Any Lardy fatties in their 50's want to join me in weight loss

Morning, I'm looking for some company in my quest to lose the lard.

I'm useless at dieting, I have managed to shift one stone since Christmas but I keep losing and gaining, rinse and repeat.

Anyone up for joining me.

PioneerWoman · 04/06/2021 11:32

Of course CandyLeBonBon, welcome. Not gaining at our age is a victory.

I am attempting Fast 800 as I want to lose a stone fast so there is a chance I fit in my old fat clothes, then I have another stone to lose to fit in my normal clothes, I am abandoning notions of fitting in my slim clothes for now. My mantra is 7 lbs at a time (smaller goals) or I get overwhelmed.

If you look over the thread I think there are lots of different approaches, from shakes to increasing exercise to eating more mindfully. Do whatever you think will work for you.

CandyLeBonBon · 04/06/2021 12:04

Thanks @PioneerWoman
The older I get the less I care fit myself - it's a bizarre form of self harm I think but I know I need to look after myself more. I'm just tired of looking after a everyone else, I don't give a shit about myself.

I'll look around the thread snd see if something resonates!

AnnaCharles888 · 04/06/2021 19:48

@SunscreenCentral
That's great to hear you plan your food out. Stick to that for a few days then you can adjust as you see fit. Routine is important.

And if you do find yourself in a position where you really, really, really, really want to eat something (eg maybe where everyone is tucking into ice cream or something and it's not on your plan) instead of telling yourself "I can't have that" which brings on feelings of resentment, try telling yourself "I can eat that - just not right now." Works a treat!

And great idea about the alcohol cut back too

AnnaCharles888 · 04/06/2021 19:52

@PioneerWoman I was worried my post was too long, but hope it did help.

Ref training the brain. I'm convinced it's 80% of the battle. When those urges to eat come (even when you know you're full) and you know it's just boredom (that was the big thing for me, to eat when bored) or anxiety or sadness or whatever its ALL about calming the mind drama.

When urges come (in case this helps everyone), instead of grinning and bearing it, using willpower or giving in, try just sitting with the feelings of desire. I used to get them sweep over me in waves. It felt quite uncontrollable. But if you sit still and know it is ONLY your brain sending these messages (not because your body needs fuel), they pass. And usually within about 60 seconds. It's harder to start with but do it enough and like anything you practice you get good at it.

Chelsea567 Has worked well so far.
It is calorie restrictive plus CBT.
I was sceptical but friend who is psychologist says it is very evidence based. For me has worked and 6kg down with another 6 to go!

HopelesslyOptimistic · 05/06/2021 07:17

My aim is 3Ib a week starting tomorrow. Is everyone cutting out alcohol?

ThinWomansBrain · 05/06/2021 15:51

Still eating healthily, not snacking (one evening I was hungry as I'd had a very light supper, so had lentil soup which was a bit carby - but better than biscuits/toast etc) - but after an excellent initial loss the first couple of days, my weight went up and has plateau'd for a couple of days. This is the normal pattern for me, but sooo frustrating Confused.

@Chelsea567 - I looked at noom and second nature, and went with second nature in the end - Nearing the end of the first week, and like it so far.
CBT based, and low carb (not that low, I've done more restrictive) rather than calories. Daily articles to read, an online coach and group chat (people starting on the same date, 30ish in the group, probably about 12-15 active participants). Very much aimed at changing habits than a quick fix.

@HopelesslyOptimistic
I haven't had any alcohol, but would probably have a glass of wine if I was eating out and wanted oneSmileWine

Hi - I dropped off the thread last week. Awful family drama. I think things have settled down a bit now 🤞 and I can try and get back on the bandwagon. I did weigh myself mid week and had put on 6lbs which was confusing and very demoralising.

New plan - daily weigh in, 20 mins on exercise bike - have set myself a 6 week challenge, daily dog walk - and lots of food planning, I fall down without a plan.

I'm so tired of avoiding having my photo taken and desperately trying to cover myself up. I'm constantly comparing myself to others and feeling negative- I need a win!

Makowolf71 · 07/06/2021 02:24

I turned fifty this past February and weigh just over four-hundred pounds; do not know what that is in stones, but I'm a huge fan of "Are You Being Served," and have the collector's box set, including "Are You Being Served Again" and the movie. I'd like to join your group.

RickOShay · 07/06/2021 09:44

Ok. Today is the day. Got a stinking headache. I’m doing this. Got some roasted vegetable soup for lunch.
Good luck everybody, keep strong.
I’ve unearthed a pair of jeans I really want to wear and I’m going to look at those every time I feel the call of crisps and bread.

ThinWomansBrain · 07/06/2021 14:23

2.4kg down in week 1 - weight is still plateau-ing though, sooo frustrating.
How is everyone else doing? Lots of PPs were aiming to weigh in on a Monday.

ThinWomansBrain · 07/06/2021 14:26

@Notonthestairs - sorry to hear about the dramas - good to hear things have settled down.

Well done on the planning - I'm rubbish at that, but trying really hard this time around.

PioneerWoman · 07/06/2021 14:41

RickOShay crisps and bread are my weakness too, that and huge portions.

ThinWomansBrain well done, that’s a fantastic loss in one week.

I have lost another 3 lbs (6 lbs since I started) and have gone into another figure bracket. Pleased and determined to have a strict week. I am going to eat buckets of veg, lots of salads, tuna, chicken and salmon for protein.

I would love to watch a diet / weight loss tv series to keep me focussed in the evenings. Any recommendations?

RickOShay · 07/06/2021 19:48

Well done Smile
That’s brilliant @PioneerWoman and @ThinWomansBrain
I did ok ish.
Did have 2 slices of whole meal bread with soup
And a bit of French bread with salad tonight
But I’ve kind of started
No crisps at least

mineallmine · 07/06/2021 19:55

Can I join in? Hope I'm not too late to the party. I'm 51 and have 3 stone+ to lose..I'm too scared to stand on the scales right now. I go to bed every night so cross with myself for eating crap. Just finished a takeaway right now. I've struggled for 20 years with weight but have liked it on since my mother died 3 years ago. I was watching Motherland recently and the horrible Amanda asked Ann if she was eating her feelings and I had a lightbulb moment. I definitely turn to chocolate and cake as a little treat when I'm upset or worried.

Anyway, tomorrow is a new day and I'm going to start again.

ThinWomansBrain · 07/06/2021 20:52

I do enjoy low-carbing - have just had a delicious plate of plaice and samphire in garlicy butter.

@PioneerWoman not a series, but there's a good documentary on iPlayer about ultra-processed food.
ultra-processed food documentary
I saw it when it screened, and watch random bits when I want to eat something and KNOW that I am absolutely not hungry.

ThinWomansBrain · 07/06/2021 20:55

@mineallmine - welcome!
Weigh yourself in the morning, you have to measure how much you lose!
It'll be an incentive to stick to eating healthily.

steppemum · 07/06/2021 21:04

Can I join? I have finally stopped putting on weight, but find it so hard and so boring to lose it.
I have stopped and started 16:8 since Christmas and gone from 110 kgs to 106. So about half a stone. Well it is a start.

Got up this morning and I am determined to do it this time. First goal - under 100kg.
Long term goal 80 kgs. That is about 3 and half stone Sad

I am basically not eating any snacks and only healthy food, snacking is my downfall (wfh) and having to cook for starpping hungry teens is a nightmare

steppemum · 07/06/2021 21:05

forgot to add, 54 and joints are creaking, needto lose weight to help my feet!

putthehamsterbackinitscage · 08/06/2021 12:07

So I did start yesterday after my week away - back still a problem but I stuck to my plan.

Weighed in at 150.4 lbs so realistically 2 stone to lose at nearly 52.

Going to do a couple of weeks of 3 day diet (it worked for me 25 years ago) then probably switch to 5:2 which has also worked more recently.

My downfall is DH no longer works away so I have more temptations to eat and drink too much - wren he worked away and childminders fed the kids their tea it was much easier to stick to a plan.

Cornishmaiden · 08/06/2021 13:40

Hello everyone, hope it is not too late to join. I have creaky knees and aching hips which have got so much worse since putting on this last stone. My clothing choice has become very limited and I look at myself in the mirror and see a fat, frumpy 55 year old with 2 chins.
I am going to calorie count and try to move more. I have even invested in a new step counter with the aim of working up from 5000 a day to help. I want to lose 3 stone but that seems like a mountain at the moment so I will go with 7 lbs at a time.
Good luck everyone Smile

Notonthestairs · 08/06/2021 16:20

Oh goodness yes the creaky knees! Mine are sore.

Stuck to a yogurt for breakfast, salad and left over roast vegetables from last night. Planning chicken salad for dinner.

Managed a dog walk, ignored the exercise bike Blush but I did mow the lawn.

nothernexposure · 08/06/2021 16:36

Can I join too? I'm 55, not quite 5.3 ft and 11.3 stone. So basically a barrel. Have half heartedly eating better but then snacking on rubbish so unsurprisingly my weight has just increased. Planning on eating a protein rich, lower carb diet and stopping the snacking. 5:2 has worked in the past but i can't face doing it again unless I really have to. Ideally want to loose 1.5 stones or get as near to 9 st as possible.

PioneerWoman · 08/06/2021 16:37

Empathising with creaky knees, achy joints and family dramas. I made the mistake of looking at my tummy in a full length mirror and have had a little cry, proper big fat folds. I have a great DH and my teenagers are good kids but boy do they pull you back and forth with their problems and last minute requests.

Just keep going everyone, remember why you are doing this.
