We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and all at different stages, but we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread(s), I’ll add one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals to you.

Introvertedbuthappy 4 stone down! Wow! Fantastic :)

zinrepus · 15/07/2019 13:58

Late into the game, but I could do with some ladies' support. I'm currently hovering around 18 stone, looking to lose about 6 stone (I'm 5' 9"). This is the heaviest I've been, I was down at the lower end of 16 stone last year (wedding prep and all that) but realised after the fact that my routine was much closer to crash dieting and wasn't sustainable long-term...and then gained 2 stone back.

When I was 23 I got down to about 13.5 stone, and I am feeling the difference now at 30. I'm keen to shift a fair amount of weight in the next year. My doctor doesn't seem too concerned, but I think his perspective may have shifted one he weighed me (I've got a good waistline that hides about a stone or two).

DH and I are due to kick up our routines in two weeks' time, but I've already been tracking on MFP for a few weeks again (and down 4 lbs for it).

Bit of an essay, sorry for that, but pleased to be writing on this thread!

3dogs2cats · 15/07/2019 14:56

Oh how lovely, people doing really well. Introverted but happy you smashed thru The 16 stone barrier. Well done. I just converted my 102 kilos and I am .87 of a pound away from under 16 stone. Think that may just keep me away from gin and icecream this week.
@greensleeves. Well done on the smoking thing. I stopped last November and gained a kilo every month. Horrific. But better than smoking. Lots of people were supportive of me stopping, but one friend said it was about time cos no one with any sense still smoked. Tough love but it was her comment I remembered when tempted!
@HoneysuckIejasmine. Well done you. I do wonder if you can’t shift the last 4 pounds because you are where your body needs to be. A size 10/12 at 5.6 sounds brilliant to this size 18 at 5.7., so it may be that , but I know that I look skinny at12.5 stone despite the BMI telling me that is overweight. I am going to try to get to 11 stone, though. I measured my waist yesterday and it is 42 inches. Awful.

thisisgettingridiculous · 16/07/2019 00:44

Hello, I haven't been able to stay on track because my DS fell and broke his arm. It is very serious and he needed immediate surgery and two nights in hospital. So yeh, I thought I would have lost weight due to the stress and fact I couldn't eat but no such luck!!! Anyway, losing weight is the least of my worries now while my son heals but I will try to keep my comfort eating under control.

EMhwg2019 · 16/07/2019 07:57

Hi everyone, is it ok to join please? I've got 7 stone to lose to be a healthy BMI but have no idea how much I'd really need to lose to feel happy with how I look and feel. My weight has just been climbing for years.

I have a 4 month old baby and am breastfeeding so I'm really conscious of not wanting to reduce my supply. Does anyone have any experience of losing weight while breastfeeding?

I've just read about hunger directed eating on another thread and I like the idea of feeling like I'm taking back control over food. I've spent my whole adult life worrying about calories, trying slimming world, eating low fat...nothings worked because I don't have the long term willpower.

I need to feel accountable and have somewhere to keep myself on track so I'd love it if this thread was the place. Im hoping I'll do better with people who also understand having a lot of weight to lose rather than people who only need to lose a stone overall.

vickibee · 16/07/2019 09:54

@thisisgettingridiculous
hope your son is on the mend now
EMhwg - you have got a newborn so don't be so hard on yourself, your hormones will be all over the place
I too have limited will power, my friend from UNI visited at the weekend and kindly brought a box of continental chocs. I didn't want to eat them but I did - thank god it was only a small box. I don't buy any temptation stuff for this reason and thankfully we live very rurally so no easy access to take away or convenience stores. The nearest McD is 7 miles away which helps because I can't resist their ice creams

HoneysuckIejasmine · 16/07/2019 21:51

EMhwg hi, welcome. I breastfeed. I started my weight loss journey when DD was a baby, and quickly got pregnant again with DS. Since he was born, I resumed dieting (when he was 4 months old) and have lost a further 5.5 stone whilst feeding him. He still feeds fucking loads now at 22 months old.

So you need to estimate how many calories you are using for that. An exclusively breastfed baby under the age of 6 months (i.e. not weaned) requires 400-600 calories a day depending on frequency of feeding etc. I use MFP so I created "breastfeeding" as an exercise and added it every day, initially at 500 cals. I then just calorie counted using the mfp recommended target (+ the breastfeeding 500 exercise). I tailed down the 500 gradually as DS got older and weaned. Essentially every time I was hitting a plateau for a few weeks whilst being within my calories, I took the breastfeeding calories down by 100.

I now award myself 100 extra a day for feeding, and my mfp target is 1200.

Thanks for the welcomes.

@HoneysuckIejasmine Thank you, that's excellent advice and I've set MFP up with the breastfeeding exercise now. Congratulations on your weight loss, that's fantastic!

moonlight1705 · 17/07/2019 11:01

EMhwg2019 I wish I was still breastfeeding, was the best diet I had ever been on. Sadly since stopping I've put on 4lb. I hope it all works out for you using the method that honey shared.

crazyandlazy · 18/07/2019 08:54

Hello
Can I join?
I'm 230lbs. Goal weight is 115lbs however I'll be happy when I get to 140lb (healthy bmi, size 10 etc).

Greensleeves · 19/07/2019 13:24

I'm feeling a bit despondent today Sad

I haven't put a foot wrong all week, stuck religiously to the diet, drink nothing but water and green tea, calorie counted on MFP (between 1000 and 1200 calories per day, over three meals/sensible snacks), walked at least 4k each day - walked 15k on Wednesday and 10k yesterday. Started doing a bit of light aerobics at home as well.

Weighed myself this morning and haven't lost an ounce.

Apologies for the moan but I feel like throwing in the towel and ordering a pizza and some Ben and Jerry's Sad

Saltnpepper5 · 19/07/2019 14:05

Can I join please?

I Lost 7 stone in 2014. Put it back on over the years due to a abusive relationship then i met my new partner and now have a neally 1 year old baby.

Im back on MFP. Iv lost 5lb this week so that's 21lb down all together so far. I weigh in on Friday mornings.

I used to go to the gym 5 days a week but I now go on my cross trainer at home.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 19/07/2019 16:41

Greensleeves are you eating back your exercise calories? Otherwise you aren't eating enough. For me, 1km is about 100 cals. When I was bigger, it was more. So for arguements sake let's say you're 100 cals for 1km too....

1100 cals (average), 400 cals from a 4km walk, that's only 700 cals net. 1500 cals from 15km, -400 cals net. You get the idea. Account for aerobics too and you're on trouble.

It's sustainable to eat back all of your exercise calories and still lose weight - you'll have a net of 1200 anyway. But if you want to speed it up and you feel well enough to do so, try eating back half the calories.

If you're not sure how many calories you are using, try an app like Strava which you can link to your MFP.

Welcome, newbies. Salt well done on escaping your previous relationship. Flowers

Well another week of STS but I've so much rubbish then it feels like a good result.

And another week beckons so let's see what happens. I've planned some delicious meals but the snacking is really getting to me.

daisyhead08 · 21/07/2019 18:43

Hi everyone, so I'm back after almost three weeks in the US on holidays. I've put on either 0 lbs or 3 lbs depending on how my scales is feeling. I know it's not a loss but this is a huge deal for me. I used to gain between 7 and 14 pounds every holiday. I have a good few nights out coming up but my aim is to keep going. I hope everyone is doing well. Welcome to those who have joined. I've given myself two years to do this so fingers crossed.

Hmm not sure I believe in Cindy..
I appear to have gained weight this week. Not sure if that’s fair, but I have done a fair bit of guesstimating on calories. Time to start weighing I think. I seem to weigh 103 kilos this week, up a kilo, but I hope it was sodium or a big poo hiding or something, anything!

peachgreen · 22/07/2019 13:45

Hi everyone - can I join in? I want to lose 110lbs in my first stage of weight loss - my dream is to lose 160lbs but for now 110lbs would be lovely! I've been overweight for most of my life - I was a heavy child but after an operation at 16 to remove an ovarian cyst I put on a lot of weight and have bounced between a size 20-26 ever since apart from a period after getting my heart broken where I lost 70lbs in 3 months (essentially by not eating!) and went down to a 16-18. Had a baby a year and a half ago and while I managed my weight really carefully through pregnancy, I had very bad PND and ended up putting on almost 50lbs. Horrific. Anyway, I'm 14lbs down so far and have now started in earnest.

Am using MFP to log calories - it's giving me an allowance of 1400 cal a day but that seems a bit high to me - any thoughts? I'm not logging any exercise and don't want it to count towards my calorie allowance just yet.

moonlight1705 · 22/07/2019 14:32

Hello all, OK I'm going to say something controversial about calories.... If you go too low then your body will respond accordingly, you will feel the cold more as calories will not be spent heating you properly etc. Your body has an amazing way of adjusting to calory deficit so it's worth being sensible with your calories and not just heading straight for the lowest possible.

I think all of us who have yoyo dieted know that it just isn't sustainable. I seem to be slowly (very slowly) losing weight through trying to keep off the sugar. As someone said, a calory of sugar reacts very differently in your body to a calory of vegetables. I've realised that I need to eat more than I thought in terms of calories but the right things. I'm now at a new plateau and will continue to push on with reducing sugar consumption as it works nicely for me.

3dogs2cats · 22/07/2019 14:38

@peachgreen.i am amazed MFP gives you only 1400, I get 1800. Moonlight is right, don’t go too low.

peachgreen · 22/07/2019 14:50

1400 is definitely doable for me - I lost weight before getting pregnant by doing 1200 or less for almost a year and I coped fine. Though it definitely does involve bulking out with veg, salad etc and avoiding anything too sugary. That's why I was worried 1400 was too high! Glad to hear it isn't and will stick at it. I do have a "cheat day" on a Friday when I go to more like 2000-2500 too - it's been sustainable for me in the past (until I got PND and started bribing myself with baked goods to leave the house!) so fingers crossed it will be again.

peachgreen · 22/07/2019 14:51

Oh I've just double checked and it's actually 1600 a day - sorry - not sure what was happening there. Thanks for getting me to check it!

Greensleeves · 22/07/2019 20:46

peachgreen I have a similar amount to lose and MFP gives me 1420 allowance, I come in around 1200 most days and don't feel as though I a starving myself. I eat a really good breakfast which helps me get moving.

I've upped my walking this week, I've done 10k a day for 4 days in a row now and am really enjoying it (knackered though). Weighed myself this morning and have lost 4lb which I'm delighted about as I weighed myself on Friday and hadn't lost anything and was really crestfallen.

vickibee · 29/07/2019 10:14

We are going on holiday to Greece on Wednesday and I am generally feeling very excited. No doubt I will gain weight on holiday !
I am less of a beached whale and will dare to wear my swimsuit. I weighed in at 15 10 and 1/2 today so nearly lost 3 stone. I am going to try really hard to STS and eat those yummy Greek salad. Their tomatoes and melons taste of sunshine - unlike UK supermarket ones which taste of very little. Any tips anyone on how to maintain on your jollies?

clucky3 · 29/07/2019 10:54

I managed a small loss on a week long half board a couple of months ago. I was careful but didn't feel that I deprived myself. This is what I did:

Low carbs - not no carbs, I had the occasional small piece of toast, or croutons on a salad, and a plate of chips once, but I avoided eating sandwiches, pasta salads, rice and potatoes when selecting from the buffet. Just went with meat/fish and plenty of veg and salads.

I ate dessert every night

Drinks: stuck to G&Ts (no wine) and the odd beer, I didn't drink much alcohol though. Lots of fizzy water.

Lunchtime - as half board we bought from local shops and ate in most lunchtimes. DH and kids has sandwiches with chopped up veg sticks, cheese and a few crisps. I bought tinned fish and ate that instead of the sandwich. So lunch most days was a tin of sardines with some lovely tomatoes and cucumber. It was nicer than it sounds and I was really glad afterwards that I'd done it. I know if I'd eaten sandwiches for 7 days I would totally have fallen off the wagon
