2013 Weight Watchers over here!

The previous thread title and OP wad intended for information only, but as a few people arrived wanting a bit of mutual support, I thought a more specific thread title might be in order, esp if there's anyone else wanting to join in. I think the cashback deal on online membership expires now, anyway.

Can you introduce yourselves with a quick summary of your aims, please?

I'll be doing Weight Watchers online only. DS is nearly 10 weeks and I'm BFing, so I get 40PPs a day, plus the weeklies. I'm not sure how easily the weight will come off with that amount, but can't cut down any further yet.

I have 3 1/2 st to lose altogether. I'm currently 12st 7lb and was 10st pre-DC after previous success with WW. I'd like to go a bit further this time.

My short term goal is to be a bit slimmer for a family wedding next month. Unfortunately I'm the gat cousin and need any extra confidence I can get.

My WI is Thursday. So far, so good. I'm snacking but sticking to my PPs + weeklies. Struggling to get much exercise due to two poorly DCs, but hoping to find time for a DVD today.

OP posts:

Recipe thread looks great. Will have a proper read through. Started a new job today. I am proud of myself for not having an emotional eating response to it - I treat myself for coping with first day nerves!

I am going to email WW to ask about my PP change. Had a search on their website but it doesn't really explain it.

OhTheConfusion · 05/02/2013 20:59

Thanks Jazzcat... I have just measured out 4lb's of butter to show DH... man I am sad!

essexgirl31 · 05/02/2013 21:01

Confusion - re read your comment. I think you may be right about a mistake. At least I have been given a couple of extra points rather than had them taken away!

OhTheConfusion · 05/02/2013 21:24

Essex I weighed in at 14st 10lb today and have 32pp (remember I am shorter than you) so I think the 29pp sounds about right, definately think there has been a mistake the first week.

Well done on the 6lb loss!!!

MagdalenVanstone · 05/02/2013 21:30

Cider and confusion, great losses well done!

I was also 4lbs off today so very pleased with that, although I have (literally) worked my bum off at the gym this week.

Living I am sorry for your loss.

Jazzcat carbonara recipe thank you!

As today was my fourth week weigh in I have been thinking about what I have found useful product wise, and what I really haven't.

I thought I'd post it in case it is useful for anyone, but I'll do it below in another post as it would make this one massive!

OhTheConfusion · 05/02/2013 21:31

P.S Essex, even bigger congratulations on the no stress eating!

I am a completely emotional eater too. I have been trying to go a walk with my ipod in everytime I need to think, de-stress, feel the need to nibble etc. In the 20min it takes me to do a quick mile circuit and is something I can do from work, with DD in the pushchair or at night and DH barely misses me and manages to make a cuppa or run a bath in that time.

essexgirl31 · 05/02/2013 21:33

Thank you! A great start. I will use the 29 PP (until i actually get round to emailing WW) and see what happens. 6lb probably came off as I was eating less than I should have been. I am not complaining though!!

essexgirl31 · 05/02/2013 21:33

And we'll done on your loss too!

MagdalenVanstone · 05/02/2013 21:43

Things I've found useful to help me have a treast yet still stick to my points:

Weight watchers Choc digestives- 1pp each and really nice. They have a bit off the back shaved in so you are getting less calories but pschologically it still seems like quite a big biscuit!

Snack a jacks salt and vinegar flavour - 2pp a bag from a multipack and gives me the idea i'm eating crisps

Curly wurly's -3pp each (learnt on this thread, thank you!)

Minstrels- 5 are 1pp or 10 for 2pp

Mini babybel light 1pp each (again learnt on this thread and the single best tip for me, has saved me on numerous stilton craving evenings

Tuc biscuits for the above- 1pp for 2

Ww west country cream 30g-1pp- this is really very nice and a lot like cream

Sainsburys 1/3rd less fat sausages - I can't really tell they are less fat

Sainsburys no added sugar instant custard- best desert idea- roasted fruit with a 1/4 packet of this for 2pp

Ww crustless cheese and onion quiche 8pp but nice and I do like a good quiche!

Bacon medallions, I buy the sainsbury's ones and they are 2 for 1pp which feels like a lot of food for the point!

Things that have been a waste of money or I haven't liked:

Ww half fat butter- beyond vile DO NOT BE TEMPTED it is chemical tasting horriblness

Ww Cheese flavour bites 2pp - see above, I was led to believe they would be
like mini cheddars, or how wrong I was

Ww salt and vinegar hoops 2pp - ok but dry and nowhere near as nice as snack a jacks, in my opinion!

WW Bagels - yes they are only 4pp but they are a bit grim and I much prefer new York bagel company wholemeal bagel ½ of one = 4 points and its wholemeal and half is as filling as a whole ww one

WW Oat and Wheat Crackers- fall apart when you try and eat them, pointless really when 4 are the same pp as tuc biscuits which are yum

Sainsburys be good to yourself chicken korma with rice- strange elasticy textured chicken oddness, I'm not sure what they had done to it

Meringue with yogurt and fruit- an idea from the ww magazine. I thought I had a sweet tooth till I tried this. Its like eating sugar from the bag, much too sweet for me.

Most useful discovery:
Sainsburys Be Good to Yourself and Morrisons NUME ranges put the weight watchers points value on all these products, so if I'm out and need a sandwich or quick ready meal etc I can grab one of these without having to work out the points.

Hope that was useful to someone and not just a waste of space Smile

I would be really interested to see other people's best buys and avoids!

SallyBear · 06/02/2013 07:40

Wahoo! I've lost 5lbs!! I know that I've had a flu thing, but I've been eating normally for the last two days and the 5lbs loss that I saw on Sunday, is still there today. Wahooooooooooo!

So much for DH and his theory of "fluid loss"! Tsk!! GrinGrinGrinGrin

NoWayNoHow · 06/02/2013 07:44

Morning all, and congratulation cider, ohtheconfusion and magdalen on your AMAZING losses! Well done!!

Living so sorry for your loss Sad

Glad to see the recipe thread growing - it's nice to have new ideas!

Just a quick question! Yet another Nandos trip today (DS is obsessed with the place, and DH is out tonight so thought I'd treat us). According to the tracker, the 1/4 chicken breast is 9pp, however, if you trac it according to the nutritional info they give for it on the Nandos website, it comes us as 3pp?

The 1/4 leg is apparently 6pp (on both the Nandos site and the WW site), and although the chicken breast is bigger, the chicken leg is a lot more fatty and has a huge amount more skin which would support the Nandos pp value.

Do we know how accurate WW are with their pp values for eating out?

NoWayNoHow · 06/02/2013 07:45

Oh my goodness, x-post with sallybear - well done! That's amazing! Are you feeling better?

SallyBear · 06/02/2013 08:03

NoWay, getting there. Venturing out for the first time today in 8 days. When DS4 was ill the GP said it wasn't flu, just a flu like virus. It was bloody flu! DS1 has it now and he is so poorly with it, poor boy.

Anyway delighted with the loss. Better than my first week!

Nando's. do they deep fry, or is it grilled. I've never been, not my thing really. What I would do is just point it as a chicken breast with Nando's dietary info from the pp calculator if the margin for error is so big. Every point counts, right?!Smile

onthemetro · 06/02/2013 09:00

Well done Sally! What a great loss Smile hope a little fresh air will make you feel a bit better today.

Magdalen, that's a great post, thank you! I agree about the WW bagels, I've started having the NY ones and they're so much nicer, and bigger. If I remember correctly they're 6pp for a whole one (the original kind) so only 2pp more than the WW bagel. So they're great if you've got the extra 2pp to spare.

I caught a train at London St Pancras on Tuesday and was so pleased that the WH Smith there sells little boxes of grapes. I was about to get a cereal bar which would've been 4 or 5pp I didn't really have to spare, so I snapped up the grapes instead. And now I have a little box to put grapes in when I go to work. Grin

OhTheConfusion · 06/02/2013 09:23

Wooohooo Sallybear! It is nice when being ill gives something back Wink. Hope your DS is better soon. DD1 and DH have a bug Sad... the rest of us are still ok so fingers crossed it passes us over.

Noway, not sure what the tru points are but I tend to go with the higher value as im viewing it as a treat so in my mind it is already a higher PP value and then I know I have not gone over my PP's. My nandos downfall is hummus and drizzle with pitta [said as I eat branflakes!].

Magdalen, I agree about the ww crackers... they are VILE!!! I would rather have 2 cream crackers than 4 of them any day!

I LOVE...

Sainsburys low fat mature chedder 2pp for 25g and its more than enough with 2 crackers and fruit so a 4pp treat.

M&S Guilt Free Snacking - Sweet and salty popcorn 2pp a bag - Honeycombe crunch squares 3pp each and a real choc fix - Chocolate cornflake bite bags (3 in bag) 3pp a bag.

Activia low fat peach yogurt 2pp.

WW malted loaf... 1pp a slice!

NoWayNoHow · 06/02/2013 09:34

Grr, very irritated with WW tracker this morning... I've been tracking my German rye bread according to their info for 1 slice - 1pp. Just pointed the german rye bread I have and it's 3pp a slice! So basically, I've been overeating by 4pp every single day without knowing!

My only hope is that that I was doing it last week too and I still lost, so hopefully I've not done too much damage. I just wish their info was accurate, what with Nandos and now this - don't know if I'm coming or going!! Don't they have anyone moderating/checking? Or is it just easier to take our money and let us muddle through unknowingly?

Rant over!

bigTillyMint · 06/02/2013 11:28

German rye bread is delish, and good for you, but you were hopeful pping it for 1pp when normal Grin

Has anyone got any idea which cocktails would be lowest on pp's?Smile

SallyBear · 06/02/2013 11:48

Gin/Vodka and slimline tonic 2pp as its 2pp per single serving of gin.

CiderwithBuda · 06/02/2013 12:00

living - very sorry for your loss. I missed that post yesterday for some reason. Hope you are ok.

Great losses confusion, Magdalen and Sally - well done!

That flu sounds horrid Sally. Keep it to yourself please! Smile

Great post magdalen - agree with a lot. I have to say the suggestion of meringue with yoghurt made my teeth itch at the thought of the sweetness. However I do love a broken up meringue with squirty cream and strawberries. Very yum.

NoWay - I know what you mean about the point values on the tracker. I did have the rye bread at 4 pp a slice at one point but now it comes up as 2pp per slice for 'German style rye bread'. And they don't have it as a filling and healthy food which makes no sense. I also had about three different values given for 60g of smoked salmon the other day!

I had a quick look in the Eat Out book for Nandos. The quarter chicken breast is given as 3 pp for a plain chicken breast. Half a plain chicken is 9.

We had the HD chicken stew last night. It was nice but the liquid needed thickening. I think I will add barley next time to absorb some liquid. DH liked it although insisted on mashed potatoes with it. Has agreed to mashed cauliflower next time.

NoWayNoHow · 06/02/2013 12:26

BigTilly I had completely deluded myself that rye bread must be SO healthy and filled with fibre that the carbs were virtually negligible!! Maybe white spirit based cocktails with no mixers would be good? Like a Martini?

Cider thanks so much for confirming the 3pp chicken breast quarter scenario - if the Eating Out Guide matches the Nandos site nutritional info then I feel a lot more confident tracking it as such!

bigTillyMint · 06/02/2013 13:07

Sally - yes, gin and slimline is my tipple of choice, but this is proper, full-on cocktails....

Noway, I am liking the idea of spirit-only cocktails - will only take one for me to be under the tableGrin

SallyBear · 06/02/2013 13:19

Frozen strawberry daiquiri is 4pp (who knew!) or a Martini is 6pp. Long Island iced tea is 7pp all 250ml servings.

G&T is still a cocktail, just a more genteel one compared to Sex on the beach or a screwdriver GrinGrin

chillyigloo · 06/02/2013 13:19

WI last night and lost 0.5lb. I'm actually pleased with it after a very indulgent week (Pringlegate!) Even though I genuinely did track every mouthful, I used all my weeklies twice over so I was prepared for a slight gain and would have been ecstatic with staying the same, so 1/2 off made me do a little 'whoop', especially as it was the 1/2 I needed to get my first half stone Grin

Trying to be more active this week and went ahead and ordered the Jillian Michael "30 minute shred" DVD after hearing amazing things. Should be here tomorrow so we'll see how that goes. I think I remember it being mentioned on here earlier in the thread.

DS dropped at preschool so I should take the opportunity to go for a jog or something, but it's literally the only 2.5hours in my week with no children and/or work so for today I may treat myself to a Brew, a Biscuit and a sit down before I tackle the mountain of ironing. I know you can get activity points from hoovering but I think ironing should be worth at least 5 AP's for tediousness!

Smile
bigTillyMint · 06/02/2013 13:44

Ooh, frozen strawberry daiquari sounds yum. And I like long island iced teaSmile thanks!

And I am very genteel, of courseWink

Chilly, I have the Shred and did it last year - prepare to be bulldozed! I will do it again after half term....

flatmouse · 06/02/2013 16:09

Congrats to Sally and all you others for fab WI's. I'm still recovering from Monday's over-enthusiastic L1D1 shred! (Really need to do L1D2 today but don't know if i can!!)

How's about Elderflower Collins? 1 part elderflower cordial, 2 parts gin, plenty of ice, squeeze fresh lemon top up glass with soda water. Makes it a long drink - very refreshing.
