Background: 8 weeks post parting. PPH losing 1.4 litres of blood after delivery. Theatre sorted it. Bleeding non stop until I had Implanon at 4 weeks PP and a week later started Cerelle to curb the bleeding. Bleeding stopped for a week. Came back last night.

Just passed this >> see photo

What the actual fuck is it? It's like raw meat, not bloody and just laying there on the pad. It's about an inch long and 2cm or so thick. Waiting on out of hours GP to call me back but any ideas? I'm 30, third child and I've never experienced anything like this.

Sorry for the late update!

Still no scan date and histology haven't come back on what I passed. Told to call back this Friday.

Mynameisnotthis · 23/10/2018 16:41

Jeez OP talk about taking their time. Are you keeping ok meantime?

Jen150 · 26/10/2018 23:40

Hi. 4 days ago I had bladder repair and vaginal hysterectomy due to both having prolapse. The op got a bit complicated due to womb being very big and dr said it was very challenging operation and sent womb off for investigation. Any ideas what that means? At home now on iron tablets as had drain in due to lissue of blood and antibiotics due to bladder infection. Doing ok just so tired and whole belly feels so swollen and big

RainbowsArePretty · 02/11/2018 08:32

How are you now OP?

wineandwhine · 02/11/2018 11:50

Had my scan (finally) on Wednesday that showed retained products. Booked in for a D&C under general anaesthetic next Wednesday. Kind of shitting myself.

Take care.

Mynameisnotthis · 02/11/2018 13:34

Omg OP. I’m saddened that that’s the outcome and that you’ve had to wait so fucking long to find that out.
I’m so sorry to hear that. Having been through a similar but different experience I do hope that you feel much better after the op, I didn’t even know how bad I had been feeling until I had the d&c to resolve.
I’ll be thinking of you on Wednesday. Do post more if you want or need a handhold.

Histology has STILL not come back from when I went into hospital to give them the piece! I can't see it being anything but placenta really but I have no signs of infection at all so either I've been very very lucky or what's inside me isn't breaking down as it should.

Have to head in Wednesday and see if there are beds at 7am. If there are, I stay in hospital nil by mouth until they can fit me in. I know I'm low priority but DH has to take a day off work to look after the baby while I'm in for the day and it's really worrying me that it might not happen and I'll have to wait longer.

Does anyone know why I need to go in Tuesday for initial bloods and initial medication? What does the medication do?

OP posts:
Twiglet2353 · 04/11/2018 06:33

@wineandwhine I'm sorry you're going through this, it's really shit 😞.

Tuesday will consist of doing a Group and Save (and usually a full blood count too) just in case they need to give you a blood transfusion during the surgery.

The medications will consist of an anti-emetic and an antacid to work alongside you being nil by mouth to try and reduce aspiration of stomach contents whilst under GA.

I have to point out these things are v v rare but they have to be prepared just in case xx

HavelockVetinari · 04/11/2018 07:59

Please feed back to your midwife what's happened here - maybe the next person won't be fobbed off and told it's 'just a period' or that it can't possibly be retained product. It'll be a good learning opportunity for them to see that retained product doesn't always produce immediate symptoms.

FermatsTheorem · 04/11/2018 08:08

Good luck Wine (sounds like you've had pretty crap treatment over this - hope they do see you on Wednesday).

wineandwhine · 04/11/2018 18:59

Thank you @Twiglet2353. I'm happy for them to do whatever they need to but I'm never a fan of additional trips to the hospital. I'm one of those horrible patients who do everything I can to get out of there the minute they'll let me. No doubt after the general I'll be wolfing down a sandwich and trying everything to pee so they'll let me home.

I'm unsure if it's worth going through the complaints procedure for this. Any insight? I know these things are a risk effect of pregnancy but the fact histology still hasn't come back, the scan wasn't for two weeks after the piece I came in with along with two midwives and a team of theatre staff making sure it was all out plus nobody calling me back as they said they would when my bloods and swabs showed very slightly elevated infection levels to discuss the possibility of preventative antibiotics make me think this wasn't taken as seriously as it should have been.

Guess this explains why breastfeeding went to pot six weeks post partum as my milk didn't come in fully (never had any problems with the other two), the bleeding and why I've been feeling under the weather.

The bleeding is back today. Very light like spotting but more than I've had in over a week now.

wineandwhine · 04/11/2018 19:00

@HavelockVetinari my community midwife or the midwives at the hospital? I had excellent continuity of care with my community midwife right up until four weeks pp.

OP posts:
Mynameisnotthis · 04/11/2018 22:50

Hi OP. I think it’s def with raising the issues to the hospital. When I had my experience the consultant actually called me and asked me to come in and discuss the full case from birth to d&c and everything in between. I think the wait you’ve had with risk of infection and further PPH is shocking

wineandwhine · 07/11/2018 17:45

Okay, an update and looking for advice.

After the hospital appointment yesterday, the doctor and I decided to try medical management at home with a scan booked in a week today in case it didn't work to get it all out. According to the scan there's one piece left in there 2cm x 3cm x 2cm so around the same size as the last one.

I took four Misoprostal pills vaginally last night at 10pm. I've been feeling a bit crampy but there's no blood at all. A tiny amount of pink mucus spotting but other than that, nothing.

If I don't start bleeding by 10am tomorrow morning (36 hours after the pills), should I call back? DH had to take the day off to look after me for this on doctors orders and nothing has happened at all. It feels like a total waste 😭

I’m Sorry I can’t help OP but just bumping for you in hope that someone more useful comes along. Hope you get it all sorted soon.

PotteryGirl · 07/11/2018 23:59

I passed a really huge gross clot 2 weeks after my second child. I'd overdone things, thinking I was superwoman and 'had this' second child malarkey...I felt feverish and tired, I kept it and showed my health visitor..she was not happy. Rest, Rest and more rest...Feel better x

Melamin · 08/11/2018 10:30

You poor thing! I read this at the beginning and expected it to all be done and dusted by now. They seem to keep finding another way to delay things.

This is the sort of thing post natal care is there for. I would write it all down and take it to PALS as there are lots of different people involved (hospital/gp/midwives etc) and lots of cracks to fall down. They need to work it out and stop it happening to other women.

I had a D&C in the old days when there were more beds, so they just took you in overnight and you got added to the end of a theatre list. They did them all the time then. However, there were problems and risks with them and they now have the medical management way which avoids this, but probably results in more risks going the D&C route as they are not used to doing them all the time. Which is probably why they prefer the medical management way - but that just introduces more delays for you. Sad

Hope things go well today. If you are not sure about the bleeding or anything, then yes, do ring them up. Every time. Flowers

wineandwhine · 08/11/2018 11:39

I was told the bleeding can take anywhere up to two weeks to start and stop and to walk around to encourage movement. I've stopped cramping now so I just don't think this is going to work. Ive had one tiny streak of bright red blood in three days, nowhere near enough to bring out the lodged piece.

And so we wait. Next Wednesday they'll be able to confirm whether it's still there.

I'm definitely taking this to PALS. I'm lucky in that I don't have an infection right now but it'll be week twelve since delivery as of the scan next week.

Melamin · 08/11/2018 21:22

keeping my fingers crossed for you.

SouthernComforts · 08/11/2018 21:27

I can't believe this is still happening to you you poor thing Flowers

SinkGirl · 08/11/2018 21:32

I work as a maternity patient representative and I would definitely be feeding this back if it happened to someone where I live (if you’re in Dorset, drop me a meaaage and I’ll point you in the right direction). I would call back in the morning - they need to sort it out, infection can come out of nowhere very quickly.

RainbowsArePretty · 08/11/2018 21:50

OP I'm so saddened you are still going through this Thanks

Nicky127 · 10/11/2018 20:08

I had retained placenta after my 4 th child and It was left for 13weeks when I was due to get sterilised to be removed, so day of sterilisation I also had a D&C

abbsisspartacus · 10/11/2018 20:15

I had a retained piece of umbilical cord left after I had my son stupidly never went to the Drs about it fortunately I didn't have an infection
