16:8 anyone?

kaytee87 · 16/08/2018 07:31

I've restricted myself to eating between 12pm-8pm, so 2 meals and an evening hot chocolate. Just started this week and have lost 4lbs so far Smile
Aiming to loose another 10lbs by the end of September - would anyone like to join me?

I’d love to.

I did this very successfully between about March/April/may time and lost 2 stones, dropped 2-3 dress sizes.

Went on holiday in June and got out the habit and am struggling to get back into it. Would like to lose another 10-15lbs.

NicoAndTheNiners · 16/08/2018 07:49

Currently having a coffee with a dash of milk which I know isn’t technically allowed but I did this during the time I lost weight previously so if it still worked then, I’m hoping it will again. Hoping to last till 12 before actual food, will see....may need to build up to this! 😁

Kingkiller · 16/08/2018 07:51

I've just started this and am eating between 12 and 8 too. Are you restricting what you eat in any other way, or just timing?

Kingkiller · 16/08/2018 07:53

Oh I'm having a cup of tea with semi-skimmed milk in the morning too. I guess I could change to green tea if necessary but I'd really miss my usual morning proper cup of tea!

kaytee87 · 16/08/2018 07:53

@NicoAndTheNiners that's amazing! I'd love to lose 2 stone in total but would be happy to start with 1.
I have tea with milk in the morning too, I couldn't last without it.
I'm going to toddlers this morning with my 2yo and they offer toast and biscuits round at 10.30 😖 that's going to be difficult!

I'm wanting to lose about a stone. Nico - did you really lose all that weight just through 16:8?! That's really encouraging - well done you!

kaytee87 · 16/08/2018 07:55

@Kingkiller I'm not consciously restricting what I'm eating but I have eaten more healthily this week. I think if I tell myself I'm not allowed something I'll want it more. I'm having a hot chocolate once my ds goes to bed to stop me wanting chocolate.

NicoAndTheNiners · 16/08/2018 07:56

When I did it it was just a timing thing I changed. Didn’t calorie count as well . Think I did cut down on chocolate a bit but still ate it. Maybe naturally you start eating a bit healthier because you think if you’re doing it you want results?

I remember finding it hard at first but your body gets used to it. One of my issues is going to the gym a lot. I can’t do it at weekends as I do 2back to back morning gym classes and would pass out without food.

In the evenings I have to eat about 5pm as evening gym classes start at 6pm and then if I’m not home till 7:30pm it’s too late to eat. So I ended up doing 19:5 rather than 16:8!

beingsunny · 16/08/2018 07:56

Are you restricting calories? If so how many are you allowing, I know this is individual but due to thyroid issues mine are recommended at 1200 a day 😩

NicoAndTheNiners · 16/08/2018 07:57

And I’ve always done the gym classes so don’t think the exercise contributed to the weight loss.

kaytee87 · 16/08/2018 08:05

@beingsunny I'm not counting calories but I estimate I've not had any more than 1200 per day. I don't feel particularly hungry. Only at odd times but it's manageable with a big drink of water usually.

OP posts:
beingsunny · 16/08/2018 08:08

@kaytee87 thanks for the response, I'm doing the same and drinking litres of water and tea every time I feel hungry. It's day four now and I feel 'thinner' but don't have any scales so am going by my clothes. I've gained around 15 kilos in the last twelve month and summers is looming!
When I reach for snacks I remind myself I need to go bikini shopping really soon

kaytee87 · 16/08/2018 08:15

@beingsunny I've gained a stone since breaking my ankle 8months ago Sad I had previous to that lost 3 stone of pregnancy weight so I was really disheartened to see the scales jump back up.
I'm due a second operation on my ankle in the next couple of months so want to lose as much as possible before that. We're also planning to ttc in January so want to be as slim as possible before getting pregnant (and ruining all my hard work!)

What day shall we make weigh in day folks? I've been weighing myself daily this week but I know it should really just be once a week.

Friday? Before the weekend!

FATEdestiny · 16/08/2018 08:35

Are you restricting what you eat in any other way, or just timing?

There are benefits to proper fasting (is in only water or unsweetened black tea/coffee for the 16 hours) but most doing 16:8 still have things like milk or sweetened hot drinks in their "fast", so it's not a true fast.

There is still benefits though, even without a proper fast. That comes down to basic calorie deficit.

If you only eat between 12-8pm, then three key things happen:

(1) You miss breakfast. Not eating a meal means consuming fewer calories - so bigger calorie deficit.

(2) You don't snack during the evening. Not eating (probably high calorie, sweet food) at night means consuming fewer calories - so bigger calorie deficit.

(3) You should hopefully be thinking more about what you do eat, given you are trying to lose weight. So in time (and possibly a bit of self-education for some people), you should start thinking about healthy eating at the two meals you do eat, eating fewer calories overall - so bigger calorie deficit.

It all comes down to calorie deficit at the end of the day.

It doesn't matter how you decide to do it. 8/16 intermittent fasting is as good a way as any. You just have to ensure that you consume fewer calories than you use to lose weight.

kaytee87 · 16/08/2018 08:41

Sounds good @NicoAndTheNiners I don't imagine I'll lose any more than the 4lbs I've already lost by Friday but you never know!

OP posts:
NicoAndTheNiners · 16/08/2018 08:48

No, not sure I will lose anything by tomorrow but hopefully by next Friday I might have! [Smile]

Kingkiller · 16/08/2018 08:49

FATE - yy to all that. But I'm thinking it would be easy to eat more during the day because you'd missed breakfast. Partly because you'd be hungrier, but also because psychologically you might feel that you'd 'done your bit' by skipping breakfast and therefore be a bit more indulgent with what you eat at other meals. Obviously I'm going to try not to allow that to happen, but we'll see!

So far I'm not finding it hard to skip breakfast, but I do feel like I'm wanting to make up for it a bit at lunch time!

MrPebbles · 16/08/2018 08:58

I'm in!! I've been doing this loosely for a while but not really taken it seriously enough. My other half has started doing it and it's working for him. I do feel so much better when I'm following it

I'm a black coffee drinker anyway, but my water intake is awful. And I love a skinny cappuccino in the morning. Chocolate at night. Gah!!!! Habits to break!

My goal is to lose half a stone. Which might not seem like lots but I'm only 5ft 2 and have a healthy BMI so losing weight takes fooooorrrree eerrr!!

Kingkiller · 16/08/2018 09:38

I guess I'm lucky in one respect- I've never been one for evening snacking. I never eat anything after my evening meal. I guess the occasional beer or glass of wine will have to go though (or have it with dinner).

NicoAndTheNiners · 16/08/2018 10:22

Tummy is rumbling....seem to remember from last time that mid morning is worse and then the hunger passes. Have had a big glass of water.

My PT once said to me about exercising that I have to learn to love the ache when squatting and I think being a bit hungry is like this. Mind over matter, you have to get used to feeling a little bit hungry because in modern society we’re not used to it and panic and eat at the first sign but it’s actually not a bad thing in moderation.

JacNaylor · 16/08/2018 10:40

Can I join in? I've got loads to loose but I think that this would be a good way to start as I'm conscious that I often graze constantly and don't give my body enough of a rest between foods.

Kingkiller · 16/08/2018 11:49

Yes you definitely need to learn to embrace the hunger . I do feel really hungry by lunch time, but less urgently so than if I'd had a sugary, carby breakfast - that always sets me off on a high/low blood sugar rollercoaster that makes me unable to resist the biscuit tin. I definitely need to drink more water.

My other hope for the 16:8 is that it will keep my blood pressure down (it's supposed to be good for that, apparently). I've been on bp meds for 10 years. I'm only borderline for needing them, but it would be nice not to!

kaytee87 · 16/08/2018 14:59

Hello newcomers!
I had a ham wrap at 12.15 and that's it, not hungry at all. Dinner will be sausage, mash and veg at 5pm then hot chocolate 7.30.

I've just had my operation confirmed for Friday 24th, will try not to let it mess my diet up but it's under GA with a 2 week recovery time I think so might be hard.
