I really AM going to Low Carb this time...

And DH has promised to join me. But not until after our big night away without the kids next week. So lots of time to procrastinate plan ahead I've ordered India's book. And have an old copy of Atkins' upstairs.

I will need a sugar substitute I think. And, ahem, fibre. Are linseeds low carb? Can you eat them in induction? And I will need to plan my snackage.

And how to get through the first week or two weeks? What helped you not cave in at the first cravings or headaches? And did I read somewhere you can test your piss? Or is that not strictly necessary?

sal you are doing so well

agreee about so many temptations for nurses
the constant open box of chocs on the desk-bloody agony
I have managed to resist so far , but if on nights tis nigh on impossible

Tortington · 20/03/2010 18:10

i dont do breakfasts.

but the zero carb syrup - all different flavours ( like you get in a coffee shop) are great if you are a cofee lover.

i like the zero carb lollipops for when i am watching a film ( and dh buys chocolate bar ) or when i;m driving.

the bread is great.

i like prototoast - its like melba toast and nice with philly on

i like crostini - like mini melbatoast - nice for nibbles - with philly

the breadsticks are nice

they also do these zero carb marshmellow things covered in chocolate - they are nice there are only about 6 in a packet and you can't eat the whole packet becuase of the sugar substitute and it might give you the shits.

dh likes the boiled sweets

if your a very lucky person you might be able to get hold of the zero carb peanut butter ( i havent managed that yet)

they do zero carb preserve too

brimfull · 20/03/2010 19:23

thanks
will try out the lollipops for a sweet kick

am afraid if I buy the toasty things I'll be tempted to eat all at once , same with yummy marshmallows hmm will maybe risk those

Right I am going low carb as of today .

I am off shopping in a bit , is there anything in particular I should be looking out for ?
Or more importantly things that are not obviously high carb that I might get ?

I think I know the basics but I will go and have a nose through the thread and try and pick up some much needed tips .

FrazzledBlob · 22/03/2010 18:01

Hi Travellingwilbury

Are you following a specific plan? I am doing the low carb veggie plan so can't advise on meats!

I found some good info on low carbing on minimins, moneysavingexpert and 3fatchicks. There is a guide to starting atkins on the first site.

The first two weeks tend to be quite strict and there are certain foods you should avoid. Can sort you some links if you need them later.

I am trying to avoid weighing each day especially since TOTM arrived and I ballooned up and gained a couple of pounds. I read over the weekend that seeing no great loss after the initial couple of weeks could be due to water retention so I am making a real effort to drink lots. Its 3 weeks until my holiday and I want to be 4lbs lighter so i am into the next stone iyswim.

Sal - you are doing great even with the temptations on night shift. Has it taken you long to get near the 2 stone mark?

Hope everyone else is having a good start to the week

travellingwilbury · 22/03/2010 18:25

Hi frazzled I am following Atkins , I think I am going to be ok with the main meals in the first couple of weeks but the no fruit thing is hard and something to snack on .

I am however very happy that I have found some huge sausages with only a carb content of 2g each . Little things that please eh ?

How have you found the whole low carb thing ?

FrazzledBlob · 22/03/2010 18:39

low carbing is the best thing i ever did

I was inspired by this thread and over the moon to find a veggie version.

I was a classic carb addict. Have done slimming world on and off for years and would binge on 'free food'.

For the first time in years I feel ok around food. This plan has killed all my cravings and urges to binge. I am also exercising instead of eating when the kids are in bed as I no longer feel hungry.

The first couple of days can be hard. Just keep drinking water. I carry a bottle everywhere with me as it is easy to lapse back into the old habbit of not drinking for hours on end.

Snack wise you could have chunks of cheese and hard boiled eggs? I think after the first couple of weeks you can then have nuts.

Let us know how you get on.

travellingwilbury · 22/03/2010 18:48

Thanks , I will be back for sure and let you all know

I am determined to get a move on with my excercise as well . If I can get rid of my carb addiction I will be so pleased . The amount of bread I can get through in a day is not good .

mrswill · 22/03/2010 21:46

Frazzledbob, what veggie version of low carb is this?? am not vegetarian now, but was for 9 years, and much prefer vegetarian food. Please tell all....

Buda · 23/03/2010 07:07

A very shamefaced Buda is back. Managed to low carb for a whole morning last week. Sigh. I cannot seem to stick to any bloody diet.

Am starting again today. Am actually signed up to the Tesco diets site and have changed my plan to low carb. Will actually print off my plan and shop accordingly and do it this time. I am so so sick of being fat. In fact scratch that. I am obese. Am 16 and a half stone and a size 24.

Am off to take DS to school and then coming back to do my plan and shopping list.

travellingwilbury · 23/03/2010 08:22

Well I am back already , I managed a whole day yesterday and I am feeling pretty motivated (lets hope this lasts)

I have got a goal to be down by the end of July . I am visiting my mum in France and I don't want to be lardy by then . I need to lose between a pound and a half and two pounds a week . That is doable isn't it ?

Mitchell81 · 23/03/2010 09:50

Yes 2 lbs a week is achievable, that is what I am doing at the moment. Started in January and lost more in the first two weeks but have steadily lost 1 kg/2.2 lbs per week.

I am hoping to lose 1 lbs by saturday and then I will have lost 2 stone. And then another 4 lbs, I will be half way to my goal weight. Which is still in the very distant future.

Everyone sounds like that are doing well

gibbberish · 23/03/2010 10:06

Oooh this thread is getting very busy now!

Mitchell your weight loss is great. Gives me hope! 2lb a week would be enough for me.

Buda - maybe you need the extra encouragement you should get from Tesco diets. Do you have plenty of low carb snacks to hand for when you want to 'pick' without going off the diet?

Had a lovely weekend away with dh. We were taken out for meals so my diet kind of went out the window...

BUT weighed this morning and am down 2lbs on last week so very pleased! Back to it with a vengeance now. Need to go do a big low carb shop...

Mitchell81 · 23/03/2010 10:15

Gibberish, well done.

Yes agree you need to have lots of cheese, chicken pieces, sausages, crustless quiche, boiled eggs in the fridge to snack on (all no carb or very low carb snacks) It helps if you are not hungry because you then could eat high carb snacks.

I keep my carbs for salad with lunch and veg with dinner.

Jacaqueen · 23/03/2010 10:18

I've not updated for a while.

Last week I had a few days off plan as I was so pissed off about sticking to it and the the weight not coming off. Thankfully I dont seem to have done much damage.

My clothes are definately less tight. I have gone down 2 notches on my belt and my coat buttons really easily. But I have only lost about 10lbs in 5 weeks and most of that was in the first few days.

If I wasn't so overweight I wouldn't be too bothered as I feel fantastic, energetic and calm. I'm just slightly perplexed as to why I am not losing more considering I have so much to lose.

However I am not giving up. I really believe in this way of eating. Last week during those few days that I binged on carbs I felt terrible, both physically and mentally. I felt sad and out of control. I have let food control me for too long but with lowcarb I feel that I am in control.

Anyway I said I was going to be more vigilant with my carbs and start cutting down on nuts and dairy. Now that I'm back into the swing of things I will start doing that.
If that doesn't make a difference I am going to do the Atkins Fat Fast. If I dont lose doing that I must be a medical anomoly and will go to the doctor!

Low carbing is great i am evangelical about it but with the exception of protein shake as a quick occasional breakfast i don't touch any of the processed stuff on low carb megastore, personally it's better that i give up the whole carb thing and i've come to see bread etc. as fillers with no nutritional value.

I cannot find any low carb diet that actually recommends these foods in phase one at all.
Be a bit cautious about them especially in the early days.

FrazzledBlob · 23/03/2010 16:05

mrswill Book here of the veggie plan I am attempting to follow!

I have also picked up lots of recipes online that are veggie.

TOTM still won't go away but I have lost what I gained last week so I am still at a 12lb loss. I wake up most mornings and 'feel' slimmer but its not showing on the scales so I am only weighing every now and again as I do feel so much better in myself.

I am going to up the exercise from now on and see if that has any effect.

Well done to all the 'losers'

motherofluvlies · 24/03/2010 13:49

Hi a bit late adding to the list as only lost 1lb so a bit disheartened.I am due TOTM so the carb loss is a bit of a challenge for pmt.I did sneak a pudding in on Sunday but back on the straight and narrow as soon as.
Is anyone getting tired now the energy burst is passed?I am week 3and pretty strict.Even walking up hills knackers my legs or is it just me.?
I am sticking with this as I have decided!!
I am also on the ward! When asked once by matron what we found the most stressful situations?i jokingly said having open boxes of chocolates on the nurses station when dieting. She didnt laugh!!
Onwards and upwards.

motherofluvlies · 24/03/2010 13:51

I mean downwards

nikki1978 · 24/03/2010 16:01

Hi all,

I am just starting a low carb diet and was just wondering what I can eat if I don't like salad? Today I had eggs and bacon for breakfast then brocolli and stilton soup for lunch with a bit of cheddar cheese. Dinner will be chicken and lots of veg. Is this ok? I would like to have different things for lunch but not sure what to have if not salad. Any ideas?

Thanks
