Anyone need to lose a stone or less and needs motivation?

Flippetydip · 18/05/2020 12:15

Not that I can provide the motivation but hey ho, I thought perhaps if there were more of us it might help!

I'm currently 10 stone 12 and 5 foot 7. My fighting weight is 10 stone and I would like to get back down to this.

Lockdown has seen me put on at least half a stone. A bad back has seen me stop running and lack of school runs means a distinct deduction in time on my feet.

Anyone else in the same boat?

Wow, @Indecisivelurcher... I did that HAMWI calculation and it told me that my ideal weight is 7st 7! And then if I subtract 10%,as it says to do if you have a small frame (which I do), then it goes down to just over 7st! That's insane - I'm currently 8st 4 and my target is 8st... I really think I'd look too skinny (gross, actually) if I was much less than that.

I really do need to look into maintenance calories as I'm getting close to my target. I'm guessing it'll be a case of monitoring and making adjustments if I start to creep up. I think I'll keep going with not having breakfast (basically 16:8) and I might do one or two fast days a week to help stay on top of it. I'm also going to start exercising properly. Honestly, I am Grin. I really need to actually as I'm not looking good naked yet Grin.

Also, congrats @BorsetshireBlueBalls on your loss - that's amazing!

Indecisivelurcher · 02/08/2020 10:41

@clevername at least its not just me then!!

Chesneyhawkes1 · 02/08/2020 11:46

The HAMWI thing actually works out as pretty much exactly what I like to weigh. But what my husband says I'm too skinny at!

Anyway I've lost pretty much every day this week. One day I stayed the same. Since I've cut my carbs right back 8 days ago I'm on a roll!

3kg off target weight now. The end is in sight 😊

BorsetshireBlueBalls · 02/08/2020 14:46

That link has lots of good stuff in it, Lurcher. My ideal weight, according to HAMWI, would be 57kg, so I'm a kilo or thereabouts off my ideal.

I seem to have spent my whole life being a bit over my ideal, though! yet, annoyingly, that methodology does seem to produce the right target weight for me. So I will press on.

I have enjoyed this thread, it's been really encouraging. I've been noting km walked and workouts done in my diary as well. I think it's helped trying to make permanent shifts towards healthy habits.

Indecisivelurcher · 02/08/2020 15:34

Slightly concerned that if others think the Hamwi calculation isn't way off, perhaps it's not so way off for me after all 😑😑😑 I think I'd be far too thin personally. I'm 5'4 and a size 10 at 9st 5, which I'm happy at if I can keep it now, so to try to go to 8st 8 just seems mad!

Indecisivelurcher · 02/08/2020 15:43

Interestingly, although I'm alright with the scales I still feel a bit flabby. Which I wasnt expecting. Obviously just different at this weight post kids. Hopefully continuing pilates, cycling, newly reintroduced running, and getting back to the pool when it opens, will all add a bit of muscle. Just need to be careful not to do my back again! Anyhow, I'll stop chatting to myself on the Internet... 😂

Chesneyhawkes1 · 02/08/2020 18:55

@Indecisivelurcher it depends a lot on build and bone structure I think. I've got pathetic wrists and ankles. And I just don't carry weight well at all.

I'm a smidge over 5ft 3". My goal weight on MFP is 8 stone. But I like being 7st 10lb.

I know people my height who weigh more but look so much better.

My husband likes me as I am now 😂

PowerslidePanda · 05/08/2020 08:34

Hiya - it's been a while since I last posted. Dejected about lack of progress - barely anything in the past 3 weeks. I wonder if my body has recognised that it's only getting around 1300 calories a day and has adjusted what it's burning to that. So I'm eating at maintenance calories for a week in the hopes of "resetting". When I get back to it, I'm going to make a more concerted effort to stick to 16:8, but also eat at maintenance at the weekends, so my calorie intake is more variable. Who knows whether it'll work though! Also, eating at maintenance when my body is expecting less, I assume I'm going to gain a bit until my metabolism has re-adjusted Sad

On the ideal weight thing, the TDEE calculator I use happens to display a bunch of them and uses them to give you a range for ideal weight, rather than an individual number. Hamwi is one of the things it considers, but it's right at the bottom of the range. Link, if anyone wants to try it for their own height:

Lurkingforawhile · 07/08/2020 11:01

Hi all. Pleased to say I seem to have managed to actually keep that 2lb off now. I think hot weather helps! I've found its having lighter evening meals that works for me - not all calories are equal Confused

Indecisivelurcher · 07/08/2020 12:18

@powerslidepanda sorry you've hit a stuck patch. Even if the weight hasn't moved I'm sure you'll be healthier for it, cholesterol and blood sugars don't show on the scales! One idea, have you tried changing up the timing of your Cals? What about having your main meal at lunch time?

Indecisivelurcher · 07/08/2020 12:26

Thanks for the link, I'll have a better look later, but it puts my ideal weight at 9st 2 on the outside which I think i can achieve but is lighter than I thought I was aiming for. It gives me 1289 Cals as maintenance which is again lower than mfp, also lower than the maths I did the other day. The info on carbs and protein could also be useful. I struggle to hit the protein % on mfp.

GreyBudgie · 07/08/2020 12:35

@PowerslidePanda Thanks for the link you posted. Try Lurchers suggestions, you are so close to your goal, you don't have much to loose, so it won't fall off in 2 days.

@Indecisivelurcher Congratulations on keeping the 2 lbs off. The maintenance calories you calculated look really low, what activity level did you put in?

Indecisivelurcher · 07/08/2020 12:41

I put light exercise. I wasn't sure which was right. I'm sedentary 3 days a week at the desk, pottering after the kids 4 days, do basic physio 4 days a week, pilates once, a bike ride or run once or twice, and walk the dog most days but often at child pace. I'll have a better look later in case I've done something wrong.

Makemytea · 07/08/2020 12:42

Can I join? I am mid 50’s , 5’5 and weigh 11stone. Really would love to lose a stone. Snacking is my downfall!

GreyBudgie · 07/08/2020 12:46

OK Lurcher. I'm no expert, but I'm your circumstances I wouldn't go lower than 1400 to allow sufficient calories to hit the protein target.

Indecisivelurcher · 07/08/2020 14:11

Welcome aboard @makemytea, what are we having? 😉

GreyBudgie · 07/08/2020 14:17

@Makemytea Hot and strong, no sugar thanks 😁 Welcome!

Do you have a plan to achieve your goal?

Makemytea · 07/08/2020 14:24

I like my tea strong with skimmed milk thanks! Unfortunately I also love chocolate and cakes. I have always been slim until the menopause hit me, I am now eating like a starved animal! I am going to try eating three meals a day and snack on fruit. Boring but necessary.

Indecisivelurcher · 07/08/2020 14:28

Right I got home and re-did the TDEE calculation correctly, now got 1757cals maintenance, based on light exercise. I would defo pile on the pounds with that!!! I don't know my body fat percentage so perhaps that would improve the results. But @powerslidepanda it might be worth you being a bit wary of its accuracy... The biggest of the ideal weight calculations is 9st 3.. I might give that a go - it sounds OK rather than 8st 8 Hamwi! Currently 9st 5 which I'm pleased to be back to, but I do feel like I could lose a couple more lb. OR better yet tone up more, but I'd struggle to do more exercise than I am around #life. Ta for the link panda, always like to science it up.

GreyBudgie · 07/08/2020 14:33

@Makemytea You'll do it! I'm 57 & went through menopause about 3 years ago.

If you are having overheating problems, then losing a layer of fat insulation really helps. I focussed on walking for stress relief and weight training to combat age related muscle mass losses and bone density loss.

Good luck.

Makemytea · 07/08/2020 14:44

Thank you GreyBudgie. I do a lot of walking but I think I will have to try some low impact weight training. I also used to swim regularly and I have noticed I am suffering with more aches and pains since the pools have closed.

Lurkingforawhile · 07/08/2020 14:57

@Makemytea I've really been missing swimming. Thrilled to be able to go back two weeks ago when our local pool opened up. Fingers crossed you'll be able to do the same soon. Such a good form of exercise for my lungs, arms and joints!

PowerslidePanda · 07/08/2020 20:56

Thanks all! Good points about progress being slower towards the end and also being healthier - a good reminder that that was also part of my motivation for this! Great idea about having my main meal at lunch time, but sadly not practical at the moment - I'm too busy dealing with little ones at that time of day and need something I can grab quickly when I get a quiet 5 minutes. But it might become an option after my maternity leave.

Yeah - I'm taking the TDEE amount as just a rough estimate! At some point, I need to try and figure out just how accurate my Fitbit is too (i.e. to maintain my weight, I'll need to consume X calories fewer than my Fitbit thinks I'm burning). It's excellent that you're only a couple of pounds away from the top of the ideal weight range already!

Welcome, @Makemytea!

clevername · 08/08/2020 19:17

Hi everyone. I love checking back into this thread to see how everyone is doing.

I've come to accept that I'm doing this bizarre weight loss dance of 'two steps forward, one step back' so that I make progress and then seem to gain a bit but then make a bit more progress but then go back a bit. So, a couple of weeks ago I kept going back to 8st 6 (having been lower) and now I keep going back to 8st 5(having been lower). Anyway, I'm feeling good because I'm really getting there. I started this whole thing at 9st 3 and I AM SO CLOSE TO OFFICIALLY LOSING A STONE!

Still aiming for 8st as my target but I feel so much better already.
