the high street at sex toys first. Because teens get rather giggly and silly about the whole thing of going into 'shock horror' a sex shop! Nope if they are interested in looking at sex toys then where are going look first?

THE INTERNET.

If you google sex toys, then you get three sponsored links.
the first link is
www.bondara.co.uk
then its www.lovehoney.com
then its www.annsummers.com

The high street argument is totally redundant in view of this. Ann Summers is generally a lot more vanilla than both the other two links. If you have a problem with whats on sale at Ann Summers, then you really would have a problem with the other two.

At which point you are talking about banning an awful lot of stuff... and essentially censorship. And where do you actually draw the line. So much of this would be down to personal taste and sexual preferences. Who decides what is 'decent' and what isn't? You are talking about banning CONSENSUAL sexual practices here. The assumption that it is about abuse is equally bizarre. I know plenty of women who have confessed to enjoying certain acts.

Banning toys does not ban the practises. It does not stop abuse. It does not change attitudes that lie behind certain fantasies. And frankly I think its better to have toys designed for the purpose rather than homemade substitutes that have potential safety issues. (Michael Hutchence...)

SardineQueen · 21/03/2012 21:20

Dworkin, no. Yuk.

I don't object to them selling them though.

MissLofPubia · 21/03/2012 21:22

I did the parties, so no under 18's and no men! Most popular products were books and outfits :-) A lot of women were saying 'my man wants me to buy this'. But I think that was just a cover because they actually wanted it!

SardineQueen · 21/03/2012 21:22

But that's if you google sex toys.

To know to google sex toys, you need to have been introduced to them somewhere else. Like ann summers.

Also I think you will find that although many teens go silly with things to do with SEX they are also extremely interested.

Starwisher · 21/03/2012 21:22

Dworkin look someone is promoting sites with sexual content by linking. Quick, quick!

SardineQueen · 21/03/2012 21:23

And I don't think it's "latching on" to the idea, as much as "agreeing".

MissLofPubia · 21/03/2012 21:23

Most of the women booking the parties were middle-class and middle-aged (in my experience)

Beachcomber · 21/03/2012 21:24

I cannot abide the term 'vanilla sex'.

For reasons that I cannot be arsed to get into on this thread, but that I imagine the average feminist gets.

Starwisher · 21/03/2012 21:24

Miss so you would say most women were buying for their own pleasure?

SardineQueen · 21/03/2012 21:24

Oh god I went to an ann summers party once, it was horrendous. The woman was like a PE mistress and we all had to JOIN IN.

SardineQueen · 21/03/2012 21:25

AS parties are women only, star.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 21/03/2012 21:26

Sex toys... I seem to remember finding out about them from tv and film - not my local high street. Late night channel 4 was interesting viewing...

SardineQueen · 21/03/2012 21:26

And when I was there people were buying stuff because they were pissed and trying to out-do each other. I'm getting an 8 inch. Right I'M getting a 10 inch. That sort of thing.

Starwisher · 21/03/2012 21:26

I thought miss meant she worked in the retail store, hence asking about men.

Never been to a party, have no interest so wouldn't be up with the protocol.

Starwisher · 21/03/2012 21:27

I learnt about sex toys from cosmopolitan.

Starwisher · 21/03/2012 21:28

Competitive vibrator buying hey sardine?:)

MmeLindor. · 21/03/2012 21:28

I went to an AS party when I was 18yo and was utterly shocked at what was on offer.

And I remember even now the saleswoman's sales patter for a nightie with a big floaty skirt "if you are not in the mood, then just flip it over your head and think of England while he gets on with it".

I almost walked right out. And back then, I had no idea what feminism was.

SardineQueen · 21/03/2012 21:28

Where did you both learn about BJ straps?

Starwisher · 21/03/2012 21:30

I learnt about bj straps from this thread

MissLofPubia · 21/03/2012 21:31

Starwisher - I would say so yes. It was mostly women getting pissed and buying novelty items.

SardineQueen · 21/03/2012 21:31

mmelindor that is grim (the skirt).

TBH I think it is a bit sad if 18yo aren't shocked by mahoosive vibrators and anal lube and things.

HmmThinkingAboutIt · 21/03/2012 21:31

From Mumsnet...

Doing a great advertising for Ann Summers. I wonder if anyone has had a nosey elsewhere on their site.

And frankly, as I've said earlier Ann Summers is pretty vanilla.
