Week 2 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - How was week 1 for you?!

BIWI · 06/05/2013 09:19

Hopefully you've all entered your weight in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and I hope that everyone managed a successful first week!

It probably wasn't the easiest week to start, what with the bank holiday, but never mind. It's a really good lesson that life and all its temptations will frequently get in the way.

Hope everyone has some sunshine today. It's perfect barbecue weather, and barbecue food is perfect for low carbing. And if anyone wants a good recipe, there's a lovely one for marinated chicken on the recipe thread

thanks for answering my question upthread BIWI, sorry am only catching up now. so inspired by other people's experiences with this, and buoyed up by the fact that i seem to be able to stick to it without feeling starved or deprived, it's been a real eye-opener.

haven't been able to bring myself to put butter in my coffee yet Smile - but have tried it black with coconut oil and can report it is delish.

i wanted yoghurt this morning for a change but the family were having french toast so it was easier for me just to quietly fry two eggs and some mushrooms and join them.

have found that i am getting tired and grumpy quickly though - maybe not getting enough sleep and nothing to do with the WOE? also craving fruit/fruit juice - i would have consumed loads of this in the past.

still, the scales and the loss of stomach bloat have me hooked, just got to read the book and get to grips with some more recipes! (found celeriac at last, yesterday, after a fortnight's search!)

look forward to reading what everyone's having for dinner, and roll on monday!

After four days of feeling utterly crap with this throat lurgy; I fell spectacularly off the low carb wagon last night Blush. korma, rice, poppadums, wine and fruit pastilles BlushBlushBlush

Still feeling really ill this morning; trying hard not to swallow unless absolutely necessary as it hurts so much Sad I think my lemsips and throat lozenges re-awoke the carb cravings and I was too tired and ill after work last night to think about something suitable to eat, so I grabbed my favourite comfort foods.

But, it's a blip, and I will get back on it, as I've felt so much better over the last couple of weeks before the lurgy hit.

On the upside, I've had to go to the next notch on my belt this morning though, so that made me feel quite Smile. Hopefully I've not done too mcuh damage.

Morning all. Lazy Sunday morning here. Although DH would disagree as he is out cutting the grass. On a ride on lawnmower so I dont feel too sorry for him. He is flying off in business this evening for a few days so we had a roast yesterday instead of today. Roast lamb, mashed swede (which was a pale yellow so looked like scrambled eggs!), leeks and asparagus fried in butter. Was yum. Drank loads of water. Not even tempted by wine. Unheard of in this house. Especially as DH is still merrily drinking away. He thinks I am being very good.

So far today I have had two cups of tea and a slice and a half of cheese. About to cook a big brunch of bacon, sausages, eggs, mushrooms and tomatoes. Dinner will be chicken breasts with mozzarella and bacon with a big salad.

Seem to be a pound down this morning. And my rings are much looser. I always notice that when I cut out carbs - especially wheat.

Have a good Sunday everyone.

Sammisatt - I think we had different Saigon experiences! None of your experiences are on my list! Funny.

MrsHerculePoirot · 12/05/2013 13:05

Brunch - little gem lettuce, avocado, grilled goats cheese and cherry tomato salad
D - BBQ lamb steaks and low carb sausages with courgette and leeks.

toomuchtoask · 12/05/2013 13:18

L: half an avocado with slices of cheddar
S: leftover chicken, mayonnaise and salad with vinaigrette

kiwigirl42 · 12/05/2013 13:31

nespresso and cold lamb chop! well, it is Sunday morning!

Tigglette · 12/05/2013 14:26

Happy Sunday everyone, managed to survive another alcohol free Saturday night - so tempted by the wine rack though, I'll be glad to Bootcamp lite at weekends from tomorrow. Food today is:-

B. Greek yoghurt, double cream and cinnamon (thank you to whoever suggested this - lovely)
L. Sausages and eggs scrambled with butter
D. Lamb pot roasted in a little wine, rosemary and garlic (for cooking, no winey gravy coming in my direction) celeriac, creamed leeks and Savoy cabbage.

Just about to start ironing, waiting for Jonny Walker on radio 2, such is my Sunday afternoon routine.

middleagedspread · 12/05/2013 14:34

I'm really struggling today. Played energetic sport for 2 hours this morning & feeling very light headed. Had a handful of nuts then a big salad with eggs, olives, avo & mayo but I'm really fighting the urge to eat the lovely warm bread I made for everyone else.
Any emergency advice?

Tigglette · 12/05/2013 14:44

I'd go for Greek yoghurt or some cheese to nibble on if I needed a snack. Or olives, v tasty and full of good oils.

Remember you know what bread tastes like and you can always have some if you really really want to. I often find giving myself permission to have it if I want it (remembering how hard I'm working to loose weight) helps me not want it any more.

If you're hungry though, you need to be eating more fat so check what you've eaten today and add something fatty.

middleagedspread · 12/05/2013 15:02

Thanks Tigglette had some unsweetened stewed rhubarb with cream & feel better.
Incidentally, you're right about the forbidden foods.

Tigglette · 12/05/2013 15:27

That's a great idea, we have a bundle of rhubarb from the garden and I wondering what to do with it but I guess unsweetened with maybe some ginger and cream would be good.

sammisatt · 12/05/2013 15:53

B: bacon and eggs, yog, nuts berries excuse: ran 10k for charity. Hadn't ran in months so needed something more carby
L: chicken, asparagus and avocado salad
Cheese
D: beef and spinach massam curry currently slow cooking in the oven.

BIWI · 12/05/2013 16:27

middleagedspread - until your body is properly adjusted to fat-burning, as opposed to carb-burning, it will struggle a bit with exercise. And two hours of exercise is a lot!

sammisatt - when you are properly ketogenically-adapted you won't need the carbs. Honestly!

CrabbyBigbottom · 12/05/2013 16:31

Bloody hell I'm craving carbs today! Sad I guess that's my penance for last night's transgressions. Can't stop thinking about scones hot from the oven with jam and clotted cream. Sad Sad I confessed this to DH earlier and he said "Oooooh, scones!" in a very hopeful manner. I started chanting "I don't want to be fat, ANY MORE!" over and over until I got a hold of myself. Grin

I've taken some painkillers (tooth aching) and just about to have a cup of tea so hopefully that'll pick me up a bit.

I did think of something a bit naughty to make... how about a small cup of double cream, heated and whisked with a tsp of cocoa powder, some crushed cardamom seeds and some grated nutmeg. Eaten with a spoon from a little wee bowl, I reckon.

My G&B cocoa is 12.5g carb per 100g, so a teaspoon would equal about 2g of carb. BIWI with your big stick, would that be permissable for those moments when we feel in need of a big treat?

CrabbyBigbottom · 12/05/2013 16:34

Also today's meals -

B - bacon, poached egg, 5 little low-carb tomatoes
L - prawns in garlic butter with rocket, avocado and alioli
D - will be slow roasted belly of pork, cooked on a bed of fennel so it gets all saturated with the pork juices, roasted sprouting broccoli, mashed roasted celeriac. I can't promise not to have a glass of red with that. Blush

middleagedspread · 12/05/2013 16:36

BIWI, thanks, how long does it take for your body to get used to it?
I've always taken a lot of exercise, I'm thinking from tomorrow I could have a packet of macadamia nuts half way through (with my water of course!)

Tigglette · 12/05/2013 17:07

Middleagespread, it took me about two weeks to be able to exercise and not feel like I was going to die - I do black belt level karate training 3 times a week and have no problems with energy now at all.

BIWI · 12/05/2013 17:25

Crabby - at the moment, I think the answer has to be 'no'. It's the carbs that are speaking to you right now, telling you to go and get something sweet! Ride it out and you will feel much better for it, honestly.

middleagedspread - it won't take you long. Certainly by the end of a month of low carbing it should be fine for you to work so hard. If you're interested, there's a really good book about low carbing and exercise here

Grin

You're right of course BIWI, I was totally hearing the siren song of the carbs. After I'd had a cup of tea I felt much better - I think I just needed a little boost.

I'm still nursing that idea as a treat 'pudding' for some time in the future though... Wink

BIWI · 12/05/2013 17:57

No problems with it in the future, just not on Bootcamp! Grin

OP posts:
decaffwithcream · 12/05/2013 18:26

Are pinenuts ok on bootcamp? They're 4g of carbs per 100g so if used sparingly as a topping would that be ok?
