Week 2 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - How was week 1 for you?!

BIWI · 06/05/2013 09:19

Hopefully you've all entered your weight in the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness and I hope that everyone managed a successful first week!

It probably wasn't the easiest week to start, what with the bank holiday, but never mind. It's a really good lesson that life and all its temptations will frequently get in the way.

Hope everyone has some sunshine today. It's perfect barbecue weather, and barbecue food is perfect for low carbing. And if anyone wants a good recipe, there's a lovely one for marinated chicken on the recipe thread

toomuch - often it's to do with the contrast with weeks 1 & 2, where some significant losses can be seen. If you're low carbing, not only do you lose a lot of water weight but you also empty your glycogen stores, which can account for anything up to 7lbs, I believe.

So by comparison, following weeks can be disappointing!

It's probably also to do with the body adjusting to burning fat rather than carbs.

Not sure what the proper explanation is, but I've seen it reported so often that it's always worth warning people about it.

An interesting piece about the first month on a low carb diet

Although it doesn't talk about weeks 3/4/5 ...

Oh it is half but I still have today and tomo to go before it is all over. I am tired. Can't keep up with all this craziness. Sleep is very much needed yes I actually discovered that in my absence Grin

toomuchtoask · 11/05/2013 14:42

Thank you BIWI.

halfthesize · 11/05/2013 14:42

Newstart Ive been a little absent recently, is it your birthday celebrations and wow a whole weekend thats hard core Smile

BIWI · 11/05/2013 14:43

And an interesting piece about how to break a stall

NB We're talking about a real stall here - an extended period of time without weight loss, not just a couple of days!

OP posts:
BIWI · 11/05/2013 14:47

Found this on lowcarbfriends:

"From tracking a lot of people who become assimilated into the lowcarb lifestyle (hehe...resistance is futile!) a pattern emerges....

the 2 week induction is pretty heady...weight lost just about every
single day, enormous and unbelievable amounts of weight loss are reported.

This is often followed by complaints that weight loss "stalls" or that
the rate drops to only 1 pound per week. (if that).

Many people just don't know that fat-loss ...the actual goal when on a
weight-reduction" diet, is rate-limited. In other words, the human
body has factors that prevent more than a certain amount of fatty-acid
release from storage...and even more factors that prevent those released fatty acids from being used up instead of stored back into the fat cells.

A priority of the human body is survival. Anything that threatens its
survival results in the cascade of events to maintain the previous
status quo. Water fluctuations are one way the body does this.
OK...so you done good on Atkins' during induction...lost 10 pounds the
first 2 weeks.

Maybe 7 the first week and 3 the second. But, whoa!
Weeks 3 and 4 there is NO loss! And weeks 5 and 6 is only 1/2 pound
each! So... what gives?

Initially, the body jettisons the water attached to the glycogen stores
that we diligently deplete to get into ketosis...this accounts for
about 3-5 pounds of water.

In addition, muscle stores of glycogen are not
being replaced when used...which will account for the rest. All in
all...MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized during the first week... and MAYBE 1/2 pound of fat was metabolized the 2nd week. Of that 10
initial pounds, only 1 pound was fat and 9 pounds water...

The body senses this lack and sirens start shrieking:
Warning! Warning! Losing water... new thing...got to get back to the
status quo! Brain tells body to produce and release that vasopressin
antidiuretic hormone....more water is retained, and no weight loss
noticed.

Fat loss is still occuring, MAYBE even 2 pounds per week, because
ketosis is firmly established and appetite supression is in
effect...but water retention is hiding that continuing fat loss.

The body is preventing dehydration with this mechanism, and that's a good thing.

From the perspective of the scale, it can be discouraging.
Which is why the mantra: Water retention masks fat loss (repeated
frequently to oneself ) is helpful.

Water retention will mask ongoing fat-loss for as long as the body
retains the water. We can combat this by drinking more water...but we
aren't going to totally overcome this mechanism during the initial
water-loss phase of the Atkins diet.

By weeks 5 and 6, things start to get back in balance, and the scale
will begin to reflect the true fat-loss...which, as mentioned before is
rate-limited.

Individuals vary, but max weight loss runs about 2 pounds per
week...under extremely optimal conditions... or 1% of body weight.(whichever is the lower number)

Take-home message: Even when the scale is in a stall, fat loss can be
occuring. Don't use the scale as an excuse to undermine your progress
Hope this can shed some light for you as well!"

Thats a fab piece BIWI

middleagedspread · 11/05/2013 14:51

That is an excellent warning for next week. It's good to be prepared, thank you.

CiderwithBuda · 11/05/2013 15:17

BIWI - you put so much effort into all this. Thanks so much. You are a star.

That piece is very interesting. Albeit a bit scary!

BIWI · 11/05/2013 15:20

My pleasure Smile

can anyone quickly tell me what I need on Ocado shop? the vanilla powder/paste? which one and what else?

WillieWaggledagger · 11/05/2013 16:49

the vanilla powder is this one by ndali - it's a teeny tiny little pot

JaxTellerIsAllMine · 11/05/2013 16:57

I looked for it, but they dont have it on Ocado and I am not going out near Waitrose, though if I do I will pick up a pot.

Thanks Willie. I realised we are doing BC Lite from next week so wanted to make sure I had plenty of veggies and salad bits in - and to get some belly pork to roast. Cant get pork scratchings round here for love nor money! DH got the last two packets in our local garage the other night - Im rationing myself. Grin

Tesco have stopped stocking them, M&S do a vile version with lots of added carbs! and OCado dont seem to be stocking them either...

BIWI · 11/05/2013 16:58

You could always make your own, Jax!

Thank you for that confirmation on timescale for bootcamp BIWI and as soon as I'd asked about diet coke I realised the no sweeteners!! Oh dear...I think that will be the hardest thing - no coffee as I need sugar! I AM GOING TO DO THIS THOUGH!±!!!! I have too!!

BIWI · 11/05/2013 17:03

Just remember - you don't need sugar! That is the carb addiction speaking.

TreeLuLa · 11/05/2013 17:12

Well I am back to report that I went to a child's birthday party this afternoon and managed to resist every one of a table heaving with delicious carbs - from hula hoops to chocolate brownies. I am staying strong because last time I reached this weight I fell completely off the wagon and it has taken me 2 months to get back here!

Thanks BIWI for the articles - I don't know why, but I felt somehow that I should be losing 4-5 lbs every week - if a 1-2 lb loss is normal, then no wonder my weight loss has slowed down so much from the first few weeks.

Also, it is good to hear that it took a year to lose 2 stones. I have another 4 to lose, but will be chuffed if I manage to lose 1-3 more this year - I swore to myself that I would end this year lighter than I started it.

Going the right way so far! It's my birthday at the end of the month - I want to get down to the next stone by then - 4 lbs to lose so I think it is realistic! Grin

WillieWaggledagger · 11/05/2013 17:23

bravo treelula on resisting temptation!

TreeLuLa · 11/05/2013 17:36
Grin

Thank you!

One day, I may be able to eat one slice of cake, but today is not that day!

BIWI · 11/05/2013 17:37

TreeLuLa - as someone once posted, this is a marathon not a sprint!

Very well done for resisting all those goodies nasty carbs.

OP posts:
TreeLuLa · 11/05/2013 17:41

Was it wrong that I kept thinking of the phrase 'sugary twats'

seems a bit unfair to label four-year olds thus!

Grin
CiderwithBuda · 11/05/2013 17:43

Right. This may well be TMI but I am def constipated. Have just 'been' but could have done with an epidural and forceps!

Am drinking lots of water and eating lots of veg and salad. I had flaxseed this morning. I know magnesium is supposed to help so will pop some of that. I also have an aloe Vera colon cleanse supplement that I will start taking tonight.

Any other tips?

BIWI · 11/05/2013 17:46

More fat!

Strong coffee
High strength Vitamin C

And a surefire bet is Thornton's Sugar-free toffee! Just don't eat the whole packet like I did once. I strained a muscle with the explosive diarrhoea that it led to ... Grin

if you want a big fat boost, you can make a 'fat bomb' - there are various recipes to be found online, but i make one that doesn't contain sweetener - it's about 90% fat. it's not bootcamp friendly as it contains almond butter, and the texture might not be for everyone, but i like it:

2 tsp butter
2 tsp coconut oil
2 tsp almond butter

melt together in a saucepan over a very very low heat, stirring well, this only takes a minute or two. pour into a small container (i use silicone bun cases - the quantities above will fill one and will be one portion) and put in the freezer for an hour or so to firm up. i store them in the freezer and eat them without defrosting

i only recently bought coconut oil as a vegan cafe has opened at the bottom of my road and i happened to find it in there (along with shirataki noodles which i haven't tried yet), and i'm not that keen on cooking with it, but i love it raw straight out of the jar and in a fat bomb
