We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and all at different stages, but we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread(s), I’ll add one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals to you.

Hi, there, I've been lurking but too ashamed to post. I am hopeless. mytittifersungtheirsong has emboldened me to ask if I can join in here too, please. I am tall-ish, obese and have at least about 35 kilos, or 75lb to lose. And I can't do it. The more I try, the more I weigh. I don't have willpower, that's all. I can be good for a while and then I stop and undo any good I've done myself in the first place. I have lost the grand total of 4lb since the beginning of March when I was told by my doctor I had to lose a lot of weight, quickly, for my health. I struggled to lose even those 4lb and am only glad I didn't gain! But still, seriously, 4lb loss in nearly 3 months of consciously trying? When it should drop off me because I have so much to lose? Talk about a failure! I don't know what to do but keep trying but I daren't go back to my doctor!
I'm not quite sure why I'm here, except I weigh about 17stone, too, at the moment
Anyway, good luck to everyone here and so well done to those of you who manage consistently to lose weight and have willpower!

Seeleyboo · 23/05/2019 11:21

I'd like to lose 100 pounds.

MadeleineMaxwell · 23/05/2019 11:25

Re willpower - the only thing that works for me, as I too have tried lots of different things, is to eat more! Just make it fruit and veg - I aim for around 8 portions a day. E.g. post-dinner, I used to go off to my studio and eat Jaffa cakes. Now I eat a portion of frozen cherries. They're sweet, sort of like ice cream since they're frozen, and packed full of vitamins, fibre and anthocyanins.

Try it for a week or two. When you want something sweet, eat fruit. You want something savoury, eat veg and/or a small portion of wholegrain carbs of some sort, like oatcakes with some low-cal protein like cottage cheese or a boiled egg. Ease off on your carbs, sat fat and processed food, add in more veg to your main meals. Eat more!

vickibee · 23/05/2019 15:35

A bit of a milestone today, lost 2 stone in total since mid February but still 233 lb. only another 4 to go... I have been setting mini targets which seem more achievable
Madeleine maxwell, I agree you have to gorge on ‘free’ food and fill up on veg. Who got fat from eating salad. Always have easy to access snacks to satisfy cravings, nuts, carrot sicks, fruit etc

Introvertedbuthappy · 24/05/2019 09:23

I’ve been keeping it up, pleased with my progress.
Starting weight: 20 stone in Jan
Weight today: 16 stone 10
Total lost: 46lbs
Weight to lose: 74lbs. Over a third of the way to a healthy BMI. I can also now run 5k without stopping and now have a resting heart rate of 55.

fourquenelles · 24/05/2019 09:58

Morning again everyone. Is it Friday again? Where does the time go. Lovely to see new people here and to read of successes and strategies from old hands.

I have lost 15 lbs in my first month of calorie controlled eating. I am over the moon. My mini target is to get to 16 stone by the time I go to the Green Man Festival in the middle of August so I can use a normal person camping chair. I have 23 lbs to lose to hit that target so I hope it is doable.

I am finding counting calories relatively straightforward. I have scales and a notebook on the work top and record everything. It does mean that I can have "non diet" foods just in normal people portions. However I have been majoring on fruit and veg. I have also cut out bread, cake, biscuits and most pasta (I still have noodles with my stir fries). I have NOT cut out red wine Wink.

I found THESE. Only 61 calories a pop and refreshingly creamy and not artificial tasting. My summer saviour.

Activity levels in terms of socialising have increased and I am now directing an amdram play as well as singing in a choir!

Keep on keeping on one and all. We have got this!

HoneysuckIejasmine · 24/05/2019 23:32

Hi Madeleine. I'm sorry you had to hear that from your doctor, that can't have been fun. Sounds like you've made a good start. Don't feel too bad if you wobble a bit at first - it's a pretty major lifestyle overhaul, a lot of ingrained habits to break. The important thing is to Keep On Keeping On (KOKO), as we say round these parts. I don't cope especially well when I'm not catering tbh. I've become a bit controlling, although a lot of that is because of my son's allergies. But I always try to make good choices and try not to look too longingly at everyone else's plate. I often take a photo of my plate and use that to log it on mfp later, with a healthy dose of guesstimation happening. I don't eat treats etc mostly because I can't - I breastfeed my son and he'll get ill if I do, so it's easy to say no to cakes, sweets, etc. My willpower isn't so great with our own stuff - there's some allergy friendly cupcakes in the fridge right now. I could happily eat the whole box. But I am making sure that each one I have is shared with the DC, and my bit I eat on a plate, with a fork, and really try to enjoy. Savour it.

Vicki have the pizza!! Make your food work for you. I often make a pizza using a wrap (180 ish cals), tomato puree (bugger all), whatever random veg I have in (minimal), wafer thin ham (about 1 cal per gram) and cheese (about 90 cals worth). Quick and easy and usually comes in at less than 300 cals for the whole thing including my weakness for BBQ sauce. Take away pizza is approx 200 cals a slice, supermarket pizza about 800 for (whole of) the standard size. (Let's face it, none of us are here because we only eat half the pizza!)

tittifer, namechange hi, welcome. Well done for plucking up the courage to say hello. Food addiction is a very real and very hard thing. Something like smoking, drinking, drugs... You try, you give it up, you never have the have another one again. Food... Well you have to eat. Every time you do, you have to face the addicts urges. It's like making a recovered alcoholic drink just one glass of their tipple a day, forever more. Of course, sometimes you are going to relapse. That's a fact of life. We want to avoid it, we certainly don't want to celebrate it, but we do want to accept it will happen. And then do the hard thing if drawing a line and getting on with it. I remember reading once that "you wouldn't throw away the whole bouquet because one flower dies, so don't throw away your body for the sake of one bad day". Break the cycle. If you're on Instagram I highly recommend fatgirlfedup and thefitnesschef. Both worth a follow for sure.

As you're just starting out, I'd echo my previous advice of making sure you know your measurements and also you exact starting weight. It really helps if you know exactly where you've come from, if you stall for a bit later on.

Vicki great job on the 2 stone loss, what great progress!! I'll also third Madeleine's advice. Snack smart if you like to snack. Don't deny yourself, just adjust.

Introverted that's amazing! Huge well done on the 5k. I'm on week 7 of the C25K programme. Doing parkrun tomorrow but don't imagine I will manage to run the whole thing. I'm aiming to run for at least 25 mins (week 7 requirement) and if I walk the rest that's fine, if I run it that's even better.

Four how fab! Check you out, stepping out with the hobbies etc, that's brilliant. I know what you mean about camping chairs etc. I'm now not too scared to sit on them, or carefully scanning adverts to find their max weight limit. Fab loss too, I'd love to lose over a stone in a month! Good going!

I hit my 7 stone loss 2 weeks ago (did I post? Sorry if not). Weighing in again tomorrow morning, we we'll see if it's a sts, loss or gain

Hi everyone. I have no idea where to start to be perfectly honest but equally I'll try not to bore you.

I firstly want to say that you're all stars! I'm pleasantly surprised to see that genuine and inspiring people are still real.

I'm desperate to lose weight (a lot of weight) and have been for a while. I have quite a lengthy history with mental health issues and my weight does nothing to help that but it also makes weight loss so much harder. I'm 5'10" and weigh 300+ lbs Blush and also have stretch marks eVeRyWhErE. I've tried most diets out there and yet time and time again I fuck it up lose my motivation.

I'm just so miserable and can't bear to even look in the mirror.

I would love to join you guys on this journey if that's okay?
xoxo

HoneysuckIejasmine · 25/05/2019 06:59

Hi heaven, welcome! Don't be embarrassed, I was 270lbs but I'm only 5'6" so probably about the same ratio. I'd also tried lots of diets and failed. I'm a huge advocate for basic, boring, calorie counting. Download My Fitness Pal and get going today. If you put in your stats it'll recommend a calorie limit to help you lose. Frankly it was quite eye opening when I first started logging calories. I knew what food was healthy and what wasn't, but there were lots of things where I had thought they were ok, but were actually really high. Definitely given me a better understanding of what I'm eating!

Give it a go today and see how you find it. 😊

cricketmum84 · 25/05/2019 08:02

Hi @heavenandelle please don't feel embarrassed. We all have to start somewhere. I'm sure you don't need me to tell you that the best thing you can do for your mental health is start to look after yourself physically, self care is a big help. I have struggled with anxiety and depression for 2 years now and had a big weight gain when I first went on medication. I went up to 25 stone! I hardly ever left the house, ate crap and drank way too much.

I follow ww online, started just before Christmas, I also cut out all meat and dairy about 6 weeks ago. I've lost almost 5 stone so far and feel so much better in myself.

moonlight1705 · 25/05/2019 09:26

I've had a lapse this week and put on 1lb Sad

Its my last week of maternity by myself and I think I subconsciously sabotaged it by saying that its only one packet of crisps etc

On the plus side DH is now on shared parental leave and we have two weeks together to go on walks, eat healthily. I never eat as badly in front of him as I do when alone....the joys of the secret binge.

Well done to all of you, so good to see everyone doing well. It has reminded me to go back to MFP.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 25/05/2019 09:44

Hello, mind if I join? Started my diet a few weeks ago at 246lb. Am now down to 241. I'll say my goal is 146 as 100lb loss will be more than enough to make me happy! Tbh I am just happy and grateful for every lb that comes off.

I am using MFP but I go to a local slimming world style group to get weighed. I know what a waste of a fiver but I need the accountability and I am taking on board some of the principles about eating more veg and fresh foods etc.

Went for a walk the other day and could hardly even walk 30 mins. I know I'm big but didn't realise how big and heavy and unfit I am Blush

HoneysuckIejasmine · 25/05/2019 11:41

I got a new personal best at parkrun today, took 6:30 off my previous time! Shock that's what C25K can do for you! I heartily recommend parkrun, it's absolutely ok to walk it and it's a great start to the weekend.

I think I ran about 4.5km of it, walked for a bit twice. Had breakfast a bit too late really and I was feeling it!

@HoneysuckIejasmine @cricketmum84 Thank you so much for your recommendations and support, you are both incredible! MASSIVE congratulations on your progress! You are both so inspiring! Bit cliche but...LET'S DO THIS! xoxo

cricketmum84 · 25/05/2019 14:41

I'm not too fussed about outing myself so thought I would provide a little inspiration for those of us who have just started on their weight loss journeys.
These are my before and after photos so far after 68lbs lost!!

Anyone looking to lose 100lbs plus... Thread 7
vickibee · 25/05/2019 16:19

Wow cricket mum you can really see he difference, congrats on your success u look amazing
Honeysuckle, well done on the running, I cannot run I have arthritis in my left knee and hobble everywhere. Wish I could run I do walking instead which is nowhere near as good.

fourquenelles · 25/05/2019 18:16

cricketmum you look amazing and considerably younger too!

mytittifersungtheirsong · 25/05/2019 20:16

Thanks @cricketmum84 you look amazing

At a work event for three days and very restricted by food on offer. I've noticed my stomach feels distended and hurts after meals. Also getting purple stretch marks on my stomach.

I'm thinking of doing a vlcd for a few weeks to get me kick started. I don't advocate them long terms but they have helped before to shrink my stomach a bit.

Dolallytats · 25/05/2019 21:42

Hi
Can I ask some questions please? First I'll tell you all a bit about my situation.

I am 265 lbs and only 5'2....so I look like a ball. I'm really angry with myself for getting to this point but here I am. For the last 15 years I have been severely agoraphobic and partly because of this I piled on the weight. I also have IBS which means I have a hard time eating fruit and veg, I mean I do, but in small portions so I tend to fill up with carbs instead.

I am a recently diagnosed Type 2 Diabetic (more kicking myself, I knew it would happen but I buried my head) so want to low carb as this is recommended.

As I am unable to get out much, literally just a few minutes, my legs have become pretty weak.

I need to lose this weight, it just feels too much. I can't imagine getting 10 lb down let alone 100.

Has anyone got any tips for indoor exercise (for when I feel less anxious) or ideas as to how I can overhaul my diet without having to be stuck in the bathroom all day!! I would prefer not to calorie count because I get stupidly obsessed with it and was hoping to try a 'low carb, high fat' method.

TIAb

clucky3 · 25/05/2019 22:26

Can I join you? This thread is totally inspiring. I haven't set a target but I am more than 100lbs away from a healthy BMI. Have been on the Cambridge diet for 2 weeks now and lost 8lbs so far, much slower in the second week. Currently 276lbs. Healthy weight here I come.

itscallednickingbentcoppers · 25/05/2019 23:37

Hi @Dolallytats I am 5 ft 2 as well. We can do it together. There's lots of workout videos on YouTube. I'm going to start with a gentle one then see if I can build up a bit.

heavenandelle · 26/05/2019 00:28

@cricketmum84 you look absolutely incredible and so happy!

If anyone else has any before and afters I would love to see them. It doesn't matter how small the change is I just find them so inspiring.

Hey @Dolallytats As a fellow sufferer of agoraphobia and extreme anxiety and the gym is my idea of hell. I'm only just starting this weight loss journey much like you, however I've found some great HIIT (high intensity interval training) workouts that are short, flexible and have helped me lose weight before. Lucy Wyndham-Reed does some great workouts for targeting belly fat and The Body Coach does some good ones too. I'm weighing in tomorrow morning and I know that I'm going to be 300+ lbs (I'm kicking myself with you) although I am 5'10".

fourquenelles · 26/05/2019 09:43

Dolallytats OK TMI alert and I promise I am not the poo troll (perhaps I should have name changed!).
At nearly 19 stone and 5 foot 3 and a bit I had the most awful digestive system. Reflux, heartburn and symptoms like IBS. I was throwing up with dreadful chest pains and on a couple of occasions when out I didn't quite make it home before I lost control of my sphincter. On one memorable occasion I was walking my dogs when I felt the world about to leave me and had to go behind a tree splattering one of the dogs who was a bit too curious about what mum was up to. Mortifying.
In the last month I have cut out bread, cake and biscuits. I have used those almost calorie free noodles from Holland and Barrett too. I have upped my vegetables and salads; green leafy in the main. I do have fruit on my porridge. Now I am doing huge poos, sometimes 3 a day but they are "proper" ones not the unexpected explosions of the past. I haven't had reflux, heartburn or been sick in a month now. Like I said maybe TMI. Cutting out a lot of carbs and eating veg has really helped my digestive tract never mind the weight loss.
I'd also say, don't beat yourself up over exercise just yet. You loose weight through food more than exercise so concentrate on finding the right eating system for you first. If you do exercise make sure it is very gentle. You don't want to overdo it and damage yourself so you have to stop!
You have got this.

Dolallytats · 26/05/2019 15:07

Thank you all for being so lovely and supportive. I am going to give it a go....100lb feels impossible, but if I don't start it will get to a much bigger number.
