Even with quotation marks, I really loathe the use of "honour killing".

Talk about misuse of the word "honour"

No, how about your father wants to marry off your sister and she does not want an arranged marriage. What would you do?

edd1337 · 09/09/2011 20:28

Put me in that situation and i'd tell you

This situation however is different than having a husband with murderous intentions

Just answer the question. Would you help your father or your sister?

edd1337 · 09/09/2011 20:31

That only happens because of the liberals you voted in are doing it. Not to mention prisons are overcrowded and they seem to be reducing sentances for EVERYONE. Women also get less jail time

edd1337 · 09/09/2011 20:33

Crackfox i'm not 100% on how their system works. There's lots to factor in here. I genuinly do not know

The best I could do is look after my sister the best way possible. Get my father to do as much background research as possible

TheCrackFox · 09/09/2011 20:33

How do you know who we voted for? Confused

edd1337 · 09/09/2011 20:34

I'm just guessing :P

Probably because feminists seem to hate capitalism thus labour = socialist so they'd get your vote (and Harriet Harman is a feminist)

TheCrackFox · 09/09/2011 20:34

What kind of background research?

edd1337 · 09/09/2011 20:35

Depends what resources are available. Talk to people etc

nailak · 09/09/2011 20:36

dittany, its bad, its terrible, they are evil, what else is there discuss?

the fact is if i am not convinced of the premise that it is males that perpetuate the concept of izzat due to experiences i have had in my own life in which i have seen women apply this concept more then men, then i need convincing.

i am voicing my doubts in order that people can come forward with counter arguements, that is how discussion works?

i am not denying that men are violent to women. off course they are. off course they are killing their wifes and daughters. and no one can defend it in anyway.

so what can we do to stop it?

why does it happen?

why do some people in the culture do it and others wouldnt think of it?

Wamster · 09/09/2011 20:36

OK, dittany,

I can tell you what I think the right thing from a logical viewpoint would be to do. This is NOT to say that I would have the guts to do it myself or that I would criticise any other women for failing to do it.

But I am talking about the right thing to do from a 'head' viewpoint.

Like all bullies, the patriarchal system relies on nobody complaining, if one person complains, the bully ups the bullying (hence the rise in 'honour' killings) , if more and more people complain then at some point enough people will have complained, then eventually the bully will be brought down.

Beachcomber · 09/09/2011 20:36

Wamster you said this;

Sadly, Beachcomber, there will be a rise in honour killings it would be an inevitable reaction, wouldn't it? Once an abused party stands up against the abuser, the abuser ups the ante.

So you do get it.

Go back and read the Amnesty International document I linked to earlier. Actually I'll save you the bother, here you go;

"Every year hundreds of women are known to die
as a result of honour killings. Many more cases go
unreported and almost all go unpunished. The
isolation and fear of women living under such
threats are compounded by state indifference to
and complicity in women's oppression. Police
almost invariably take the man's side in honour
killings or domestic murders, and rarely prosecute
the killers. Even when the men are convicted, the
judiciary ensures that they usually receive a light
sentence, reinforcing the view that men can kill
their female relatives with virtual impunity. Specific
laws hamper redress as they discriminate against
women.
The isolation of women is completed by the almost
total absence of anywhere to hide. There are few
women's shelters, and any woman attempting to
travel on her own is a target for abuse by police,
strangers or male relatives hunting for her. For
some women suicide appears the only means of
escape."

Some fucking choice.

Wamster · 09/09/2011 20:42

dittany, I'm sorry but I am taken it as a given that these men do not wish to change a system that favours them.

Very few people do.

This has nothing to do with derailing.

Wamster · 09/09/2011 20:44

The choices they may make are against women, but it suits them, so they are not going to change it. The only thing that will make them change is:

a, Others protesting (in a very broad sense of the word
b, Punishment

They are not suddenly going to wake up and change of their own accord, are they?

Wamster said;

"Like all bullies, the patriarchal system relies on nobody complaining, if one person complains, the bully ups the bullying (hence the rise in 'honour' killings) , if more and more people complain then at some point enough people will have complained, then eventually the bully will be brought down."

Ok how about we change that a little?

Like all killers bullies, the patriarchal system relies on nobody sacrificing themselves complaining, if one person complains, the killer bully ups the killing bullying (hence the rise in 'honour' killings) , if more and more people complain then at some point enough people will die have complained, then eventually the killer bully will be brought down. i just don't want to have to be one of the complainers who dies

Well neither do the women in Pakistan, India, etc. want to be one of the women who dies.

Are you familiar with the expression 'doing what you have to, to survive in the patriarchy'?

You sure as hell should be with all the women blaming you do.

Same goes for handmaiden...
