We’re a very friendly, supportive group, and all at different stages, but we’re all seeing some real changes in ourselves and our attitudes to food. It’s a long old road, but it helps to chat along the way

We tend to weigh in on Fridays or Saturdays, but feel free to join in at any time, with whatever weight loss method you think works best for you. Some of us have lost more than others, but we're all in this together, so if you're losing, gaining or staying the same, it's nice to have some inspiration to keep going.

We’re always welcoming to newcomers, but as with the previous thread(s), I’ll add one caveat - we’re all here because we are trying to lose a LOT of weight. If you’re looking to lose the last half stone, or even two or three stone, this might not be the thread for you. Good luck with your goals, but you may find more support with in threads with people who have similar goals to you.

Hi can I join you all. I've been a yoyo dieter most of my adult life but now I'm in for 40s losing weight has become so much harder. Couple that with an injury that makes exercise difficult means that now I am the heaviest I have ever been.

I weighed in this morning at 239lbs. My goal weight is 10st so 99lbs to lose.

Diet started today.

fourquenelles · 10/05/2019 11:52

Hi again everyone. Lovely to be amongst you all.
One lb off this week so 12 lbs in 3 weeks (I couldn't count and undersold my loss last week lol).
I am abit frustrated by "just" a lb as I have been scrupulous in measuring and weighing and keeping within my daily calorie allowance of 1000. I haven't over measured and under counted at all as the only person I would be cheating is myself - I even counted the Trebor extra strong mint I had one day 9 calories if you are interested
However, at my age a lb is a good loss and the number is going down not up.

I have been binge watching my 600lb life too and have been amazed at the huge losses some achieve BEFORE surgery. Also how much they can eat. Mind you have eaten a whole cake/tub of icecream/box of jaffa cakes in one sitting too so I can't judge.

I missed a friends funeral last month because the invite said "glamorous" in honour of the deceased and I couldn't do it. All I have are dog walking tents. But amonth on, this week I joined a local choral group and had so much fun on my first session.

See you all next week!

cricketmum84 · 10/05/2019 15:45

Well the hard work and resisting rubbish is paying off! Another 2lbs this week which means I have officially lost 4 stone since Christmas.

fourquenelles · 10/05/2019 17:21

Wowser cricketmum that is fabuous.

MrsTeaspoon · 11/05/2019 02:58

Nipping in to say...was so annoyed with myself as had big bar of chocolate, couldn’t understand it as I don’t snack and really have gone off chocolate, now I’ve discovered I’ve got first period since giving birth and I’m like, oh that explains it! Ha! Anyway, I haven’t caved and started eating rubbish again I’ve just accepted it and gone straight back to eating sensibly even though I’m soo tired. Oh, and I can do up the jeans that a month ago I couldn’t get past my knees so I must be losing. I’ll focus on sensible all month and hopefully resist the chocolate next month!

Well done on losses everyone. And @fourquenelles well done for starting a new social situation, it sounds like fun! I’m sorry you missed the funeral, I wouldn’t be able to do glamorous either. But we will.

moonlight1705 · 11/05/2019 08:14

Just checking in after a week off. It was my dsis hen do last weekend and I had put on a little (no surprise really considering what I ate) but have lost it again.
So in two weeks I have essentially STS but it was a massive weekend in my year.

Well done on all your losses, there are some amazing figures here. I've never lost huge amounts in one go despite my large weight so it must be a lovely feeling to have a significant loss. Smile

HoneysuckIejasmine · 11/05/2019 08:38

Welcome DrReed. A lot of us have been yo-yo dieting all our lives too. That's why it's important to remember that this is a lifestyle change, not a diet. It's not going to end and you "go back to normal". This is the new normal. Please ask for any help or advice you want or need, but don't try to make any changes too quickly.

Four tbh, I think you're not eating enough. I aim to eat 1300 a day now. At the start it was more like 1800. Mfp doesn't let you set a target of less than 1200 a day and honestly I think that's the right call. Try eating a bit more next week (certainly feel free to exercise more if it helps you cope mentally) but also remember you are (presumably) a woman so your weight it at the mercy of hormonal fluctuations. Weight loss won't be consistent in most women.

Cricket well done! That's a huge achievement!

MrsT I'm guess your jeans haven't changed size so it must be you! Congratulations! Koko and the scales will show in time. Don't beat yourself up about the chocolate. There's no such thing as good and bad food - everything in moderation.

Moonlight you're doing so well! That's absolutely the right approach to take - enjoy yourself, and fit these events in around the healthy eating.

This morning I have hit 98.25lbs lost, which means I've lost 7 stone! Woooooo!!

This week: 1lb
Lost to date: 98.25lbs
To lose: 14.50lbs

@HoneysuckIejasmine 7stone!! That's incredible! How much more are you wanting to lose? I don't suppose we could convince you to show us before and after pics? I bet you can feel such a difference!

I've got a random question for those who have lost a fair bit of weight - how do you lose it from your fingers?? I haven't been able to get my wedding rings on for about a year now, I weigh less than I did when I last took them off for an MRI scan and couldn't get them back on, yet even though I weigh less my fingers are still too fat for them!!

HoneysuckIejasmine · 11/05/2019 09:27

cricket I'll have a look at editing some to share. Regarding fingers - mine just slimmed gradually. My wedding ring now fits over my thumb and falls straight off my ring finger. When I'm done I will get them resized. I'm aiming for 8 stone officially but will then aim for another 2 pounds to give me a healthy BMI. So I've got 16lbs to go to then.

OP posts:
fourquenelles · 11/05/2019 11:19

Thanks Honeysuckle I'll take your advice and up to 1200. It just seems so counterinuitive but adding 2 x 100 calorie snacks will certainly make my day a happier one Grin.

It also sticks two fingers up at the "just eat less/calories in = weight loss" crowd. There's one on the fabulous secrets of overweight people thread who has missed the point of that thread spectacularly.

AnotherOtter · 12/05/2019 10:34

Lost 2.2lbs and now 139lbs. 102lbs lost in total and 8lbs to target. Lost 2.4lbs the week before. In both of those weeks I was eating at roughly maintenance or perhaps a slight 250 ish calorie deficit. I have bipolar disorder and one of my red flags for hypomania and mania is unexpected weight loss and I guess this what I am looking at. I have other symptoms as well like a relentless drive to exercise and do stuff and see people and talk talk talk. Part of me wants to push forward with it and get the extra weight off while it's effectively effortless (I can imagine how unfair that sounds!) but I also know how much trouble I get into when my mood is high. For example, I lost my driving licence again which has been incredibly inconvenient. So I should be mature and sensible and start pouring in the sedatives to dampen it all down. I certainly don't want another overuse injury; that was incredibly upsetting. Rest day today and will pull my activities right back. I am seeing my community psychiatric nurse at the end of the week so will try and have things sorted out by then otherwise will let her take it in hand.

Yell at me next week if I have a 'good' loss! Because that will mean I've not sorted out my mood. As much as I like seeing the scales tick down, think I've got to the stage where I need to see my health holistically. This is all so counter-intuitive.

How are you doing with the reset, BrokenWing? I have been there so many times. It's really hard. Sounds cliched but remember: doesn't matter how many times you fall; only how many times you get up again. That brings me a little comfort. Hope things have improved.

Welcome MrsTeaspoon. Sounds like you are making good progress! Sorry to hear of all the setbacks you have had Thanks

Welcome DrReed. You're in the right place for great support from people who really know what it's like. Definitely agree that it's harder to lose weight once you hit your forties. I found being consistent with exercise helps but I built that up very gradually.

Well done four on your loss and really very well done on joining the choir! That is excellent and so good that you had so much fun. I think a lot of us have denied ourselves things because we felt we were 'too fat' and it's bullshit. We deserve to have rich, full lives whatever our size. It's not all in our imaginations that the average person can be cruel to overweight people just because they are overweight. I have seen it over and over now I am an average sized person. I'm ranting so will stop! It's not fair or right.

Well done on your loss, cricket!

Nice to see you moonlight. How's the wee one? STS is perfectly respectable - there is no rush or competition.

I will finish this essay with a very well done to honey! Big milestone so congratulations! StarStarStar

cricketmum84 · 13/05/2019 06:24

Happy Monday everyone! Well I think my body has finally caught on to the vegetarian diet and I'm losing quickly now! I'm down into the 20s!! I haven't seen that number on the scale for at least 18 months.

Current weight: 20 stone 12lbs
Loss for May so far: 8lbs
Loss for 2019 so far: 4 stone 4 lbs

Plan for today is fruit for breakfast and snacks, salad for lunch with 10 olives and 40g of reduced fat Greek style cheese, I'm doing a roast chicken Nando's style for the family tonight so need to decide what to do for me? I'm thinking maybe a tofu curry with cauliflower rice?

Hope you all have happy and successful weeks ahead!

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 13/05/2019 12:51

I gained 4 pound this week and all because I had some pizza on thursday. FUCK OFF FAT!!

HoneysuckIejasmine · 13/05/2019 19:47

Well done cricket, and extra well done on catering for omnivore and vegetarian diets! You're nice, I just make DH and DD also eat free from dishes, CBA to cool twice! Tonight we had falafel wraps which were lovely and free from everything DS is allergic too. Except the wrap, he had a gluten free one Grin

Tali always give it a few days after a high fat or salt meal - you'll bloat and it won't be a true reflection of your effort.

Everyone new TAKE YOUR MEASUREMENTS! Even if you have to buy a tape measure. There will be times when the scale stays still for ages. In those times, your body is still changing shape. Knowing your measurements will reassure you it's still worth it.

OP posts:
cricketmum84 · 13/05/2019 21:24

They just wouldn't eat it @HoneysuckIejasmine if there was no meat. DS is getting a bit more adventurous and tried my veggie sausage tonight and wants to try my salt and pepper tofu later this week but DD and DH just would not touch a vegetarian meal. It's easier to just cook a meat meal for them and do an alternative for me!!

Tonight's was 3 Linda McCartney sausage (2.5 after DS had helped himself to some!) and a rocket and cherry tomato salad. Sounds an odd combination I know but I was too hot for cooked veg!

fourquenelles · 17/05/2019 11:58

Checking in after my Friday weigh in. Well I fell off the wagon with a huge bump for two das. Fortunately (!) I dont have much really highly calorific food in the house but I managed to binge on popcorn, lentil curls and Vegan ice cream. I was mindlessly eating and its boredom that does it for me so I have taken up a couple of evening things as well as the choir to keep me busy.

BUT I climbed back on the wagon, have a fridge full of lovely low cal food and am so happy that I didn't gain anything this week. So I stay where I was at 12 lbs lost. No loss but no gain.

Onwards and downwards!

HoneysuckIejasmine · 17/05/2019 19:38

Excellent four, well done! Sometimes life happens, and we just need to respond appropriately afterwards. That's what you've done, congratulations! 🌟

My weight in very spikey atm but think I've had a slight gain or STS. Been taking the extra drugs, which don't half increase my appetite, and my mood is less unstable though still pish. Very tired of it all.

Had another binge which I found very upsetting. They are escalating and getting larger and larger as time goes by. If it's true that binge eating works essentially like an addiction (the researchers can't agree) then that fits with how addictive behaviours escalate over time. My very low bar aim for May was to binge less than April when I had five days of multiple binges (worst was over 8000 in a day 😱😭). So far in May, I've had two discrete binges (one was 2500 and the worst was 3500, eaten in the space of an hour; don't even know how that's fucking possible). I'm posting numbers because I know people use the word binge in different ways and I always thought I was so abnormal and abhorrent for what a binge meant for me. I am not sure what to do. I imagine this sounds ridiculous but I don't talk about my eating issues with my nurse or doctors except very fleeting mentions. I find the whole subject so painful, I don't think I can bear to.

I second honey's advice to take your measurements. I do bust, waist and hips at the beginning of the month. Waist measurement is a better estimate of health than BMI according to the NHS. You can track waist and hip measurements in MFP (under the Progress tab). Some people track neck, upper arm and thigh too.

Well done for climbing back on the wagon, four. Interesting that you find boredom a trigger for binging. Great that you have identified that and taken steps to address it.

KOKO everyone and Thanks to those who are struggling.

moonlight1705 · 18/05/2019 08:05

Well another week of STS but it was my birthday yesterday so ended up with cake Shock

However I've jus found out I've got a new job, really excited about it but a big plus is the travel. I won't be driving for two hours a day but a nice 20 min walk each direction. This is really going to help my step count and getting more exercise.

I'm having to stop breastfeeding as my DD has gone on strike and will only take bottles so must try and be careful with my eating now.

moonlight1705 · 18/05/2019 08:08

Posted too soon, meant to say well done to four and another for keeping going. It sounds like you both have so much stress in life. The binges are interesting as I've never tried to calorie count one of mine, its scary how much I could consume.

Hi all i am a newbie to mumsnet so looking for some help regarding my weight. I am a mummy to 5, the oldest being 13 and youngest just about to turn 1. At 39 i find i have gained a shocking amount of weight (never really noticed before as i have been busy with the little ones). Looking to lose just shy of 5st. What makes it worse is i have a wedding in 2 weeks and have no idea what to wear without looking like mr blobby. I am a size 18/20 ,5ft 3 with a large bust and massive stomach. Please help!!!

BrokenWing · 18/05/2019 11:28

Welcome to MN @karenizzy13, if you post in the Style and Beauty topic the ladies there were very helpful when I was looking for a plus size outfit last year.

MadeleineMaxwell · 21/05/2019 09:55

Hello! Room for one more?

My GP told me two weeks ago that I am borderline pre-diabetic. I have PCOS so this was no big surprise, but it was a massive kick up the bum to actually finally lose the weight. I started at 128.8kg, I'm now 125.1kg.

My initial weight loss goal is 15kg, as apparently that's enough to turn the diabetes around in 3 out of 5 people, but it'll be a big difference either way.

I think for a normal BMI I'd need to lose around 55kg, and that's the long term goal, or at least somewhere much closer to that than now.

I don't do well on very restrictive diets, so I'm doing what's basically calorie counting, 1500-ish a day, with at least 8 portions of fruit and veg inspired by James Wong. Seems to be working so far.

I hit a massive wall on Friday, as that used to be takeaway day, but got through it with a chicken noodle stir fry! I'm going away on a weekend workshop this weekend, though, and I know there will be lots of treats around. How do you guys cope when you're not doing the catering?

vickibee · 21/05/2019 11:38

Well done Cricket Mum over 4 stone is impressive

I have loads to lose also, so far I have lost 28lbs since I saw my Gp on Valentine Day. but I am still have a BMI of 36.5.
I am using MFP to track my calories (1400 per day)and trying to do more exercise as I am sat at a desk all day. It seems to have worked so far. I don't want to be a skinny minny a size 14 would do. I am a stress eater and turn to food for comfort unfortunately. I am tee total so no calories there.

How do other people stay motivated when all you want is pizza?

mytittifersungtheirsong · 23/05/2019 07:55

Can I join? I weigh 17 stone and should weigh 13 (I'm tall). I am firmly obese and most of it now seems to sit around my tummy.

In addition I am addicted to food and literally have no self control. Yesterday after having a relatively healthy day apart from lots of snacking!! I ate 5 yea that's right 5 single twirls (had bought multipack).

Literally woken up feeling disgusted with myself, nothing in my wardrobe fits, I'm on an ssri which is what causes a lot of this weight gain plus my greediness of course.

I work flexible hours so could easily go to the gym but lack motivation.

I'm smart, I know about healthy living, tried lots of different diets. Main thing is my complete lack of will power after I put dd to bed. Single parent too!

So really just needed to put it out there that I'm obese and looking for some support hopefully in this thread.
