Even with quotation marks, I really loathe the use of "honour killing".

Talk about misuse of the word "honour"

There are facilities for violent men (prison) so there is no excuse in this day and age for men to be hitting women.

Nice accusation there SGM. You know exactly what I meant you just chose to twist my words

Wamster · 09/09/2011 20:12

Sadly, Beachcomber, there will be a rise in honour killings it would be an inevitable reaction, wouldn't it? Once an abused party stands up against the abuser, the abuser ups the ante.

edd1337 · 09/09/2011 20:12

Well crackfox, there ya go. There's consequences to some actions, unlike certain countries

TheCrackFox · 09/09/2011 20:12

Maybe you could explain further what you actually meant? In what way are we mor civilized in the UK?

edd1337 I agree that countries where honour killings do not occur (or occur on a much, much, much smaller scale) are more civilised than ones where honour killings occur.

Ok lets try again

UK: A woman can have an affair and nothing much will happen
Bangladesh: A woman can have an affair and be whipped to death

See the difference?

madam52 · 09/09/2011 20:18

But dont the newsreaders usually say 'so-called' honour killings. Unless they've dropped that of late which I dont think they should.

Wamster · 09/09/2011 20:19

I just do not understand the logic, really I do not, in the hierarchy of patriarchal systems, the UK is probably the least oppressive to women as compared to other countries where the regime is definitely more oppressive to women, yet when a poster says that the UK is more civilised than these countries- which in the context of women's rights it most certainly is they get picked up on. It's ludicrous.

Oh, like this story on the front of my local paper. She had the temerity to have a new boyfriend.

I mean how can a feminist think that Bangladesh is more civilised than the UK if it allows a woman to be whipped to death for an affair? It makes no sense.

edd1337 · 09/09/2011 20:22

Right SGM, except here the man can go to prison, over there they wont

This is what you don't seem to understand

Beachcomber · 09/09/2011 20:22

Well do you get it or not Wamster?

The women speak out - more of them die.

And you are blaming them for propping up the status quo why then?

LRDTheFeministDragon · 09/09/2011 20:22

Wamster, feminists don't struggle to think. This may be the part you, OTOH, are having problems with. HTH.

Wamster · 09/09/2011 20:22

dittany how the fuck would I know what I'd do unless actually in that situation? I can hope that I would give up my life to save somebody else, but I am a selfish person and it's 50/50 either way.

nailak · 09/09/2011 20:23

i was using my experiences of arranged marriages to compare the culture, and the theory of internalizin patriarchal oppression which i dont fully understand, and was trying to understand how that theory fits other examples.

edd1337 · 09/09/2011 20:24

I'd like to know what dittany and her MN cronies would do in that situation. Wear a T-shirt saying "this is what a feminist looks like?"

I think not

Wamster · 09/09/2011 20:24

No it doesn't help and if my way of thought does not involve the simplistic, 'men are bastards (but of course not all) women are damsels in distress' then I'm happy with it.
