☀️THE SUMMER COUNTDOWN THREAD ☀️

Fresh new month, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself in time for a Sizzling Summer!

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating to LOSE or MAINTAIN. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (Weigh On Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and generally eat twice a day.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Hi @Graphista I missed your earlier post, welcome back ❤️ Like you, my exercise of choice is yoga (do at home) and swimming. Swimming is my favourite but afterwards I’m too shattered to do much else that day.

@SanFranBear it gives me stress zaps/anxiety to imagine you walking alone, ear buds in listening to True Crime Murders 💀 Then again I’m not that brave and slightly a bit risk averse 😬

@TheRealHousewife many thanks not only for the threads but also the very kind pms which led me back here

@Crazzzycat posted in error

unlike less processed food, these all tend to come in handy, perfectly portioned 100 calorie packets.

I have the same issue! Pre portioned healthier foods would be great

For anyone reading and thinking 'should I?'.. you most definitely should. This is such a welcoming, friendly thread full of support, friendship and fabulous tips! Definitely helps keep me accountable but also lifts me up when things aren't doing so great!!

Bears repeating!

Fantastic thread which I often recommend elsewhere on mn

@milkfromthesleepycow I need to stop using sugar in tea and cereal and go back to using sweeteners

@Morred welcome I've a lot to lose too, I find "happy scale" app for weight tracking (log book and graph which I find very motivational) and "my model" app which generates an image of how you look now and how you'll look at goal which I also like - I appreciate it's not for everyone

Small goals are good as they're easily achievable, I aim roughly for 1lb loss a week and set half stone goals.

@NoviceNetwork similar to you I had a wake up call last year - I'd long been fat but "healthy" then my bp went up (I've always had a tendency to be low if anything) and that's what brought me to the thread. I lost 1.5 stone last year, unfortunately personal circumstances bumped me off the wagon and it's taken me a while to get in the right headspace to climb back on but I am hoping I can clamber in now

Sending healthy blessings to you too

@echobelly if you can't keep using the noom app to track what I've done is created myself a food tracker on my phone spreadsheet app. Sheet per month, 2 columns per day. "Title" column - breakfast; lunch; dinner; supper; snacks; drinks, daily left hand column I list what I have eaten/drank right hand column the cals in the item, bottom of right hand column I "sum" the days total calories then below that an equation to calculate how many cals I've used - 1st row there - my own personal allowance (I use nhs bmi calculator as guidance, at the moment), 2nd row the Cals used, 3rd row the cals I have left (if any)

As follows

TOTAL CALS CONSUMED TODAY

CALS AVAILABLE
Cal used
Cal left

Happy to help with the formula if anyone would like to do similar?

At first there was a lot of looking up cal amounts and logging but eventually

1 the spreadsheet itself you can search items

2 you remember the ones you use most frequently - eg I know by heart now how many cals in 2 slices of the bread I use

but not sure what to do about restaurants (where I reckon you're hard pressed to find stuff under 500 cals) and a bit sad about lack of treats when out and about.

I've said before I really struggle with this!

When in town I cannot find anywhere that does a decent range of healthy vegetarian options even less so a decent range of salads! Even McDonald's etc used to do a couple they've now disappeared off the menus seemingly in favour of plant based junk!

Have a good day everyone. Don't forget your water and add an extra vegetable to your meals today. When I can go out again I am going to buy some vegetables I have never cooked with before.

Excellent reminder

I have some okra in the freezer which I've eaten before and I love but never cooked with so I need to try that (was on offer in local Sainsburys) - any tips anyone? Stir fry seems the obvious option

I kept buying fresh steam veg bags then not eating them and throwing them out so I've now ordered frozen version instead. Super lazy but I don't care works for me just now as I am still having trouble getting pans for the cooker!

Managed to get a wok hence stir fry an option

@ElderflowerTonic you're same height as me but much lighter!

Re crisps me too but I try and have carrot sticks/celery/pepper strips instead. Seasoned with garlic grinder (I pop in a wee food bag, season, hold bag closed an shake it - a bit like salt and shake crisps!) very tasty and satisfyingly crunchy, sometimes have with a mini pot low fat hummus (main supermarkets do stackers of 3 pots)

@SunshineCake I'm Heeeeere!!

@Puffalicious good to see you again too!

Very happy to rejoin 🐢 club

I'm also going to focus on improving me over the next 13 weeks; so hair, skin care, brows, nails and improving my sleep.

My hair and nails really suffered I think due to Covid, I also have dermotillomania so I've been working really hard on improving these areas too. Been cleansing/toning/moisturising at least once a day, consitioning hair and trying not to brush too hard, I've a ton of vitamins I MEAN to take daily but don't always remember will try and be more on top of that.

@SunshineCake my teeth fell apart at start of lockdown and I've not made it to a dentist yet! Highly dentophobic so I'm dreading but they need sorted - the challenge of course finding an nhs dentist!

I'm also adjusting to 1st varifocals - any tips anyone?

@Gakatsbsk welcome it's surprising how quickly healthy changes can make us feel more energised and motivated I've 4 stone to lose but even 4-5lbs and I really notice a difference

@Eesha bacon isn't great in a number of ways, fat, salt, processed, nitrates...

I'm veggie so don't eat real bacon but the Richmond and quorn rashers are quite nice I'd say the Richmond ones nicest

Avocado and hummus nothing wrong with those really, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals, fibre...

Herbalife is a mlm is it not? Friend likely has an agenda and unlikely to be actually well educated on nutrition and weight loss

I agree with @SunshineCake no food should be demonised, the only food I'm aware of that is nutritionally useless are boiled sweets as they're really just sugar and water

@Echobelly digital scales are so much easier! Especially for those of us with less accurate eye sight!

@ImALittlePea so sorry about the vandalism did they catch the shits ?
It seems not so annoying

I'd forgotten curly Wurlys as a lower cal but takes time to eat option will grab some next time I'm at shop, I like them out the fridge. I'm afraid Turkish delight is my usual choc go to though I'm not a big choc person generally

@CrimsonAlligator thanks for the reminder that yeast is a good source of b vits I take a supplement as veggie but food is better and I have marmite in

@SunshineCake So sorry about scan results being unwelcome - what kinda scan? Uterine cancer related? Hopefully it's not, but even if it is the outcomes are pretty good especially if caught early.

So sorry about dd how is she doing?

She doesn't want help.

Surely the hcps should be seeing now that she isn't the right person to assess this?! They released her very quickly they don't seem to really want to sort this properly do they? I get where she's coming from but they're not all the same there are SOME good ones

@Riddlediddle Welcome - when I still had periods I could gain as much as 10lbs in the run up and then lose that + a fortnight later (I have endo)

@12weekstoloseweight welcome - my advice would be not to JUST cut out things you normally eat but replace them with something lower calorie - otherwise you get hungry/feel deprived and that's when you go off track. Drink plenty (mainly water, if not then sugar free stuff) and have lots of non carb veggies (carby veggies inc things like peas and sweetcorn so be careful - you can have these but watch the cals. Veg like carrots, celery, salad veg, mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes etc are better) to fill you up

Does anyone else constantly compare their weight to previous points in time where they've been lighter or lost weight?

Yes! Which is probably very daft!

Then Covid of course added a lot more.

I lost loads with Covid as I couldn't eat! Was barely surviving on soup and water mainly

@Eesha as Per pps your friends that lost through Herbalife haven't lost that much in terms of time etc and how long have they KEPT it off for ?

@SNAFU247 Welcome

and I really can't be using 'I just had a baby' as my excuse any longer!

Yea I tried that - she's 21 now! Defo can't use that excuse any more Grin

I'm same height as you and every lb shows!!! I was a flipping size 8 before dd!

@ginsparkles maybe try the "my model" app and see how you would look with the weight off? Might be the jolt you need? You can change the outfit to one similar to the one you wannna wear?

@HouseofHolbein sorry about situation with your eldest. I've been on both sides of that at times. It's tough. I'm considering a 2nd ear piercing when I have the time/money and possibly a belly button one as my goal weight reward maybe a first tattoo too. Ooh! Just occurred to me that could be a good birthday gift for me! Mums been asking and I've been struggling to think of something. A tattoo could be just the ticket I know exactly what I want have for years - but not cheap

Love the piercing

@HouseofHolbein noted - hard to get head around the name changes

Now stop leaving us!!

Sorry Blush. Will try and stick around properly again - it keeps me in the right headspace

I worked with someone who worked at Bletchley park at one point he wasn't able to say more than that but we had lots of conversations about is life and career and...reading between the lines I think he was something of a James Bond in his youth. He was fascinating and also an incredibly tolerant and calm person all around.

Swimming is my favourite but afterwards I’m too shattered to do much else that day.

I'll likely be scunnered for at least 2 days after! So I'm planning to go thu as I have a rest day planned Fri anyway

ginsparkles · 10/05/2022 20:31

Ok so I am closing out the day on 1196 cals.

Kept my fluids up, made sensible choices when I did have a snack.

Day off work tomorrow which is usually a challenge but have a very busy day so I hope I'll be able to avoid the snacking.

TheRealHousewife · 10/05/2022 20:49

You are most welcome @Graphista . In regards to varifocals, I couldn’t get used to them so I have multiple pairs of glasses, one pair for driving, one pair for walking around and a pair of prescription sunglasses also the strength for driving😬. Sorry that’s not much help. PS I love your posts, so helpful, supportive and inclusive 👍👏❤️

@ginsparkles Sounds like you’ve had an on point day 👏 i find the busier I am I don’t think about food so much 👍 Enjoy your day off!

ImALittlePea · 10/05/2022 21:20

Glad you're feeling better @Puffalicious

It's only natural to fret @SunshineCake but you're doing such a wonderful job of everything. I truly admire your strength 💪

That lunch sounds blooming delish @Benjispruce4 🤤

ImALittlePea · 10/05/2022 21:28

Unfortunately not @Graphista they haven't even really bothered. The inconvenience is ongoing and is the most irritating thing about it all. We'll get there.

1056 calories today (again, according to mfp - I do take it with a bit of a pinch of salt). According to the app, if every day is like today I'll be at my goal weight in 5 weeks 😅

(Every day won't be like today though)

We've just booked another little holiday! Not going very far for either trip away (can't face the car sickness from the kids) but so good to have some breaks to look forward to (and motivate me with the food choices)!

ginsparkles · 10/05/2022 21:32

@Graphista ... I haven't seen that app but I'll hunt it out. Ultimately I just need to look at the photos from pre back injury to get the thinspiration!

Ps ... welcome back Smile

Flowers111 · 10/05/2022 21:52

@HouseofHolbein was that sore ? Thinking of getting one. Can't settle on a tattoo at all. Too many options.

I feel a bit sick, I never have breakfast, had a sandwich for lunch (healthy & calorie counted). Aimed for a run then DH bringing home pizza (let's call it pizza but it wasn't but similar). So I said I'll go for a run (only 0-5k walk/ run etc). And have 2 slices. Well within calories.
Came home, had 2. He went to shop -'want anything ? Choc I shouted. Of course he gets me a large Cadbury daim bar 120g and i mindlessly ate 80% 🙄 what is wrong with me !

Puffalicious · 10/05/2022 21:53

Hey Graphista 🐢🐢🐢

Flowers111 · 10/05/2022 21:54

@graphista - varifocals - my only advice is don't bother 😁mine are at the back of a drawer now

Echobelly · 10/05/2022 22:17

Thanks @Graphista - managed only 999 calories today despite fairly large lunch and salt and sweet popcorn snack in afternoon.

BTW, can highly recommend my go-to salad for asparagus season; very easy and quick, really nice, and only around 100 cals if you minimise the olive oil:

4-6 steamed asparagus (depending on size)
2 tomatoes, quartered
2 good handfuls of fresh coriander, don't need to chop it, you're using it more like a salad leaf

You could use more asparagus and tomato if hungrier, but I find it quite filling as is!

Dressing
teaspoon of olive oil (or tablespoon if you can spare the calls)
Tablespoon lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon dried cumin

ginsparkles · 10/05/2022 22:23

@Flowers111 ... oh god I could have written that! That is so what happens in this house too!
Draw a line, tomorrows a new day.

Puffalicious · 10/05/2022 22:39

Finishing the day on 1205 cals. Bit more than usual, but I needed 2 ginger nuts, I did. Broke my 16:8, but some days needs must (DS3 is ill as is DH and 2 teens in study mode!). Not even annoyed at myself, it is what it is.

Benjispruce4 · 10/05/2022 22:52

Now I want a ginger nut! I don’t even like biscuits much but I love a dunked ginger nut!!!!!

12weekstoloseweight · 11/05/2022 06:23

SanFranBear · 11/05/2022 07:29

Woohoo for the WoW'ers - hope everyone has such a positive start to their day.

I just wanted to pop on and say SNAP, Benji - a dunked ginger nut is truly Food of the Gods 😋

TheRealHousewife · 11/05/2022 07:31

Good Morning Everyone 😊

@ImALittlePea I’m a user of MFP as I like to track meals/macros/calories and it’s useful to preload your meal plan for the week/month. However the 5 week weight predictor is bonkers! It’s been telling me I’ll be at goal in 5 weeks for what seems forever 😬

@ginsparkles i second the app that @Graphista recommends. If you’re into visuals it’s great! I set a goal for every lb lost and I got a fanfare on reaching it so quite motivating.

@Flowers111 We have all had those moments, it’s human. Try not to worry and today is a lovely clean slate 👍 PS have plenty of water 💧

@Echobelly Asparagus is a vegetable I haven’t mastered. I saw some yesterday and was tempted to try again but I tend to over cook it. How do you do yours?

@Puffalicious I think everyone loves a Ginger Nut 🍪. So very tasty and moreish 😋

@12weekstoloseweight Congratulations and we’ll done on your loss 👍👏

WOW - 1.5lbs lost again this week. I have been more active generally (but not that much more) and slept a bit better 🤷‍♀️Mind you they took a lot of blood yesterday so it might be that 😬

Enjoy your day!

SunshineCake · 11/05/2022 07:47

Hi @Graphista it is potentially womb cancer plus I may also have a problem with my kidneys. I am not stressing after the initial shock as tbh I had forgotten all about it with the situation with DD. I also tried to tell myself there is no point stressing as can't do anything about it and will worry when I have something to worry about.

re Dd they have said there is nothing they can do if she won't engage with them.

I also couldn't cope with varifocals, especially with walking down stairs so I have two pairs of glasses and it annoys me. I am overdue a trip to the opticians as definitely have something wrong but had no time with DD.

Thank you @ImALittlePea but I don't feel strong. There is no option but to keep going but I often feel like I am, or will, fall apart.

Nothing wrong with you @Flowers111, you are human!!

At least you had a good reason for breaking your fast @Puffalicious I broke mine because dh wanted something to eat, I said he was mean and he said well you are doing this stupid thing that isn't even working as you have gone up so I had a toasted tea cake when I wasn't even hungry.

Well done @12weekstoloseweight and @milkfromthesleepycow and @Benjispruce4

WOW same as yesterday but up on last WOW.

need to get my head in the game. Off to garage to get car fixed. Have a good day everyone and drink your water.

ginsparkles · 11/05/2022 08:08

Morning.

Wow is exactly as expected, up on last week but not dwelling just focussing on today.

Well done to @Benjispruce4 @12weekstoloseweight @milkfromthesleepycow and @TheRealHousewife on your losses.

Love as always to @SunshineCake thinking of you.

Today is quite frantic, I have an appointment at the bank to discuss my inheritance from Dad. Must not let my mood drop and the usual chocolate attack happen. Then off to have hair cut and coloured. In the mix I have to also get birthday presents for my boss and DD. And on top of that I have a telephone appointment with the doctor about DD who keeps getting spots in front of her eyes, feeling sick and faint anytime she takes any form of exercise. No idea what's happening there. But trying to improve her diet to see if that fixes it.

Hopefully all this busyness will mean I can stick within calories.
Lunch - grab and go so will find a low cal sandwich/salad/sushi
Dinner - lasagne.

Hope everyone has a great day, and hope the sun is shining where you are.... it's throwing it down here!!!

Flowers111 · 11/05/2022 08:35

Hi all - well done everyone.

Update here - still same weight give or take a few lbs from when I started 🙄🫣 need new scales I think.
However did a quick tape measurement and waist has gone from 44in to 37in !! Now that is possibly morning v. evening but still it's encouraging & I did feel it too.
Hips same, thighs same but I know it's muscle replacing fat.

Flowers111 · 11/05/2022 08:35

@SunshineCake I hope it's not too serious
@ginsparkles could it be anemia

ElderflowerTonic · 11/05/2022 08:40

No change on the scales for me but I wasn't expecting it. Will stick with calorie counting for the next week and see how things go.

8stone13 · 11/05/2022 08:57

@SanFranBear I did my PhD with the woman who is now the world expert on SOE! It was the subject of her doctorate & I met some of her interviewees, people who had been in the organisation undercover during the war in occupied countries. It was truly amazing sharing an office with my friend for years & hearing their stories first hand.

I'm involved with Bletchley Park. There's an amazing new exhibition, The Intelligence Factory. It's not to be missed!
