What we ate today in a calorie deficit - whole food edition (and how do we feel?)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/04/2025 19:42

I am on a long running ‘what we ate today’ thread, but I am currently trying to cut out ultra processed foods and Eat a (mostly) whole food diet. Mainly because I am really suffering with a looooooong list of minor ailments that are not independently any issue but as a collective, they are really dragging me down. My plan is to do the next 30 days (barring a weekend away) and to see if I notice any improvements, while also sticking to my calorie and exercise goals.

@CortieTatits a half marathon, I am grotesquely unprepared for it though. I have done many before so I am relying purely on muscle memory and glucose gels to get me through. It’s going to be 22* here as well so if the running doesn’t kill me, the heat might 🥵

Fingers crossed! 22 here as well and we are already declaring its a heat wave 😅.

I’ve never run half marathon, my longest ever run was 16 km. I was increasing gradually having a goal to run to the next village and back (32 km in total) but I got pregnant so had to put my running on hold. I hope I will get back to it once the little one stops looking for the boob every hour!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2025 23:17

@CortieTat 32k is a very long way. The most I ever ran was 26kms, during lockdown here I did a lot of running and I did a whole food diet called Whole30, I was never so healthy as I was then. I was ripped and lean as well, and I didn’t eat a single grain of sugar for nearly a year.

Giving up sugar is impressive! I know I can’t restrict things, I would end up chasing every cake like it’s going out of fashion. I tried to quit smoking probably more than 50 times and the only thing that worked was tricking myself into smoking only on special occasions. I have not had such a special occasion for years 😝

I also overhauled my diet during the pandemic , when we started TTC - I was already 43 so I had to maximize my chances. Took a long time but it worked.

willsandnoodle · 14/06/2025 08:13

@thenewaveragebear1983giving up sugar is so strange isn’t it.. when you don’t have it you don’t want it, and it’s so easy to resist. But the one bite you have and it’s all downhill.
I regularly quit sugar, I last a few months and feel amazing then I let myself have a piece of cake here, an ice cream there and then I’m done for. The only way I can eat healthily is all or nothing.

Misunderstoodagain · 14/06/2025 08:33

My mum has recently (in the past year) cut out wheat from her diet completely- she has suffered with a bad leg for 20+ years after it being reconstructed after an accident - extreme pain, arthritis and swelling- within 2 weeks of cutting out wheat she was off her morphine patches, arthritis in hands and spine less painful, inflammation gone down dramatically.
Im thinking of doing this but its really Hard to do plus i have zero time to meal prep but i am going to start trying.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 14/06/2025 10:46

I did an elimination plan called the whole 30, it’s very American in its literature and while over there they have lots of branding, over here we have to work it out for ourselves. I would honestly recommend it to anyone who is struggling with any kind of inflammatory issues, fibromyalgia, aches and pains etc. it’s not a weight loss plan, you can eat as much as you want of the right foods and if it’s banned it’s fully banned. Melissa urban has rebranded recently and there’s new guides out that are a bit more softly softly but i actually used to like her zero tolerance no bullshit stance. I’m really tempted to do it again but I can’t quite get into the headspace. The aim is that you cut a huge list of foods out of your diet all at once then you reintroduce them one by one and see what happens.

@thenewaveragebear1983 I have heard of Whole30, I considered doing it a couple of years ago and even downloaded some info (I don’t remember if it was a plan or something else). In the end I decided against it, I find it very difficult to stick to restrictions like that and was worried that I end up putting on weight. I should not eat gluten and still I end up cheating from time to time 🤦‍♀️, so I expect my Whole30 would be very short-lived.

Yesterday:

Paleo granola, fljälfil (type of kefir), banana

Club sandwich made by my DC (9 and 12) White gf bread and not the most healthy option but I am very proud of them.

Skewers, vegetables fried in red miso paste, salad made with lentils, cauliflower, spring onions and sour cucumbers

Snacks: two coffees and a matcha with oat milk, small doughnut, one scoop of ice cream, a peach, 188 ml of cava brut

2310 kcal, very short walk (around 2km), Les Mills Body Attack

@CortieTat it was horrible! I have done probably 20 half marathons and that was the worst, it was hot, it was laps, it was real grueller. 2hrs 4 mins which is my slowest ever time as well. But it’s all character building I guess.

Had a good day yesterday (unlike today, lunch from gatukök - local chippy)

Overnight oats
Tofu, ikea veg balls, stir fried red cabbage with ginger and spring onion, egg white (leftover from steak tartare), beetroot juice with fresh ginger
Jacket potato with homemade skagenröra (shrimps, yogurt, fresh dill), grated cheese, daikon, fried red pepper with fennel

Snacks: vegan magnum, piece of kladdkaka, three coffees with oat milk, slice of gf bread and a small 3.5% ipa 🍺

Congratulations on your half marathon
@thenewaveragebear1983

@CortieTat i am going to look up hypopressives!

i haven’t been doing great on the calorie deficit or whole food objectives tbh! I have just had 2 snickers ice cream bars and a club biscuit 😬 the scale was up 2lbs and my waist measurement makes me think it is definitely fat being gained!

mon
cheese omelette
toastie and latte
venison in red wine and blueberry sauce with asparagus

tue
eggs and sourdough
chicken, roast veg, watercress, bn squash pasta
pork fried with random spices and served in little gem lettuce leaves as tacos with a few Doritos (!) and guacamole and salsa

snacks both days: lots of bakery mixed grain sourdough with butter, coffees, apples and red wine

workouts CG day 14 &15

thenewaveragebear1983 · 18/06/2025 21:03

Bit of a day off today as it’s our anniversary and I also got the all clear from my appointment at the breast clinic, so we’re having a nice meal of steaks and a glass of wine

@CortieTat I just want to come live in your house and eat what you're eating

CortieTat · 19/06/2025 15:30

@Authorperson it’s Midsummer eve tomorrow and our house unfortunately looks like a nuclear disaster site. I’m trying to make it more presentable right now. But we do have beautiful nature. Two days ago I caught three deers (mum and two youngster) eating my azalea.

Yesterday:

Paleo granola, kefir, banana
Chips and burger 🍔 (I estimated 1100 kcal for this one) from our local gatukök (literally street kitchen)
Tried to save the day with homemade pizza with mozarella, homemade sauce, squash, rocket salad, herbs from the garden, onion and olives.

2616 kcal, short hike with the little one, beginner hypopressives.

I slept 4 hours today. Baby got up at 4 am, all smiles. DH stepped in and took her but he’s got hay fever so when they finally fell asleep he went off like a diesel chainsaw. I just sat there listening and feeling sorry for myself, then got up and started cleaning 🧹. It’s Midsummer eve tomorrow but all I want is sleep!

Authorperson · 19/06/2025 17:17

@CortieTat is midsummer eve a big thing where you are? People in UK are barely even aware of it

Yes, in Sweden it’s possibly the most celebrated holiday.

Authorperson · 19/06/2025 18:57

Wow that's so interesting! Off to Google Swedish Midsummer Traditions

CortieTat · 19/06/2025 21:11

We’re going to attend a traditional event tomorrow, we do it every year. It’s in the middle of nowhere/poor countryside part of the country so it’s going to be very traditional. I’m going to take photos.

Today:

Overnight oats
Soup with mung beans noodles, cabbage, spring onions, egg and smoked tofu
Oat wraps with leftovers from yesterday (chicken, beans, rocket salad, yogurt, mozarella, pepper, onion, squash)

Snacks: dates, two coffees, one scoop of ice cream, red wine (limiting to two glasses)

2291 kcal, LM Shapes and a beginner hypopressives flow. 7 km hike with baby. I did the same trail I used to walk daily at the end of pregnancy for the first time.

I’ve had 4238 kcal yesterday and today I feel like crap 😅. I don’t think I realised before how much bad food choices affect how we feel, I have not eaten so much (food and sugar) in a really long time (I assume since last Midsommar)

Overnight oats

Koladröm - this is a traditional traybake with strawberries on top. I have the recipe in my calorie tracker and the whole cake 🎂 is 5448 kcal. Homemade, no sugar added 😅, the sweetness comes from digestives and dulce de leche.

Homemade sushi and miso soup - we had a small celebration this year so decided to roll together instead of serving a more traditional meal.

Snacks: cinnamon bun, three coffees with oat milk, all the ingredients for koladröm grazed on separately, 188 ml of primitivo.

Done my hypopressives in the morning.
Photos of the dancing round Midsommarstång (the decorated pole in the middle) for your viewing pleasure.

Looks lovely - happy midsummer! I am impressed you totted up the calories.

Ok it’s too hot here today for counting calories but I need to get serious for a few weeks at least - from tomorrow! So far I had 2 egg cheese omelette and a v small bowl of yoghurt and berry paleo granola. Lunch was a fake almond magnum and a watermelon Lolly!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/06/2025 14:17

Me too @Clearingaspace- 4 weeks today is my birthday and 7 weeks today I go on holiday! And I’ve still not got my head in the zone. I’m going to sign up to an online pt I think, just to give me a kick start and a bit of real Life accountability. I’ve just got changed to go out and I was thinking, as usual, I have no clothes! But it’s not that I have no clothes. It’s that nothing makes me look slimmer any more, I can’t hide it. I used to have certain outfits I could put on and I’d look really slim, now I look dumpy in everything 😢

What was on your stuffed red pepper?
I used to have stuffed peppers 10+ years ago but had forgotten they existed!
