Half a stone off (or 3kg) in May

VivaFrida · 30/04/2019 15:44

A fresh slate for May!

Carrying over from the April thread but new joiners are welcome.

Please join this thread - all plans are included (calorie counters, weight watchers, citizens of slimming world, intermittent fasters, no-carbers, eating-only-blue-food eaters).

We are here to support each other and aim to lose 7 pounds, or 3 kgs.

Official start: tomorrow, May 1st.

My starting weight for May is 60.0 kgs and getting to 57-ish kg or just under by the end of the month would be great.

Who is in?

Hi, I know it's already half-way through the month, but can I join in? I really need some accountability.

I went from >15st to 10st3 a few years ago (getting me just into healthy BMI - I'm pretty short), but it's been creeping back up. Mostly going on holiday: I'd gain a stone, lose half, gain a stone, lose half, and now I'm nearly 12st again!! And now it appears I've passed some kind of threshold. I gained a few pounds on a weekend break, and instead of losing it like I used to (once lightish again), I've just gone up steadily. I can't wear my "skinny" clothes anymore and now tier-two are starting to be tight. I'm well into the overweight range again, and I don't want to keep going up.

I'm using MFP, and trying to do something like 16:8, but in the morning (if I eat in the afternoon/evening, I tend to just snack constantly and also feel sick to boot! You'd think that would get me to stop, but I keep going back for the "thing" that will settle my stomach when I know not having snacked in the first place was what I needed to do). It's socially difficult, though: skipping dinner is seen as weird, whereas skipping breakfast not so much (or maybe because people don't see you doing it).

But that's how I got down before, so I know it works. I just need to keep at it.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 14/05/2019 14:39

Hi everyone, I'm joining in late if that's OK.

I currently need to lose a little over half a stone to get to my bodybuilding competition weight of 8 1/2 stones and it'd be really useful to share ideas and motivation with other people in a similar situation.

My official weigh day is tomorrow — I'm a permanent WW member — and so we'll see if I've made any progress over the past week.

I'll post tomorrow with an update. Good luck to everyone Smile

chillychicken · 14/05/2019 14:44

57.8kg for me! That's 2.2kg gone since the end of April.

I went a bit over kcal yesterday as I was starving all day, but I was still in a deficit. Progress photos show no change but the trusty scales and tape measure do!

Today:
B - protein shake
L - ham & low fat cheese with salad and couscous
D - curried cod with chickpeas & rice
S - 2 x egg muffins, 1 babybel light

Any calories left will be spent on chocolate Grin (so long as protein target is hit, otherwise it'll be spent on beef jerky)

sazzle27 · 14/05/2019 16:10

Ahh well done on the non scale victory crazzzy!
Clothes are an amazing measurement away from the numbers etc on scales 😁

Incidentally i have found that my scales can alter by 1kg depending on whereabouts on the floor they are... inout them on the "intersection" of 4 tiles, so a corner per tile, just because it's the best place in the bathroom/not cramped... but an inch either side, still a corner per tile, the weight changes! 😱

cricketmum84 · 14/05/2019 17:39

The Greggs urge has been strong today, I've been flipping starving!
B - coffee and a banana
L - rocket, red onion and tomato salad with 40g veggie salad cheese and 10 olives
D - pasta with veggie pesto and more salad.

The lady who sits next to me at work had a huge sandwich in fresh tiger bread and I actually could have taken it out of her hands.

It's the first Eurovision semi final tonight (geek alert I know) so I'll be having a couple of glasses of wine while I watch :)

Startoftheyear2019 · 14/05/2019 18:49

I'm glad for everyone who's seeing the scales go down. I'm sad to report that I still haven't lost anything. 14 days of being pretty perfect and nothing! My friend reminded me at least I haven't gained, but I'm still stuck at 11 stone. I'm doing exercise and using MFP but it feels pretty disheartening tbh. This thread helps and I'm going to stick with it, but I'm just praying I'll suddenly drop in a day or so!

Lookingforpizza · 14/05/2019 20:58

Argh! Why is pub food always so much more appealing when you’re trying to be good. I’m sticking to my allotted 2 x Diet coke. I’d never even normally bother buying pub food so not sure why it’s become so alluring now Confused

OhTheRoses · 15/05/2019 06:43

For the lady who asked if it was harder post children, yes it is ime. I was 9st6lb when I fell pg with ds 25ish years ago (my perfect weight - am 5'7"). Gained 2st7lb and lost it by the time he was 6 weeks (infective mastitis and a breast abscess helped). Gained 3 stone with dd (but was pg 5 weeks longer). When she was 3 months I hit 9st10lb in a growth spurt when I literally needed all my resources to keep up with her. Thise were the days when weaning was recommended at 12 weeks.

I have broken 10st once since, by a lb. I was 8stish in my 20's sometimes less and will confess I was an undiagnosed anorexic in all probability.

Hit 10st in my 30s
Hit 11st in my 40s
Hit 12st in my 50s rising to more than 13

Obviously going up and down with dieting but not breaking previous barriers. And yes it gets harder and harder.

I have to be careful vis exercise due to back problems (I have broken it - osteoporosis - genetic but not helped by a poor relationship with food in my 20s) so it's pilates, walking and gardening.

Have a desk job and work long hours, under pressure and a parking space so find 30 mins walking during the week an effort.

Like someone saud upthread, despite only losing 1lb so far in May (after 7lb in April), my clothes are feeling better. Can only assume it's due to weight settling or water loss converting to fat loss??

Apols for essay and I hope everyone has a good day.

murmuration · 15/05/2019 06:54

Okay, I managed one day :)

Ate between 7am-3pm yesterday. Really, really wanted a snack around 5pm, but did not have one!!

Mssngvwls · 15/05/2019 07:32

Good work everyone! OhtheRoses I'm so jealous of your height. At 5ft3 I'd really love to be a few inches taller!

I had an ok day yesterday, bought some stuff to try for a wedding in a month and I'm feeling really good about it. I'm not slim by any stretch but I got the clothes nicely and they are flattering.

I've hit a plateau now despite sticking to the diet and doing what I can exercise-wise. Have lost a stone but have another half to go and not sure how to do it. Maybe it will come with time.

2 small children + ageing definitely does not help... I was looking at some of my wedding photos last night and was mystified as to how small my ribcage was Confused I'm not sure that's ever gonna be smaller now...

Lookingforpizza · 15/05/2019 07:45

Morning all! Grin

I’ve done my official weekly weigh in, just shy of reaching 81, coming in at 82.2. Really happy though as it means a 3lb loss for me this week, and an overall loss of 5lbs for May so far. Reaching 80kg seems really achievable for the rest of the month so that’s what I am going to aim for!
Today’s food:
B: Berry muesli and yoghurt
L: Chicken salad
D: Salmon, salad with a steamed sweet potato
Snacks: Banana before gym and some maltesers later with a hot chocolate.

That will put me at around 1200 calories so hopefully that all keeps me full.

Good luck today everyone, you’re all doing so well and I’m so glad we have this thread as it really is keeping me accountable!

VivaFrida · 15/05/2019 09:02

Welcome to the new people - loving all the stories and comparisons - to

Star DAY 15 Star

Basically, today is the day when VivaFrida gets her flipping act together:

I weighed myself and it's 60.3kg today... basically this month I have lost NOTHING and actually put 0.3kg on.

I need to have stern words with myself.

Because I am relatively near my goal weight (4 kg) and I have now lost 10kg, got to a healthy weight, I somehow think I have 'made it' and I am 'allowing' myself to overeat.

But I am not there!

I have a cupboard full of old clothes (from old me, 3 years ago) that do not fit me. My arms and legs are still double the size they used to be and I can feel the extra baggage when I run - I am a good 2 minutes/miles slower than I used to be. I also know I am still eating more food than I used to eat (although that's difficult to quantify).

SO - I am shaking things up.

This is phase 2 of the challenge, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going!!

  1. I think my food measurements are not accurate enough so I am changing from the old ww app to counting calories on my fitness pal. It's a mahossive faff compared to the ease of points but I think I need it. I also tend to rely on fruit and vegetables to fill me up... and it may well be that I am overheating those.
  1. I need to keep an eye on my weight so I am going to weigh myself every day.
  1. I will keep on keeping on with the running and exercise because it helps my anxiety as well as consuming calories.

Wish me luck my friends!! It takes courage to switch things about!!

@VivaFrida you are a brilliant inspiration! I have just had some toast (first slice in 15 days) but I'm enthused again and I'll keep on the straight and narrow now. Thanks.

Crazzzycat · 15/05/2019 09:58

It’s weigh in time for me. I’m 80.8 kg today, which is up from last week.
It seems that the 1kg overnight weight gain from earlier this week is planning to hang around a bit longer.

It’s not ideal, but after getting into my old trousers yesterday I’m not going to worry too much.

I’m actually wondering if the increase is the result of the sudden hot weather we’re having here? It’s certainly affecting my appetite, as I don’t feel like eating much at all. May be our bodies hold on to more water to help us cope with the heat? 🤔

Wellthatwastricky · 15/05/2019 10:48

OhTheRoses it was me (I think!) that speculated my post-childbearing body is finding it much harder to lose weight. I put on 3 stone approx both times, it's such a slog! Interesting to hear your experience of it too.

Crazzzy I've had periods like this, where suddenly I'm 2-3lbs beaver for a few days then it reverts, fingers crossed for you.

Viva, I'm hugely impressed with your exercise regime and boundless enthusiasm. Will be very interested to hear how you feel switching to MFP goes. I did old style WW a number of years ago (only had 12-14 lbs to lose then). It worked really well and I kept up quite a few of the recipes and the weight stayed off until I got pregnant years later. Tried new style WW last year and really struggled with it, lost very slowly and my old WW recipes suddenly had too many points because of the carb content. So, this time, I'm using MFP, and mostly enjoying it but I do miss the simplicity of WW and the "freebie" veg and fruit, especially when I'm weighing bloody cucumber! However, even on old style WW I didn't allow myself more than one or two pieces of fruit a day because of the risk of overdoing it.

Today I'm having a random yearning for sausage rolls. Thankfully I live in a small village and at home looking after a poorly DD so no chance of passing a shop selling one.

shoelace88 · 15/05/2019 16:11

ImpossibleNovelty · 15/05/2019 20:11

Nooo, cricketmum all those delicious carbs are making my mouth water! Well done on your will power.
I’ve lost a pound according to my scales - not a lot but better than staying the same for all of May. So hurrah!

Crazzzycat · 15/05/2019 20:56

Wow FunkyBarnYardBroom that’s an impressive overall loss. You should get a special badge for that ⭐️

It’s funny how we often don’t notice how all those little losses add up, but 25 pounds is a hell of a lot. You must be so pleased with that!

murmuration · 15/05/2019 21:19

I'm nearly through another day. Think I'll make it. Ate between 7am-3pm again. Really tough thing is making supper for the family and not having any. Also, child's leftovers: I would usually just eat the last few bits left over as I hate food waste. How do other people manage this? I actually put three slices of strawberry in the fridge today with the plan I'll bring them in to work as part of snack tomorrow. Couldn't bare to see nearly a whole strawberry just tossed out!

FunkyBarnYardBroom · 15/05/2019 21:33

Thanks @Crazzzycat

Fitbit gave me a badge! 25 pounds in 14 weeks isn't bad going is it.

Everyone keep at it. It really does add up 😁

Lookingforpizza · 15/05/2019 22:22

That’s amazing @funky!!!!

cricketmum84 · 15/05/2019 22:24
