Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

TrinityWaves · 24/01/2021 15:55

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)
@Imworthit welcome Smile

I think the thing is that if you’re very overweight, many people assume that you’re a bit stupid. We’re not. We know how to do it, we’ve read all the stuff, we know what foods are best avoided etc etc etc. But knowing it and doing it are very different things - so if one way isn’t working for you, then try something else. It’s better than giving up and living at a weight that makes you unhappy x
Hi I know, wasn’t a comment on anyone else was just pissed at myself. Actually motivated me to stop doing dumb shit I know doesn’t work. I went out on a two hour walk & had a nice dinner. Definitely much more productive than starving myself.

Hi Imworthit. I'm not sure what you mean about being morally opposed to fad diets, why are you embarrassed to be on Cambridge plan?

I am on a VLCD diet too. I think they are considered a lot more acceptable now that more people understand them more, quite a lot of that is to do with Michael Mosley programmes and books around the 5:2 and 800 blood sugar diet.

Imworthit · 12/02/2021 20:55

@AlexaShutUp very inspirational, I need to re read that when I’m being silly

@Endogal Also 4.11,also trying for a baby. It’s hard to hide when your so short 😂

@ jitt3rbug yes I’ve been anorexic too that’s why I was so angry at myself for falling into dangerous habits for a few days but I’m back on track

I’ve been anorexic and for myself it’s not a wise route to go down.
HostessTrolley · 12/02/2021 21:16

@Imworthit - sorry, I wasn’t having a rant at you, it just frustrates me in general that some people seem to think that fat=stupid/lazy, it’s been one of those days! Sorry to hear about the anorexia, I gained a lot of weight supporting my daughter through it, it’s a very misunderstood illness Flowers She needed the weight we gained - I did not Blush

Has anyone got anything interesting happening at the weekend?

Thisseatisnotavailable · 12/02/2021 21:31

I'm sorry to hear that Imworthit. Does your Cambridge consultant know?

Imworthit · 12/02/2021 21:32

No it’s grand I was kind of talking to myself 😂😂😂 and believe me I know, we’ve all been there, with the ‘how do you know’ looks, it’s so annoying.

That smart scale sounds interesting.

My fella is working so Valentine’s Day dinner with my mum is the highlight.

Imworthit · 12/02/2021 21:34

Actually probably not, it’s just a fairly new friend so I’m sure she doesn’t really. Good point.
Imworthit · 12/02/2021 21:44

But the fact that I decided I was gonna hide it from my mum & sister definitely shows I was creeping into a bad headspace. As I said I’m glad I voiced what I was thinking and am back to an eat healthy/stay active/ healthy mind/healthy body mindset.....the weight will come off but I don’t need to be depressed while doing it. Thanks guys. 😁

FatCatThinCat · 13/02/2021 08:19

I weighed in today at 113.8 kg. That's a 0.7 kg loss from last week. I'm very happy with that as I thought I'd gain this week. I've struggled to eat properly because my sleep has been messed up. Bad sleep means bad food for me.

Imworthit · 13/02/2021 09:35

Well done 👍 I’ve lost 3.5lb since Wednesday

MyGazeboisLeaking · 13/02/2021 11:37

Brilliant to see the weight losses on here :-)

I'm excited for next Friday to see what my stats are.

I'm doing a lot more exercise and strength training, so I'm keen to see how that reflects on my muscle mass and visceral fat (horrible word, really conveys what it is EnvyEnvy .

Also had wine and tapas last night, and will have wine and indian takeaway tonight too, so I'm very happy to lose gradually as this keeps me going.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 14/02/2021 11:57

Lost 2lbs this week. I'm a little disappointed to be honest, but still it's going in the right direction. Maybe because I did very little exercise this week, normally I go out for a long walk everyday but with the cold and snow I've been hibernating a bit.

CaptainOmelette · 15/02/2021 05:38

Hi guys, would you mind if I join you? My bmi at present is 37.1, I’ve been trying to lose weight since Jan 1st and just worked out I’ve lost 6% of my weight already which I’m pleased with. I’m doing low-carb but also trying to get better at portion control/unhealthy “meals” as I’m an overeater. I lost 100lbs low carving 10 years ago but 3 pregnancies since and it all came back...I hadn’t curbed the overeating whatsoever. Baby steps as I learnt yesterday I can’t even have 90% chocolate in the house, but I feel my long-term willpower is steady finally. I’m in my 40s, I need to do this for my children. Today I’m rummaging as desperately need to do a shop tomorrow but...B - scrambled eggs & mushrooms, L - sardines & gherkins with cauli rice, D - corned beef, gravy & broccoli. No snacks, lots of fluids (also something I must work on).
I think you’re all doing great, trying is the bravest thing we can do.

TrinityWaves · 15/02/2021 21:54

Hello Captain, everyone is welcome to join, you're doing great!

Snacking is probably my biggest problem but maybe giving that up for Lent could work for me!

OP posts:
SchrodingersImmigrant · 15/02/2021 22:21

@TrinityWaves is it snacking as in constant or just 1 or 2 small things?
I have a time set for snacks. If I miss it no snack. It can only be then. It actually helped because I know it's there so I don't get twitchy at other times.

FlatEarthling · 16/02/2021 10:26

I'm still in the zone which is remarkable. I have levelled off weight wise though. I'm the same weight as I was on Friday. I would have hoped for at least one pound off by now. I really want an absolute minimum of 2lbs a week off, preferably 3.
I'm not interested in slow and steady wins the race.

I can cut back calories more although I'm not sure how accurate my calorie counting is as I'm only guessing at made from scratch stuff.
For example I made Quorn lasagne, so when I input my calories I just use a premade Quorn lasagne as an equivalent.

Despite being off work for 3 days I haven't done any extra exercise. As it was so icy until yesterday I hadn't even been for a walk. I've been using my days off to catch up on household jobs.

If I can lose 3lbs by the next weigh in day, Friday, I will have lost my first one stone. Which sounds good but in reality that will still make me over one stone heavier than I was in the summer.

queenofthelamas · 16/02/2021 19:24

Hi all, can I nervously join in...

BMI of 39/40 depending on the day! Last lockdown I lost 2 stone in about 4 months then went back to work and piled it all back on.

My goal is to loose 2 stone by may....

My problem is snacks. I love to snack, main meals I can take or leave but come night time all I want to do is eat and eat!

My other problem is motivation, I go for about a week then loose all motivation. Well I've had my pancake today and am ready to try again!

Any support would be amazing

TrinityWaves · 16/02/2021 23:04

SchrodingersImmigrant - in general my problem has always been snacking as I'm more of a grazer type eater, really my whole life but wasn't obese until 24, as a child I was slim. I've been snacking less overall since writing this thread though. Set times sound really good for discipline around snacks!

OP posts:
SchrodingersImmigrant · 16/02/2021 23:14

Good to hear the thread is helping!

I have the luck in putting on the weight inlast few years. Essentially what I am doing is returning to my natural eating before (or unnatural with timings😁)
O have lunch between 11:30 and 12 and dinner about 6:45- 7:15 so I reused my younghood thing where I greelw up. I pop a small snack in the middle. I usually have up to 250 cal sald for lunch so it's pretty light. Then as a snack fruit or yogurt and fruit between 3 nland 3:30. That stops me from being FAMISHEEEÉEED when making dinner so I don't get "hunger eyes".
If I miss the windows for any food I just habe to wakt to the other. So i eat in meetings with "sorry. Feeding time" (aaaand indentifiable lol).
Note that's eating start time, not must be finished in that window.

I do understand this wouldn't work for everyone. Just saying what helped me.

FlatEarthling · 18/02/2021 19:40

I've made an awful mistake...I made flapjacks with chocolate topping. I thought it was a lovely treat for the DC for half term.

I was doing so well. Despite the fact I haven't used my week off for exercise.

As a rough guess I'm over 2500 calories today. So extra strict from tomorrow for a few days.

TrinityWaves · 19/02/2021 20:25

I've STS this week - boo!

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 20/02/2021 01:07

Hello can I join please?
My BMI is 35.8.
Started beginning of Jan but really started from the 11/01 when I actually stuck to my diet.
I've lost a stone so far. I just am doing calorie counting and making smarter choices.

Need other people who are loosing weight to talk to please! Smile.

FatCatThinCat · 20/02/2021 09:05

114 kg today, that's a 0.2 kg gain. Depressing but I know why. 2 really bad sleep nights which means bad food the next day. I need to get to bed earlier next week to correct this.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 20/02/2021 09:05

It looks like mine is finally moving again. I changed my eating last 4 weeks, mainly because I couldn't be arsed to cook and unintentionally lowered my carbs quite a lot. Which resulted in a weight stall caused by digestive issues and having to buy laxatives so I go at least once a week (sorry for tmi!)🙄 I made sure this week to add some carbs to previous levels and voilà! I am normally around 150g of carb (#carbsforlife Blush) and went quite under 100, around 80 usually. I didn't think it could cause things like this. Maybe it's a coincidence 🤷🏻
My body is freaking weird!
