Well... I'd love to meet you all!

Anyone who thinks they might be interested in coming to meet and talk books, post here.

There are going to be lots of dates, ideas and places and i wonder if anyone would be willing to organise with me?? It would mean private messaging and perhaps moving to WhatsApp or email at some point. Maybe 3 of us?

Popping myself back on to keep an
eye on the London date/plan

bibliomania · 19/03/2024 06:25

What gorgeous Manchester locations, Fortuna. I'm stealing those ideas for my next trip anyway.

I didn't know the place well enough to make my own recommendations. I'm normally passing through.

MorriganManor · 19/03/2024 06:33

Seriously considering the Manchester day, antisocial little bookworm that I am Grin Will see what I have on that day, so don’t put me on official list.

bibliomania · 19/03/2024 07:53

We're all antisocial little bookworms, Morrigan.. Consider it parallel play rather than playing together.

DesdamonasHandkerchief · 19/03/2024 09:25

Thank you @PermanentTemporary @StColumbofNavron @MamaNewtNewt for your hard work on organising this.

What wonderful Manchester locations Fortuna like bibliomania I'm making a note to visit them all, but hope I can make the meet up.

elkiedee · 19/03/2024 10:15

I will try to come to the London meetup as I live here. I'd quite like to come up to Manchester as I was a student there, and will see if there's a possibility of staying with my sister, but she may be away as it's school holidays. DS1 also has an exam result presumably due on Thursday 15 August - he has his Maths A level exams this year and then Further Maths and his other subjects next year. I'm a bit anxious - I think he's capable of doing very well but I'm not convinced that he's really taking it seriously enough given that he's interested in studying at very top end universities.

cassandre · 20/03/2024 12:27

Thank you to the organisers! 🙏Alas, I can't make the London one, because I'm going to a festival that weekend (and camping), but I do hope to make the Manchester one.

MonkeyTennis34 · 20/03/2024 15:26

Hello all.
Are the meet ups open to anyone?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/03/2024 17:05

MonkeyTennis34 · 20/03/2024 15:26

Hello all.
Are the meet ups open to anyone?

The meetup is primarily for those who actively participate on the 50 Book Challenge threads. That said, we don't exclude but I would say the meet-ups will be literature related as opposed to general parenting and might not be what you are looking for

Hope everyone is OK with my butting in with a definition !

MonkeyTennis34 · 20/03/2024 22:20

No worries EineReiseDurchDieZeit.

I think I started on the 50 book thread but quickly realised that 25 was more appropriate!

RomanMum · 24/03/2024 12:28

Thanks for the reminder on the 50books thread @StColumbofNavron. I'd be up for London in May.

Welshwabbit · 27/03/2024 10:59

Thanks for organising and for the reminder on the thread @StColumbofNavron - I would love to come to the London meet, work and kids permitting. Depending on how many of us there are, might the British Library cafe be an option? Near King's Cross, which someone mentioned previously.

SheilaFentiman · 10/04/2024 19:46

Re-marking place as I’m actually staying in London the night before so more likely to make it

TattiePants · 10/04/2024 22:58

I’ve managed to fall off the thread but I’m provisional for Manchester. We haven’t made any summer holiday plans yet so I can’t commit just yet.

StColumbofNavron · 11/04/2024 14:59

Well well well …. Look what is happening on 18 May at the British Library. http://europeanwriters.co.uk/

I am not suggesting we buy tickets and ignore each other, but just sharing in case anyone is thinking of making a bigger thing of London.

European Writers | European authors talk and meet audiences in the UK

Last year’s stunning line-up of writers included International Booker Prize winner Bulgarian Georgi Gospodinov and thePresident of Romanian PEN Magda Carneçi and proved beyond doubt the pulling power…

The other thing is, how do we want to manage comms.
We can simply post plans here - but of course will be public for anyone who comes across the page (in my tin hat mode thinking more Dave the Trucker than average non Books).

Alternatives probably all require sharing details in some way e.g: for a WhatsApp group/FB group. I think there are apps that don’t require names/numbers (largely from here when people have said they’ve discovered affairs, so maybe we don’t want to do that).

The loose plan is

  • meet at BL
  • possibly head to see the infamous tomb of Mary Wollestonecraft
  • head into Bloomsbury for second hand book shops, blue plaques etc
  • probably base at a Bloomsbury pub/one of the squares

We are aware some have accessibility issues, so plan would be to base ourselves somewhere and then people can just hang out or go for a mooch/come back etc. Really very relaxed. I live nearby and studied around Bloomsbury for the last decade so I’m certainly happy to have a chat and save us some spots.

Tarahumara · 11/04/2024 15:41

Hello, I don't think I'll be able to come on the 18th (DS1 school 'graduation') but just hanging around on the thread until I know the timings for that.

SheilaFentiman · 11/04/2024 16:09

@StColumbofNavron possibly a 30 day only or OTBT thread?

I have an email address which isn't my name that I used to sign up to MN in the first place so I would also be happy to use that in an email group

Boiledeggandtoast · 11/04/2024 16:38

Although I'm starting my quilting course on 18 May, could I also be included in any links please as I may (hopefully) be able to make it later on if you're lingering into late afternoon.

StColumbofNavron · 11/04/2024 17:00

Of course of course. I might hand around until the Andrei Kurkov talk at the BL.

highlandcoo · 11/04/2024 18:19

Thanks so much @StColumbofNavron and others who're organising this meet-up. I should be able to come to London - and maybe Manchester too - and once we have an idea of timings that day will look at trains down.

I think not making plans too public would be wise, and happy to go along with whatever works best to keep in touch - a WhatsApp group might be easy?

It'll be lovely to be back in Bloomsbury as I volunteered in the area for years and used to visit Persephone Books in Lambs Conduit Street and go to a second-hand bookshop at the back of the shopping centre (I think)

Palegreenstars · 11/04/2024 20:02

Thank you so much for arranging. I was hoping to come to London but we are aiming to complete on buying a house the week before so if that doesn’t get delayed I’ll be out. I’d love to be kept in the loop though as it may still be delayed

StColumbofNavron · 12/04/2024 10:44

@highlandcoo SKOOBS!

highlandcoo · 12/04/2024 11:42

Yes of course!! Thanks for the reminder. Behind the Brunswick Centre..
and I’ve just googled and see there’s a branch in Bath too, where I’m going next weekend for the Persephone festival, so all good 😊

PepeLePew · 12/04/2024 11:47

I'm in for London! I may have to arrive late or leave early pending some other commitments but it's super easy for me to get there and I'd love to make some internet friends.
