What we ate today in a calorie deficit - whole food edition (and how do we feel?)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/04/2025 19:42

I am on a long running ‘what we ate today’ thread, but I am currently trying to cut out ultra processed foods and Eat a (mostly) whole food diet. Mainly because I am really suffering with a looooooong list of minor ailments that are not independently any issue but as a collective, they are really dragging me down. My plan is to do the next 30 days (barring a weekend away) and to see if I notice any improvements, while also sticking to my calorie and exercise goals.

Today:

Two slices of crisp bread, liver pate, cheese, sardines, soft boiled egg, homemade kimchi

Omelette with bacon, red pepper, onion, cabbage and a slice of melted cheese on top

Goulash-style soup with celeriac, carrots, potatoes, onion, garlic, mushrooms, leek, red lentils and lovage (kids not impressed)

Snacks: small piece of Dubai chocolate (homemade, I’m getting better at it), two coffees with oat milk, winegums, two dates, and a smoothie (banana, avocado, tofu, cocoa, kefir and maple syrup)

2669 kcal, a run! I’m a bit proud of myself, did 5K for the first time since I was pregnant (I stopped running at 6 weeks because 🤢). My time wasn’t great but I managed to run for the whole 5 km and kept my pace.

Hi 👋 it’s been a few days since I last posted, I’m still not doing great in the no UPF department and have been feeling incredibly tired since my food poisoning this week. Yesterday I took a 2hr nap in the afternoon and still slept all night and woke up feeling tired! We go on holiday tomorrow so I’m really looking forward to a few days away, sea air and hopefully will come back feeling refreshed.

I do need to restart my healthy plan though, it makes so much different to how I feel and my general well being. It’s hard to do while away though so will be making all my plans ready to relaunch when I get home

@thenewaveragebear1983 do you know what it was you ate? I couldn't find where you mentioned the food poisoning... One of my big fears!! Sorry you're feeling so tired still, hope you get your mojo back soon.

CortieTat · 27/05/2025 15:00

@thenewaveragebear1983 Enjoy your holiday!

I have been eating 80% great, 20% crap as usual, just overwhelmed with life and didn’t have time to post.

Sunday:

Crispbread, tofu in vindaloo sauce, homemade kimchi, liver pate, salami and cheese

Homemade pancakes with yoghurt banana and chocolate sprinkles (shaved some chocolate off the block I bought for making Dubai choc)

Homemade burger and assorted veg

Snacks: Dubai chocolate, Boba bubble tea (milk matcha with tapioca pearls), homemade kombucha with extra ginger, two coffees with oat milk

2342 kcal, LM Pilates

Yesterday:

Overnight oats,

Whatever green stuff I could find in the fridge plus two slices of gf bread (disgusting), liver pate, cheese

Monday taco (Taco Tuesday is a thing in Sweden 😀)

Snacks: two coffees, Dubai chocolate, dates, leftover pancake with banana and mat yogurt.

2702 kcal, recovery day.

I’m getting much better at making Dubai chocolate. The decorating step is fun!

@Authorpersoni am convinced it was salad leaves. All I ate that day was a pouch of precooked quinoa and a tin of mackerel and salad. I’ve had it before years ago from bagged lettuce and I’m convinced it was the same. I suppose it could have been norovirus but no one else on the family was struck down so I assume it was FP.

Authorperson · 27/05/2025 19:28

@thenewaveragebear1983 salad! That's scary, didn't realise you could get it from that! Out of date?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 27/05/2025 19:41

@Authorpersonnope, in date but had been opened. It’s one of the biggest causes of food poisoning. I’m pretty sure it was that because I was only sick (not “the other end” tmi) so it must have been whatever was in my stomach and didn’t get into my digestive system. Honestly, for those 3 hours I was genuinely dying 🤣

Can I join please. God a few stone to lose, maybe 3 but no idea as don't have scales. But mainly I'm running out of energy because of the rubbish I eat and that needs to change.
Today was the first time I have ever taken a salad to work for lunch and voluntarily ate broccoli AND enjoyed it!

So..breakfast - cereal
Snacks - breakfast bar, banana
Lunch- cream cheese and cucumber bagel. Salad leaves, sliced radishes, sliced cucumber, beetroot with red wine vinegar
Dinner - chicken, broccoli and gravy
Far too much chocolate
Coffee, diet coke and 1 glass of water

thenewaveragebear1983 · 28/05/2025 06:35

@JG24welcome! I’ve found this thread really motivating to cut out some of the UPF in my diet, it helps to see what others are eating and how they manage it.

OP posts:
JG24 · 28/05/2025 19:49

Just checking in. I had the same salad as yesterday for lunch with a bagel with cream cheese.
Dinner was leftover chicken, carrots, broccoli and gravy again
Tomorrow I've just got some greek yoghurt and chia seeds for breakfast
I'm going to take the same salad for lunch (needs finishing) but swap the bagel for some couscous and veg.
Not sure on dinner, running out of food as it's the end of the week!

CortieTat · 28/05/2025 22:13

@JG24 welcome! This thread is great, it keeps me motivated to eat proper lunch even if I have to eat it standing and bending sideways to avoid spilling hot soup over my little one’s head - she only sleeps in the carrier or a wrap during the day.

Yesterday:

Paleo granola (not homemade), Arla’s “onaka”, banana

Leftovers: tofu stir-fried with veg from Moday’s tacos, savoy cabbage, radishes, a slice of gf bread with liver pate

Homemade pizza with mozzarella, onion, olives, tomatoes, zucchini, and prosciutto crudo

Snacks: two coffees with oat milk, four dates, kanelbulle (cinnamon bun), jazz apple

2235 kcal, LM Shapes. It was raining for the whole day so only went for a short walk.

Sorry not to post - I have fallen into the bread bin! Just trying to put my intention out there to update later. I will aim for 80:20 wholefood:upfness rather than the 20:80 it’s been lately, but from experience it usually takes a few false starts.

your dc’s Dubai chocolate looks amazing @CortieTat

Authorperson · 31/05/2025 12:38

Just made this snack and thought of this thread. Thin sliced carrots with tahini and toasted seeds and nori sprinkle, amazing!

Well done on your weights @CortieTat - that’s great. I was reading in a thread on the exercise section that over head weights are particularly important in strengthening spine as we get older.

i might try something like your snack for my dc3 @Authorperson - I would have to leave off the seeds and not mention what tahini is made of (she loves hummus funnily).

today was vey light on veg!

bf: 2 boiled eggs
lunch: half a crosta mollica margarita pizza
dinner: stir fried vegetables (large portion), chicken, quinoa and kikkoman soy sauce. Didn’t use oil as cooked the chicken separately (and had ran out!) so sort of half steamed it.
snacks: latte, walnuts and dark chocolate

JG24 · 01/06/2025 14:43

I've had scrambled eggs for breakfast,
salmon salad for lunch,
Just had greek yoghurt, raspberries and chia seeds for a snack
Dinner is rice and peanut chicken from hello fresh
The salmon salad was lovely, I'm so surprised at how much I'm enjoying salads after spending 40 years turning my nose up at them!

Clearingaspace · 01/06/2025 20:39

@JG24 i feel like salad is often better than I imagine. I hardly ever choose it but feel good after I eat one!
