TotallyAddictedToLurking · 26/12/2013 19:58

I am 4 stone over weight and it's making me very unhappy. I've been saying I'll lose weight for the last two years! Instead I've just gotten fatter.

I know most people don't keep up their new years resolutions but I am hoping having a thread on here will help.

If anyone is interested please feel free to join me. I will be using weight watchers but I would love anyone to join.

I intend to start on Jan 1st. I've bought
a nice diary to write my food in.

I'd love it if people could share meal plans and recipie ideas.

1st official weigh in. Was 238 now 234 more to do with previously weighing in the evening

ellietrying · 30/12/2013 09:35

set up mfp - username ellietrying

Feel free to add me! I still haven't decided the best way for me to lose weight. I was thinking about maybe a challenge. I very rarely drink so was thinking maybe no chocolate for January? It would definitely give me a kickstart. Will start eating healthier and take it from there I think!

MyNameIsKenAdams · 30/12/2013 10:09

MyNameIsKenAdams first weigh in started @ 181, todays weight 178, progress = -3 whooop!!

MyNameIsKenAdams · 30/12/2013 10:14

Oh hang on....
Start 13,1
Last weigh in 12,13
This weigh in 12,10

MyNameIsKenAdams · 30/12/2013 10:15

Crap at converting at to lb and back again!

TheOnlySevenSleighbells · 30/12/2013 10:26

Well done to everyone loosing already!

I'm not starting properly until Thursday, I think I might give the local slimming world group a try next week.

BrokenButNotFinished · 30/12/2013 10:45

I weighed. It was horrifying. :-(

12.5 stone. Which since I'm only 5 foot 1 makes my BMI an obese one.

I would like to be 8 stone, but would be happy with 9.

Not sure who I've added on mfp and who not...

justonemorecake · 30/12/2013 10:53

I've decided to stick with the sales that make me half a stone heavier, so first official weigh in:

Start weight: 17st1lb
First weigh in: 17st

So a loss of 1lb. Not much, but I did only start two days ago!

HugAndRoll · 30/12/2013 10:54

I'm not sure who I've added either. Mfp username is the same as my MN nn so feel free to add me.

Today and tomorrow I'm tracking my usual diet. This will hopefully both shock me and motivate me.

PuggyMum · 30/12/2013 11:17

1lb off. Which given I've not really started yet am very pleased with!
Start weight 14st.
Today's weight 13st 13

MummyDuckAndDuckling · 30/12/2013 11:18

Well done all so far!!

I've had a healthy breakfast and planning to chart with mfp. To be -2lbs a week, I've to eat aprox 1,500 cals which I know I can do if I cut out all the crap! Not much in house till I go shopping but plenty of soup etc to keep me going for a few days. I'll try get to Asda after new year

OohMrDarcy · 30/12/2013 11:41

Wow there is some good initial weightloss going on here! I am going to weigh in on a monday and try not to do it in between!

Quite pleased by how I managed my shred last night, so looking forward to doing that again - muscles fine today too. Not sure whether to expect a weight loss from that, but have lost many inches in the past, so may measure too if I can be brave enough

darwiniandreams · 30/12/2013 12:42

I'll be going out later to buy a tape measure to track the inches too with copious amounts of alcohol to numb the shock Wink I may weigh a little earlier this week til my official start date just out of curiosity

MyNameIsKenAdams · 30/12/2013 12:58

Ive had a pair of beautiful leather knee high boots delivered today which are too tight on the calves. A bargain at only £35, I will keep them and use as a target for thinner calves. Only trouble is that I gain muscle mass there so will take an age with zumba classes Sad

WoodBurnerBabe · 30/12/2013 13:18

I've had to give up on fasting today as I was just so ridiculously hungry I couldn't concentrate on work. But will stick to the 1500 cals that MFP says I need to eat to lose 1lb per week. No way is DH beating me at this one!

I keep hanging onto the fact that if I can lose 52lbs (which I can!), that will mean my BMI is 22.2. I've lost 3lbs already, going from 30.1 to 29.6. Meaning I am now merely very overweight as opposed to obese, which is nice to hear.

The strange thing is, my perception of DH is that he is very overweight. Much more so than I, but if you calculate our starting BMI's, mine was 30.1 and his was 32.9. So although he is definitely obese, the discrepancy was not as great as I thought... His 52lbs off still puts him in the overweight category (26.0) whereas mine takes me to 22.2.

The lowest it has ever been in my adult life is 25.2 and I maintained that for precisely 1 week! At that weight I felt relatively comfortable, but I think another stone off from that and I would feel fabulous!

I may be overanalysing the numbers to be honest. I never do that, ever... Although I am an engineer in my professional life and numbers make the world go round for me!

TaillessChicken · 30/12/2013 13:27

Woodburner it's ok not to fast if you have to work...like you say you can still be sensible. Well done for getting out of obese and into overweight, that's my goal as well - one of them.

KenAdams I would love some boots like that, I will treat myself to some when I get to my goal weight I think. I am looking forward to being able to buy clothes that I like rather than what fits.

Justonemore A pound is still a loss - well done.

I'm feeling pleased with myself as I went to the supermarket having not had breakfast. I realised when there that I had to eat before I drove the car home as I was feeling dizzy; I was sensible and looked at the calories and chose a modest 120 calorie low fat bar and had that - just one, not the whole pack of 5 :)

Curioustiger · 30/12/2013 13:33

Wood burner, did you have breakfast? Breakfast is fatal on 5:2. It just revs your tummy up and gets it ready for more!

TalkinPeace · 30/12/2013 13:41

Important things to remember

  • at this time of year the first half stone you will lose will be fluid and undigested food - so it will go fast but then the rate will slow down
  • your body will react to the reduced intake in fits and starts so you have to keep your eyes on the long term goal and not "fall off the wagon"
  • do not go overboard. To lose a pound a week, if you are currently over BMI 25, all you need to do is to eat within your TDEE
thefitgirls.com/tdee-calculator.aspx
  • drink AT LEAST two pints of water a day as hunger is actually thirst much of the time

if you eat like a slim person you will become a slim person

GoodKingWencesLACK · 30/12/2013 13:46

I have exactly 52 lbs to lose to be at my fighting weight....I'm in, but will probably lurk a lot as I often only have time to read and run...

LackaDAISYcal · 30/12/2013 14:01

oooh, that was my Christmas name change....back in civvies again Grin

atomicyoghurt · 30/12/2013 14:13

I've not started yet but I've been thinking I might take January to try and get a bit more healthy and then start reducing calories in Feb.
Little things like actually eating some fruit and drinking some water.

I don't want to start out all guns blazing and then stop because I can't maintain it. I'd rather ramp up slowly...

WoodBurnerBabe · 30/12/2013 14:14

Yes, I had breakfast. Mental note for tomorrow - will try without breakfast. I'm eating way inside my TDEE (about 10% below) though, so I should lose weight even without the fasting. My BMI is 29.6 so I could eat more and still lose weight?

Not sure exactly how the TDEE thing works - is it the amount that keeps you steady weight?

MyNameIsKenAdams · 30/12/2013 14:30

DH knows I am attempting to eat healthier, but when I explained today thar I am doing 52lbs in 52wks he looked aghast and said that would make me too skinny Grin

Have agreed to re-assess as and when he thinks IM too skinny Iwish!

WoodBurnerBabe · 30/12/2013 15:14

My DH was a bit taken aback at the 52lbs thing but only because he doesn't think I'm fat

TalkinPeace · 30/12/2013 15:20

Woodburnerbabe
TDEE If you put in your age, weight, height and set activity level to low, that will tell you the maximum you need each day to stay the same weight.
If you eat less than that and move around more, the weight will fall off at a steady pace.
BUT
And its a very big but
Please use MFP and start weighing your food - just to find out how many calories you are normally eating
www.wisegeek.com/what-does-200-calories-look-like.htm
is quite eye opening ...

And yes, if you can get your other halves and grown up children to embark on the challenge with you (I still fast twice a week with my DH as he still has weight to lose) then you are far, far more likely to succeed both this year and for ever.
