I think the general agreement was that we wouldn't weigh this week, but I thought we ought to start a new thread anyway.

So here it is

I'll look it up and email you, flutterbee. Feel free to poke me in the eye with a reminder if I forget; I'm getting old and my memory isn't what it was once!

Peegee, my new scales make me much heavier than the old ones so it looks as if I'm over 22 stone too. There are several of us here who are a similar weight, so don't feel embarrassed or feel you have to justify yourself. We're changing the weigh-in to Thursdays, if that suits, as several people do WW-type classes on Thursdays, so changing the day brings them back into line with us.

hiya!

i started on my milk diet again today so i (hopefully will have lost 5 stone when i see the consultant end March/beginning April.

i am soooooooo hungry! i want to cry! i am fantasising about chicken sandwiches and cheese! can i come on here and yell IM SO HUNGRY every time i feel like i might give in!!

you can tell me i can do it! [sob]

JackieNo · 01/01/2007 21:08

mytwopenceworth - feel free to yell 'I'M HUNGRY' whenever you like.

And we'll yell back 'WE KNOW. BUT YOU CAN DO IT'.

Dottydotthehalls · 01/01/2007 21:13

MTPW - What's the milk diet? (curious emoticon!!)

twoisenoughmum · 01/01/2007 21:28

Thursday weigh-in would suit me fine, too. Hello to all the new faces, you will find a very warm welcome here and plenty of interesting bits and bobs and lots of support and a general feeling of acceptance which is very, very nice, on this thread. I've only been here a short while.

Its difficult to let go of the habits that have made us what we are, isn't it? I read a long time ago a fascinating chapter in (I think) Naomi Wolf's THE BEAUTY MYTH in which she made a very convincing argument along the lines of people who go on a diet and lose weight but then gain it again (which I'm sure we all have done) are actually, subconsciously, trying to do themselves a favour. It is unnatural to deprive the body of the food it has been used to - our physiology goes into a panic mode and grabs hold of every last calorie and makes it go the furthest it possibly can - us weight-gainers are trying to compensate for what we have deprived ourselves of and "paying back" the weeks or months of deprivation, but our metabolisms have been knocked out of kilter and so we inadvertently over-compensate. But her overall message was we are trying to good by ourselves and have all our instincts in the right place.

It stuck in my mind because it ties-in with my overall mindset which tends towards optimisim, although I really do understand that this horribly irritating to those (such as my DH) of the glass half empty way of thinking .

I truly believe that one day I will lose this weight that bothers me, I'm just not sure when it will be yet. Perhaps I'd better excuse myself and go off and set some proper goals ...

justamum · 01/01/2007 22:36

wwb, thanks for the advice, if I can't get a drs appt tomorrow I will go to the pharmacist, I did wonder why I was going so scatty again. Yesterday we went swimming and I managed to leave my specs in the locker when we got dressed, when I went to get them someone else was using it; that was fun to sort out with two tired and hungry babes in tow.
Jackie, I think i'm going to heed you and Sues words of wisdom (sorry, bad grammar)and aim low, 2lb a month sounds more realistic and I think there are real dangers in setting ourselves up for failure through targets. You will be my role model!
I shall be posting my starting weight on Thursday WWB, feel free to beat me over the head with a big stick if I forget.
Happy New Year everyone.

WigWamBam · 01/01/2007 22:52

MTPW, you can come and yell "I'M HUNGRY!" as often as you like ... we might yell the same thing back at you, but at least we can't be eating while we're yelling

Twoisenough, I shall ruminate on the Beauty Myth tomorrow ... I am a tired old bear of very little brain and it doesn't compute all that well tonight!

peegeeweegee · 01/01/2007 23:19

Thanks for the welcome
Thursday weigh-in will be fine for me....

iPodthereforiPoor · 01/01/2007 23:32

hurrah - new year, new me - again.

This last year I've learn't so much from last years threads and now although I'm still a BigMoFo I dont actually hate myself for it!

Each day I exercise, or eat fruit or dont eat the whole cake just 3/4 of it, I am one step further from where I was before and one step closer to how I am meant to be in the future.

I'm one top size down and two trousers on this time last year . Not going to join in with the weigh ins but i hope thats ok?!

will be back for support and chatting this year in a more regular fashion than last year!

agalch · 02/01/2007 09:14

A Thursday weigh in would be good for me as i do my Scottish Slimmers on a Thursday at 7.30pm.

I figure if i was determined enough to stop smoking 25 fags a day 12 years ago i can stop eating so much crap too.

Thats the idea anyway.I hired a cross trainer in December(goes back 14th January). It's really good but havn't used it anything as much as i'd have liked. My 15 yr old and 11 yr old love it and dd's 2.5 and 20 weeks so between them i have hardly any time. Will need to think about some other form of excersise. Not a great swimmer and i'm skint so a gym not an option.Any suggestions girls?

mytwopenceworth · 02/01/2007 10:37

Thanks!

dotty - its a special diet designed to enable you to lose a shedload of weight really quickly! theres a couple of types, one you can have a jelly, one you drink more milk but cant have anything else (stock cube, jelly etc)

Currently, Im drinking 3 pints of skimmed milk a day, having 2 fat free, low cal and, frankly, taste free yoghurts and lots of water, multi-vits and a sugar free jelly and a 'soup' with a stock cube! it is ONLY to be done under specialist care and in very extreme circumstances. in my case its because i weigh about the same as king kong and i have agreed with my consultant to try to lose weight before my operation. (im basically having my stomach lopped off!!!!)

oh, by the way

I'M SOOOOOO HUNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGRYYYYYYYYYY...........
[GRIN]

JackieNo · 02/01/2007 10:41

Wow, mytwopenceworth - that does sound pretty drastic. No wonder you're hungry. But remember, YOU CAN DO IT.

I'm back at work for the first time since mid-December, and it's a bit of a shock to the system. Just getting up at a normal time was awful, and now I want a piece of Christmas cake. Have had to make do with going back to my usual snack at work of 'healthy nuts and seeds'. I don't dislike them, but they're not really hitting the spot today.

I wonder how Dottydot's doing, with her consultant appointment for her eye. Hope it's going OK.

Dottydotthehalls · 02/01/2007 10:46

Just back! No operation needed so I'm relieved - just got to keep an eye on it (so to speak...) and leave it alone while it's behaving itself!

MTPW - that does sound hard - BUT YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!! It'll be great to have lost weight before your op - fingers crossed you lose what you need to by March/April.

JackieNo · 02/01/2007 10:50

That's good news dottydot - you must be very relieved. do you think it was all those chocolate coins you ate ?

WigWamBam · 02/01/2007 12:17

That must be such a relief, Dotty.

MTPW ... that's a really drastic diet. I know desperate times call for desperate measures, but it's not surprising you're hungry. Still, if it gets you your op then it will all be worth it in the end.

I've been really bad today ... dd wanted to go out for breakfast, we haven't been all over the holiday so I said OK ... then she chose Starbucks. You can guess whether I stuck to fruit or not ...

OP posts:
JackieNo · 02/01/2007 12:29

Oooh breakfast at Starbucks . Lucky you.

littlemistletoesensible · 02/01/2007 14:10

Hi all,

Ohhh starbucks WWB, I guess is Not! !

But remember its a treat and we're all allowed treats as long as we stick to only one or possibly two a week it should be fine!!!

I'm struggling big time today

Back at work and a grateful client sent us a Christmas hamper... EEEk! I've already had a slice of Christmas cake and a choccy biccy; And now the mini Xmas pud is calling to me . I Will Resist!!!! Don't hold out much hope for my good intentions unless I can persaude the only 2 people in the office (out of 5 of us) not on a diet (both men!) to eat it all quick! Wicked grin emoticon as I plot!

junkinmytrunk · 02/01/2007 14:10

Afternoon everyone, meant to post earlier today but got distracted.
Things going well so far today, yes I know its only day 1!! but even now I'm soooo tempted to go and snack on ssomething nice so went to get a satsuma and they've all gone already! so made do with an apple.

But I'm so so so happy today!

My cat came home last night after being misssing for 5 months!!!
Just turned up at the front door mieowing to come in...not letting her out of my sight again!.

Been reading all of your posts and you've all made me feel so much better about myself already knowing that i'm not alone in my problems and in trying to slowly change my lifestyle... so thankyou!

Off to think of something for tea

WigWamBam · 02/01/2007 14:21

I have to say that breakfast was lovely ... but probably came on top of far too much overeating over the last couple of weeks

I'm not quite sure how it happened but dd is a real Starbucks addict ... can't think who she gets that from

Junk - how fantastic about your cat! That's just the best news.

OP posts:
littlemisssensible · 02/01/2007 14:59

Funny how they get these passions isn't it WWB ! My dd lovrs Costa's but I can't think why [angelic emoticon]!

I glad to hear about your cat Junk. I'd be beside myself if our kitty went missing, even though I'm allergic to him and only got him because I couldn't ignore dd's begging any more - that and the constant visits from the 'rude words' mice!!!!

Still he earns his keep; I havn't seen any of the blighters since he moved in!

WigWamBam · 02/01/2007 15:06

Absolutely amazing where they get these likings from, can't think how they start . I wouldn't dream of having a Starbucks addiction ... (says she who was given a free Starbucks card complete with £5 credit, because each branch had been given five to hand out as a freebie to their five most regular customers )

hi - I am a newbie to the slimming board. Please can you tell me who is on this board (i.e. is it just ladies trying to lose weight or is it more particular then that e.g. a certain type of diet etc.) -what is bigMoFos short for? also what is the difference between this thread and the Lardy Ladies? Thnaks

WigWamBam · 02/01/2007 16:06

We're just a different group of posters who set up a thread on the board for a different reason to the Lardy Ladies. A couple of us knew each other from the other Talk boards, realised we had similar issues around food, and decided that it would be nice to set up a support thread for people with a lot of weight to lose - and this is the result.

The MoFos is short for ... well, we were originally going to be the Big Mothers, but as one of us is a dad he wasn't too keen on that and suggested MoFos (which is short for a more sweary word so I won't go into details on that ).

The MoFos was set up originally as somewhere that people who have an awful lot of weight to lose could come for support. We know that dieting is hard, whatever your weight, but when you have a lot of weight (and most of us have over 5 stone) it's difficult to feel comfortable on a thread full of women who think they're enormous at half a stone overweight, and who beat themselves up if they eat so much as an apple when they shouldn't.

We have a weekly weigh-in on the MoFos threads, but it's pretty free and easy, and several people who post here for support don't do the weigh-in. Some of the posters aren't actually actively losing weight, just getting some support while they get into the right frame of mind for starting a weight-loss plan. We aren't doing a set diet, just doing our own thing - the only rule, really, is that we don't beat ourselves up if we fall off the wagon; we talk about it, get it out of our systems, then on with the diet. No recriminations, no beating ourselves up, just draw a line under it and start again. We don't do negative comments either.

Most of us have a very long way to go in terms of losing weight, and we started the thread because of that, although it's more about attitude to weight and food than about being very large. We just wanted a place where people understood how large people feel, and where we could feel supported in a way that those ladies who think they're bloaters when they hit 8 stone couldn't manage to support us.

There are lots of other threads on the Big/Slim/Whatever weight-loss board - there are support threads for those doing Weight Watchers, Slimming World, Rosemary Conley - I think someone started a Paul McKenna one as well. They're just started by ordinary MN members who feel that they need somewhere to share their diet journey, or who want to find a like-minded bunch of people to form a support network. There's a thread here for everyone, no matter what size you are or what diet you're doing. Have a look around, see which of the groups suits your needs best.

flutterbee · 02/01/2007 16:15

Well said WWB, you summed that up very nicely.

WigWamBam · 02/01/2007 16:21

It's a bit of an essay though
