Losing up to a stone of baby weight

I'm a size 12 post baby but petite and feel frumpy. The weight gain has been my stomach and hips which I guess is to be expected. I am six months post partum but have never been on a diet in my life before and don't know how or where to start. Calorie count, more exercise? I want to get back down to a size 10

Hi, I’m in the same position! Five months postpartum and have just over a stone to lose. I’m also quite petite so a stone is a lot to me. I’m starting on Monday. Bought myself a diary today and I’m doing a big food shop tomorrow. I’m starting slowly so I don’t fall off the wagon. Next week I’m making 4 changes: (1)I’m increasing my daily walk from 3km to 5km. (2) I’m drinking 2 litres of water a day (3) I’m cutting down on sugary snacks ( biscuits &bars) (4) I’m having protein with each meal.
Hopefully that will get me off to a good start.

Hi @Jacky86 those all sound like great ideas.

I’m also writing down exactly what I eat everyday. I know there’s loads of apps to log food and track calories but I prefer writing things down. This will hopefully make me more mindful of what I’m eating when I see it all written down.

I think I'm going to use my fitness pal so it can calculate dor me.

I’m weighing myself Monday morning and officially starting then. Looking forward to getting stuck into it.

tigerbreadandtea · 14/05/2021 20:29

I'm terrified to weigh myself! It's ridiculous, I have grown and given birth to a beautiful baby and some weight gain is to be expected but I just feel fed up.

I’ve just started I second the water and use of something like my fitness pal, I found it made me much more aware of snacking that I didn’t realise I was doing eg one cracker for baby one for me and at the end of the day I think I’d been good and had no treats, Also things like oil for frying, condiments, tea , squash etc all have calories, seems daft but it makes a differenxe

tigerbreadandtea · 14/05/2021 20:58

@Sugarcube84 yeh I know what you mean. Other than walks with the pram I think I'm too sedentary too, having a baby in lockdown definitely hasn't helped - there is nowhere to go except outside and it's been a very very long winter.

I did a big food shop today in preparation. Plenty of lean meat like turkey sausages, chicken breasts and lean minced beef as well as lots of fruit and veg. I’ll spend a couple of hours tomorrow planning my meals for the week.

tigerbreadandtea · 16/05/2021 08:20

@Jacky86 @Sugarcube84 wondering if you'd like to check in here once a week for accountability and motivation

Please can I join in? I lost an incredible 20 pounds in a week after birth so currently at 73 kg. I am 2 weeks pp today. I want to get down to 60 kg by December which I think is doable if I make a plan and stick to it.

tigerbreadandtea · 16/05/2021 12:15

@Initiate at two weeks post partum you shouldn't be worrying about your weight!

OP posts:
Jacky86 · 16/05/2021 22:07

Yes I’d definitely like to join!

tigerbreadandtea · 16/05/2021 22:45

Weighing scales arriving tomorrow I am nervous.

Jacky86 · 16/05/2021 23:17

I’m nervous but also excited! I’ve my main meals planned for the week, just need to plan my snacks now as snacking is my downfall.

Initiate · 17/05/2021 08:46

Not worried at the moment but want to get a head start before summer! I don’t want to buy new clothes!!

BelgianWaffles · 17/05/2021 08:49

What worked for me when losing my baby weight was calorie counting and intermittent fasting (16:8 - I didn’t have breakfast). Lots of threads about it in the weight loss section. Good luck!

tigerbreadandtea · 17/05/2021 14:46

Just weighed myself - 11 stone 3lbs
Definitely the heaviest I've been

I’m in the same boat but a bit more than a stone...I got into bad habits with sugary snacks in pregnancy and now can’t stop 😢

Llamasally · 17/05/2021 20:19

@Jacky86 I like your idea of small steps each week. I’m thinking I could start with:

  • Treats (eg cake, biscuits, crisps, chocolate) only 1 item 2 days per week. Please no one say this isn’t that big a deal as it’s been several ‘treats’ Blush a day for months!
  • walk fast for an hour a day with the buggy/sling
  • 2 Chillies water bottles (plus anything else not instead of) drank before bedtime. Again, crap goal for most but I’m terrible for not drinking so need to keep it vaguely achievable I think

I really need to get back into pilates and yoga but when?!? With at least 1 small person permanently attached!

Jacky86 · 17/05/2021 20:26

I weighed myself today and I’m 10 stone . I’m exactly 5 foot so that makes me a 12-14 and I’m normally a size 10. None of my clothes fit and I don’t want to have to buy everything in a bigger size so that’s my incentive. My pre pregnancy weight was 8.10 but I’ll be happy to get to 9 stone. Hoping to be down at least 3 lbs next week. I normally go for a daily 3km walk in a park near my house so today I did it twice. I didn’t have any biscuits or bars. Just 3 good healthy meals, 3 healthy snacks and almost two litres of water. I’m still breastfeeding so def won’t be fasting.

Jacky86 · 22/05/2021 18:11

How is everyone getting on?

tigerbreadandtea · 22/05/2021 18:36

Went for lunch today with a friend and had one of those "I have nothing to wear" moments before I left. Thank god for Spanx leggings! I have lost two pounds since I last weighed myself, I'm eating smaller portions of dinner, cut out the biscuits and have upped my walking.

Jacky86 · 22/05/2021 20:28

Yes.. Spanx leggings are the best, I’m living in mine at the moment. I’ve lost 2lbs since Monday. I’m glad I weighed myself this morn as it has motivated me to stay on track for the rest of the weekend. I’ve also cut out biscuits and upped my walking.
