Just read a fab long one from 05 - with puff, snowball, cam etc etc on and wondered if there was a more recent thread like that running? If not can this be it?

I joined the gym this week and have been twice this week and going again tomorrow.

Finding it hard going but hoping for it to improve as my fitness does but Im really enjoying it!

Im aiming on losing a cuople of pounds by March and toning up for weddings in April and June!

Wednesday - gym workout 70 mins + arm weights
Thursday - swam 1 mile
Friday - gym workout 70 mins + arm weights

Lets keep this going!!!

PeckaRolloverAgain · 19/01/2007 09:46

Great would be good to have a nice busy thread like the one I read from last year - really motivating!!

I have done :

Tuesday : Gym workout 40 minutes
Thursday: Gym workout 60 minutes

I will be going tonight whilst DH and DS are in the pool but just plan on having a gentle exercise on the treadmill as I am going tomorrow with DH for him to work out a weights routine with me.

I dont want to peak too soon!

Fabulous timing. I have just joined the local gym this morning although starting properly next wednesday as work commitments until then. Can't wait to get going as realised that at the wrong side of 40 (just) it's going to take a healthy diet and exercise to get back to where I want to be and keep up with three ds's.

Here's to a fitter 2007

thirtysomething · 19/01/2007 14:53

I joined just before Christmas - mainly to lose weight (3 stones to shift!) but also to feel more energetic. Was very bad timing as of course I stopped going at all over Christmas but have just started again. I mainly do a 40 minute gym workout but am finding the cross-trainer/stepper such hard work. Only really manage the rower and treadmill for long periods. I also love bodypump and yoga but the gym girl who did my induction said they're pointless for weight loss, so I need to focus on cardio stuff.

PeckaRolloverAgain · 20/01/2007 09:03

Hi everyone!

DimpledThighs did you get the to the gym yesterday?

I went last night whilst DS and DH swam - I did 25 minutes on the treadmill and 30 minutes on the bike.

Im amazed at how much more I can do after only a few visits - the first time I went I struggled with 5 minutes!

Going again this morning for DH to show me the ropes on the weight machines.

It's Monday!! a new week for the gym goers.

Peka - what do you do on the treadmill? run or walk? I really want to get into running..
Yesterday we went for a long walk - 10,000 steps, I am just about to have a shower and then am off to the gym. Yay!!

Bekks · 22/01/2007 07:33

Hello all. I've been going to the gym for a while, but a bit of motivation always good!

Thirtysomething - your instructor is right that weights/bodypump/yoga don't burn many calories whilst you are doing them (unless Ashtanga yoga) but they do increase the amount of muscle you have, which increases your metabolism and burns more calories day to day as muscle burns more than fat - so an important part of losing weight.

I try to do 4 workouts a week - two 40 min cardio, and one 20-25 mins weights and 20-25 mins cardio. Also, if you do weights before your cardio (after warming up) it's supposed to burn more calories than just doing cardio.

HTH!

PeckaRolloverAgain · 22/01/2007 13:42

I went on Saturday for a little bit of Cardio (25 mins) then an hour of weights with DH - was great but I REALLY ached yesterday!

On the treadmill I warm up at level 5 for a few minutes then power walk at level 6 for a few minutes then get into jogging/running for as long as I can manage - when I get knacekred I knock it back to 6 and power walk until I get my breath and then go faster etc etc my aim is to be able to warm up then run for the whole time eventually - baby steps!

hi everyone.
i have just started gong back to the gym as trying ot tone up my legs for labour (hope to squat!!!). only have 5.5 weeks to go til baby is born so taking it easy, yesterday i did 30 minutes on bike and 10 minutes on cross trainer followed by leg lunges and calf raises. have to force myself to go at mo as cold walk there and usually after work i just want to go to bed!!!

MuckyAnthea · 25/01/2007 02:44

Hey Bethoo, 51/2 weeks till you pop! goodness and exercising, good on you. Have you tryed swimming? there are a few pregnant ladies that swim at the pool I use, Its quite funny watching them get out and seeing their huge bumps! quite a shock as you don't see it in the water!! But it must be very theraputic for both the mum and baby I reckon.

Well Tuesday went for a swim, yesterday went to the gym, and today am off for a swim!!

Quick question to anyone who knows, is doing 70 minutes cardio too much? I do 15 minutes warm up on the bike, 20 mins on a machine that uses the thighs [like a cross trainer but with no arm levers], and 35 minutes on the cross trainer. Any advice greatly appreciated.

bethoo · 25/01/2007 09:09

Mucky - no 75 minutes is not too long though you can get the same results in less time! hard to explain but i will try. do you have something like a step machine? just do this for a total of 20 minutes, well for the first 2 minutes start at a level that is easy for you which you would say was exertion level 5 (can talk etc) then every minute increase the level so that after another 5 minutes you are at your exertion level of 10 then go back to your level 5 (remember not the machines level 5)you will be sweating and your heart rate will be elevated throughout. as your fitness levels improve you can increase your level. i hope you know what i mean!
i am too embarrassed to be seen in a swimming costume! bike is ok for me with light weights. cant wait to get my figure back. i must admit i am one of the lucky ones as i only went up one size and am now a 10. just have a bump that looks like a football!

MuckyAnthea · 25/01/2007 10:00

Hey bethoo, thanks for the advice. There is a step machine, but do you know what, I cannot work out how to use it [am too chicken to ask the bloke that will give advice, as I think I have a bit of a crush on him shhhhh!!] anyway, I get on the machine, but fall right back to the floor, I know I am supposed to keep stepping to get higher, but its a different step machine then I am used to, and I can't seem to stay up. Anyway, as long as I am not ovedoing the cardio sessions, then I am happy carrying on with my routine I think. I am just concerned my heart rate goes up a bit. WIshing you a happy birth bethoo, [if thats the right thing to say???]

MummyPenguin · 25/01/2007 10:36

This is great, I was going to start one of these. Haven't been to the gym since before the DC broke up for Christmas. I cycle there, and it's been too cold or wet to go, and I haven't fancied hanging around bus stops in that weather either. I am definately going back next week, can't make it before then. Ths will be motivational, to record what we've done on here, and if we've got no entries then everyone else on this thread must give us a good telling off! No fibbing allowed!!

bethoo · 25/01/2007 12:11

mucky - try taking little steps on the machine first and then gradually lenghtening the stride. and note that holding onto the sides takes away alot of the work so hands off!!!
i only managed to do an hour on the bike as the PTI (physical training instructor, at army gym!)sat on a bike next to me and chatted so did not do anything else. he is quite the eye candy though young. these fit instructors are a motivational reason to train alone! so mucky ask that instructor for help!!!!
i could give a motivational speech if you want!!!

Bozza · 25/01/2007 12:32

I joined the gym at the local council swimming pool. It is quite small and doesn't do any classes but was all I could justify spending on. Also plus point is that it means I can take the DCs swimming for free.

I went to the gym on Monday and did 40 mins cardio (20 on bike and 10 on crosstrainer) and some weights. I did a DVD last night 20 mins cardio and 10 mins toning.

Tonight I am going swimming - but it is not open for swimming until 9 so I thought I might go early and do 5 mins on the treadmill or crosstrainer to warm up, then some weights, then do a swimming session. Last week when I went swimming I did 28 lengths so I am going to aim for 32 this week.

I am very impressed by some of you though.

Bozza · 25/01/2007 22:25

Come on everyone. I went to the gym tonight and did 5 mins to warm up on the cross trainer then 20 mins weights then swam 32 lengths. Will make it 36 next week!

2nervesleft · 25/01/2007 22:33

Hi Can I join this?
Joined a gym last May with aim of losing weight but haven't lost a pound so far.

I have to diet as well so have started on that too.

Would love to get some motivation from everyone to keep going. (And not just taking the kids to their classes, sitting in the coffee shop drinking lattes and chatting with my friends and then shamelessly saying I've been to the gym today)

MuckyAnthea · 26/01/2007 08:02

Went to the gym today, plan to take it easy over the weekend though. Maybe do a bit of yoga at home. Not lost one pound this week, even though I cut out alcohol and went to the gym or swam every day. Very disappointed, but will carry on regardless.

bethoo · 26/01/2007 11:21

if your weight loss stops then you may have plateaued and need to increase yuor level of intensity so get sweaty!!
