Following on from his Sunday Times bestseller Marcus at Home, Marcus Wareing is back - with a must-have new classic for your kitchen shelves.

Over the years, Marcus has developed and refined recipe after recipe. Whether it’s a quick meal after a hectic day, a recipe to bring your family together or a feast to impress your friends, Marcus brings excellence to every dish that he makes.

In New Classics, Marcus takes the best of time-honoured recipes and puts his own spin on them. What’s more, he creates new recipes that will become much-loved classics in their own right. Here is a book to pore over, to bring inspiration and excitement back into your cooking, and to use again and again.

Marcus’ new book features his own take on classic dishes, as well as dishes he thinks deserve to be classics of the future. Yesterday I made my late granny's recipe - home made lentil soup. Diced veg, gently fried then add smoked ham ribs and lentils and cook for hours. Heaven in a bowl!

For me, the ultimate classic recipe for comfort and easiness is beef stew and dumplings

gemsi · 11/11/2017 21:26

I love a good chilli con carne, the perfect classic winter food to tuck into on a cold winters evening. I also love a cottage pie and toad in the hole, all the comfort food!. Mmmm!

AWholeLottaRosie · 11/11/2017 21:51

Beef stew and dumplings

Butteredparsn1ps · 11/11/2017 22:09

Marcus’ lemon tart from,I think, the first series of great british menu would be high on my list of classic puddings along with apple pie and sticky toffee pudding

For mains I’d go with
Simon Hopkinsons coq au vin recipe
Roast beef
Guiness stew
Fish & chips
Sausage and mash

A little less high brow but Heinz tomato soup and cheese sandwiches is a classic winter lunch!

And cheese on toast is the food of the gods.

This is making me hungry Grin

My classic recipe is Scouse- a delicious beef stew, I make mine nice and thick with potatoes, carrots and onion, and serve with buttered tiger bread. Perfect for the colder months.

mitalmanda · 11/11/2017 22:46

Can't beat a classic Beef Bourguignonne to warm you up this time of year, cooking in the slow cooker all day making things easy and freezing a batch for another day. I like mine with either pasta & garlic bread, or roast potatoes with roasted veg...yum.

mumofmadboys · 11/11/2017 23:12

Coq au vin for me! Yummy! With roast potatoes , roast parsnips and green beans

Jayjayharrychops · 11/11/2017 23:16

I think my most classic recipe I make is spaghetti bolognaise. My three children will all eat, as I usually have to cook three different meals! The cookbook will give me some new ideas to try out & broaden the kids horizons and give them the opportunity to try new things

I love beef stew and dumpling or roast beef and yorkshire puddings. Our family enjoy the classic prawn cocktail for a starter or tomato soup. Apple crumble or rice pudding for afters. All should be homemade and seasonal produce is the best. All learnt from my mum.
I guess new classics are like a lamb curry or even a spaghetti Bolognese, not the same as in their country of origin but now a regular part of our diet and thoroughly enjoyed.

An all time family favourite has to be Mince and Carrots. Think it was called Peasant style mince served with rice. I got the recipe from a pack of long grain rice from Tesco's when I was first married. Forty years ago!!
1lb minced beef,
1 onion sliced
clove of garlic crushed
3 tbs tomato puree
tin of chopped tomatoes
Half pint of beef stock
Seasoning, mixed dried herbs and 3 bay leaves
Fry onion and garlic until transparent, not browned. Add mince and brown. Stir in rest of the ingredients and cook gently for 30 minutes at least. Add a glug of red wine which is optional and serve with rice. I use Basmati these days! This serves 4. Delicious!

Bread and butter pudding delicious!

milliemoon · 12/11/2017 19:51

My mum's chick pea curry!

KarenCBC · 12/11/2017 20:58

Lasagne is a classic for me. Who doesn't like lasagne?!? If you cook it for friends who don't cook regularly it also looks like you've put in loads of effort when you haven't really! Ha ha!!

nerysw · 13/11/2017 09:52

Macaroni cheese, perfect comfort food.
