Week 3 Little Black Dress Low Carb Bootcamp - or Bootcamp Light!

BigBroomstickBIWI · 15/10/2012 08:59

Morning all!

Hopefully everyone has had a good couple of strict weeks, and the scales have rewarded you.

[[https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AmNIskihgXotdFVPcF9zWUhIal9BbTl5SnlTM3BlWVE#gid=0 Here is the link to the Spreadsheet of Wonderfulness. Enter your weight for today if you haven't already.

We're now ready to move on to Bootcamp Light - if you wish. If you're happy to stay on Bootcamp, then that's fine. Or, perhaps you want to do the hybrid of Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend?

Whatever, here are the rules of Bootcamp Light:

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
"Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
"Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs. Sainsbury?s sell little bags of roasted, salted Macadamias that work out at around 4g per bag.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:
Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

Good luck for the forthcoming week!

Ewan - mine has gone awol again but as my cycle is all over the place anyway it is hard to tell the cause.

as expected weight gain 3kg. Being strict with water and meals today. and hope to be back on track.

B: Alpro yoghurt and scrambled eggs.

Doshusallie · 15/10/2012 10:56

ooh VNMUM what colour?

pound down from last week's weigh in, so I am starting week at 9 2, so aiming for 9 1 by the end of the week.

I love the way BIWI asked quietly for people to move to new thread. and no-one did, until SHE SHOUTED! Sounds like my house every morning.

2 egg, 2 bacon and mushrooms for breakfast. with a DTWLFM, a pint of berrocca and a pint of water.

Have had a decaf black coffee and another pint of water at the office so far.

Viperidae · 15/10/2012 11:13

Well I weighed myself on Friday and was down 6lb on last week so thought I would allow myself to cheat when out for dinner that night. Sadly it didn't end there as I woke up craving cereal on Saturday then ate all the wrong stuff from the Indian on Saturday night.

Weighed Sunday am and was back up 5 of the 6 I had lost (waaaaah!) so went straight back to being good yesterday and am down 2 of those today so an overall loss of 3.

Lesson to self: was it worth it? NO. I still have stones and stones to lose
Anyway, onward and upward downward.

Am off shopping with DD now and we are going to an out of town shopping place that has a Waitrose Shock, they're as rare as unicorns oop north so am very excited.

DIYapprentice · 15/10/2012 11:34

vnum - I know. Sad I'm giving myself until Wed morning and if it isn't clearing I will go to GP. 3 - 5 days is how long it takes for a bout of bronchitis to pass naturally if it doesn't go to bacterial infection. Fingers crossed that's all that will happen. Had a really bad bout last winter, and was on some pretty heavy duty drugs for it. Hoping my body is strong enough to kick this one on it's own.

NewStart - instead of thinking of it as a weight gain, think of your TRUE weight loss as being 5 kgs over 2 weeks. Which is still damn impressive!!!

Just scared myself - did a little bit of reading about ketosis, and apparently if you have too much protein in your diet you may not go into ketosis, even if you have a low carb intake.

frumpet · 15/10/2012 11:38

Congratulations to everyone who has lost some . Feel better with 6llbs off , although got another 5 stone to go , i even think at some angles my boobs might be sticking out slightly further than my stomach Grin

caramelwaffle · 15/10/2012 11:41

Congratulations on your losses or maintenance everyone.

2.6 lb down

3-4 weeks ago I was up to almost 12 1/2 stones Hmm

So pleased

Will move to Bootcamp Light and will be pleased with 2lb loss a week from now.

Can we have some honey or maple syrup for yoghurt?

Please say yes. Please say yes Grin

BigBroomstickBIWI · 15/10/2012 11:47

NO! Honey and maple syrup are just sugar!

DIY - that's why you need to eat more fat. Protein provokes a release of insulin (although much, much less than carbs) whereas fat doesn't.

toomuchmonth - but you have still lost 9lbs in two weeks! That is fantastic going, honestly! That's 18 packs of lard.

Hi all, well done to all the losers :)

I haven't been able to weigh myself this morning due to technical problems, hopefully will be able to tomorrow morning.

Good luck for the week ahead!

bucksmum · 15/10/2012 12:17

1lb off for me this week which is a bit disappointing but I lost massively last week so probably right. Keeping up with bootcamp for another couple of weeks and increasing excercise!

HumphreyCobbler · 15/10/2012 12:21

hello all
marking my spot
still feeling thin and judging by my clothes I am still losing Smile
still not got the nerve to weigh Blush

noddyholder · 15/10/2012 12:27

I am amazed I lost any but feeling motivated now.Very stressful week last week and caved and had wine saturday Back on teh wagon today.

NotAgainAndAgain · 15/10/2012 12:30

I will stick to the bootcamp too. I just lost my first couple of pounds!
Keep posting dresses - it does work!!!
I want to get into my size 8 number, being in comfy 10 for ages. Just can't make myself buy the whole outfit for family wedding - especially the one in the wardrobe was out only once I paid my right arm and half the boeing for it.
At the moment it is still tight. But hey, I still have some time before I just go no food at all to fit in it.

NotAgainAndAgain · 15/10/2012 12:33

toomuchmonth - wow! that's my hero! lost 9lbs in two weeks

NigellasGhost · 15/10/2012 12:37

I'm down 1lb - very happy with that.
Aiming to lose 1lb per week and so far so good!

feeling thin just like Humph - I'm wearing some jeans today that haven't seen the light of day for quite some time.

cartblanche · 15/10/2012 12:48

Put on a pound - not at all surprised because I fell off the wagon. Will rein myself in this week. Another week of bootcamp for me.

DIYapprentice · 15/10/2012 13:07

When does it get easier????!!! Just went into town to get some medicines for myself and DSs, and popped into M&S to get some easy food for us all. I was absolutely tormented by the chocolates and pastries!!!! Sad

I so very nearly succumbed, but told myself that I had a choice and to simply give in to a craving would simply be me making a bad choice, but a choice nevertheless.

Doshusallie · 15/10/2012 13:16

DIY eating on the run and easy snacks at home when you haven't planned are the hardest things on this WOE.

Lunch: olives, tuna with mayo, 1 boiled egg, pate and cucumber, roasted courgettes and aubergine, 1 small pit of cheese and roasted veg frittata.

tartiflette · 15/10/2012 13:18

Yes another couple of weeks' bootcamp for me, although may allow drink or two at the weekend.

Ilovemyteddy · 15/10/2012 13:19

DIY - chocolate I can understand, but pastries - eww! They are just carb-loaded puffs of air. Resist! It does get easier - honest. I just had the loveliest egg and ham salad from M&S (minus the salad cream) for my lunch with a bit of cheese since we are on Bootcamp lite. Scrummy.

DH bought home a slice of raspberry and amaretto gateau from Waitrose at the weekend. I had a tiny bite and it was so sweet it made my teeth itch!

Ewan - I saw your loose knickers comment on the other thread Grin Tescos do really cheap boy shorts (for everyday comfy wear) and they tend to shrink with you so it might be worth investing in a few pairs before you hit the fancy lingerie stores!

I was so relieved to see the scales had moved this morning - just over 3lbs off last week. To the people who have a lot to lose - please stick with it. I am 60lbs down now since January. Some weeks are more difficult than others but it does come off if you stick with it.

DIYapprentice · 15/10/2012 13:28

Ilovemyteddy -the offending pastry involved lots of chocolate bits and custard....... the other pastries didn't tempt me at all. Grin

I bought some extra nice double cream (west country or some such) and some blueberries and raspberries. So saving them for a treat after dinner and after the DSs are in bed.

Ilovemyteddy · 15/10/2012 13:32

Mmm custard - now you're talking Grin

Doshusallie · 15/10/2012 13:51

I think I am staying on bootcamp (although as BIWI says it's pretty much lite for me as I do imbibe the odd gin or 9). I want to see if I can get to the 8s....

Jins · 15/10/2012 13:54

proper custard...

eggs, cream, sweetener, vanilla

Not the worst thing you could have although not on bootcamp.

vnmum · 15/10/2012 14:26

Dosh I am thinking of the bluey colour. I am dark haired so think it will complement nicely

Ilovemyteddy · 15/10/2012 14:33

I hadn't thought about proper custard Jins It could be allowable...

vnmum that dress is gorgeous!
