Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

TrinityWaves · 24/01/2021 15:55

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

I was 114.5 kg this morning so a 0.4 kg loss. A bit disappointing but still heading in the right direction. I was 140 kg at the beginning.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 06/02/2021 22:58

I forgot to come on here this morning. I had a 4lb loss this week, down now to a bmi of 36.7.

I did 10 mins with my weighted hula hoop this morning but then didn't do a workout today, but did instead spend 4 hours decluttering and moving around our living room.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend.

FlatEarthling · 07/02/2021 17:31

I'm struggling a bit today. I keep looking in the fridge for things to eat.

Low calorie stuff isn't very filling.

Thisseatisnotavailable · 07/02/2021 17:45

Hey FlatEarthling. How you doing? Are you hungry, or just bored? Maybe go for a bath, or find something to distract yourself with. You're doing so well, weekends are always harder.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/02/2021 17:54

I have these! What helps me with this is having only certain times i eat. Nothing in between. It helped me not looking in a fridge randomly because "tough luck, it ain't 3:30 bitch"😂

Maybe that can help? And some nice full fat stuff. I find full fat yogurt more filling than low fat even if i have less of it

FlatEarthling · 07/02/2021 18:56

Almost definitely hungry.

I think it's because I had breakfast it seems to wake up my appetite.

I had Quorn ham, cheese and olives thinking the strong flavours may help. I'm also trying to cut back on my Diet Coke habit but that's gone out of the window today.

FatCatThinCat · 07/02/2021 19:06

I'm going cold turkey with the diet coke. It's not easy. It feels like when I gave up smoking, just not quite so overwelming.

FlatEarthling · 08/02/2021 09:00

I cracked last night with an ice cream Mars Bar. The worst thing was I didn't enjoy it. They are nowhere near as nice as I remember.
But today is another day.
I'm still determined. This is week 2 of my willpower lasting.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 08/02/2021 09:05

I feel you. It's been days and I am still moody at maccies for their pretty not impressive kateu nuggets!
Totual waste of calories.

But you know 1 mars ice cream isn't that bad! It's actually good you hfad just that. Do you count calories or eat mindfully?

Thisseatisnotavailable · 08/02/2021 19:17

One ice-cream is not the end of the world, don't beat yourself up about it. Try and hold onto that feeling though of how disappointing it was after.

MummyShah369 · 09/02/2021 07:16

TrinityWaves · 11/02/2021 01:20

How is everyone doing?

OP posts:
SchrodingersImmigrant · 11/02/2021 08:57

Over the wobble, physical and mental. I hope the former, though it's still not perfect.
So loss came and I am in much better mood.

Hope everyone is doing ok!

FlatEarthling · 12/02/2021 06:05

Starting weight 252lbs

05/2/21. 243lbs
12/2/21. 240lbs

I'm ok. I'm having around 1500 calories so there is room to cut back if I have to. My motivation is quite high which is good.
I have a long work day today including several hours in the car which is very annoying but can't be put off. I'm taking fruit instead of crisps to snack on.
BUT I'm off over the next week so in theory I have 9 days I can exercise on within much restriction! Unheard of!

Anyone else have some numbers to share?

HostessTrolley · 12/02/2021 11:46

Hi all,

I’ve had a pretty rubbish week diet-wise with two birthdays in the house - and I was given three different bottles of gin for mine! Bonus! But sadly not on the scales Grin

SW 251lb/114.2kg BMI 43 (26/1/21)
Last Friday 244.4lb/111.1kg BMI 41.8
Today 243.8lb/110.8kg BMI 41.7

I guess any downward progress is good! I also got both of the fast800 recipe books for my birthday so I’m planning some different meals for the weekend which hopefully will help me get back on track. On the plus side I’ve kept my step count over 7,000 every day without fail so am going to try to keep it above 7,500 every day for the coming week.

Hope everyone is well x

empiricallyyours · 12/02/2021 13:52

Hi, I’ve added my story, just in case it can help any of you.

My original BMI, about three years ago was 43.5 (19st 10lbs and 5.7”). I got it down to 30, but hovered between 30 and 35 (about two stones) for a couple of years, just going around in circles with my diet. Binge eating, then dieting, only to stay within the same couple of stones, it became soul destroying.

I decided to break the cycle and started afresh on 1st Jan, with a BMI of 35.4 (16st 2lbs) and a new determination to get healthy and get finally get to a healthy BMI. I’m now at 30.5 (13st 12lbs) and would like to get to a BMI of 21.3 (middle of the healthy range) and 9st 10lbs.

So, I’m almost 6 stones lighter than when I started and I’ve finally realised a few things. The main one is that eating empty processed carbs, sugar and artificial sweeteners just make me hungrier and lead to craving crap more than before. I’m trying to eat healthy whole foods and I’ve managed it since 1st Jan. I’m running 30 mins a few mornings a week and walking 10k most days. I’m feeling strong and positive and that I will achieve it this time.

I’ve been in the same cycle of despair that most of you have or are experiencing and if I can give any advice from looking through the thread, and please don’t take it as a criticism, I understand how hard it is, but it would be to just stop with stuff like this until you’ve achieved your goals (and probably beyond, apart from on VERY special occasions).....

French bread pizza
Pie
Chips
Wotsits
Chocolate biscuit
Juice
Pepsi
Diet Coke
Chocolate
Bagel
Hot Cross Bun
White rice
Baked crisps
Malt loaf
Yorkshire Pudding
Ready meals
Pizza
Pasta
Granola
Gin
Panini
Cake
Ice cream

THIS IS ALL FOOD THAT WILL KEEP YOU FAT! This sort of food is for people who only have a stone or two to lose, not people like us who are seriously, morbidly obese.

I hope no one is offended, it’s just an observation, I’ve been in denial many times too. I’ve had to stop kidding myself that I can just have this or that and wake up to the fact that I am seriously overweight and I need to stop playing around with this thing and become the healthy, slim person I should be. There’s a reason 98% of diets fail long-term. I wish you all the absolute very best of luck with getting into the 2% that succeed.

Imworthit · 12/02/2021 15:41

Hi guys, I started my weight loss journey in early jan, was 200lb. Lost 8lb in the first two weeks and then my weight stuck.

So embarrassed to admit I’ve started the Cambridge diet. I don’t believe in fad diets & have gained and lost a similar amount of weight ‘the healthy way’ before. I just finding lockdown is zapping my motivation. Gyms, classes, pools closed, no job, nowhere nice to go when I finish my walks, no one to see me.

Anyway, just need a handhold. One the one hand I feel like I’m doing something I’m morally opposed to ‘fad dieting’, on the other I’m trying to convince myself that this is an ‘exception’. Just something to jumpstart me on the right path. I’m full of shit right 😂😂😂

Healthy eating has never been a problem for me. I love the good stuff. I just gave up last year. The exercise tho is more problematic... nowhere to go is doing my head in.

......if anyone wants to know I have extremely good advice on how to healthily drop from 40+bmi to a healthy weight....I’m just not listening to myself right now 😩

MyGazeboisLeaking · 12/02/2021 17:00

Hi all, hope it's okay to join this thread.

I've got a current BMI of 38, and have been up and down by a matter of stones for years.

I've lost around 4kg in 4 weeks by doing a low-card but not really too high fat diet. It really suits me and I eat & drink what I like on a Friday and Saturday evening.

I've got an exercise bike and I use that most days and do some walking and exercises like squats / 'push ups' (on knees) etc too.

I've just bought a Smart Scale and I think it will be a game changer for me.

Seeing that I'm 44% body fat, of which 20% is the dangerous 'around the organs' visceral stuff, has frightened me.

I've also got high blood pressure, which I kidded myself I didn't because I have a resting heart rate of 66 so I thought that was okay.

I'll look forward to reading the full thread but just wanted to say 'Hi' whilst I was motivated!

HostessTrolley · 12/02/2021 17:03

@Imworthit welcome Smile

I think the thing is that if you’re very overweight, many people assume that you’re a bit stupid. We’re not. We know how to do it, we’ve read all the stuff, we know what foods are best avoided etc etc etc. But knowing it and doing it are very different things - so if one way isn’t working for you, then try something else. It’s better than giving up and living at a weight that makes you unhappy x

MyGazeboisLeaking · 12/02/2021 18:22

Oops - just seen I'm not 40+ bmi - sorry!

FlatEarthling · 12/02/2021 18:48

@MyGazeboisLeaking Near enough is ok. You still have lots to lose and that's why we are in this thread.

Tell me more about your scales please.

I also have high BP and a resting Heart Rate of 68. It's so easy to ignore. I'm not on any meds so I'm hoping weight loss will do the trick.

MyGazeboisLeaking · 12/02/2021 19:40

Thank you @FlatEarthling . I do have a long way to go and I'm determined to do it slowly and surely.

The scales are really interesting and I'm enjoying learning about the numbers & values.

They were £20 from Amazon, and make me feel happier on the weeks that I haven't lost weight if my muscle mass has increased.
