Thought I'd save you the hassle @poorpaws.

Well done for those who have lost and good luck to those struggling.

My focus at the moment is just to be wiser for food selection and to keep active. The slow moving scales can wait although I did check this morning and showing I'm nearly back to 14 and a half stone.

Merry Christmas everyone, I hope you've all had a lovely Christmas Day.

I'm dreading the scales as I've been overeating for some time but it's very nearly 2023 and this will be the year we all do it, right? 👍

TalkToTheHand123 · 25/12/2022 23:27

Merry Xmas all.

I hope so @poorpaws . I'm sure you'll be back on track soon.

I did a 20min slow walk on the treadmill tonight and some weights to try undo some over-indulgence (in improvement on last year though) and also as it helps me sleep really well.

Finally starting to make inroads with the housework over the last few weeks, so hopefully if I can keep at it, it will help keep me away from some unnecessary food!

All the best x

Oh well done @BeyondMyWits . So pleased for you. What’s your bes5 tip?

BeyondMyWits · 26/12/2022 07:47

Haha... @Zebracat ,tips on losing a stone and half in 7 whole months... (21lb in 31weeks) I'd say perseverance...😁

I think I've managed so far because, to be perfectly honest about it, I have an awful lot to lose. People with just a stone to lose are going to find it so much harder than me with 4 or 5 that I want rid of.

But I guess my biggest tip has to be, keep checking in on here. I noticed every time I go awol I plateau. When I check in here a couple of times a week, I get it moving again. The value of the support on here with no judgement is just immense. We are all in a similar boat, we all have similar issues and we are all here to lift everyone up.

Fingers crossed for anyone weighing in today... I did mine on Christmas eve for a reason ... 😆

effiesgoldwig · 26/12/2022 09:51

Weighing in today I am 16st 12.5. So only a half pound gain. I'm taking that as a win over Christmas for sure! One more day of festive celebrations with family today and then I can restart the healthy choices.

Jumbocoffee · 26/12/2022 10:28

I’ve stopped following the Cambridge diet as I was failing more than succeeding so I think for me I’m looking at consistency and good habits. Off to family’s today and have a family meal on Wednesday so I think I’ll start a fresh tomorrow. I need to look at what I’m eating as I’ve become so lost with what to make as I’ve got two kids who are autistic and have a very limited diet. Teenager wants to go abroad next year and I cannot weight 16 and a half stone then. So that’s my goal.

Zebracat · 26/12/2022 17:05

Aargh just lost a long post. Well done to everyone, keep posting, keep trying, don’t worry about enjoying food and the odd treat. It is about consistency and finding some support.

Lilyyy · 26/12/2022 18:46

hi 😊I need to diet. I really need to do something now, with two and a half stone to lose.
considering the fast 800 as im desperate but also don’t want to set myself up for failure

Hi @Lilyyy - I think you just have to find what works for you. I have tried everything and find that I am most comfortable ( and lose ) with low carb and much smaller portions than I was eating previously . For me it has to be something I can do for the rest of my life

TalkToTheHand123 · 27/12/2022 13:03

Aww @BeyondMyWits , what's your secret?

I've not long accepted a big bar of chocolate. I don't know whether to get rid of it or try moderate myself.

I've managed a couple of 20mins slow walking on the treadmill last couple of days, hopefully become a regular occurrence and get some scales benefit in the next few days.

TalkToTheHand123 · 27/12/2022 13:07

@Lilyyy , what's your situation? Do you have many to cook for and any fussy eaters? Are you lead astray for drinks or meals often?

OP posts:
Nishky32 · 27/12/2022 13:25

@TalkToTheHand123 I am keeping my Christmas chocolate ( and ginger fudge) to try and moderate myself over the coming weeks.

In the past I would eat it all in 2 days to ‘get rid’ of it so I could ‘start again’ - I have hardly eaten any this year

I will let you know how I get on with the moderation thing

TalkToTheHand123 · 27/12/2022 13:35

Aww @Nishky32 , good luck with it.

I usually scoff the lot in one go. I improved slightly last time I bought chocolate, but not by much so decided to try not buy it at all.

I'm going to try allow myself one small square per day and tell myself I'll just waste it if I scoff the lot as I will just feel sick.

poorpaws · 28/12/2022 08:42

Good morning everyone, I hope you have all had a lovely Christmas.

I'm here today to tell you that I can't wait until the 1st January to start my new weight journey. I have to start it today, I feel like I'm wearing a fat suit! I'm emptying the fridge and most of the cupboards of everything calorific and sending it all home with DP tonight.

I thought it might be a good idea if any of us are making weight loss related resolutions to post them here, so these are mine:

  1. I intend to make exercise part of my daily routine. I'm not including dog walking in this because that is already a daily routine. I'm talking about an exercise DVD, an extra walk, more housework, etc.
  1. Try to lose at least something per week, if it's only quarter of a pound. I've already re-started with HappyScale to record my progress/lack of progress.
  1. Drink more water. I wanted this last year and failed miserably but I would like to exchange my fizzy drinks at dinner time to water at the very least.
  1. Cook a wider range of calorie friendly meals. I tend to eat a few of the same things every week. I want to eat more fish and chicken which I enjoy anyway, so that shouldn't be difficult.
  1. Stop over-buying in the supermarket every week. I don't need the fridge absolutely full, the cupboards bursting and the freezer, which I can't even get a small container into. I need to leave a bit of space everywhere and spend a lot less while still eating very healthily.
  1. I want to exchange fruit for chocolate. Yes I know fruit still has sugars, but I love sweet things and I can't give up everything. So a nice crispy jazz apple instead of a giant bar of dairy milk has to be a good exchange.
  1. Post here more often for support - priceless!

These are just a few of my ideas and when I've had a long think about it I can probably add a lot more to this list, but these will do to be going on with. If you would like to join me in adding your own resolutions here please do. I would like 2023 to be the year we ALL make good progress.

Nishky32 · 28/12/2022 09:15

@poorpaws mine are:

  1. walk every day
  2. strength training x3 per week - I want to lose enough to ride (horses not bikes) and strength will make riding easier. I have weights and dumbbells at home
  3. mindful hunger-check I am truly hungry and not just emotional/habit/bored eating - then stop at ‘enough’ not over full
  4. home cooked meals with large portions of veg

number 2 is the biggest challenge- I hate working out to a video so YouTube is no good. I need a book to follow a routine- first job of the new year

effiesgoldwig · 28/12/2022 10:02

Great plans! I'm not waiting for the 1st jan either. Back on it today - I had 4 days off and regained a pound in that time so I can't do that again.

I'm sticking with calorie counting and using MyNetDiary to track my meals. Going to the gym tonight and then hoping to manage to stick with it once I'm back at work.

triplecheeese · 28/12/2022 20:39

@Nishky32, I can recommend New Rules of Lifting for Women for a weightlifting book. Some of the theory has aged badly and sounds a bit patronising these days, but it's got workout plans with no-gym alternatives and a huge index of exercises at the back. I've started and abandoned every programme going but this book I do use. You could also try jefit if you want an app with programmes but its not very user friendly.

klaxon: I'm running a marathon in April! So my goals are:

  1. bloody well make time for exercise for me. I always bloody well come bloody last in this house and it's bloody bollocks.
  2. be realistic with training. I'm not an Olympian. I've run a few before in my pre kids days. Three runs a week would be excellent, less is fine too.
  3. reduce the guilt and shame and stress associated with eating. My first goal when I joined this thread several months (and a stone) ago, was to cook nutritious family meals and stop turning to takeaways because cooking was too hard with having tiny kids. We do still have a weekly takeaway but I got there. Now it's time to let go of the shame around shopping! Not feeling stressed about buying the snacks for the kids they actually eat instead of the ones I want them to eat, buying preprepared foods so I know I can use them in a rush, not feeling guilty for not growing my own yoghurt or whatever.
  4. like @poorpaws, reducing sugar habits. Im still breastfeeding but baby is 18mo so I don't need daily cake any more...
  5. put away the Christmas chocolate without eating it all!

well done to everyone who has started already, onwards and downwards!

TalkToTheHand123 · 29/12/2022 00:27

Worst day for dieting in a very long time. I thought it would be a great idea going to pizza hut and stuffing my face with pizza and ice cream, then having the last of the chocolate bar tonight. Some alcohol too.

I did go to the gym earlier on and did 20 mins slow walk on treadmill tonight at home then some weights to limit damage. Braved a weigh in and better than I thought at 15 and a quarter stone ish.

Plan to avoid pizza hut and chocolate for a while and get back on the soup. Avoiding alcohol would be a bonus 🤭

poorpaws · 29/12/2022 08:12

@Nishky32 your plan sounds great, we've both just got to make sure we actually do it. I'm great at making plans and then totally ignoring them 😳 not this time!

@TalkToTheHand123. We've all been there, just write it off. I'm back on the soup too. I plan to have it every day for lunch followed by an apple. I did add thin strips of cooked turkey yesterday and it was delicious.

@triplecheeese good time for you to be first in your household instead of last. You've got good plans, just stick to them. You've done so well this year (and put me to shame) you should be very proud of yourself (I'm very proud of you) and I bet you look fantastic. I intend to follow your lead in the new year.

I did very well yesterday on my first foray (again) into healthy eating and being much better with food and exercise. It absolutely threw it down with rain all morning, so I cleaned the fridge and sorted it all out. (I didn't think it could ever take that long to clean a fridge). Took the dogs out later and got soaking wet, and then started on the freezer (just a four drawer, small one). Didn't manage my DVD exercises but was busy all day. DP went home with two large carrier bags of Christmas food so there's very little left here to tempt me. Strangely enough I really enjoyed my soup at lunchtime and smaller evening meal, I think I've had enough of all the excess. Also had a large jug of cold water with lemon slices, it was lovely and I've got a jug in my nearly empty fridge for today.

For those still indulging, enjoy and start again next year. For those of us starting earlier, good luck, keep up with the good plans and stay positive.

TalkToTheHand123 · 29/12/2022 13:03

Aww thanks @poorpaws . I wasn't too dispondent as I'm quite confident I'm gaining more control over my eating.

Made some mushroom and also some carrot soup last night and turned out quite palatable so nice to have a bit of variety. Having the odd slice of toast just so I feel like I'm actually eating.

effiesgoldwig · 29/12/2022 19:44

Ugh I have tonsillitis and the baby was awake all night. No gym for me today. I've stuck to my calorie allowance but exercising is out of the window yet again.

Nishky32 · 29/12/2022 20:39

@triplecheeese thank you for the book recommendation- will look that up

poorpaws · 29/12/2022 21:06

Hi everyone.

Reporting in to say that today has been another fairly decent day. The food has gone quite well and I've done a bit of housework and of course the dog walk so I'm hoping to see the scales a little more balanced than they would have been had I carried on with Christmas binge eating.

How is everybody celebrating New Year? Unfortunately I dread this time because I have an exceptionally nervous dog who shakes from the tip of her nose to the end of her tail when the New Year fireworks go off. I fear I will be sitting with her wrapped in a blanket, holding her tight . We seem to have more than our fair share of fireworks in my area and they sound as if they're directly overhead. Given a choice I would just go to bed and forget New Year but I don't want to leave her. (I know the experts say to just treat them like there is no noise but she's nearly 9 and over the years I've tried everything and having her sit with me is the only thing that works).

@effiesgoldwig sorry to hear that you are not well and the baby kept you up all night. I hope you will be feeling much better very soon and able to get back to the gym. In the meantime look after yourself and I'll keep my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery.

Zebracat · 29/12/2022 21:50

@poorpaws. Thank you. I need to call time on Christmas too. I haven’t had any really bad days, it’s just creeping away from me. Crumpets for breakfast, dripping with butter and honey. Mince pie elevenses. Chocolate after lunch. Ice cream after tea. Gained 2 kilos. It took me weeks to lose that weight.
I do know that’s probably the best I have ever done over Christmas. I didn’t have huge meals and I kept off the snacks. So I’m not berating myself. But I do need to get a grip.
Im going away for 2 nights so won’t have total control over my meals, but I will start the days with porridge, be mindful of portions and refuse snacks.
Just bought a skirt in the Sale at John Lewis. It is an 18 and really tight. I want it to fit nicely in a month. I do think it’s a small 18 tho!
Other goals : Weigh daily and track food. Drink more water. Don’t buy butter.
Swim twice a week. Weight today 99.7 kilos.

TalkToTheHand123 · 29/12/2022 23:15

Doing an 8-8 new year eve then 8-8 New years day so not much. Not too fussed though. Plenty other opportunities.😊
