Hi

As my user name says this summer the Ryan Air seatbelt did not fit.
Yesterday I had to sit on a wooden deck chair and I found myself trying to Google what the weight limit could be

So tomorrow I start a diet.
So many threads on Mumsnet are for people much smaller than me
I'm 18 stones and 5lbs.

Please feel free to join if you are seriously overweight, please don't join if you are just averagely fat.

I’m new to this thread.

5’ 5”

104kg (apparently about 16 stone 5 lbs)

BMI 38.2 (the NHS calculator)

I don’t feel obese, I just feel chunky and non-bendy. But maybe that’s why I can’t shift weight, because I’m not looking at myself as others see me.

EvangelineFox · 24/02/2025 12:44

I feel your pain @ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself - my dance class teacher posted a photo of our class and I thought blimey, who is that podgy woman wearing the same top as me, I didn't notice her?! And then the penny dropped Sad

My issue is that I rarely have any time to spend on myself, DP is the laziest man in the world and will just stick the DC on screens all the time to give himself an easy life - I can only make it to my dance class as they happen to have sports club at the same time. Meal planning is my downfall...

18 stones 9 lbs

Could have been better but I'm still trying.

Well done Star

Minnie888 · 25/02/2025 21:57

Not doing brilliantly with sticking to it and have an interview tomorrow I'm stressing about! Still 2.5 stone down so would like to keep going (started September last year) so hoping my willpower continues....

@ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself I feel like this too, that im not that big. I think i carry my weight in proportion. My partner is super fit and buff and always adores my body so I guess I've been a bit deluded thinking i look ok. I need to lose at least 10kg...

Petra42 · 26/02/2025 09:11

Anyone feel that portion control is their downfall? A friend and i went for dinner and she just had starters and couldnt finish her main at all so took it home. I suspect she is on the injections but hasnt told me. However got me wondering about my portions. She seems to think i eat a lot rather than badly....

HealthyWeightBy40 · 26/02/2025 09:42

My problem is that once I open a (large) chocolate bar or packet of chocolates or chocolate biscuits, I feel as if I have to eat the whole lot even if it makes me feel sick Sad
And, yes, portions. I guess my stomach is large and I'm used to filling it.

Haruka · 26/02/2025 18:13

Yes, I eat healthily, but definitely too much, though my biggest downfall has always been liquid calories - alcohol and energy drinks. When I am off the former (the latter is a lost case) I drop the pounds very quickly.

purplesparklydinosaur · 27/02/2025 07:04

I feel like I have found my people! I’ve been dieting for a month now, but was 15 stone 2 at the start and I’m 5 foot 3. I have a weird history - 2 years ago I weighed 9 stone 5 and was an ultramarathon runner. I was hit by a car, nearly died and piled the weight on with immobility.

However, I’ve been heavier than this before. In my twenties I weighed 20 stone. Lost it when I divorced my exH!

Im healed well now and life has settled back down, so I am doing couch to 5k and counting calories, with a focus on eating massive piles of fruit and veg. That’s what worked last time! This morning I weighed 14 stone 5.

AutumnMagpies · 27/02/2025 07:06

You’ve lost nearly a stone in a month? Amazing!

Photos are a real eye opener . The other day I caught a side view of myself on FaceTime and was horrified. We are used to looking at ourselves face on . It’s those angles that show the double chins or the side view which shows the big stomach. I am sick of being fat. I’m losing weight slowly but steadily and when I have finished I am never putting it back on. Portion control is my issue and I realise I don’t get nearly enough exercise.

EvangelineFox · 28/02/2025 00:01

I'm always astonished when I see photos of me from around 10 years ago (pre-DC) and think blimey, I had such a slim face! Now I just look like a potato Sad Zoom calls are the worst for this, I find...

Minnie888 · 28/02/2025 07:37

@EvangelineFox there should be some kind of magic filter for video /online calls Blush

Well done Smile do you restrict carbs or just eat lots of fruit when hungry?

EvangelineFox · 28/02/2025 08:34

@Minnie888 I do so wish there was!!

@purplesparklydinosaur well done on your progress so far, and wow, it sounds like you lost half your body weight first time round, which is amazing! I've never been a runner (managed C25K a couple of times but that's it), can't imagine running a marathon let alone an ultramarathon. My friend's DH is currently training for an Ironman event and his Strava stats put mine to shame Blush I keep telling myself that any exercise is better than none, etc, but for me it just feels like a very slow process!

Minnie888 · 04/03/2025 20:01

FYI channel 4 dispatches right now covering medical weight loss jabs for anyone interested

EvangelineFox · 04/03/2025 23:57

Thanks @Minnie888, I'll watch that at some point Smile

Batch from Scratch is on Channel 4 too, I've watched all those episodes - really helpful - just need to find the time to do some planning!

Minnie888 · 09/03/2025 11:37

Another week down here... have slowed since Xmas to about a 1lb week or less... but it's keeping me on the diet so not worrying too much about getting extra steps in or restricting further. I am going to treat myself to an Oreo Cadbury cream egg later as I'm less than a 1lb from 3 stone Grin that's been nearly 6 months though and not been easy Smile started 18 stone 3lbs now 15 stone 3lbs feeling much better for it but looking forward to coming off the diet at some point Wink

EvangelineFox · 11/03/2025 00:04

Wow, massive well done to you @Minnie888 !!

I'm on a bit of a reorganisation drive at the moment, trying to go through my fridge/ freezer/ cupboards to find things to use up - hopefully it will help with the meal planning...!

Minnie888 · 24/03/2025 21:19

Is anyone still here….? Feeling a little lonely on this epic journey Bear been an OK couple of weeks for me, not a lot of loss at all but no gains either I guess… now 6 months on the diet novelty well and truly worn off Blush

making good choices more and more now, I feel I have the energy for that extra walk I wouldn’t have attempted before and to think about cycling again so that can’t be bad Star

Sunshineandrainbow · 24/03/2025 22:27

I am still here but come to a bit of a stall. Off work this week and finding it hard to be out of the routine of work.
Was going to up the walking but have broken my toe on Friday so can't over do it.

We all have weeks like that… I have really slowed up on the losses which erodes the motivation! So sorry to hear about your toe sounds painful hopefully eased up and mends quickly Smile

Jaq27 · 25/03/2025 11:43

Hi ... hope I can join? My problem is I'm always seen as overweight on the charts because I am small.
:(
Height - 5ft 1inch. Age 59. Last year I weighed over 13 stone. Obese for my height.
Lots of stresses and too much wine didn't help healthy habits.
I moved to the seaside last year and now weigh 12 stone 4lbs. Still obese but feeling better about myself.
So I am walking more - 2-3 miles a day sometimes more.
Portion control
Lots of healthy veg stir-fries and more salads
Minimal bread (1 slice sour dough)
Keep 'nibbles' handy - apple and a mini cheese, hard boiled egg, Alpo mini yogurt
Cut out the 4 o' clock biscuits !
Eating very few late evening snacks/crisps/toasties
BUT ...! The biggest change I made was no longer cooking the 'big' evening meal for my family. It set me free!
I no longer meal plan for them, or cook carb heavy meals like pasta, potatoes, burger in a bun, chips etc. which I always ended up eating.
I still have small portions of lasagne, roast dinner etc. if I cook at weekends.

Looking for support because I am doing this on my own and I know how hard it is. I've lost weigh on SW and WW in the past and then put it back on (and more).

So hard to keep motivated when you keep to your plan but don't lose a single lb in 4 weeks (this is regular for me).

Jaq27 · 25/03/2025 18:44

So just had a look at the NHS BMI chart and my BMI is 32.5
Obese of course.
But then this too ...
'The best weight for your height is between 7 stone and 9 stone 6 pounds.'
😧😩😳
Utterly ridiculous.

I would look awful if I weighed 7 bloody stone!
My aim is get down to 10st 3lbs which I achieved on SW about 15 years ago.
I looked good and felt great at that weight.

That's a weight loss target of just over 2 stone which sounds more achievable than 5 bloody stone.

Totally agree on this is madness!! My frame doesn’t support what BMI tells me is normal… but as you say aim for a weight you know is right for you and keep on track as much as possible. Great to see you here Smile
