A weight loss thread with no boring diet info

Hi all
I really need to lose a total of about 4 stone.

I'm not keen on the usual weight loss type chats with methods and foods etc discussed in detail.

So I was trying to think how it could be more interesting.

This might be a crap idea but I know I do better when I have interesting things to do. Today I've done my workout, some drawing and keyboard practice. I've also read a couple of chapters of Women Who Kill (!) and watched The Crown, I'm on Season 2.

It was those things that made snacking on a boiled egg less of a shock 😂

So I was thinking, what about a support thread where we don't talk about the details of our methods, but just check in for support, and tell each other something interesting we've done that day, even just a film we've watched.

Is it a bonkers idea?

Hello, did you call? Smile

When you say “move from C to F”, do you mean single notes, or the chords of C to F? I’m not a piano teacher, so maybe someone else will have a better tip, but when moving from chord to chord it helps me to think in shapes that fit the scale, so eg, if I am going from C, E and G in the left hand to C, F and A I would keep my little finger on C, swap the middle finger E for finger 2 on F and step the thumb up from G to A. Does that make sense?

If you’re talking about jumping up from CEG to FAC, then that comes with practise, you will get better at looking away from the keys and having your hand ready in the right shape as your muscle memory improves.

I am sticking my masking tape on for my decorating. It’s making me quite sweaty so I reckon that’s exercise.

My small habit changes are to drink water much more often, and move for half an hour a day.

AcornAutumn · 31/12/2020 11:47

Gwen thank you for hearing my call!

on my app it's described as the C scale to the F scale.

So if the music goes rapidly from say, middle C to B4, I can't move to the right position quickly and then end up playing painful nonsense.

I'm sure an app is not the best way to learn but I thought it would be good to try that anyway before forking out for lessons.

I can imagine it's practice but at the moment I'm at the stage where I can't imagine switching over smoothly in a beat. Hopefully it will happen.

The only exercises seem to be a scale or a switch which gives you more time to do it.

Decorating is definitely exercise, really hard work! I hope it goes well.

Afternoon all. We have a piano 8n the dining room and I’ve been tempted to try to learn using an app. It doesn’t get used very much now the DC are older.

I’ve been baking bakewell tart today - a family favourite, so will probably all be eaten before tomorrow.

I’m going to go with DH to walk the dog in a few minutes, he’s just putting his long johns on. Still sexy after 30 years together 😀

GwendolineWindowlene · 31/12/2020 14:33

Ah, painful nonsense is par for the course I’m afraid (and jazz). What you described there is a big leap, at some point your hand/eye coordination will catch up. Playing music from the page is a bit like reading, somehow your eye learns to see ahead.
So if you are reading, ‘“Bloody hell”, he muttered’, somehow your eye gets to muttered in advance and you know the tone of what’s going on. When you’re playing this will eventually happen, and your brain somehow prepares you for what’s coming.

Enough decorating for me for one day. I’ve learned that either you should take a door handle off or use masking tape. Just winging it and hoping for the best doesn’t give a great result.

On the plus side, I’m only just getting round to lunch.Grin

GwendolineWindowlene · 31/12/2020 14:34

X-posted with Ginnie. Bakewell tart and a gentleman in long johns? You’re living your best life, as I believe the young people say.

AcornAutumn · 31/12/2020 14:50

Gwen thank you, that makes sense

Ginnie that made me lol about the long johns.

Please join me and learn via app!

I am gearing up to do my workout...

@AcornAutumn I admire you with your workouts.

I love lifting weights at the gym. It's something that's so beneficial for my mental well-being as well as my physical health. We're in tier 4 so my gym has shut again.

I have some adjustable dumbbells at home but just cannot get in the mindset for them. I hate being interrupted by my husband or children.

I've done another walk today, which felt good.

AcornAutumn · 31/12/2020 17:45

Paint oh I would love some adjustable dumbbells but they are so expensive! Also I can't lift that heavy. I'm not sure how I would walk home with them!

I live alone and I can't imagine I would take well to being interrupted. Are they really not okay to leave you to it for an hour? They could just pretend you are not home!

@AcornAutumn sadly just the knowledge that my family are in the house seems to affect the wonderful headspace/switch off I get from working out at the gym.

But perhaps I need to woman-up in 2021 and try to push past it.

MrsBobDylan · 31/12/2020 21:33

Hey all, am joining as I have never managed a diet in my life and until today, avoided weigh scales like the plague!

I need to loose nearly 2 stone and get a lot fitter. It is really important for me to be happy with myself, enjoy choosing clothes, make up etc and feel physically confident. The minute I start to dislike my body or loathe myself I will stuff my face.

I also have to pretend I am not dieting or else my inner anarchist takes over Grin

I totally understand this, hence why I wanted a thread that wasn't full of boring diet stuff.

Paint that's the way I guess. Use your lovely adjustable dumbbells for me! 😂

Happy New Year! Hope heads are not too sore this morning.

Happy New Year! We had a very lovely Chinese takeaway last night which DH has to queue for a long time to get!

Saw some guidance from the NHS this morning on weight loss 'Second Nature' I think it is called and it talks about avoiding restrictive diets, eating mindfully etc. It appealed to me a lot.

I want swimming pools to open because I enjoy bobbing about in the water and using the showers afterwards which are nicer than my own shower which just pathetically dribbles water Grin

Today I am re-webbing my sofa (I do upholstery) so it is lovely and comfy for all the lounging about I will do. Yesterday I made myself a new cushion. I sew for other people all year and I am taking this holiday to make nice things for me.

Dontsayyouloveme · 01/01/2021 11:48

So I don’t have a particular amount of weight to lose, I don’t weigh myself! But.. I need to get rid of my tummy which, as a previous poster has said, in Peri-menopause is hard going, even more so now the gyms are closed. I bought a cross-trainer, a rickety one at that, which is in my garage 🥶, and I go on that for 30 mins every day! It’s soooo hardcore compared to the fancy one at the gym 😩! I hate walking but I’m kinda determined to get out fir a good walk at the weekends too, more so when I have my 9 year old DS as he needs a lot of exercise to burn off some energy!

I’ll be back on the wagon as soon as this small airline bottle of fizz has been drunk, and the xmas treats will be limited to one a day! I started all this in earnest in august last year because working from home means I have more time to do it so couldn’t let the opportunity pass! I have seen a small reduction in the belly and it’s enough to keep me motivated.

I must dig out my weights which I think are in the garage somewhere and I must uSE the ankle/wrist weights , I don’t want a flabby arse!! Lol!

So today will consist of a 2 hr walk!

My DS is off to his dads later and there’s sod all on tv to watch but I may start The Handmaids Tale! It’s in my list of progs to watch! I may also get these Xmas decs down and out away, get some space back!! Oh, need to prep also for my menopause clinic appt on Monday!

God don’t half witter on! 🙄🥱

Have a great day ladies. Look forward to reading all your posts 🤗

AcornAutumn · 01/01/2021 11:52

Bob a great hobby to have.

Dont I admire your hardiness going for a 2 hour walk in this cold!

I have Netflix and Amazon Prime and there is loads to watch, might be worth a try?

I would like to join you all! I've managed to put on just over a stone since summer 2019 - bad snacking habits have been re-emerging and the wine... oh, the wine Shock

I've been walking loads the last 2 weeks and I'm just about to do Day 6 ( an hour and a half cardio session Confused) of a '7 Day Slay' from Cardio Party Mash Up on YouTube. Weighed myself this morning and I'm 4 lb heavier than I was in November.

Lockdown doesn't help - stuffed in the house with DH and two teenagers, the food prep is endless.

Good luck to all x

Dontsayyouloveme · 01/01/2021 12:04

AcornAutumn

Yeah I’ve have Netflix and you’ve just reminded me I have Amazon prime too - keep meaning to watch Parasite!! Thanks for the nudge!

The cross trainer was £40! I go into the garage in my gym gear and dressing gown on! Come out puce and sweating, with my dressing gown on, I feel like a boxer coming out of the ring!!! 🤣😂🤣😂

redfernsydney · 01/01/2021 12:05

Happy new year all! no sore head here as only one glass mulled wine yesterday. did a jessica smith workout with light weights.

I purchased a copy go HFW "Eat better forever " I don't want to "diet" just improve my eating habits.

@MrsBobDylan I want swimming pools to open too..haven't been for so long and I do really love swimming !

GwendolineWindowlene · 01/01/2021 12:16

Hello slender minxes everywhere!

Bob, is upholstery your job? I planned to do an evening course in it and didn’t get round to it. (I’ve also thought being a potter, a gardener and a ceramic restorer are all excellent jobs to just swan into in my 50s, I’m not very realistic about these thingsGrin.)

8k walk for me this morning. Legs aching and a race like a beetroot but feeling good for it.

AcornAutumn · 01/01/2021 13:42

I'd kill to have a garage!

Exercising in a small flat can be a challenge. Actually, just living in it is a challenge...

I wasn't going to work out today but actually I will do an easy Jessica Smith one.

Cross trainer and rower were my favourite things at the gym

But the only gyms in a decent price range are horrible, loud music so loud you can hear it through your own, lots of blokes grunting.

@Dontsayyouloveme The Handmaid's Tale is incredible. Hope you enjoy it.
I don't weigh myself either but am looking to feel better in my clothes.
