Week 3 Little Black Dress Low Carb Bootcamp - or Bootcamp Light!

BigBroomstickBIWI · 15/10/2012 08:59

Morning all!

Hopefully everyone has had a good couple of strict weeks, and the scales have rewarded you.

[[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmNIskihgXotdFVPcF9zWUhIal9BbTl5SnlTM3BlWVE#gid=0 Here is the link to the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness. Enter your weight for today if you haven't already.

We're now ready to move on to Bootcamp Light - if you wish. If you're happy to stay on Bootcamp, then that's fine. Or, perhaps you want to do the hybrid of Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend?

Whatever, here are the rules of Bootcamp Light:

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
"Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
"Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs. Sainsbury?s sell little bags of roasted, salted Macadamias that work out at around 4g per bag.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:
Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

Good luck for the forthcoming week!

Thanks Dosh for the braised cabbage recipe. Must give that a go. I've got baby greenish cabbage, but I assume it'll work with that just as well as white cabbage.
Now I need to plan a main to go round it for tomorrow!

BigBroomstickBIWI · 15/10/2012 20:27

tempertemper - just watch out for those cherries - they are 11.5g carbs per 100g, so very, very carby. What with the berries at breakfast and the chocolate, you could have had a lot of carbs today.

Evening everyone. Well done on all your great lossesGrin.

Today has been a good day, I've been really strict with myself after yesterday's wobble. So far I've had:
B - Kale crisps
L - Eggs in purgatory
D - Shepherds Pie with swede mash
A bit of cheddar for snacking on, so I'll make sure to have a heartier breakfast tomorrow.

I'm loving all the dresses, just looking around for one for me now. I'm going to wait before ordering though - want to shift a bit more weight first Smile

tempertemper · 15/10/2012 20:34

Buggery bollocks. That explains why I am feeling so snacky.

Will draw a line under today and ditch fruit from tomorrow. Have awful sugar issues and find it creeps in...I find it so hard to not want something sweet after a meal.

HavingAnOffDAy · 15/10/2012 21:04

Thanks for the new thread. Just marking my place as I have another week of boot camp to do.

I enjoyed last week Smile this week will be more of a challenge as I'm working away again, but I love this WOE which definitely helps me stick to it.

Well done everyone

BigBroomstickBIWI · 15/10/2012 21:50

OMG - I've been experimenting, and I've just created something absolutely fabulous.

I'll have to work out the quantities/carbs properly - but if you want an indulgent treat/snack this may well hit the spot! This is roughly what I did:

1 dessert spoon peanut butter
2 dessert spoons Total full fat yoghurt
1/4 teaspoon vanilla bean extract

Mix the lot together then shove in your gob!

It doesn't sound like much, but it's incredibly rich and the texture means it's incredibly satisfying.

I reckon it's probably about 4g carbs? I wonder, also, if it would freeze so you could make a parfait/ice-cream with it?

NigellasGhost · 15/10/2012 22:03

wow BIWI that sounds fabulous!
something with a crunch!

NewStartSameStory · 15/10/2012 22:04

never thought she'd ask this but Smooth or crunchie peanut butter?

BigBroomstickBIWI · 15/10/2012 22:08

I used smooth because that was what I had in the cupboard! I seem to remember I bought that one because it was slightly lower in carbs than the crunchy one.

BIWI am gutted for you re Briffa- was looking forward to being there vicariously. If they do another date then the traveling for those of us in the north shoud be considered. There were no trains getting into London before 11am! I hope they reschedule though

Jins · 15/10/2012 23:11

I'd have loved to have done the Academy thing but I don't do London :(

SingingTunelessly · 15/10/2012 23:13

Signing in to new thread. 1lb off. I am Bootcamp Lite so happy enough.

Loving all the dresses and Bloss those shoes are fab. I'm 5.2 so wear heels all the time.

Such a shame about the Dr Briffa chat but please can it be arranged for a day other than a Sunday? Like Wine, I haven't got a train that gets in before 11.

B. 2 x bacon, fried egg and mushrooms. Coffee with cream.

S. Babybel.

D. Cabbage, celeriac, cauliflower and fennel leftover from yesterday mixed together topped with cheese grilled until crispy and brown and two lamb chops. Delicious. glass of red

3ltrs of water.

Viperidae · 15/10/2012 23:13

WineGless I was just about to post the same, I would have loved to go to the Briffa day but would have had to travel down the day before and stay over, which made it just too much in terms of hassle and money. I get rather cross that everything is always in London.

Have been good today except for a Diet Coke as I was out and missed my normal lunchtime.

B: Sausage and egg scramble
L: None / Diet Coke
Snack : Kale crisps, a few prawns and mayo
T: Prawn wonton soup, duck breast, salad

I had a random question. How much veg should we be eating? I suppose I'm a bit brainwashed by the '5 a day' and have been trying to have quite a lot but wondered if that was right or not. I've been struggling to get enough to compensate for not having fruit.

butterfliesinmytummy · 16/10/2012 06:11

Settling into this and I'm not even feeling partial to berries or nuts.... Evening a friends house has been cancelled tonight so have managed to avoid drinks and snacks, good day all round so far.

Do I have the right total full fat yoghurt? Mine is nearly 8g carbs a pot..... Haven't eaten any yet as I don't fancy it but was surprised at the carbs in it... My kids eat munch bunch squashums (the yogurts in strawberry shaped pouches) - def not carb friendly but the same amount of carbs as total full fat plain yogurt. I don't live in the uk ... Have I got a different type of total here? How many carbs in a uk pot of full fat total?

BigBroomstickBIWI · 16/10/2012 06:32

Viper - is that a Diet Coke I see creeping into your day ...

re veg, don't worry about the 5 a day - it's a marketing myth.

As long as you are eating veg salad with your meals, you will be fine. Although looking at your day yesterday, it doesn't look like you had enough!

If you read Gary Taubes' book "The Diet Delusion", he puts forward an argument that says we don't actually need vegetables for nutrition at all. A bit of a step too far, I think.

Zoe Harcombe on 5 a day

dotty2 · 16/10/2012 06:34

tempertemper - me too re. the something sweet after a meal. I have been experimenting with lots of herb teas and find I like the Pukka Detox one, which has aniseed, fennel and cardomon in it and sounds like a poor substitute for pudding but is intriguing enough to satisfy.

sybilfaulty · 16/10/2012 06:35

Hello everyone

STS for me, but I went off the rails at the weekend so to be expected. At least I didn't put any on! Enjoying the chat and the recipes. Celeriac dauphinoise must be the biggest hit in our house. Even DH loves it and he was very rude about cauliflower rice.

Lavendersbluedillydilly1969 · 16/10/2012 06:48

Just got up and weighed myself and Ive put 2lbs on overnight Shock. Why would this happen? I didn't eat anything carby yesterday apart from a bit of homemade cauliflower cheese but only used cream and cheese for sauce, and I drank loads of water. Very fed up now, it's put a dampened on my day. I don't mind not losing so much but to put on is not good.

butterflyexperience · 16/10/2012 06:54

My TOM arrived yest and I weighed myself this morning and I'm back to 9.10!
Whoo hoo!
So didn't lose any weight last week but didn't gain either which is big plus :)

Also I have a few people comment that I have lost weight!! So am very chuffed Grin

WineGless · 16/10/2012 07:25

Lavender have you erm "been"?

I've lost1lb this week so chuffed about that.

SingingTunelessly · 16/10/2012 07:25

Butterflies, is the a large pot of yoghurt? If that is the carb count for 500g or something that's ok because you won't eat the whole lot in on go. So carb count per portion is fine.

Lavenders, you're a daily weigher like me then?! Wink. This is why we're not supposed to do it. Honestly, if you're sticking to plan (especially Bootcamp) it's just one of those blips. TOM due maybe? Don't let it get you down. I'm still losing a pound or so a week and I am definitely a Bootcamp Lite. due to wine

SkaffenAmtiskaw · 16/10/2012 07:39

2lbs down! Not much but better than nothing...

butterfliesinmytummy · 16/10/2012 07:56

No it's a 200g pot which is a slightly big portion for 1.....

WineGless · 16/10/2012 08:10

Is anyone else having one of those mornings?

So far DD has wet the bed so had to throw her in shower. Cane downstairs to find cat has weed somewhere but can't locate exact spot, but even better has puked on my clothes that I was going to wear today
