Week 2 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - How was week 1 for you?!

BIWI · 06/05/2013 09:19

Hopefully you've all entered your weight in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and I hope that everyone managed a successful first week!

It probably wasn't the easiest week to start, what with the bank holiday, but never mind. It's a really good lesson that life and all its temptations will frequently get in the way.

Hope everyone has some sunshine today. It's perfect barbecue weather, and barbecue food is perfect for low carbing. And if anyone wants a good recipe, there's a lovely one for marinated chicken on the recipe thread

Phew. I can't sleep so have been catching up on the thread. It's taken me a few hours, I keep getting distracted.

Happy Birthday newstart Smile

Morning Losers! Today is fried breakfast & roast dinner day, yum yum yum!

Does anyone grow there own herbs or vegetables? My herbgarden is doing pretty well, I love spring when they all start to flourish again. Also, being able to grab a handfull of parsley or rosemary etc whilst cooking is great. I am trying to grow some courgettes, purple carrots, sprouts, chard, cabbage & lettuce too, but not sure if these will be successful :(

middleagedspread · 12/05/2013 08:03

BA your smokey pork burgers were delicious, they seemed a bit crumbly so i baked them in the oven. Had them with coleslaw & greek salad.

QueenofDreams · 12/05/2013 09:06

Ah hi all. I managed to be good yesterday despite the bounty in carby junk spread out before me. ILs came for food and football, and DP couldn't be bothered with lots of effort. Thankfully I resisted the potato skins, breaded mushrooms, breaded goujons, pizza, crisps, sweets and pretzels. I just had prawn and avocado salad, roasted chicken thighs and green salad. Drank plenty of water too.

BIWI · 12/05/2013 09:19

changeforthebetter - marscapone has 4.9g carbs per 100g, so you have to count that. Cathedral City cheddar (for example) is 0.1g carbs per 100g. So yes - hard cheese is ok, soft cheese you have to be careful about! But why the nuts? Nuts are not allowed on Bootcamp!

chipsbigbowl (perhaps not the best name for this thread Grin) -sorry I missed your post last night. Either the Prosecco or the red wine would have been my choice. No diet drinks on Bootcamp!

Ehric - I assume you're vegetarian?! If you are, then eat more nuts as a protein source. Chick peas aren't great, although I can understand that you wouldn't want eggs at every meal. I'm not a veggie, so would have to ask others here who are to advise you. My key thing would be to make sure that you don't get bored by eating the same thing. I can recommend Rose Elliot's book "The Vegetarian Low-Carb Diet Cookbook"

Thanks BIWI - I opted for a glass of red - small and 1/2 a very small bar of 80% dark Prestat chocolate. Was lovely. And thankfully seems not to have made too much of a dent as am half a pound down on yesterday (this is week 4 for me, so the alcohol permissible!)

BIWI · 12/05/2013 09:31

Ah. OK. Grin

I have done day 2 of Shred (and Boy am I feeling it!), but have put ON a lb despite being as good as gold? confused

Is it likely to be water weight because of the exercise?

Chipsbigbowl · 12/05/2013 09:37

(in fact, was experiencing a bit of a stall - well a few days with no movement - and the wine and choc seems to have got thins going again. Maybe a lesson. Hahaha)

dawnpreview · 12/05/2013 09:39

Went to hen party yesterday, but didn't do too badly in the end.
I did have a pasta dish, but it was a small portion. Had a really sore throat so didn't eat my desert! Only had 2 glasses of White wine and came home early as I felt so rough (and I'm old and can't do clubbing til 2am any more!!)
During the day I also took part in a 2 hour Bollywood dance lesson, which was very energetic, and walked about 3 miles. So hopefully all that exercise has helped- my feet are killing me today!
Will be interested to see what the scales say tomorrow.

BIWI · 12/05/2013 09:47

TreeLuLa - are you weighing daily? If so, don't worry about it. Your body weight naturally fluctuates on a daily basis.

Only comment I will make is that when people tell me they are being good/following the rules properly it usually signals that they aren't ... Wink

TreeLuLa · 12/05/2013 09:50

You said that last time BIWI!!!!

Last time you were right, but this time you truly can't fault me - I promise!

No booze, following the rules to the letter - loads of water. Been going down and down until I started the Shred.

Yes, I am a daily weigher. Scales have showed a drop every day until yesterday, when they stayed the same, and today I had put on a lb!!

Thanks ruby! WIll it go away again? I'd really like to be able to report a 4 lb loss this week.

OK, update!

just got dressed and my jeans definitely seem looser. Smile

WillieWaggledagger · 12/05/2013 10:07

Yup treelula when I start a 'new' exercise I often gain or stall for a few days. My understanding is that as with all exercise you 'damage' the muscles slightly (this is a positive thing, as they get stronger as they repair themselves) and then they retain water to help in the repair process. I could be entirely wrong about this, but that is how I think of it.

Don't let this put you off exercising as of course it's all good for yiu and will help in the long run, but it is very common to experiene a bit of a gain particularly when you change uour activity. It may also be natural fluctuation unrelated to the exercise.

I would be wry careful about aiming for particular weight loss targets week on week, as your body may well have other ideas! As long a the overall trend is downwards then all is well

WillieWaggledagger · 12/05/2013 10:08

And do measure yourself!

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 12/05/2013 10:12

/yes, absolutely measure yourself! It makes a massive difference. I have lost 1 inch around my waist already! I know because my belt goes back to where it was when I was LC last time. Grin

TreeLuLa · 12/05/2013 10:12

Thanks willie.

I think I will keep on with the Shred as I just feel better feeling like I am looking after myself properly again. As it is only 20 mins, I can fit it in (v busy days and 3 yr old twins have given me the perfect excuse up to now Wink) and it really seems do-able and to make a difference (if the soreness is anything to go by!)

I will also keep on doing the woe as I am - so pleased with the weight results, but maybe more so what another poster said upthread - it wasn't me that was a compulsive eater - it was the carbs that made me that way. These days I occasionally forget to eat Shock

BIWI · 12/05/2013 10:18

I'm nothing if not consistent, Tree! Grin

And remember - you won't lose every day. But I suspect Willie's explanation is also right.

Thanks BIWI; I have lost about 7lbs over the past two weeks. DH has lost about 10lbs and he has been naughty with occasional beer.

I am definitely feeling better now, so will carry on and also re-start the Shred today or tomorrow. Only another 3-4 stone to go now..Hmm

twinklestar2 · 12/05/2013 10:42

I'm rejoining you today :) I was umming and ahhing about leaving but I know this is the easiest way for me to lose weight and I think the lighter version of bootcamp will suit me (being able to eat fruit and yoghurt).

Not sure what today's menu is going to look like as we're having a BBQ in a couple of hours so that might be breakfast, lunch and dinner!

CrabbyBigbottom · 12/05/2013 10:58

Ok well last night was the dinner date that I was kind of dreading - certainly not because of the company or deliciousness of the food, just how a boozy carb-fest would affect my weight. So...

B/L - heavenly salad.
S - bit of smoked salmon chopped up into lots of creme fraiche.
2 cups tea, lots of water (over 2L)
D - beetroot and feta cheese salad to start, followed by asparagus risotto. Pear tart for pudding. All delicious. Prosecco, copious amounts of red wine, port, then calvados. Blush Grin I did drink lots of water too.

And this morning - a 1lb loss on the scales! Shock Shock

That excerpt above posted by BIWI makes a lot of sense about why you lose so much in the first couple of weeks. I'm going to try to drum that into my head so that I'm not really disillusioned when I stop losing at this rate.

12st 3lbs; 6lbs off, 26lbs to go.

BIWI · 12/05/2013 11:02

Sounds like a lovely meal, Crabby!

Thanks biwi
Yes I am vegetarian so it's a bit limited. I also tend not to cook full on meals, rather throw something together at each mealtime (not junk) so I need an easy sub for rice/pasta/bread.
What about pulses like kidney beans etc?
