Just that really. How the fuck did I get this big! I've always been on the chubby side, but at 5"9 I pulled it down off.

Fuck. Where do I even start

Well done 🎉🎉

It’s a journey. And the best journeys are those undertaken with love and spirit. Even when they’re sad or difficult at times. It sounds like you’ve had a very stressful year OP. Sometimes you have to give yourself credit for getting through them, and hope you have more energy now to cope in different ways. Thinking of and doing some things that make you happy can also be helpful.

I think it also requires a sense of time and space. A year is a good time frame for change, perhaps broken up into a few more manageable times. Eg. New year to Easter. Easter to summer. Summer to Xmas.

I don’t go to MN weighloss chat often as the “lose 1 stone in a month” ra-ra doesn’t work for me, especially at my advanced age Grin. There is also no point in me losing loads of weight and putting it back on again. I think it’s best to find a weight that works for you, whether it’s 10 st, 12 st or 14 St, where you feel most healthy and happy.

Finally, on a practical note, I would recommend WW online. The “app” is really amazing. So are the recipes. It includes all the food groups, and it’s very simple. I speak as a computer phobe.

Good luck to all in 2020.

Hi everyone would I be able to join the thread please Smile I'm 5'10 and weighed 21 stone at the last weigh in just after Christmas Sad

I've been eating healthy for about a week and feel much better already but don't know how much I've lost as have got rid of the scales!

I'm a yoyo dieter and have been up and down loads of times, need to really keep it off this time though as have a 1 year old who I need to run around after!

I feel happy anywhere from 13-15 stone so not sure what my goal is yet.. I know that sounds heavy still but I'm very broad, even at this size i still have visible collar bones!

Good luck to all of us Smile

Oh ... and train of thought here ... I think hope is important too. Despondency can be an understandable reaction, perhaps especially for sensitive types (?). But hope is really important to go forward x

NextChapterOne · 10/01/2020 13:37

I don’t know my ideal weight either Ruby. I have a ball park figure that’s all. I’ll suppose I’ll know when I get there and that takes a bit of time. Meanwhile ... life to be lived ... 🙂😀

Greysparkles · 10/01/2020 14:18

Thank you @ringletsandtwiglets and @DobbyLovesSocks it's a step in the right direction! And well done to you guys as well.

nextchapter I'm trying to see it as a journey too, and not a race to the end goal. Which will inevitably end in tears.

I'm trying to make more time for myself atm, just to be me, be with friends and my family and feel happy. Not constantly worried and feeling on edge all the time trying to do to much all at once, not just in weight loss but just life. I put far too much on myself.

Went out for breakfast this morning with DH, first time in ages we've managed to spend a bit of time together. It was lovely, whilst he demolished the biggest breakfast the cafe had to offer I had an omelette 😊

I think we are all guilty of putting pressure on ourselves. I've kept the snack demons at baby by making a quilt. So pleased with it so far but now for the tricky part of putting all the pieces together and sewing it

DobbyLovesSocks · 10/01/2020 14:50

Baby - bay

DeeCeeCherry · 10/01/2020 15:12

I did low-carb. The only thing that makes weight drop off me, and allows me to eat enough to satisfy me. Appetite is my problem and I find low-carb cuts my appetite and snacks crave.

I have a dress I really like, every so often Id take it out of the wardrobe and try it on --squeeze myself into it- . Big belly, rolls of back fat but I was determined to get back into it.

Sadly Im quite lazy but I do have a mini-trampoline and dumbbells at home that I use whilst listening to music, as I know I won't ever get round to going to the gym, despite good intentions.

I think we tend to find what works for us best in the end, once we've reached the stage of 'No more - Im going to shift this weight once and for all'. I had to find something that fit in with my personality and lifestyle, and be realistic about it.

Good luck.

RooKangaroo · 10/01/2020 19:06

Well done OP!

I'm a similar weight and I wanted to ask people about Couch to 5k.

I'm really interested in starting this, but wondered if I'm just going to bugger my knees at this weight. Is it ok, or would it be better to do it once a couple of stone have come off?

ringletsandtwiglets · 10/01/2020 19:53

@RooKangaroo, I’m only on the second week, and only running around the ground floor at home because I can’t face running in public yet. It’s three times a week with rest days between, so I’ve not found it too tough on my knees yet. Someone said on another thread that you should think about proper running shoes by around week 6ish.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 10/01/2020 20:39

Roo I did C25K twice on my weight loss journey. At the start (19 stone) I just did gentle walking vs as fast as I could walking. Once I'd lost 5 stone ish, I did it again with jogging.

I used Strava to track my walks/runs. At first my walking pace was about 12.5min/km and fast was 10min/km.

Now, I walk at 10 mins/km as my normal, day to day speed. And I run at about 8min/km.

I am going to start it again tomorrow morning - I have a chronic illness which flared up and had 6 months of pain and had to stop running.

LittleBananas · 10/01/2020 21:06

Weight loss is 80-90% diet.

Exercise has minimal impact on weight.

"Exercise" is to meant to make you feel good and get healthier and enjoy life! Its not meant to be a mouse "treadmill" to get thin.

As a "strategy" it is not only fallacious, but also a waste of very precious time and energy, and the road to madness possibly ... Sad.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 10/01/2020 21:31

Absolutely Little. It's good for fitness but not essential for weight loss.

Fitness is important but choose something you enjoy.

RooKangaroo · 10/01/2020 21:59

Thanks all! I did it (well, half of it) a good few years ago and started to really enjoy it. I really liked the time out just for me and listening to music while I ran.

Hoping to get that feeling back this time, but agree with others that it's not worth it if I don't enjoy it. It's definitely more about a fitness thing and mental well-being (time out for me) than a weight loss thing.

BlueSeaPlease · 11/01/2020 12:56

Stephen Guyenet believes a bit of exercise helpful because somehow it “makes” the body “want” to be slimmer. But this is not the same as over activity.

In his book the Hungry Brain, apparently, he says modern food is designed to be highly palatable, and this is the central issue. People in the past often ate bland food or not particularly palatable food, and were also hungry quite a lot. It was often hard work to get and create meals too.

BlueSeaPlease · 11/01/2020 13:11

”Slim By Design: Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday Life” by Brian Wansink is more recommended in terms of action and solutions. ”The Hungry Brain” is meant to be more about the science than solutions.

elliejjtiny · 11/01/2020 16:32

Found a new battery for my scales. Weighed in at 133kg so that's 7kg off since I last weighed myself (in October I think). Makes it all worth it when you see the numbers going down.

Liskee · 12/01/2020 08:21

So many different strategies and suggested ways of losing weight declared here. It's great to see so many options and anecdotal evidence.

I've lost 5 and a half stone of a total 8 stone goal so far on Slimming World. It's been the flexibility with food, the focus on diet with exercise for wellbeing and the support from group thats kept me going.

Ultimately though what's in my head as I keep going towards my goal weight is how am I going to maintain and sustain this afterwards. I think good habits, building a routine and making the changes in food and exercise a part of normal daily life are key? Would welcome any advice in that respect!

OP congrats on the loss so far...keep going!!!

Ilovemyhairbeingstroked · 12/01/2020 08:41

Wow lots of information here . I’m very similar to you OP but am at a loss as to what to do for the best . I see many success stories with SW but then I also see lots of information on Facebook etc advising against it . I have to do something as I hate what I’m doing to my body and have become more reclusive because of it .

Lolly34h · 12/01/2020 09:07

2lb off this week and I've eaten so crap because of a funeral and other things going on. This week is the first real push so hoping to lose a little more than 2lb but its weight off not on so I ain't beating myself up too much. Trying to stay active too so I'm walking at least once a day and trying not to sit down at home too much

ringletsandtwiglets · 12/01/2020 09:21

Hi everyone :) Has anyone experienced a surprise big loss overnight?

I weigh every day using my Fitbit scales, at the same time and in the same place so no variations in floor surface. Over the past month or so, a loss of around 0.3 of a kilogram has been normal.

This morning, I was 2kg down on yesterday. I ate three healthy, substantial meals yesterday, and an hour of exercise, so just over 10k steps, but it was a bit of a shock to see that on the scales today. I even checked three times to see if the scales were working properly. Blush

northernlittledonkey · 12/01/2020 09:22

Morning OP, I’m on it too. Am 20 st 😬 and did SW last year but found it too patronising so DH and I are doing 16:8 .

cavalier · 12/01/2020 17:37

I find that when I eat / binge etc .... it’s my emotions that kick it all off .... we can diet as much as we want ... and keep punishing ourselves for over eating etc ... but I think my worst times are when I feel very upset ....this is part of the problem for me .... I’ve got a wedding in Feb so motivation is high ... I’m not denying myself anything just not bingeing on it all ( mostly choc ) fasting diets wouldn’t suit me ... cutting down on crap that I put in my tummy does help ... and detoxing from toxic people can help too ..: there are so Many elements to losing weight ... and so many reasons why we can be overweight .... I’ve got “elevated “ cholesterol so that is another bit motivation ... I do walk .. Zumba and sing ( for happiness 🙂 in a choir ) ... I don’t tbink one size fits all imho

frustratedashell · 12/01/2020 19:39

Only lost 1lb this week, rather disappointing. But I will plod on
