The diet begins Boxing Day! Lose weight, stay happy

So after a really crap year where I had a severe depressive episode, I’ve ended up mentally much healthier but heavier due to my medication (mirtzapine). Oh, and my obscene addiction to sugar!! I’m finally in a place where I feel I can tackle my weight gain. Having braved the scales yesterday I weighed in at 10st 7lb - I was 9st in April, so quite a gain. I’m 5ft 3 and this gives me a BMI of 26 (so in the overweight category!)

Target weight is 8st 7lb so want to lose 2st. First mini goal is 10st by end of January.

I plan to follow a HFLC diet as this should help me tackle my sugar additiction once and for all. I have terrible problems with blood sugar and lots of people say this clears up on the diet. Am going to use India Knights idiot proof diet book after a recommendation here.

I can’t wait til next year so I have 4 more days to wallow in Christmas biscuits then Boxing Day will start my diet! We have a family meal out that day which could be interesting...I’m not planning to mention it in RL so will use this as a diary. Please feel free to post, join in, give support (flowers emojis rather than biscuits please or I may end up nibbling on my iPad) etc.

May I join properly on 2 Jan? It’s DH’s birthday on New Year’s Day so there will be cake.

I’m 5’2” and too scared to weigh. My plan is MFP, aiming for 1200 calories, in 3 meals with no snacks. I’ve had a stinking cold over Christmas so haven’t had as much of an appetite as usual - and alcohol has just dehydrated me so I haven’t drunk with my usual abandon either. I’m going to do dry January as well.

biscuitbasket · 29/12/2017 18:39

Managed 900 calories yesterday, today I'm a bit over at 1340, but the chocolate is calling me!

I will attempt to be strong and have a bath instead...

DownstairsMixUp · 29/12/2017 19:28

I’m doing ok, averaging about 1400-1500 cals a day but exercising every day, if I don’t exercise I try stick between 1200-1300. The cupboard is full of chocolate though...Shock

biscuitbasket · 29/12/2017 19:29

The cupboards full of chocolate are s nightmare! I share your pain...

HuunGerReee · 29/12/2017 21:01

Ok so I've buggered up already!

So I shall start again and change tactic, meal replacement shakes just made me hungry so I scoffed and now dh is bringing home McDonald's! Grin

Will start following sw from home as being too strict is setting me up for a failure and that way I can make sure I don't get hungry.

Still annoyed I slipped on day 2 though!

HattietheManatee · 29/12/2017 21:36

Evening all! Lovely to log on and see so many posts. Day 4, did majorly stressful trip to one of the South Ken museums which involved queues and full on lying on the floor for ten minutes in a really busy place tantrums. DS said what a lovely day when we got out and I could have easily swigged half a bottle of gin in response!

Anyway, today have had
B scrambled eggs with smoked salmon
Decaf coffee with cream
L selection sliced meat and cheeses
S: handful of smoked nuts
D: smoked fish pan fried with chorizo and cream, with green beans (which may have been cheating but I’d run out of spinach and really wanted some veg!)
Plus some desert nuts - pecans and hazelnuts

I’ve lost the sodding diet book so currently free styling. It could all go very wrong...

@HuunGerReee sounds like it wasn’t a slip, more of a realisation. Great to hear you’ll be back on the wagon tomorrow with a new set of dieting tactics.

@biscuitbasket hope that a bath did the trick! I told OH to hurry up and eat the chuffing home made biscuits before they went off this evening! I was more concerned about me eating them out of pity as I hate ‘waste’.

@HippoPotOMoose I hear you! My meds combined with my overeating have got me here too. It was also making my anxiety worse as I was worried about my increasing girth. I had to give myself permission to gain weight with the mantra ‘better fat than dead’ as my depression was so bad. It’s only now feeling well enough to tackle the weight gain.

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar welcome, and see you back on the 2nd. Enjoy that cake!

@PrincessPlod welcome and best of luck with your mini goal! What approach will you be taking?

OP posts:
HattietheManatee · 29/12/2017 22:00

@Butternutissquashed hooray, you’ve made it out from under the chocs! Best of luck with the park run tomorrow morning. I think I have carb flu and am currently in bed with a hot water bottle. Can’t wait for this to pass so can start exercising!

@Hippywannabee - welcome, and best of luck - am sure the holiday will act as a great incentive! Where are you off to? We have about the same weeks to our next holiday too - but it’s to Finland so there’s no risk of exposing the jelly belly there Grin

@supersop60 - welcome! Be interesting to know how you reduce your sugar intake. I’m going for a total exclusion including fruit which is easier than I thought. I plan to introduce some lower carb fruit like berries and melon later on though. It’s the thought of that which is keeping me strict!

@DownstairsMixUp - of course you can join, welcome! Sounds like a very sensible approach and look forward to following your progress. I’ll be taking a similar approach to booze - spirits and diet tonic... Gin

@Pavonia, Huun is right, TOTM can definitely add a few lbs on the scale. Hope you had a lovely dinner out.

@Bonkersblond thanks for the encouragement! Although my evening readings aren’t that much different... I’ll stick to the morning ones and hopefully they will keep going down. Great diet tips too, totally agree that standing up to eat out the fridge is NOT a good idea Blush. Having a Fitbit competition with the kids sounds like a great idea. I need to dust mine off and get back in the 10k minimum.

@SageYourResoluteOracle horny not scrawny Grin that will have to be the title for the next thread (an extra incentive for me to keep posting!) Sounds like your PT was great - I had a one hour session with one and wasn’t that impressed, I won it but had it been great I would have thought about paying for the follow ups. And you could win BGT with that crisp bag trick Grin. I hope to one day have a better idea of what my needs are in terms of nutrition, and be able to use MFP properly. I’m learning a lot so hopefully will get there in the end.

Hippywannabe · 29/12/2017 22:18

@HattietheManatee, ours is to Madeira. I used to life in Finland! Where are you going?
Foodwise today after the gateau- 4 crackerbread and 1 oz of blue cheese for lunch followed by a 4 egg omelette with 2 oz of stilton for dinner.
My recently removed gallbladder is haunting me after such a rich dinner though, sob.

SageYourResoluteOracle · 29/12/2017 22:29

LOVE this thread and it would be a great honour if Scrawny Not Horny was to be the title for thread number 2!

Everyone is doing brilliantly I think. Tomorrow is a brand new day.

Today I’ve power walked 8 miles with a friend!! 4 miles out, Greek salad and kale smoothie in a cafe and 4 miles back. 3 hours of exercise! This equated to 700 odd calories burned so I’ve eaten around 2000 in total which means I’ve used some of the additional ones I’ve earned through exercise but not all of them. I’m pooped though and will skip park run tomorrow as my legs are really stiff now!

I’m starting to get in the groove again of planning what I’m going to eat the next day the evening before and logging it all on MFP so I know what’s what. It is tricky at this time of year though as there’s little routine, lots of outings etc but at least we’ll all have started to lay down good habits before January 1st rather than expecting perfection of ourselves on January the 1st- that never works! Night all!

Pavonia · 29/12/2017 23:38

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I had a lovely dinner out this evening and I'm quite excited to be starting the diet. I'm going to have to be strict with myself as I know I need to see good results to maintain enthusiasm.

PinkHeart5914 · 30/12/2017 00:11

Hello all, hope your all well 😃

Today for me has been ok (ish)

Breakfast porridge. Black coffee
I did then have a latte after we registered the new baby
Lunch was 2 very mini sausage rolls & salad bits ( we need a food shop, we have one coming tomorrow)
Dinner was lemon chicken breast grilled with sweet potato fries ( only a few) and peas
I have also had a glass of wine and a baileys tonight, I just couldn’t resist.

It is so hard with all the Christmas chocolates & biscuits we have around I can hear them calling me when I am up breastfeeding in the night but I shall try and resist.......

LadyWobbleton · 30/12/2017 04:51

(Huungereee namechanged)

Glad I'm starting sw as I've been up since 2.15 with poorly dd and would have struggled with being hungry too!

Loving seeing the food diaries too, will post mine when it's looking a bit healthier!

HippoPotOMoose · 30/12/2017 09:59

Right new regime starts today! I'm feeling positive and ready, so far so good 1 cup of green tea and 1 cup of peppermint tea. I know it's only 10 o'clock but baby steps.

I'm just trying to work out how to best tackle it, I really don't want to cut stuff out as then I'll crave them. Lots to think about...

DownstairsMixUp · 30/12/2017 10:36

Glad I am not the only one struggling to resist the Christmas chocolate though! What’s everyone’s plans for New Year’s Eve tomorrow?

I am liking seeing the menu plans to, it gives me some help! Anyone else using their Fitbit?

Today’s menu plan is

Breakfast: two whole meal toast with philly

Lunch: halloumi and spinach wrap with plain yoghurt dressing. Small yoghurt with blueberries.

Dinner: meatballs and wholemeal pasta.

Snacks: bit of fruit, maybe some skinny popcorn and Diet Coke with plenty of water

Butternutissquashed · 30/12/2017 12:37

Love reading how everyone is doing. Well done all!!! I like reading what everyone is eating as it gives me ideas and I'm easily bored....
parkrun this morning was the incentive that I needed. Wow, it was so much harder than this time last year when I was over a stone lighter! So, SW from tomorrow, regular running and checking in here, I'm determined to shift this weight now!

HattietheManatee · 30/12/2017 19:25

@Hippywannabe we’re staying in Hyvinkaa, about an hour outside Helsinki. Please let me know any tips - we want to check out Helsinki city museum (geek) and also the moomin museum (double geek) but apart from that have no plans! Yikes, must be tough with no gall bladder.

@SageYourResoluteOracle the honour will be all mine Grin it feels like a million years away until I’ll have to make that tough choice between horny or scrawny. Or arse vs face. Currently it’s chunky vs funky - I’ve put the weight on and realised that I need to make more effort in my appearance. Bigger dresses and smaller pants helped me feel ok about myself over the last month or so but at my rate of weight gain I’ll be busting the new outfits and be well and truly a size 14. Great effort on the long walk - I love walking but with ankle biters it’s more a case of going nowhere slowly.

@Pavonia - yay, you’re excited! That’s a really good sign, that enthusiasm will carry you through the toughest bits (she says with blind optimism).

@PinkHeart5914 you stayed away from the Christmas biscuits - good job!

@LadyWobbleton eek, hope DD is better soon. Look forward to seeing your food diary when you’re ready.

@HippoPotOMoose - is it wrong that I keep writing HippoPotOMousse? Grin glad to see you back and hope you find a way that works for you. Can you build in small treats to the plan? I must admit I am shocked that my sugar cravings have been so easy to manage on the low carb high fat diet. I thought I would be sobbing by the biscuit tin but actually don’t fancy one at all. Maybe because I’m so terrified that with all the fat I’m eating I would literally pop into a lard ball on legs if I add carbs in.

@DownstairsMixUp I’ve dug my Fitbit out and will charge it tonight. I literally have no plans for NYE, think will stay off the booze and try to get an early night which OH is a bit miffed about. But I’m exhausted so need to catch up ready for —coping with two insane kids on my own on Tuesday— work on Wednesday. Hope you have more exciting plans than me! I did buy slim tonic so can go for a gin and slim at a push... although would like to do the two weeks strict on this diet if poss before —boozing— having a tipple again.

@Butternutissquashed - well done on the park run, and great to hear your determination!

Today did the food shop which cost £110 (and it was Lidl!) - we normally —spend— aim for £350 a month for all 5 of us, so hoping this might see us through two weeks at a stretch.

I found the diet book in the boot and don’t think the green beans were cheating.
However I accidentally ate half a grape when clearing out the fridge Confused and bought some stuffed peppers which I thought were low carb then realised I had picked up a different pack which were 9.7g of carbs per 100g. Damn you pepperdews. I ate two before I realised, hopefully that won’t throw the scales. Although the scales aren’t going anywhere at the moment.

B: two slices of smoked salmon with cream cheese
S: Decaf coffee with cream, small handful smoked nuts
L: smoked fish and chorizo leftovers with creamed spinach and two stuffed pepperdew
S: decaf coffee with cream and small handful of olives

Dinner is meant to be fake shepherds pie with cauliflower mash but let’s see if I have the energy to make it... Definitely suffering from carb flu Sad

I feel your pain, I have made the same pledge. I stumbled across this little gem on Amazon Kindle today, www.amazon.co.uk/Inevitable-helpful-guide-achieving-coffee-ebook/dp/B078JJJ7FH/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=will+melrose&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1514666310&sr=8-1

Thought I would I pick it up as a starter for 2018, what harm can it do?, and for a couple of pounds must be worth a try. A lot of it hit home with me, and really made sense and none of the usual guff and patronising rubbish. Good Luck in your quest, sure be be awesome.

biscuitbasket · 30/12/2017 21:52

Hi all, today was an epic failure on the sugar front, had some sad news and spent the day feeling sorry for myself and eating up the xmas sugar supplies!

Tomorrow is another day though, will jump back on the sugar free wagon and it should be easier now all the choc is gone!

Well done everyone with more willpower than me!

Hippywannabe · 30/12/2017 22:19

Breakfast- 3 crackerbread with 1 oz blue cheese
Lunch- I can't remember but I do remember it was around 340 calories! Damn you, menopausal memory!
Snack-handful of twiglets
Dinner-bread roll with stilton ( I have learned that crusty white rolls do not sit well with me now-sigh...)

HippoPotOMoose · 31/12/2017 08:10

I'm logging my food on my Fitbit app and oh dear yesterday was a disaster. Never mind today is a new day...

Bonkersblond · 31/12/2017 09:37

Epic fail yesterday, dinner at the in laws, then tonight we are out, I’m sure because of these events it made me think one chocolate won’t hurt which led to anotherBlush actually looking forward to a quiet week next week and I have found a SW group for Tuesday eve, so I’m going as think I need a double pronged attack, the dreaded weekly weigh in and you lovely lot on here. Today I will try to be good but have Thai meal this eve. Happy New Year everyone, hopefully we’ll all meet our weight goals and feel better for it.

PinkHeart5914 · 31/12/2017 11:35
