Last year I was gutted at being 13st.

I'm now 17st 2lbs.

I've done nothing but emotionally eat all year, fuelled by depression and anxiety. To the point where I've become mildly agoraphobic.

This has got to be the year I turn my life and poor eating habits around.

I don't know where to start.

I know the title is quite harsh but I've been telling myself it's not so bad.

But it is.

I'm fat. Very fat. And I need to correct it.

I know loads of people rate the low carb diet for weight falling off. But who keeps it off this way? And is it safe if you have a tendency already towards stomach ulcers and gallstones?

I'm planning on doing zero processed carbs or sugar (but fresh fruit is fine) but I will have brown rice, ryvita, sweet potatoes and baked potatoes, as I want something sustainable.

Is anyone else doing this? Just sensible, natural unprocessed foods from all the food groups?

TwllBach · 31/12/2018 16:47

OneStep that’s essentially what I’ll be doing but will probably keep to white rice until I’ve run down our stock! DS is gluten intolerant so we don’t really have bread in and DP has some medical issues so we largely stick to made-from-scratch meals anyway.

I have really dodgy hips/spine and DP can end up working away at a moments notice, so ideally I want w few different types of exercise that I can do from home too. My hips can’t take running five days a week, although I can manage a decent ‘hill’ walk with DS with/without the buggy as I live in snowdonia. I’ve found yoga on YouTube and some
Hip hop workouts, but I’d love something different to incorporate. Does anyone have any ideas/suggestions?

Its a trade off between fast weight loss and sustainable I find one step. I've done healthy eating and lost a stone slowly over four months. that was fine until I fell ill and put it all back on again.

Low carb/keto I know I can lose weight fast. I did it once for 8 months and was a rake at the end of it but god it was hard work. Although after a while I did kind of switch off to carbs. I remember being at a coffee and cake party and not being remotely bothered, I had learned to see cakes as though they were made out of plastic or something and had no desire to eat them. That one was good for a while, but like all the others it wasn't permanent.

Minglemangle · 31/12/2018 19:02

I am so annoyed with myself, tried every diet under the sun but always slip up if the kids stress me out/work is stressful or I just get really hungry and binge. One thing I am definitely doing is stopping alcohol as this makes the binging worse and when I don’t drink I don’t really miss it. I don’t really go out these days anyway! Other than that I am going to log everything and I am looking at these threads as inspiration.

KateGrey · 31/12/2018 19:16

I’m huge now. A size 22 and god knows what weight. I have to lose weight as I want to take my kids swimming and feel better about myself. Instead I’ve wasted so much of my life feeling sad about being fat. It can’t go on. In the short term I’m doing a low cal diet because I need to adjust my food habits.

OneStepMoreFun · 31/12/2018 19:17

Twll I like the 8-10 minute kettlebell workouts. It's easy to find time for them. They aren't so long that you injure a muscle and best of all, within days you feel stronger and fitter. (So why didn;t I keep going with them last time Hmm ?)

TwllBach · 31/12/2018 21:19

Ooh kettle bell sounds good!!

Donkdonkgoo · 31/12/2018 21:24

Walking is the answer.... I lost loads of weight by doing a 30 min fast walk each day and it was sooo easy and free.... and so good for my mental health and slept so many ch better..... big coat wellies umbrella is all you need. Combine this with just eating healthier tasty food... pileup n the veg add some spices and herbs to meals for the xtra taste.... don't buy in crisps and choc. Drink more water.... just little things can make a big difference. Good luck for 2019 and go for it!!

Donkdonkgoo · 31/12/2018 21:26

The couch to 5k app is free and you start off by walking. If I can do it anyone can it's so surprising how quickly you can get fit x

Donkdonkgoo · 31/12/2018 21:30

Please ladies don't spend daft money on daft fad diets!! Find an exercise you enjoy... a walk round a park is exercise and just eat healthier look on line for healthy recipes and introduce portion control!

OhioOhioOhio · 31/12/2018 21:34

The trick is to not diet

TrickyKid · 31/12/2018 21:37

Yep, 5ft 2 and 11st 2. It's depressing. I keep trying and then giving up. I need to do something about it for my health, never mind how I look. Up until a couple of years ago I had no problems with weight and I'm not good with not being able to eat what I want.

ifoundthebread · 31/12/2018 21:43

I'm currently 17st 7. After abusing myself from finding out I was pregnant with my daughter I have piled 6 stone on in 4 years. I'm at the point now where I look more pregnant than I did when I was actually pregnant. My goal for January is to do a bit exercise everyday, even if it's just go for lap of the local park walking the dog, stop eating a share size bag of sweets every night Infront of the TV and try drink more water. Small but achievable goals, I will reassess these goals at the end of January.

IjustbelieveinMe · 31/12/2018 21:45

13 stone 8, 5 foot 4.
I am doing high fat low carb no sugar or processed food allowed. Good luck everyone this is the year we do this!

MrDarcyWillBeMine · 31/12/2018 21:59

I was 16.7 stone at my heaviest and thought I would never shift it (was 19 and an 5’9)

I’m was down to 10.6 last summer and a skinny size 8-10!!! So it can be done!

Although I’m now back up to 11.2 (healthy eating actually made me gain weight 🤔) but need to fit into my size 8 wedding dress by June!

(It fits but not comfortably)

Notanotheruser111 · 31/12/2018 23:21

I won’t be weighing in but similarly to some of the above my goals are exercise everyday and to stop drinking coke everyday. I developed a really bad habit last year when I was anemic and so tired. I’m using a stationary bike aiming to get to 30 mins a day currently can do 20 and then I exhausted.

I have no idea how to do a click link but here goes this podcast ep was really interesting in regards to diets

www.abc.net.au/radio/programs/nightlife/from-atkins-to-paleo-everything-you-need-to-know-about-diets/10603330

chalkyc2 · 01/01/2019 08:31

First day of a new year and I think I've found my people! I'm 17.5 stone and it is not good! I don't really feel like i hugely overeat, I don't buy chocolate bars etc, but I don't restrict myself and have a definite tendency to put on weight (thanks mum for the great genes).

So I'm going to exercise, and cut out sweet stuff and booze for a start, and watch portion sizes. 6 years ago I lost 30kg - but it has all come back on (+ more). I have 2 boys who like to run and cycle and ski - and I like to do these things too - but soon I'll be too fat to and I'm already embarrassed by myself.

KateGrey · 01/01/2019 08:44

Awesome thread and somewhere to be accountable. I think my issue is binge eating. I eat healthily and then I binge and my poor body doesn’t have a clue what is going on.

Can I join too 👋🏻

I am 17st 3lb this morning. Have charged my Fitbit and aiming to do at least 10k steps a day. I have an old cross trainer that I want to use 3 times a week.

Snacking, large portions, being lazy is my problem. I have 4 children under 8 and breastfeeding my 8 month old so life is hectic but really want to make a change.

I got my Fitbit in July, used it for a few weeks and lost focus during the summer holidays. It says I have lost 10 pounds since I set it up, bit rubbish for 6 months!!

I am aiming to lose 7lb by the end of the month and do small goals as it’s a bit daunting to say I need to lose 4/5 stone.

I need to make a healthy change for me and my children.

FatGirlWithChocolate · 01/01/2019 09:14

Op, you could be me. I lost a grand total of 5 and a half stone..went from being in a size 28 in some stuff to being able to get into a 16. I'm now a size 22/24 and have regained almost all my weight. I'm bloody angry at myself but completely lacking in the oomph to go through it all again. I've no idea what I will do, but I need to do it, and soon.

Beaverhausen · 01/01/2019 09:18

I am fat but won't be going on a diet. I am just going to change my eating habits. First I am going to cut out bread.

Babygrey7 · 01/01/2019 09:25

For me it helps to focus on eating better, not less.

I love veg soups, Pret a manger veg box (vegan salad = yum, zesty dressing so tasty) sweet potato mash, fresh fruit and muesli with yoghurt, avocado and tomato salad with panfried cajun spiced salmon, home made curries... all much nicer than McD or Pringles really

You can't start from a point of depriving yourself. Instead start from a point of treating yourself to better, tasty, food

Otherwise January is just sad and grim...

AnnAbbieLian · 01/01/2019 09:32

I’m extremely fat. I’ve failed to stick to all the plans I came up with before. This time my new year resolutions are simply:

  1. Don’t eat when not hungry.
  2. Eat slowly.
  3. Eat vegetables every day (because sadly I think every meal is too ambitious for me right now...)
poloves · 01/01/2019 09:59

I'm going to do 16:8. Worked really well before I met my husband and lost all routine! I'm now massive (but had a baby early last year) and I'm ready to start it again!
