Weight loss by being kind to ourselves? *title edited by MNHQ*

Holidays over. I have had my body weight in ice-creams, chips, pasties, burgers etc and though we walked about 5-10 miles most days, I'm heaviest ever.

I know I am useless at diets - they make me dizzy and weak and grumpy.

Does anyone fancy trying to lose weight with a shift of mindset? Doing loads of treat-like things that aren't food based. Eating really healthy foods we also happen to love, Being nice to ourselves mentally, physically, emotionally and socially etc. Taking exercise because it's good self care etc?

If anyone wants to try this, join in here for chat.

Today I walked back from shops with (superfit and skinny) DS1. 3 miles. This afternoon, I'm going for a walk with DS2. Going to have some salad for lunch now because I like salad, not because it's rabbit food.

Anyone else?

Hi, thought I'd check in. Trying to change my mindset to eating healthy food being kind to yourself, think I'm getting there. Went out last night and allowed myself one alcoholic drink n the condition that I didn't snack in the afternoon , it worked. Went to a restaura called Balls &a Company and ate some begin meatballs which had kale and avocado the n them and a brocolli side dish, it was lush. Also treated myself to an anti aging day cream

Thisisatemporaryname101 · 01/09/2017 21:06

Ok today I've had poached egg on toast. Tuna jacket and salad and homemade chicken biryani which I really enjoyed making.

WishingCarrot · 01/09/2017 21:21

I've eaten reasonably well today - except for dinner. I had a Thai takeaway inc starter 🙈🙈 and a coke in the restaurant as I was waiting to collect it.

But, on the plus side I've cut right down on my evening sofa grazing 😁😇

Thisisatemporaryname101 · 01/09/2017 21:56

Thai is pretty healthy!

BillywigSting · 01/09/2017 22:43

Today was pretty good, until dp suggested takeaway pizza for tea! I did stop eating once I was full though (two slices)

Otherwise peanut butter on toast for breakfast and a chicken wrap for lunch with a bit of swimming with my friend and our kids thrown in for good measure.

This is all so much easier when ds is in school and I actually have time to cook!

WishingCarrot · 01/09/2017 22:54

temporary not the amount I ate BlushWink

trilbydoll · 01/09/2017 23:21

Placemarking. 5'3 and a lot closer to 11st than I'm prepared to admit, I'm not weighing myself because I don't want to know for sure. Loving the idea of filling in the dangerous 9pm snack time.

Octopus37 · 02/09/2017 08:41

I wasn't going to weigh myself but ending up doing this morning. I am over the moon cause I have lost 5 pounds this week, know it is going to slow down now, but determined it is going to spur me on rather than making me think I can slack off. Now have 16 pounds to lose rather than 21, which is starting to sound a bit more manageable.

applejack18 · 02/09/2017 09:09

Octopus congrats on the 5 pounds loss

My weight today sat is 11.0.0 (5ft2)

Last five days haven't been too bad but I've had a cold so haven't felt up to exercise or cooking and that's ok because I'm not going to beat myself up. Looking forward to the kids returning to school and return to routine. I've gained half a stone this summer.

whowouldknow · 02/09/2017 09:48

This is perfect! I am 12.6st and 5.5. I want a stone and 1/2 off before a big trip at Christmas!

I'm not too bad with exercise altho can always do more-need to sort out snacking and weekend celebrations Gin

Masonbee · 02/09/2017 11:30

Don't know where my post went Confused

I am the same as my starting weight 12st5lb but no huge surprise as I had a (free!) three course dinner at work event yesterday and I am baking a cake for a birthday party later today so lots of potentially unhealthy choices...

But I have been looking up delicious healthy recipes for next week and started the day with porridge and parkrun, both of which were lovely!

We'll done on your loss octopus!
Good luck everyone

WishingCarrot · 02/09/2017 14:13

Well done Octopus.

I took my ds to a trampoline park earlier. I'm exhausted! Hoping I've lost a couple of pound jumping Grin

millifiori · 02/09/2017 23:06

Hello everyone - come in and check your start weight here today/tomorrow/Monday.

Octopus that's brilliant. Well done.

I am down 2lb to 11 st 5lbs, which I'm very happy about as a start

CHALLENGE OF THE WEEK: drink 2L water a day (still water ideally as apparently the fizzy stuff can stimulate grehlin which is a hinger activator in the stomach.)INfuse it with mint, orange, cucumber, strawberries etc if that helps, or drink fruit/herb teas.

HERE IS NEXT WEEK'S TREAT LIST if anyone needs inspiration

WEEK 1 Treats of the Day

Here are seven treats. Pick one for each day of the week. You choose what you fancy from the list. They are not ‘rewards’ for having starved yourself. Do them anyway, especially if you just ate your bodyweight in custard creams. The point of this thread is to start liking ourselves better so it’s easier to want to take good care of ourselves, and to meet any stress/emotional needs through proper care not guzzling!

  1. Manicure. Either book one for a day this week or do one at home. Hand cream, nails clipped and filed, painted or gelled a colour you love. Maybe buy a new colour this week.
  2. Pedicure. The trotters have been carrying extra loads for a while. Soak them, buff them, pumice them, and massage them. If you have a foot spa, get it out. Google some acupressure foot massage videos and try one you like. Finish with painting your toenails and foot cream.
  3. Find a quiet(ish) corner of your home and turn it into a mini retreat – an armchair with soft cushions and throws if you like that sort of thing, a lamp, a side table with flowers or candles, photos or favourite objects on it, maybe your journal and a pot of pens or a favourite book. If you feel stress, rage, sadness, compulsion to shove chocolate on top of your emotions, go there instead, and just sit and let yourself unwind. If you want/can, go shopping for things to make this space even more of a sanctuary. (Could be a desk area or bed or corner of your garden – wherever you feel you can unwind properly.)
  4. Track down five songs from the most carefree, brilliant, powerful times of your life on You Tube and listen to them back to back. I dare you to sing along at the top of your lungs. If you have never had carefree times, then track down the five most uplifting songs you can think of, or come here and ask for suggestions.
  5. Facial. Use a steamer or hot cloth, a facemask or home made gloop that suits your skin type. If it says keep it on for ten minutes, try and do nothing at all for those 10 mins (DC may need TV fix or do it once they’re finally asleep) finish with moisturizer or toner – whatever your skin needs.
  6. Daydream. In your journal or on your phone, write down three things you’ve never done but would love to do that are free or easily within your price range, three things that you used to do and loved but stopped doing that are free or affordable to you, three things that other people do that they seem to love that you’ve wondered what the fuss was about (that are free or affordable) and three things that you really want to do at least once in your life, regardless of cost or probability. Now put at least three of those dozen things in your diary for next week.
  7. Watch a really funny TV show, film or You Tube video for at least half an hour. The kind that makes you cry with laughter.

Does anyone fancy doing next week’s treats and surprises?

million, this sounds a great idea. I love your suggestions for filling the void that comfort eating fills. May I weigh in in the morning and join?

Steala · 04/09/2017 03:02

millifiori. Sorry! Autocorrect.

Gymntonic · 04/09/2017 08:14

Right! Back and weighed in:
5.10 and 13 st 7.5 . That's a BMI of 27.
Feeling dehydrated so lots of water and Fitbit all charged up so lots of steps too I hope.
Lovely list Milli. Not sure I can match it but will have a go next week unless somebody else fancies it?

LiveLifeWithPassion · 04/09/2017 08:50

It's Monday so here I go!
I couldn't weigh myself as the scales aren't working. I probably need to lose a 1.5 stones to make me feel and look ok. 2 stone would be fab.
I'm going to be doing 16.8 as it really works for me.
So, no breakfast then lunch at 12, snack at 3 and dinner at 7.

Love your ideas milli. Can anyone suggest anything really funny to watch?
I already do the music one and have a face mask at home that I bought a while ago and haven't got round to using.
I've started reading my book too.

I need to sort out my house. The clutter is starting to annoy me and every cupboard needs clearing out. I'm going to start in the kitchen and just do one shelf a day until it's done.

millifiori · 04/09/2017 10:48

Thank you Gym for offering to do next week's treats list. Whatever they are, if they're not comfort food they'll be great!

Live - what sort of stuff makes you giggle? Anything from reruns of your favourite sitcoms or stand-ups or game shows to youtube kittens and babies - whatever puts a smile on your face. If all else fails, look for those twin babies giggling on youtube, or the mother with quadruplets (I think) all lying on a bed giggling together - can't fail to make you happy .

*Steala, please join in. Almost no one weighed in on Saturday, so we can start today instead, no problem. It's not a bootcamp ;)

OP posts:
WishingCarrot · 04/09/2017 11:26

I weighed on Saturday but forgot to record. I'm still 8stone 8pound (when I said 8.5 in my first post I meant 8 and a half), so no change. But I did have my period so hoping some of its water retention....maybe....

My ds is back to school tomorrow so we're off to Strada for lunch. I've decided I'm going to have a dessert.

I want this to be a lifestyle change rather than a diet so I'm not going to deny myself too many treats. I just need to be careful I don't give into too many treats too!

I'm enjoying feeling part of this little group Smile

FreeButtonBee · 04/09/2017 15:28

I am not exactly eating diet food but I am trying to do better. Didn't have cake at national trust place at lunchtime. Drank water.

Why I am not a wait given I never frigging sit down all weekend, I don't know 😡

Steala · 04/09/2017 17:44

Thank you. I'm 11st 12. I am a yoyo dieter and vary between 10st 3 and 12 st depending on how life is going. As you can see, not amazingly and I have been turning to food for comfort. I love the approach on this thread because comfort eating just compounds the problems and I end up fat and unhealthy instead. Comforting myself by being kind to myself seems just so much more sensible!

Masonbee · 05/09/2017 21:34
This was my video that makes me laugh!

Haven't managed any pampering yet but just running a bubble bath...

And drinking more water, tracking it for the first time through mfp... Had extra glasses before breakfast and at lunch

Welcome to the club everyone Smile

FreeButtonBee · 06/09/2017 11:01

Still just about managing to stick with it. Cycled 13miles yesterday (commute to and from work, recent change so not really showing any massive long term results yet). Did succumb to some haribo but was otherwise very well behaved and had 3 types of veg with my fish for dinner (fish was covered in butter so do t feel too sorry for me). Holding steady at 11 4. I am doing okay and trying to embrace the fill up on good stuff idea as I've spent quite a while limiting fruit over the past few years (low carb). I've decided apples and grapefruit arw probably better than falling k to 3 rounds of toast!

LiveLifeWithPassion · 06/09/2017 20:36

I'm not doing brilliantly. I just need the strength to do one low carb day to reset myself. At the moment, I'm craving carbs and haven't had enough willpower to resist.
I'm going to stand firm tomorrow!
