Anyone up for a current thread? I've had a good search and couldn't find anything recent!

I've got the book/cd and am downloading the app too. I'll start tonight.

I've never done this kind of thing before but am very open to it working :)

Still here. I'm spending time trying to work out the foods that I really like and want to eat and when to eat them. I'm peeling back the layers built up over years of diets and eating plans that have caused my dysfunctional habits and thinking. I like the idea of my own snackbox Dotty.
I'm not yet listening to the cd - I downloaded it yesterday. We have builders at the house doing an extension so it's a bit hard to shut myself off with it

How's everyone doing?
What's the beyond choc books like?

Belonger · 12/04/2018 11:49

So great to find someone else who has read When Women Stop Hating Their Bodies, I love it!

I can't remember where but I once read something very reassuring about emotional eating. It basically said that food and eating will always have an emotional element, which made emergency relax a lot! Since forever people have shared meals to celebrate, Mark important festivals or rituals, to demonstrate status, love etc. So it's unrealistic to expect never to eat because of feelings other than hunger.

I guess it's finding a balance that we're happy with, learning to feel and deal with some of the feelings that we might eat to stuff down, but not berate ourselves for still linking food and emotions.

Belonger · 12/04/2018 11:50

Made emergency? Oops. 'Made me relax'

Dottydotts · 12/04/2018 12:09

Hi Belonger . It is a good book isn't it (When women stop hating their bodies). Have you read their first book, "Overcoming Overeating ". It was groundbreaking for me.

Belonger · 12/04/2018 12:16

I don't think so. I've read some geneen roth, and susie orbach had a big impression on me back in the day.

But we live in such a toxic food culture, its just bloody difficult to go against the grain

gaggiagirl · 13/04/2018 07:52

Some excellent reading suggestions here thank you.

I have never considered myself am emotional eater. I didn't think that applied to me. Yesterday however I had a very stressful evening (rouge sat nav/traffic jam/child seat escapee/no parking/broken phone/car overheating)
And the first thing I wanted to 'fix' everything was a donut. I felt entitled to one.
I didn't have one though.

MaggieMay23 · 13/04/2018 16:02

Hi all
Well, I don't know what got into me last night - I ate 11 - yes 11 squares of dark chocolate- Aldi brand. The upshot was that I then couldn't sleep!! A sugar overload or something. I feel awful today
What was going on??
I've a few theories:

  1. we had take out fish chips for tea and they weren't that nice so I only ate about half of them - so I felt a bit deprived of a nice dinner and made up for with chocolate later on
  2. I'm rebelling against the thought of a diet and overeating just in case I feel deprived etc. I know PMk isn't a diet but the diet mentality is so ingrained in me

Any ideas etc anyone?

Belonger · 13/04/2018 19:13

Maybe you could not worry so much about the why, and instead just really focus on how it felt, when you couldn't sleep etc? Like, let your body really tell you how it feels to eat that chocolate at that time of day, rather than letting your mind take over with whys and theories and what have you? Its just something I've noticed for myself, that my mind barges in and says 'let me tell you all about what's wrong with you', but it doesn't help! When I listen to my body instead with as much kindness as I can, it seems to create more peace.

gaggiagirl · 13/04/2018 19:49

Maggie I think I rubbish 'treat' meal can be so disappointing its no wonder you reached for the chocolate.

MaggieMay23 · 13/04/2018 20:47

Thanks @gaggiagirl and @Belonger you're both right - I'll learn and hopefully get stronger at this

Dottydotts · 13/04/2018 23:50

Maggie mindful eating is not a diet (as you know Smile) so 11 squares of chocolate doesn't matter. Why did you count them? Just wondering. When you eat don't count how many , just think if you have had enough. If you have eaten 20 squares, it doesn't matter, as long as you enjoyed and wanted them. If you eat without realising , just let it go and start again next time you eat .

gaggiagirl · 14/04/2018 09:58

If anyone is using the app, I had asked how it works once the first week is completed.
Im on day 10 now. It just rolls on counting the days and you get a random session every morning. So all of the first weeks sessions mixed up again.
I. Had the self sabotage session again this morning.

Liz38 · 14/04/2018 17:27

I bought the book on kindle a while back and it made total sense and i tried for a bit and then I didn't really try... so I've bought the physical book and the cds and I'm going to give it a really good go! I know I'm am emotional eater, I'm not massively overweight but I'd feel better with a bit of weight off and a bit more of me being in control of the eating. I know my husband will struggle with me doing it though so I'll end up trying to do it in secret and I'm not sure that's a good plan! It's so good to hear how well it's worked for other people.

Dottydotts · 14/04/2018 20:59

Liz Hi Smile and Welcome. May I ask why your husband will find you doing this difficult?

Liz38 · 16/04/2018 20:40

Hi Dotty he's very wary of anything that can be considered a diet (a family member was anorexic and scarred them all, understandably). I've explained that it's the antithesis of a diet so we'll see how that goes. He's also concerned about hypnotism for religious reasons, he's generally resistant to anything he feels is a bit woo. If it works for me he'll be fine, but he worries. It's coming from a good place!

Off to listen to the CD now for the first time...

Dottydotts · 16/04/2018 21:14

Liz I have disordered eating and am wary of situations and things that can trigger me to want to go on a diet. Diets are about me feeling that I'm not good enough and ugly so I try and recognise when I'm feeling like this. The hypnosis is not necessary, it's just as effective to read the books and understand the principles. I'm reading Beyond Chocolate at the moment which is similar but from two sisters personal experiences with dieting. I keep a stash of these type of books for when I need to support myself more.

Liz38 · 16/04/2018 21:27

Dotty Let me know how that chocolate reading goes. I hope it's not like Chocolat which drives me to the chocolate cupboard immediately! I have a definite chocolate dependency, it's my self medication for any form of emotional or stress reaction and I'm hoping this will help me manage that better. Good luck to you.

Dottydotts · 16/04/2018 21:48

Thanks Liz. As long as I stick to "not dieting " I'm good. How did you get on with the hypnosis?

Liz38 · 17/04/2018 21:06

2nd listen tonight. I've no idea whether it's sinking in when my mind wanders off! I slept well last night and woke up bright and full of energy this morning which isn't normal although not unheard of, I'd like to attribute that to the hypnosis. How are you doing?

Dottydotts · 17/04/2018 21:16

Even if you fall asleep or mind wanders it still goes in

gaggiagirl · 18/04/2018 14:08

The hypnosis is fabulous. I've never been 'awake' to hear the end... Yet I wake up at the end... 😲 It's fantastic really.
Im really enjoying following this plan. Overeating for no reason and treating myself most days to huge amounts of food is a thing of the past for me now. I'm two weeks in and I feel so much better.

Dottydotts · 18/04/2018 20:11

O yay!! gaggi

Liz38 · 20/04/2018 15:36

Love it gaggia! You must be so pleased ☺ 5 days in and I think there's a difference happening for me.
