Cheddar I think the answer, as others have said, is that you need to suck it and see, and find what not only works for you in terms of weight loss, but what feels actually comfortable and do-able.
For me, 1200 is a perfectly OK calorie intake on any given day, but it doesn't allow for any treats, and 1200 a day + treats on "off days" (wine, meals out, etc.) means I just don't really lose any weight, and for me life without treats is just not worth it! If I tried to stick to 1200 all the time and hardly allowed myself treats, I would resent it and fail. Therefore, although it sounds more extreme, for me it is a heck of a lot easier to have around 3,000 calories over 4 days and then let loose on the weekend.
But I have lost most of the weight I need to lose and have a very low BMR; for other people's metabolism, lifestyle and body type, their 1200 would be my 1000 (in terms of weight loss, hunger, blood sugar) so it is entirely subjective. More to the point, it's about what psychology works for you; for me, I can quite comfortably live on sackcloth and ashes for a few days as long as there's a scheduled glass of wine at the end of the tunnel; for others the release valve is deadly and the top of a slippery slope, so they need to maintain a schedule to which their body and mind can adjust.
Lots of people will tell you that the latter is the "only" way to lose weight / keep it off / be healthy etc., but frankly as Hairspray said people are weird about diet and weight management, and MN particularly so. I like to think of this thread as the Common Sense Thread where we don't get all weird and huffy and bossy with each other for doing what works for us
