What we ate today in a calorie deficit - whole food edition (and how do we feel?)

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/04/2025 19:42

I am on a long running ‘what we ate today’ thread, but I am currently trying to cut out ultra processed foods and Eat a (mostly) whole food diet. Mainly because I am really suffering with a looooooong list of minor ailments that are not independently any issue but as a collective, they are really dragging me down. My plan is to do the next 30 days (barring a weekend away) and to see if I notice any improvements, while also sticking to my calorie and exercise goals.

We had a long day today, electronic handbrake stopped working in our car while DH was in the middle of nowhere and I had to rescue him, so no training for me today and just a salad from fast food chain.

I swear our next car will be a Ford from 1902. Or Volvo ÖV 4. Electronic handbrakes are pure evil.

Clearingaspace · 04/06/2025 08:50

@CortieTat our car is 14 years old and the only car I have driven - I am not looking forward to when we have to get a new fangled one!

It is great that you chose salad, and the healthiest option likely, in a stressful situation.

CortieTat · 04/06/2025 09:44

@Clearingaspace we have two (a must if you live in the middle of nowhere), one is an old banger and the other one is quite new. I had to get to DH with the cables to kickstart the new one.

DH is travelling today so likely no workouts for me, although I want to try the post-partum ones in my Les Mills app because they have a baby-in-the-carrier option.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/06/2025 10:10

It was my son’s birthday yesterday so although my meals were ok calories wise, we ate at a local pub so things like dressing and sauces etc would have been UPF. I also ate some birthday cake.

today I walked the dog and have had a little portion of cheese, ham and cherry toms which I grazed on while working. I’d like to run at lunchtime and I really do need to start doing the dumbbell workout I planned so will attempt that later. I have planned my meals, a salad and whole meal wrap for lunch, and dinner will be something with beef mince and veg & salad on the side

Enjoy the workout @thenewaveragebear1983, nothing beats the feeling after a strength training.

Yesterday I had:

Paleo granola, onaka and a banana

Leftover pea and apple chutney, ikea veg balls, steamed vegetables from an old frozen mix (found them in the freezer) with a bit of grated mozarella, soybeans.

Salad with chevre from Max Burgare (the least worst option)

Snacks: two coffees, dates (two), small doughnut, a homemade smoothie made with a banana, raw cocoa, silken tofu and kefir.

2013 kcal, 6km hike around the local lake with baby in a Tula.

Dumplings and steamed frozen vegetables mix

Snscks: Two coffees and matcha (homemade, although my tea ceremony leaves a lot to be desired) with oat milk, smoothie (oat milk, silken tofu and a banana), two dates, small doughnut.

2117 kcal, 6 km walk, Les Mills post-partum workout: very easy but it was the only option to do with baby strapped to my chest.

I’m going to bed early tonight, I spent most of my day driving DC around, normally this is something we share with DH so I’m knackered.

I had a dreadful nights sleep last night and as a result had a pretty UPF filled day to get me through the tiredness. There’s been too much cake and sugary stuff in my house this week, it’s been quite challenging. I’ve been shopping after work today so I have nice salad bits for tomorrow and the weekend, and I just need to keep completely away from the sugar because I just cannot moderate it so I need to have none.

Yesterday:

Overnight oats
Lunch: the same as the day before

Chicken, adzuki beans, small white beans, red peppers, onion and cavolo nero stir fried together with texmex spices, DC had theirs in wheat tortillas

Snacks:
Two coffees, a peach, almond magnum, small doughnut.

2117 kcal, lots of walking with DC to various sport activities, no time for exercise.

Our dining table is covered in lego, we are taking turns building the tuxedo cat. We avoid eating in front of screens or on the sofa so we’ve been having picnics on a blanket in the middle of the room for the last few days. It’s quite fun 🐈‍⬛

Clearingaspace · 06/06/2025 21:33

@CortieTat great idea with the picnic blanket- we often eat in front of the tv and it’s not great!

bf eggs and sourdough
L chicken roasted vegetables and pasta
D salmon jersey potatoes broccoli and peas
S chocolate waffle and an oatie

@CortieTat i sometimes make apple crumble like that with ground almonds - so yum! A couple of times I have skipped it as pudding with ice cream and then had it the next morning for breakfast with yogurt.

CortieTat · 10/06/2025 12:52

@Clearingaspace now I can’t stop thinking about Parma ham!

How is it going with the workouts? Do you already feel a difference?

Clearingaspace · 10/06/2025 14:29

@CortieTat yes I really am feeling so much better! The warm up for CG Ultimate Beginner is the same every day and quite demanding in my opinion 😂 but I am definitely getting more flexible and feel like my tummy isn’t as in the way as it was!! I am quite enjoying exercise which is weird, I think because I fit it in after work rather than getting up early.

I also prefer to exercise in the afternoon or evening. Have you noticed the improvement in proprioception yet? I remember this was something that really gave me the kick I needed at the beginning, this feeling of moving with so much more purpose and being aware of were I was in space. It was like finding a magic door at the end of the garden 😅. It wears off (I got used to it) after some time but at the beginning it was quite motivating.

Clearingaspace · 10/06/2025 15:18

I don’t think I have experienced that, I am pretty uncoordinated in general though! I do feel my posture is better which is a definite boost. Oh actually, gardening (heavy stuff) felt easier and I was more confident being on the step ladder with the hedge trimmer raised above my head! This was a big motivator as on my previous gardening session I was thinking how long will I be able to do this. Our en-suite bath is under the eaves so quite awkward to get out of and that also has improved.

Clearingaspace · 10/06/2025 15:22

😂😂😂 @CortieTat , you have put ideas in my head, I was waiting for the kettle to boil whilst typing my message. Once typed went to make the drink and I was really aware of how high my arms were lifted when pouring water from the kettle then used the other arm for milk 😂

Clearingaspace · 11/06/2025 13:39

Yesterday
skyr, seeds and peaches;
Lemon chicken breast with seeds added for crunch, kale steamed then crisped with olive oil;
more chicken (bad planning!) roasted with parsnips. Boiled/ steamed peas, carrots tender stem broccoli, baby corn, green beans, 1 tiny anya potato

i spoke too soon re exercise and found yesterday’s w/o a real slog!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/06/2025 07:41

I’m sorry I have totally fallen off the wagon this week, I’ve been sticking up my calories but totally disregarding the low/no UPF part! I’m racing on Sunday so I’ve just received a delivery of glucose gels and lucozade sport which is as UPF as it’s possible to get! You’re all doing so well! After Sunday I’ve got some clear space in my diary and a month to my birthday so I should be able to really get into the zone

@thenewaveragebear1983 best of luck with your race! What is the distance?

Yesterday we were mostly in the car and attending various sport events of older DC, so it’s leftovers and takeaways.

Half of falafel wrap for breakfast
Sweet potato noodles with wakame, cabbage, tofu and egg
Chevre salad from local fast food chain

Snacks: 3 coffees with oat milk, apple, small doughnut, winegums.

2267 kcal, didn’t have time for exercise.
