Weight loss for those with a 40+ BMI

TrinityWaves · 24/01/2021 15:55

Anyone else at the start of their weight loss journey with a BMI over 40?

I thought starting this thread might make me more accountable.

I'm 5ft 5, weigh 265lbs, I'm in my early 30's.

I'd love to chat to others in a similar position, almost all my friends and extended family are slim! (My DH is also trying to loose weight, lower BMI than me though.)

DH has been looking at the stuff on hibiscus tea as he'd never heard of it either. It triggered his scientist brain. He tells me that the research also shows that it reduces cholesterol but to be aware that it also reduces the effectiveness of paracetamol.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 02/02/2021 20:22

It's used commonly in some places. We have very international cuboards here being from different cultures so we have some things people just normally don't use, I guess😁
As far as I know it's popular in Egypt for number of health benefits.

Good to know about Paracetamol thing!

FatCatThinCat · 02/02/2021 20:52

I banking on not needing the paracetamol if my blood pressure sorts itself out and the headaches go away.

TrinityWaves · 02/02/2021 22:30

Just checking in - I was 264.2 lb this morning, 2.4 lb off so far (I was 266.6 on Jan 1st).

Good job!

FlatEarthling · 03/02/2021 11:49

I'm now back to the weight I was before Christmas.
So the hard work starts now.

Do we want a regular group weigh in day?
So we all check in around the same time?

Or is that a bit too much?

At the moment I feel like my willpower is very strong. I hope it lasts.

Hi everyone,

Sorry haven’t had a chance to update - I’m still
Plodding along with WW and exercising everyday. I have bought a fitness step to spice it up a bit Grin. I’ve lost 4lbs so far, I’m happy with that. I would like to have a group weigh in day or similar as I think this will help us to stay on track. I normally weigh on a Wednesday but well can weigh anyway.
I am focussing this week on meeting all the goals everyday on my Apple Watch and drinking 2litres of water per day. Hoping this carries on working as I’m feeling so motivated at the minute and feel so much healthier exercising, and although it hasn’t been long I am feeling like I can do more each day!

HostessTrolley · 04/02/2021 09:39

I think a group weigh day is a great idea - preferably not a Monday Grin

SchrodingersImmigrant · 04/02/2021 09:46

Do weight day on the furthrest day away from alcohol🙈 personal experience 🙄

FatCatThinCat · 04/02/2021 09:50

I always weigh in on a Saturday morning so I can relax a bit over the weekend if I've had a good loss.

HostessTrolley · 04/02/2021 09:50

I had a bit of a disastrous diet day yesterday but it was to be expected as I was seeing my daughter. She’s 20 and is at uni in London, we’ve had a difficult few years as she developed anorexia at 16, and went down to a BMI under 13, was hospitalised for months etc - I gained a lot of weight during her recovery as she had to eat six times a day and couldn’t eat alone. She’s generally doing fine but dropped a fair amount of weight recently and the local gp in London are not offering any support as she’s not suicidal. She actively trying to gain the weight back and fight off a relapse but is finding it hard and just needs a bit of support and I suppose accountability, so her boyfriend and I each go up once a fortnight just to meet her for a walk in the park and lunch. I really enjoyed the huge roasted veg and cheese panini and the banana cake later, but it’s not exactly low carb Hmm

FlatEarthling · 04/02/2021 09:55

@HostessTrolley That sound so incredibly stressful. It's a mums instinct to feed her child.
I have a skinny teenager daughter and while she eats reasonably well at breakfast and dinner she will often try to skip lunch. I now wonder if she was doing this at school.

I suppose you could eat what you like when with her but when back home cut back the next day or two so it averages out?

HostessTrolley · 04/02/2021 10:04

Anorexia is a nightmare - we didn’t see it coming at all, and there were times when I genuinely thought she would die - I was scared to go in her room in the mornings if I hadn’t heard her moving around first. She’s fought like a warrior to get where she is, but just started eating on autopilot rather than paying attention as she was busy with her course, so the weight started to slip. Lol if I eat on ‘autopilot’ it goes the opposite way...

I’m doing fast 800, so I just had a pile of steamed veg last night then back on it today, if I try to go lower I know I won’t manage it, so I’m happy to just draw a line under yesterday and get on with it.

TrinityWaves · 04/02/2021 20:45

I personally think Fridays are best for 'weigh day' as it's away from the weekend and before any Friday eve-Sunday treats!

HostessTrolley - that must be such a worry for you, I hope your daughter continues not to relapse.

OP posts:
HostessTrolley · 04/02/2021 21:34

I don’t mind what day - just preferably not a Monday WineCakeGrin

FlatEarthling · 04/02/2021 21:53

As it's @TrinityWaves thread, let's all weigh on Fridays.
If your normal weigh in day is different you can always weigh twice.

If anyone new wants to join in then it might be useful so they can keep up to date.

I've had another good day for eating but no exercise. I'm still motivated which is great.
I have half term off soon, which gives me 9 days in a row to exercise my socks off.
But I know ' you can't outrun a bad diet'

@SchrodingersImmigrant I'm now on my second box of hibiscus tea!

claracluck1978 · 05/02/2021 11:31

Is it too late to join this thread or can I jump on board?

I'm 42 with a BMI of 45. I've lost and put on 5 stone in the past 4 years but I'm keen to get myself sorted in 2021!

HostessTrolley · 05/02/2021 12:49

Welcome @claracluck1978 :)

Ok if we’re going by Fridays...

SW 251lb/114.2kg BMI 43 (26/1/21)
Today 244.4lb/111.1kg BMI 41.8

So that’s almost half a stone in ten days which I’m happy about, especially with Aunt Flo in the house

It’s sunny but cold here and I’m not getting a lot done, so I’m going to pack it up (I’m self employed and business is slow anyway...) and get out with the dogs

claracluck1978 · 05/02/2021 13:03

Thanks. I've weighed myself today and will then keep an eye on Fridays for weigh ins.

FatCatThinCat · 05/02/2021 13:25

Sorry but I really can't add in an extra weigh in. One of my biggest battles is staying off the scales. When I first started attending the eating disorders clinic I used to weigh myself half a dozen times every time I went in the bathroom. It's still a fight I have every day. I hope I can still be part of this thread if I weigh in on a Saturday morning.

Well done @HostessTrolley half a stone in 10 days if bloody brilliant.

FatCatThinCat · 05/02/2021 14:38

I'm having my first cup of hibiscus tea ever and wow, it's really nice. I'm not usually a tea drinker as I find them all a bit meh, but this is lovely. Probably helped that I bought it loose from a specialist tea shop rather than teabags from the supermarket.

JakeChambers · 05/02/2021 16:32

I'm similar @FatCatThinCat. If I start weighing myself more than once a week, I get obsessive about it and get into a really self-destructive cycle if I haven't lost. My weigh day is Thursday, and I might switch in a few weeks if I feel up to it, but I'm sure no one will mind those of us who don't do Fridays joining in with the chat. It's just a great supporting mechanism for those who can.

FlatEarthling · 05/02/2021 17:11

For @JakeChambers and @FatCatThinCat and anyone else who needs a different day just post your weight on a Friday. It doesn't matter when you actually got on the scales, the difference from week to week is the thing we need - in a downwards direction preferably.

FlatEarthling · 05/02/2021 17:15

Starting weight 252lbs

5/2/21. 243lbs

I like weighing in pounds as it doesn't sound anywhere near as bad as 18 stones!

TrinityWaves · 05/02/2021 18:14

I was 263.4 lbs this morning (-3.2 total)
