Hello!!! welcome to our new home let the virtual house warming begin

OP posts:
Flossam · 22/01/2005 18:12

Well i got them on and could do them up, rather tight and unflattering but not bad considering i couldn't do that a week ago and they're the trousers i was in before being pregnant. so if i carry on maybe i'll be able to loose some actual weight in the next few weeks!! on a negative note, we went out for coffee this afternoon and DP thought it to be a good idea to bring me a slice of starbucks chocolate cake. . I'm afraid i did eat it, it was right there in front of me, and it was gorgeous! I am sure he is trying to thwart me!!

bunny2 · 22/01/2005 18:16

Remember the 80:20 rule Flossam - 20% of the time you can eat what you please as long as you are good 80% of the time. I had a Thai red curry and most of a bottle of wine last night as well as some chocolate. Well done for getting your jeand done up.

Evesmama · 22/01/2005 21:17

6 days with no choccy

Kittypickle · 23/01/2005 10:35

Well done Flossam, that's very impressive for a week. Evesmum, 6 days is also impressive, have you got any withdrawal symptoms ?!

Thanks for that Bunny2 - Ihad a go at it last week, I was just being nosey and wondering what sort of things other people were eating. I'm at a bit of a cross roads with all this at the moment - I am really bored of WW's, I've been doing it on and off now for about 3 years (got interrupted by being pregnant) and the class I joined the other day is absolutely mindblowingly rubbish. There's a really good SW class not far from here, and I'm thinking of going next week, but can't quite make my mind up. Whatever I do though, I'm going to continue to try to stick to as many low GI foods as possible as I do feel better when I'm doing it.

Right, I am off to get my family up and out of this house before the sunshine goes - won't gain much in the way of bonus points as DS's walking is likely to be very slow in his first pair of wellies !!

monkeygirl · 23/01/2005 11:37

Well done Flossam on inch loss - always very satisfying and more accurate than scales.

And good on you EM - have you not even had any of those choccy low-cal drinks??

Kittypickle, I am also flirting with the GI diet but have only been doing it for about 10 days. If all goes well today tomorrow at my official weigh-in I will have lost 4lbs in a week. I definitely feel less hungry on it and am not even really strict. Actually that's what good about it I think cos it never says don't have something (like Atkins) but avoid.

Yesterday I had porridge for breakfast with soya milk (occasionally I add a swirl of syrup as well ), a wholemeal turkey and tomato sandwich, some nuts, cottage cheese, apple, apricot and a banana for snacks and spaghetti bol for tea followed by a low-fat yoghurt. Oh and 2 glasses of wine but I usually only do that Friday and Saturday (allow myself a bottle a week). I have cut down how much pasta I have in a sitting (but my usual one would have been huge!).

The other day I had a chick-pea, chorizo and pepper stew (recipe in the tesco's book) which was lovely - even dh requested it again for tea.

I know I'm only a newbie at it really but hope that helps. Unlike other diets I've tried I am determined to stick at this one cos there is no counting/measuring and it's pretty sensible - but ask me again in 2 weeks time, by which time I might have knawed off my children's legs from hunger .

Btw couldn't help noticing a cheesecake in Tesco's which said '6 generous portions' - PMSL as it still looked like one 2 of us could polish off and still have room for more!

monkeygirl · 23/01/2005 13:36

GI diet alert - it does not improve your spelling:

gnaw not knaw - doh!

Evesmama · 23/01/2005 20:22

thanks kittypickly and monkeygirl
i havent really had any probs with craving choc..i think all these years, ive just 'thought' i needed it and was just kidding myself, but at this moment in time...okay..steady yourselves...i wouldnt thank you for any..says she who would happilly eat box after box of jaffa cakes
also feel the same about our usual takaways and normal crap we used to eat...whoahhh! can you see my halo shining

Evesmama · 23/01/2005 20:41

hello..

bunny2 · 23/01/2005 20:45

mg - good luck with the weigh-in tomorrow.

I am really impressed with low GI foods, I didnt lose on Atkins or WW, I gained on SW so this GI is my last hope. So far I am really impressed with it as a diet for life - for me the low blood sugar was as bad as being too big and with this diet my blood sugar stays constant. It's great. Must summon up courage to jump on scales.

Hello EM, still no chocolate??? Im impressed. When I was on SW, I remember freezing grapes to try and fool myself they were boiled sweets no such cravings this time.

Evesmama · 23/01/2005 20:47

did you really gain on s.w???mind you..i couldnt get the hang of ww cos i went to s.w for so long..i get easilly confused

bunny2 · 23/01/2005 20:58

Dior, I found WW point-counting made me obsessed with the next meal. I know many people who have done well on it but it just didnt suit me. SW can lead to overeating - that is exactly what I did .

bunny2 · 23/01/2005 20:59

Yep, I gained 2.5 lbs after 1 wk on SW!

Evesmama · 23/01/2005 21:02

yeah, i suppose you could overeat on s.w, but as long as i was on a green day i was fine, but a red day had me stumped...couldnt do anything like that again as i felt i was too pressured and put to much resposability on consultant to 'make me lose weight'..thats what i was paying her for wasnt it

Evesmama · 23/01/2005 21:21

i agree, when i did s.w, i was my'life' and when i started going of track, i felt like i was going to the dentist each week

bunny2 · 23/01/2005 21:33

The problem I find with any diet is I am constantly thinking about what I am going to eat - I think it is the forward-planning that is hard for me. That is why a slight adjustment in thefoods I normally eat seems to be my best way forward. I do miss the motivation of a slimming club though, even when I was gaining weight on SW, I stuck rigidly to the diet as I was so motivated by the weigh-ins. DOing a gi diet I am on my own which is why I have managed to avoid weighing myself so far.

monkeygirl · 23/01/2005 22:07

bunny2 - why don't you pick a weigh-in day and post here your loss/gain or would that be too traumatic? Well I hope not cos, although loads of people are doing well, others, including me, and especially me, do not lose something every week. Also, don't know how much you have to lose, but losing a substantial amount always seems to have peaks, troughs and plateaus (unless you are one of the Lighterlife ladies - where have they gone btw??).

And yes I too am still obsessed with food, and dieting atm - really struggle to not think about my next meal or snack or about what's in the fridge!

Kittypickle · 23/01/2005 22:21

AAAAGGGGHHHHH Gaining on SW ? Please tell me it's not true !!! I was going to go on Tuesday. I did join when I was pregnant and put on a pound and a half in a week but was convinced it was hormonal.

LunarSea · 24/01/2005 10:33

bunny2 - why don't you join in the "Mamas" threads, then you'll have a reason for a weekly weigh-in, and the motivation that everyone else will be able to see how well (or not) you've done. Works for me, although I'd never go to a club and have to be weighed in public!

GI sounds good from what I've seen of it. I've been (loosely) doing South Beach, which is fairly similar (based a lot on GI values, but some extra stuff about good and bad fats, etc too) and as you say it's hardly any different to what I was doing anyway. Just the same things (except that I've cut out wheat completely) but in different proportions - but it seems to have made a big difference overall.

I really can see myself doing this for ever, at least on days when I'm in full control of what I eat - getting it right when eating out is still a bit of a problem. Hopefully I won't be needing to actually lose weight for ever though! Having been doing this for 8 months now it doesn't really feel now as if I'm having to make any sacrifices to stick to it. It's not a diet any more, it's my diet IYSWIM?

bran · 24/01/2005 13:51

Hi everyone - it's nice to see how positive everyone is considering it such a miserable time of year. I'm trying my best to be very good this week, following last week's gain. I'm a little over my points though, about 0.5 points a day, but hopefully next week I will have fully adjusted to my new points level.

It's really interesting to hear about people's experience with GI (and South Beach), I think it's definitely helping me with WW but I don't think I could trust myself not to have too much if I wasn't counting points.

Monkeygirl, what is that Tesco's recipe book called, the recipes sound great? I had a quick look on their website last night, but it was acting up and I couldn't search for books. Thanks.

MrsBigD · 24/01/2005 13:53

did my weigh in on Saturday and only lost 1/2 kg Had a bit of a stressful week and those chocolate chip cookies dh brought home (could kill him) just called out to me. Ah well at least still lost some as opposed to put on some
Trying to be good this week as my father will come visit next week and he loves to cook to feed an army!

bran · 24/01/2005 14:48

Half a kilo is good MrsBigD, especially considering there were biscuits. Every little bit counts towards the total.

monkeygirl · 24/01/2005 21:02

Well done MBD - agree that every little bit counts and it all adds up.

I've already crowed once today but oh well, lost 5lbs last week! It was my first full week on the GI diet so guess that might account for it. Am alreaady dreading the weekend as we are going to the MIL's who is having a party and they will definitely all try to force-feed me fat and things - gulp.

Bran - the book is the Gi Guide which cost £3.99 (or £2.99 now I think if you buy a Sunday Times with it). It's a general guide with a few recipes in it but am eyeing up the spinach and ham lasagne and Moroccan chicken amongst one or two others.

Am off to watch the prog about Praeda-Willi (sp??) syndrome!
