Will going from around 10st to 9st make a big difference?

Hi,

I’ve been on a weight loss journey. I’m 5ft 5, I started at 12st 9 and I am now 10st 3 so I’ve lost nearly 2 & a half stone. I was a 16 jeans size and now a 12.

I originally thought that if I got down to 9st I would love my body and look and feel slim but with just over one stone to go, I still have lots of fat to lose from my legs, stomach and arms (bingo wings) and I’m struggling to see that one stone will get rid of all of that!

Do you think it would? Will I see a dramatic difference in my body from 10st 3lbs to 9st? Or should I be aiming for closer to 8st?

I know about skinny fat and have just started at the gym this week to try and build some muscle to ‘tone up’ aswell as lose weight. Been doing strength training and a bit of cardio.

Is anyone 5ft 5 and around 9st? If so, what clothes size are you if you don’t mind me asking? I really wanted to order a load of new clothes for when I’m happy in my body but don’t know whether to go for size 10 or 8.

Thanks for any replies
xxx

I am 5 foot 4 and found going from 10 stone 3 to 9 stone life changing - I feel so so much better. Between 8 and 10 is fine for your height so it depends on your frame - do you have small wrists and ankles?

Theuniversalshere1 · 02/08/2025 08:15

I'm same height as you and 10.5 stone I feel awful ATM... 9 stone wS my ideal when I felt fittest and happiest.

MagnificentBastard · 02/08/2025 08:18

I think at your height you’d probably look and feel better at around 9 stone.

Notmyreality · 02/08/2025 08:18

You’ll feel about 10% lighter

willwetalkinthemornin · 02/08/2025 08:19

I lost a stone last year from cutting out all sweet stuff (so no more biscuits, chocolate, cake etc) and lost a stone in a month - I was 10.5 stone and now I’m 9.5, I’m taller than you (5’9) so wasn’t big to start with but the difference is amazing. I’m not sure if it’s the actual weight loss or just cutting out crappy sugary foods but I have so much more energy and just feel loads better and all my clothes fit really well (& had to size down on my jeans) Seeing as I was quite slim to start with I was surprised how much better I feel - and now I never want sweet things. Currently in Italy and don’t even want any gelato!

Thank you! That’s exactly what I was hoping to hear!

Weirdly I have small wrists but I have ‘ cankles’ which I’m hoping will disappear when I lose more weight! Fingers crossed! Xxx

It really does depend on the composition of your body. As you’ve said, there is a difference when there is muscle involved.

i am 5ft 2 but have always been heavier than I look, because I’ve always had a fair amount of muscle due to martial arts and other sports. At my lightest I was size 8 on top and size 10 on my lower half but 9st 5, and currently still the same clothing size at 10st 2 with a little more muscle.

i think you’ve done amazing with your weight loss, but if you’re now focusing in on toning up it might be the time to look more at that side of things along with a tape measure rather than scales. It might otherwise be disheartening for you if you gain weight because of muscle even though in reality you would still be slimming down. Hope that makes sense?! But basically at the point your increasing weight training just take the number on the scales with a pinch of salt and perhaps pay more attention to measuring yourself with a tape measure ☺️

congrats of what you’ve done so far!

It’s crazy because I’ve seen other people at 10st 7 and they look slim and great and I’m lighter but look so much bigger. Thank you, I’ll stick to my 9st goal and hope I do also notice a big change xxx

It depends. Sometimes if you’re at the lower end of a healthy weight, your boobs disappear and your face can look drawn. Maybe 10lb is the magic number? See how you go!

BeNeatJoker · 02/08/2025 08:24

I started at 12 stone 6 and I am down to 9 stone 6
I am 5 ft 6 . I have still got fat on my inside thighs and the top of my arms have some fat. I have been using weights for years now so I’m surprised I don’t look more toned than I do. So I guess I will have to shed more weight , I will try to get to 9 stone to see how I feel then.
it’s annoying though because all I get is comments about looking ill and that I’ve lost too much now when in reality I’m bang in the middle of my healthy bmi and I think I look brilliant!

livingthatlifevondutch · 02/08/2025 08:26

Congratulations on your weight loss!

I think there is a big difference between being a flabby 9 stone and a toned 9 stone. Are you doing much exercise? If you can build in some HIIT cardio and strength training you will see a real change in shape over time. Aim to build muscle, which is leaner than fat and which burns more calories even when you are resting.

Hi, thanks for replying. Yes I totally get what you are saying. I do, do tape measure measurements of different parts of my body and take photos so I can compare that way. I did that since I first started weight loss. And I was thinking the same thing, if I’m building muscle, the scales may stop going down as much but my body could be getting smaller xxx

I bet it’s such a sense of achievement to have the before photos to see how well you’ve done! Going from a 16 to a 12 must take such focus and hard work! Do update us on how your journey continues! X

I'm 5'3 and just under 10st - I find 3lb either way makes a huge difference, so a full stone will definitely have an effect.

Unfortunately your body will retain fat where it wants to & there's nothing we can do about it.

My body will let my ribs protrude & boobs disappear before I lose an ounce off my thighs. It's v frustrating but that's how my family are built.

somewhereintheworld · 02/08/2025 08:30

I was about 10st 5lbs and have gone down to 9st. The difference is phenomenal and for the first time in years I feel really slim and pleased with my body. I had to buy a whole new wardrobe because nothing fitted me any more as well which was great! So I say yes getting to 9st will make a huge difference to you.

HeidiNotSoHeavy · 02/08/2025 08:36

I went down 2 clothes sizes going from 10 and half to 9 stone. The slimmer you are, the more of a difference any pound lost makes.
When i was bigger, I was always rolling my eyes when slim people said they want to lose just a few pounds - because a few pounds on me would make no difference. I can see now that on a slimmer person, it really does.

Gripejuice01 · 02/08/2025 08:49

There’s a great difference. I carry fat on my stomach and back. Legs are always slim, no matter how much I put on. At ten stone I definitely look heavy and can feel the fat around my middle and on my face too. At nine I’m at by best and a comfortable size 10 in fitted clothes.

Marinel · 02/08/2025 08:50

I think you will find that stone you still have to lose will make a big difference.

I lost a few stone a while ago and once I got into a healthy BMI I drifted down to see where I felt best (and also where I was not 'in between sizes' in the brands I wore). I ended up at 9st because that felt right. There is no need to decide now, see how you feel when you get there. And well done so far!

Temporaryname158 · 02/08/2025 08:54

Can I ask OP how you have lost this weight?

HeidiNotSoHeavy · 02/08/2025 08:55

Oh and do lift weights. I'm very muscular and therefore compact - I'm 5'6 and 9 stone and I wear size 6/8

PissedOffNeighbour22 · 02/08/2025 08:58

I’m currently 9st 7 and cannot seem to lose the last half a stone. I’ve lost more than OP so the stubborn fat will probably be more noticeable. Since 10st all I’ve found is that any weight only comes off my boobs (where I don’t want it to) and nothing further will come off my stomach, thighs or bingo wings. These bits all just look awful and my face looks really old and drawn.
im an 8-10 (at 5ft 3) now but am definitely skinny-fat.

TennisLady · 02/08/2025 09:01

I’m 5ft 5 and I’m usually around 10 - 10st 2, I work out a lot including weight lifting and I’m 8 on top and 10 on bottom so probably depends on your body composition.

Happyfeet234 · 02/08/2025 09:02

100% yes. I’m 5’4 and have gone from 10st10 to 9st5 and I know 9st will be perfect so am heading that way. I think under 9 will start me on the gaunt look. I got to 9st5 and felt great, then up to 9st10 and felt massive so I think it really does make a difference. I’m think for me, aiming for 9st gives me that 5lb fluctuation range for my cycle, holidays, socials etc to stay within and in my best clothes. Size 10 is the best feeling and looking size for me. I’ve been a 14 and it wasn’t good on my frame. Tiny wrists and ankles here.

ChipsAreLife · 02/08/2025 09:03

i could have written this myself! I’ve got from 12 stone to 10 stone and am 5”5. I went shopping for new jeans yesterday and was feeling quite deflated by how I felt. Yes I’ve gone down a size or two but expected to be feeling much slimmer! I am going to aim for 9 stone now and see how I feel then.
I do reformer Pilates 3 times a week walk 10k steps a day and swim but may start to add more
weight workouts in to help too. I carry a lot of weight on my bum and thighs and don’t think I’ll ever have slim legs!

lalaloopyhead · 02/08/2025 09:05

I'm 5ft 3 and have recently gone from 10st 3 to 9st 2 and it makes a lot of difference. I comfortably fit in my old clothes now and my size 12 jeans are way too big.
I used to weigh 8st 3 but that was like 20 years ago and now I just can't see that looking good on me and I will be happy to maintain at 9 if I manage to shift these last few pounds.
