Not going to be fat and 50!

Every year I say I'm going to do it, but this year I'm determined that I have to lose it. I've got my 50th birthday in May and a once in a lifetime trip in October. I don't want to be fat for either.

I've ordered a treadmill. I like walking, but don't like going out before or after work when it's dark so I thought this would get me back into being more active. Eating wise I'm going to follow Fast800 for a boost at the beginning. I'm the kind of dieter that needs to see results quickly otherwise I'm in danger of giving up so I'm hoping this will give me a decent loss at the start and spur me on.

Anyone want to join me in an accountability thread?

@dudsville thank you. Yes it's trying to find that balance isn't it. Just got to go with it. It's a marathon not a sprint. But I'm 2lb from being 12 stone something instead of 13. So am motivated. But just need to be kind to myself a roll with it. She said eating the last piece of birthday cake 😀

Roominmyhouse · 09/03/2022 20:01

Hello all! Feel like I’ve been MIA on this thread. I’ve had a couple of weeks of real plateau but this morning a little bit more weight had shifted. So I’m down 9lbs so far this year. I’d hoped to be closer to a stone by now but I know consistency is the key so I must keep going as what I’m doing is working! Plus I’m not feeling deprived which means this is more likely to help me keep the changes long term.

dudsville · 09/03/2022 20:55

@oblomov, it's your bathe a Tolstoy reference?

dudsville · 09/03/2022 20:56

Name, not bathe!

frosties24 · 09/03/2022 21:02

Hi 👋 synchers. Welcome @Oblomov22
Well done @unicornsarereal72
@dudsville I can’t wait until scale starts with 11 too

frosties24 · 09/03/2022 21:06

Not forgetting hi to the OG who started the thread of course - how u doin @MrsMigginsCat? ☺️

dudsville · 12/03/2022 08:56

Urgh, I weighed this morning and have gained a couple of pounds. Had a rant about it with my OH. He's helped me problem solve some areas. My 16:8 had slipped because of evening wine, iknow that already and have pulled back. My treadmill had slipped because of boredom (it's in my office instead instead of in front of the tv) so we've come up with things I can watch on my phone. My eating habits: my portions started creeping up, and I started having treats more regularly, etc , so I can pull that back.

Going to try to have a more strict week ahead to realign myself as it had been working what I was doing a few weeks ago. How frustrating though! How's everyone else?

frosties24 · 12/03/2022 10:43

Same here @dudsville - I’ve been a lot less strict recently and so have avoided my Saturday weigh in today. Gotta get back into 16/8 and writing down everything I eat. Onwards and upwards 😬

shamoola · 12/03/2022 11:36

I've not posted much have been reading. What I find a worry is being able to maintain any weight loss because like a couple of people on here as soon as you take your eye of ball the pounds creep back on. So I just don't think a 'diet' can ever end. Which is a bit depressing as I'm bored of always thinking about food.

unicornsarereal72 · 12/03/2022 12:24

Good luck with the few changes planned. It is the small things. They soon add up.

@shamoola after a life time of dieting I know it needs to be a life style change. And break those bad habits. I've ate my emotions all my life so think it is always something I'm going to fight. Right now my mind set is if u want the cake I eat the cake. But can it wait until later. What exercise can I do to balance the cake etc. I don't know how long it will last for but right now my rule is to not be denied anything. I just have to justify it more to myself.

dudsville · 12/03/2022 20:55

Ah frosties, it's such a pain. And I agree with you shamola and unicornsaremostdefinitelyreal, it is a lifestyle change. I do sincerely believe the changes I've already made must surely pay off in the long run. How can they not when I was being an over eating sloth? But I was already aiming for a modest pace and am disappointed not to be further along. I'm crap at calorie counting but I'm considering biting the bullet for one week. I've started a list of things I like eating that I could eat daily for a week. I don't get bored of the same things and I know I can't count as I go along so it would be to be set. So far I've totted up 900 good quality filing and enjoyable calories. Looking for another 300 or may leave it spare to use as I feel like on the day. Is this a mad plan? It would be for starting Monday.

dudsville · 13/03/2022 11:42

I'm just tracking my thoughts here. I'm all set up to start actual dieting tomorrow and I'm actually really excited. I was thinking about it on my walk this morning and I've realised that having learned to do the 16:8 means I'm less anxious about this than I might have been in the past where hunger and a preoccupation with my next bite of food seemed overwhelming. I'm also leaving things much less to chance as I assume this is where my measurements and counting has gone awry (I'm bad with numbers), so I'm intending to have mostly the same thing daily this week and I've counted it all out.

My TDEE calculator says I need 2186 to maintain, so what I've come up with leaves me with a lot of room to add in something spontaneous in the day and remain under 1500-1600.

Miso packets at 21 calories a pop and I have one of these a day already but might up that to two or more. 2 boiled eggs at 310. I love 2 versions of merchant gourmet lentils and the packets come in at 292 or 327 a packet. I'm going to make yogurt pots with a half cup of plain greek yogurt and then I've counted calories for individual added ingredients, like how many of various nuts or fruit and seeds, and I've put that calculation by the cupboard so as I'm making up the pot I can count as I go along.

This all comes in at just under 1000, but I've learned I need to round up so I'm calling it 1000. I would fold in vegetables either by making the eggs or the lentils into a salad with raw veg and with salads I'd drizzle a teaspoon or less of olive oil at 40 calories, so that would easily bring in another 100.

This is all stuff I would normally eat and absolutely love. Wish me luck, or send a warning my way if you see a flaw in this plan!

frosties24 · 13/03/2022 22:20

@dudsville @unicornsarereal72 @shamoola I agree with you all, it’s a lifestyle change needed to keep it off. Getting into the habit of small changes takes a while to set in so sticking to it rigidly at the start helps me get into the groove. Hopefully once some of the habits start to stick it don’t need to b a “diet” forever. Good luck with the new plan @dudsville sounds good 👍🏻 ☺️

frosties24 · 13/03/2022 22:21

*won’t not don’t

dudsville · 14/03/2022 12:25

Well, I'm doing it. I'm both glad to be doing this but also a little apprehensive, which I wasn't expecting. I guess I'm expecting the first few days to be a little tough until I settle in with the new habits. So far I'm feeling not full but not hungry, which is what I'd got used to feeling after my window closes of an evening, but not something I'm used to feeling during the actual day. I'm not someone to go on a retreat but I find myself thinking of this as a retreat of sorts, something to be approached mindfully and slowly.

Sorry for the blow by blow account. I'm using this thread to help firm up my resolve!

frosties24 · 14/03/2022 12:55

I’ve been distracting myself with other things or in writing what I’ve eaten down to stop me eating more. Or having a decaf coffee or herbal tea. As others said above, the “diet“ is being really strict in order to get used to eating less and eating mindfully but in long run I’m hoping eating less becomes a habit. I started this towards end of January and despite a blip as it wasn’t priority for a bit, I am certainly more used to eating less and weighing up whether I really want something or just wanting to eat from boredom or something else. Keep going @dudsville you can do it ☺️

dudsville · 15/03/2022 09:27

Thanks @frosties24! I totted up a 500 calorie deficit yesterday according to my tdee, and I hope I'm erring on the side of overestimating, for example I didn't weigh my apple but it was small. I really wanted to eat more but not out of hunger or low energy or anything so it was doable. When we went to bed my OH brought himself snacks, that was a little tough but again it was manageable. Feels like there's just a few of us here at the moment, how's everyone else getting on?

Priddypuddycat · 15/03/2022 11:50

Hi everyone, just reading through the thread I'm 50 with a stone to lose , I can see a few of you are doing fast800 , I'm trying to find the best method to suit me . A lot of my social life revolves around eating out so think calorie counting will be better with maybe intermittent fasting

dudsville · 15/03/2022 12:22

Hi @Priddypuddycat! Welcome. This is very supportive, quite changeable thread, and a few of us have made adjustments as we go along. I started by adding a couple of different kinds of exercie (was a sloth previously!) and then added in the 16:8. I had some success via a few pounds lost and definete strength gained. I'm now trying calorie counting in my frustration at the slow pace and a bit of backsliding! I just came on to post the odd but pleasant experience I'm having at the moment. I ate 2 boiled eggs and an apple for breakfast at 10:30. I have a few back to back meetings now so I thought I would eat my yogurt pot (1/2 cup plain greek yogurt with some blueberries, cherries, a satsuma and a few nuts)... and I'm feeling full! This most certainly would no have been the case before the 16:8. I'm overjoyed!

unicornsarereal72 · 15/03/2022 16:38

@Priddypuddycat welcome. Hope you find something that works for you. I have been working on more mindful eating. And exercise. It's working so far. Although I've got some rather bruised ribs this week so exercise is on hold 🥲. I'm gutted as was getting better with both the swimming and running. But will reassess next week.

Hope everyone else is having a better week.

frosties24 · 15/03/2022 19:30

Welcome @Priddypuddycat 👋
Great @dudsville - I agree 16/8 does help with reducing appetite! I’m back on track past few days after a drift for a while.
Your poor ribs @unicornsarereal72

Roominmyhouse · 15/03/2022 21:58

Hope everyone is doing well!

My consistency plan is paying off. Just under 11lbs lost now. I’m having 1500 calories a day on average and not feeling deprived at all. Doing 1 45 min PT session a week, 2 hour long Bootcamp sessions and 45 mins pilates. Trying to walk it cycle on the days between but not worrying if I don’t. Got 11 weeks until my 40th now so hoping I can shift another 11lbs by then! 🤞🏻

dudsville · 16/03/2022 08:44

That's inspiring @Roominmyhouse! I've had to curtail exercise because of an injury, what happened to you @unicorns?

unicornsarereal72 · 16/03/2022 11:35

@dudsville my 15 year old adult size son torpedoed into me from the bottom of the pool whilst I was swimming.

Hope your injury heals quickly.

dudsville · 16/03/2022 18:00

Ooh, that sounds painful!
