Hi all. Kept to my allowance today and plenty of walking while at work. Did hop onto the scales before my dinner and dropped to 11st 7 so hoping for a decent week.

Emz well done on resisting the office cakes, bar Mr K which is a mere morsel! There are feeders in my office but I ignore the snack shelf and as Im part time, I miss the breakfast sandwich day. Unfortunately, my job allows me access to many a supermarket and fast food outlet but I try to avoid!

Try well done on sticking to 900... not sure I could...well I could, i suppose but not without casualties! Ive thought about the 5:2 diet before now but i think id go overboard on the non fasting days to compensate

Emz449 · 05/10/2015 19:17

There are ALWAYS cakes in our office, it's a wonder that anyone loses weight in there!

Well, I finished the day on 44 cals over, so not too shabby. I also pushed my dc on the swing for what felt like ages, so surely that counts for something!

Well done all of you who had on plan Mondays.

Emz449 · 05/10/2015 20:58

MFP told me in 5 weeks i would be 9 stone 14lbs... please correct me if i'm wrong but is that not 10 stone?!

OP posts:
irishe · 05/10/2015 21:01

That is 10 stone in my world. Very strange.

Emz449 · 05/10/2015 21:06

Strange i thought it was, started doubting myself Grin Wouldn't complain mind, would put me within a few lbs of my holiday goal!

Speaking of my holiday, OH and I have been looking at some of the tours we're going to be doing in Peru and we've decided on one that is going to involve doing a minimum of 15k of hiking a day over 4 days Shock a couple of the days actually goes over 20k, it will involve about 6-7 hours of hiking a day! I can't wait. It certainly isn't something i would have considered doing 4 stone ago! If i don't lose weight on this holiday i'm going to be fuming!

OP posts:
irishe · 05/10/2015 21:35

That is going to be one amazing holiday emz.

Yes, being a healthier weight really opens up the opportunity to do a wider range of activities. I found that on my Canadian holiday, because I was slim then, I was able to horse ride, kayak etc without wondering would I kill the horse or get stuck in the kayak!

Life is less limited in some ways I think.

IMustEatMoreVeg · 06/10/2015 06:14

Ha glad I'm not the only one, Trying!

How is your 900 going?

I have just been reflecting on the whole weight loss industry and making myself really really angry. I have been struggling with my weight my entire adult life and tried every diet out there. You know, all the ones where you can eat this but don't eat that. No wonder people are completely confused about what they can and can't eat to lose weight!
These last 2 months have taught me the truth is you can eat Anything and lose weight - but then make informed choices about what is eaten for the rest of the day! For me the calorie counting approach is 1. making me lose weight and 2. not encouraging me to binge. When I am eg low carbing I stick with it for a month and then have an almighty carb blow out but continue the high protein high fat foods too. This way nothing is restricted so I don't build up to a binge on anything in particular (I would binge on broccoli if someone told me to never eat it again!).

Calorie counting is so simple it isn't pushed as a diet because nobody can make money from it. There is no secret you have to pay for. Weight watchers is the closest I suppose but they make it more complicated with points and free foods. IMO that just complicates matters so they can charge for it... it doesn't make it simpler to follow or better for weight loss.

I suppose this is all obvious but it honestly just occurred to me and made me seething!

Not2bObvious · 06/10/2015 08:21

Hi all. Had a few really bad days with what could only be called binge eating (and a night out which included binge drinking) I think I may now have an ear/throat infection and feel lousy so no exercise for me. I haven't mfp'ed since Friday so I better restart today. I'll just aim to be a bit controlled as I don't feel well enough for full on starvation Sad Have to try get a docs appointment, worried about flying with dodgy ears. Just reading back through messages to re-invigorate myself, you sound like you're all doing great!

JontyDoggle37 · 06/10/2015 08:30

Morning all, , stayed the same today but the scales did the 'flicker' that means if I stick to plan today I'll get a loss tomorro. So plan it is! Two rShers of bacon, mushroom soup, spinach and tomatoes for breakfast yum!

JontyDoggle37 · 06/10/2015 08:32

Not mushroom soup, just mushrooms! Bloody autocorrect!

Tryingno1 · 06/10/2015 08:43

My scales stayed the same too! But they tried to move down. So hoping if I still to 900 again they will move tmrw.when I get to 11st 1 it starts slowing down. And it gets much harder. But I really need to loose this so I'm not stopping this time! It's time to add in excercise - which I hate!

I must - agree with your diet thing. I only ever calorie restrict never tried anything else as I figure it can't be good to omit huge things from your diet. Although I have massively cut out carbs I still have milk/fruit/al veg which I know isn't strictly allowed on a v low carb diet. I did ww when I got married 5 yrs ago and I got to 10 stone 5 (those were the days!!) and it was great at keeping me focused and not bingeing. I didn't follow the points! I just calorie counted again but I did it for the fear and embarrassment of gaining and not loosing esp as I did loose slower as I'm not mega overweight but wanted to feel better about myself.

Anyways my goal weight is 10 stone 8, so I only have half a stone but I've been hovering at this weight (half up half down) for about a month now! Now the holiday is going to make it hover to!

Anyways I shall be disciplined before I go, hope I get to 11 (got 3 days). And try weigh daily while away and comeback at 11 1 max. Then I really must shed this half a stone and stop dithering!!

Good luck for weigh in tmrw jonty! Yum brekkie! I'm having an avacado kale banana and cocoa powder smoothie!

IMustEatMoreVeg · 06/10/2015 08:46

Jonty I did think soup would be a strange addition!

psychotropic · 06/10/2015 10:16

That's a great post Imust, it sums up everything I've concluded about dieting when reading about the different approaches. It's incredibly simple really. Not that it translates to being easy!

irishe · 06/10/2015 10:22

Tasty breakfast jonty nice.

Well I have put a lb on but have started TOM. Does anyone know if its possible to lose weight whilst having a period? I never seem to lose anything which is frustrating. Does the weight loss continue but does not show on scales due to extra fluid in body? Need an explanation that will keep me motivated over next few days! Then I can hope for decent loss next Monday.

imust I agree, the diet business is rather murky at times. Sadly so many people are unable to lose weight on their own.

irishe · 06/10/2015 10:46

Sorry for double post!

imust I agree, the diet business is rather murky. So many people, including myself, cannot lose weight and then maintain a healthy weight on their own. For me, this thread provides the support I got at a weight watcher meeting and mfp provides the limitations on my eating that counting points did. The plus pts of mfp/thread for me are

  • it's free
  • don't have to go to meetings.

Sadly for me, the underlying disordered eating is still there. I still want to eat too much of unhealthy food. I am just using a different route to reigning it in.

The roots of my over eating lie in childhood. My mum loved me a lot and one of the ways she demonstrated her love was cooking the family huge tasty meals. Very high fat. I therefore equate food with love. I went on in adulthood to marry a man who loved food and loved cooking for me. We spent our pre DC life eating out at restaurants. No surprise, we are both overweight!

My ultimate challenge is to untangle this link and try and equate food with fuel, but honestly I don't think I ever will. It's too deep rooted, part of my DNA now!

So for me, if I eat creamy pasta or buttery toast it reminds me of my mum who used to make me these things in abundance, and I feel a glow of love.

I am trying to use my intellectual knowledge of a healthy weight leading to Longer and better quality life span, to challenge the emotional resonances of food.

Knowing this does not make it any easier. Argh!

MajesticWhine · 06/10/2015 10:50

I don't know about that irishe, but your theory about TOM makes sense, maybe you will see the loss afterwards.
I am up 1/2 lb but after a fairly neglectful few days, I am happy with that. I am having some personal difficulties at the moment and it makes it really hard to prioritise weigh loss. I just really want to say fuck it and eat whatever I like.

psychotropic · 06/10/2015 10:51

I'm sure the weight loss continues behind the scenes, it's just water retention isn't it.

The last time I was weighed and body fat assessed (2013!) I was 9st 3 (21% bf) so I've got about 17lbs to lose. Weight today is 146.2.

psychotropic · 06/10/2015 10:53

If I can stick to the half a pound a week amount for a few weeks I think I should try for a bigger deficit otherwise it will take almost a year Shock

Does anyone know how many weeks you have to stick to a given amount for to know if it is making you lose/gain/maintain?

irishe · 06/10/2015 11:09

trying good luck with getting to 11, 3 days to go!

not2 sorry to hear the last few days have been tough, and now a throat infection? Grim. I am still on anti biotics for my strep throat, on the plus side, not being able to swallow without pain really curbed my eating!

majestic sounds like some things are tough at the moment. Be kind to yourself.

irishe · 06/10/2015 11:15

psycho sorry don't have the answer to that, think it will vary between individuals. Also as I am only trying to lose I have not investigated calories for maintaining.

Not2bObvious · 06/10/2015 12:57

Thanks Irishe, just back from the doctor, on anti-b's, looks like an ear infection. Got bloods taken too just to rule out any thyroid issue which might be making weight loss harder than it should be and also bp a bit high. Feel very tired now as I walked there and back (around 4 miles) but I didn't want to drive with my hearing all wonky. Got to eat for nourishment for the rest of the week, just want to feel better by my flight on Saturday

MrsDLH · 06/10/2015 13:05

Good afternoon! Scales said 11st 6 this morning so another lb down. If I carry on sticking to plan for the rest of week, I should be able to get below last Friday's weight.

Emz I suppose 9st 14 sounds better... I'm 10 stone 20 Wink Those hiking trips should have an effect, you'll be like Lara Croft by the time you're done. Remember to up your calories a bit though, especially as you'll be dealing with low altitude.

I must You are so right with your post. Fundamentally, it's a calories in, calories out game but there are so many elements to wrap your head around! I read up on many a diet over the years, tried a few with little success. Tried slimfast, didn't work for me. This is the only thing that works for me but some days I just want to rebel. I have friends who have done the Cambridge diet, one lost 9st but she is ruled by it. She struggles to maintain so puts weight back on then does a few weeks of the diet again, and repeat. I don't want that. I can't afford that! Like irishe, I like eating unhealthy food. I wish I was someone who preferred salad over a takeaway but I'm not.

not2 get well soon. You need to eat when you're ill so you have the strength to fight the virus. Maybe some healthy, hearty soup if that's something you like? And hope things get better for you soon majestic

jonty I like the sound of your breakfast. I had a yoghurt and 3 stale Jacobs flatbreads. Living the dream.

irishe I think you still lose fat while it's tom but will only show on the scales once the fluid retention has gone. I think.

psycho sorry don't know how long. I suppose you could try a level of calories and weigh daily to see if there is a pattern. Or put your details in one of those calorie calculators?

irishe · 06/10/2015 14:13

mrsdlh congrats on your weight loss, good luck for the rest of the week.

Yes it's a bugger liking unhealthy food!

Not2bObvious · 06/10/2015 14:26

Majestic hope things get better for you soon, foods is my go to when things are tough so I know the feeling.
I wish I liked soup Sad I like the idea of it but it turns my stomach MrsD - oh and well done on the extra pound off! The doctor weighed me, biker boots/jeans/top - broke my heart! Went into a bit of a sweat Grin Came in nearly 81kg, knock off 2kg for clothes/boots and that puts me at 12.4.5 but my own scales put me at 12.6.4 stripped off this morning. Arg!!!
