Week 3 Little Black Dress Low Carb Bootcamp - or Bootcamp Light!

Hopefully everyone has had a good couple of strict weeks, and the scales have rewarded you.

We're now ready to move on to Bootcamp Light - if you wish. If you're happy to stay on Bootcamp, then that's fine. Or, perhaps you want to do the hybrid of Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend?

Whatever, here are the rules of Bootcamp Light:

1. Eat when you?re hungry - if you?re not hungry, don?t eat
In Bootcamp, you should have been eating three meals a day. The point of this being to ensure that you got used to eating proper meals, and so that your blood sugar is regulated and stable. Having achieved that, you can now relax this a little bit. If you find you?re not hungry - which often happens, because ketosis suppresses your appetite - then don?t force yourself to eat. But don?t let yourself get so hungry that you make inappropriate choices! Always make sure you have plenty of low carb food to access quickly, if you need to.

2. Avoid processed food
Focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals ? meat/fish/eggs.
You may include processed meats like bacon or (low carb) sausages, smoked salmon, smoked mackerel, gammon - but please don?t have these at every meal or every day. As well as being highly processed they often contain undesirable ingredients, can add unnecessary extra carbs into your diet, and often include sugar.

3. Eat lots of fat
Eating fat helps to keep you feeling fuller for longer. Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though, as this is too sweet and has too many carbs), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat ? e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind

4. Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food
This is where the bulk of your carbs should come from, and this is non-negotiable. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don?t have to weigh/count carbs ? this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you?re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat.

Beware that some of the veg on the allowed list can be surprisingly high in carbs once you make up a portion of it ? this is because they are denser, and therefore you tend to use more ? compare, for example, 100g of onion with 100g lettuce! Keep your focus on those veg which contain 3g carbs per 100g and use these as the focus of your meals. Use those over 3g per 100g sparingly.

5. You may eat some dairy
You should aim to include plenty of butter on this WOE. Fry with it and add it to your vegetables. And if you know that dairy doesn?t impede your weight loss you may eat cheese, but don't overdo it. Full fat yoghurt is the best way to include dairy in your diet - but beware, it does contain carbs. Total Full Fat is the best.

If you?ve been cutting out tea/coffee, you can re-introduce this ? but just be careful how much milk you end up drinking. You can end up adding a lot of extra carbs this way.

6. You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day
Even if you?re drinking more tea/coffee than in Bootcamp, this is still a non-negotiable part of this WOE. And the more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. Water helps to flush out the ketones that your body will product ? so flushing out the fat. However, drinking this amount of water can affect your electrolyte balance; you need to make sure that you get plenty of sodium and potassium. There is less need to worry about restricting salt if you?re eating a low carb diet. Good sources of potassium are salmon and avocado. You could also consider supplements if you have an issue with this.

7. You may drink some alcohol
But restrict this to once or twice a week max. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine. Absolutely no beer/lager, cider, liqueurs, cocktails or full sugar mixers. You can drink spirits with artificial sweeteners, but bear in mind that we are attempting to avoid all things artificial!

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for your body, and it will use this over and above anything else that is available to it. Therefore, even if you?re following the diet absolutely to the letter, including alcohol can prevent weight loss.

8. You may eat some fruit
"Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and rhubarb are all fine. But please ? only once a day at the very most, and keep an eye on your portion sizes. Just for information ? these are the carb counts:

Rhubarb ? 0.8g carbs per 100g (but don?t forget you will need to sweeten this ? and not with sugar!)
Blackberries ? 4.4g carbs per 100g
Raspberries ? 4.6g carbs per 100g
Strawberries ? 6g carbs per 100g
Blueberries - 6.4g carbs per 100g (although this is a bit controversial - I have had differing carb counts from various sources - some saying as much as 12g carbs per 100g)

9. You may eat some nuts/seeds
"Nuts/seeds can make a good snack. BUT it is incredibly easy to overdo it, and you can end up eating your bodyweight in carbs. As an occasional snack they are great, but keep it occasional and keep the portions to a small handful at most.

Macadamias are not only luscious, but they are very low in carbs. Sainsbury?s sell little bags of roasted, salted Macadamias that work out at around 4g per bag.

Here are some carb counts ? BUT ? check the back of your packets as I don?t know if these are for raw or roasted nuts:
Pistachios 4.6g carbs per 100g
Macadamias 4.8g carbs per 100g
Pecans 5.8g carbs per 100g
Almonds 6.9g carbs per 100g
Peanuts 7.1 g carbs per 100g
Cashews 18.1g carbs per 100g

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners
The aim of Bootcamp was to help reduce the stranglehold that sugar has on us ? and to curb your sweet tooth. But it does make some things difficult, e.g. desserts at a dinner party, and it is undeniable that it can be enjoyable ? occasionally ? to eat something sweet. However, restrict such goodies. For some people, artificial sweeteners can impede weight loss.

I have achieved a small victory tonight. I had salmon and salad (and two carrot batons so that DD thought we were having the same!!!) for tea, am marking books and was getting peckish. Thought F-it I'll have some toast, I've been rubbish anyway. Tested my blood sugars just to see and it was good after such a good dinner and so instead I had two pepperamis and now have a peppermint tea so that after that I won't want anything to eat! I know it isn't anything interesting, but DH isn't here and so I have no one else to tell!!!! Soz, as you were...

Will you not bd tempted with anything later? Only just finished tea had lamb chops with cauliflower and tender stem broccoli with bit if cheese grated on the veg

Trouble is BIWI there seem to have been a lot of those fuck it nights recently which don't help the scales to move. My downfall is always alcohol and emotional eating. Maybe time to change jobs to remove stressors. I really don't know.

Thanks Wine. No, usually after a peppermint tea I'm usually fine, it's a bit like brushing your teeth. If I have ordinary tea I'd want something definitely!!!

Take your time over decisions about jobs - it is difficult when you know fundamentally it is something that you love, but that the powers that be above you make it so difficult to do something and make a difference.

Need some advice please.

This Woe has been amazing for me. I have lost weight, my clothes are loser and friends have noticed that I have lost.
I also feel i have more bounce in my step, and have been feeling more energetic.

However my TOM started 4 days ago and is almost at an end. And since I felt PMTy and tom I have started to feel a bit low. Especially in the last few days.

Like yesterday and today I have eaten properly, but when it comes to the evening I crave white bread cheese sandwich and I'm having it.

I really dont know why Im doing it to myself when I have been doing so well.

I really do feel like shite.

Can anyone wave their magic wand and make it all better please?

Sorry to hear that wine gless Sad. Hope you can resolve things a bit. Do you have any influence over how things work out?

Ended up sharing a bottle of wine with dh and having leftover curry from last night, yet again avoiding most of the sauce and the peas without him really noticing.

Necking water now.

Haven't weighed for the last few days. Have no doubt that I am still 9 2, have deffo not lost any. Wine aside (only tonight) and the gin, and the peanut butter and 8 brazil nuts a week, I am stuck at this weight. Thankfully I like how much I can eat and am happy to be 9 2.

Going to friend for dinner tomorrow night, have zero control over menu......

When I feel like that the only way out of it is a bath and an early night

Waves at wine gless. Today was better, what's done is done, onwards and upwards etc. my boss rang and instead of grilling me was very sweet so that made me feel better.

I am in such awe of all of you with "proper" jobs....police people, teachers, midwives (where are you teaandthorazine?). My job seems so superfluous and arbitrary when you look at what you lot do. I wish I had had a vocation, or was clearer on what I had wanted to be. Did you all fall into it or did you know for an early age?

Thanks for wine & butterflies. Hope you both feel better soon. Wine - don't rush into decisions about your job. Give yourself a bit of time to think with a clear head. Have you got a run of a couple of days off when you can have a good think about things?

Dosh - I'm a student nurse now at the ripe old age of 31. It's a struggle at the mo - time and financially wise, but I love it. We've got ladies on our course in their 50's so I'd say if you fancy a change of direction it's definitely never too late.

On a slightly related note can I nag you all to give blood if you can manage it. After what's happened in Cardiff today (local to me, so very sad Sad ) stocks are low especially of O type blood so the blood banks both in England & Wales have put out an urgent appeal.

Foodwise, had nigella's meatzza for dinner. It was nice, but not amazing. I think I prefer cheesy lasagne which is similar but nicer imo.

Need to take stock and look at pros and cons. I really don't know how we stand financially but don't want to be miserable at work for the next 15 years.

Bloss I pretty much always wanted to join the police but had a different route to get there than the one I planned! I left school at 16 and worked in a post office until
I was 21 then joined up.
Regrets... I have a few..., does that sound like a song?!!

Hello all! I survived the personal trainer again!

I bought some almond butter yesterday and discovered that if I mix a teasponful into a couple of blobs of yoghurt it tastes a bit like something baked so had that with some rhubarb (and just a bit of sweetener) for breakfast. Had 1 rasher bacon, 1 poached egg and leftover roasted veg for lunch. Tea was rainbow trout, creamed leeks and samphire.

I have been noticing on here how many people are in caring professions - police, healthcare, teaching, etc. I wonder if we are all here because we care for others before ourselves.

Sorry to hear about your team Wine, we are like that in the NHS, as soon as you know what you are doing the next reorganisation comes along!

butterfly I also find that I just want to eat sometimes in the evenings. I think partly bad habits and also partly my body rebelling or thinking this is a diet. I also hate that I sometimes give into it (hence my excitement earlier when I didn't!!!). Some things you can try (after of course making sure your meals are full of fat and you are drinking tons of water and maybe taking a multi vitamin!)

  • make sure you have lots of low carb snacks and just graze all evening, I find after a week (or two max) my body stops wanting to snack or nibble quite so much. I have pork scratchings, pate on celery or cucumber, pepperamis, babybels, cooked low sausages, hard boiled eggs, cooked chicken legs, coleslaw with salami rolled around it (!)...
  • clean your teeth as soon after eating as possible
  • drink pepperminet tea or some kind of fruit or herbal tea - this works because I associate tea with toast and biscuits or chocolate late at night so by having something different I don't fancy it as it doesn't 'go'
  • go to bed as early as possible to minimise the craving period!

They are just some things that I find work for me, no idea if they help...

HurricaneWyn - good post about giving blood. My DH gives blood, but I can't as I had a transfusion when I had DD. It makes me very sad to think that I can't now give back after the kindness someone gave to me.

I would like to give blood but nobody can ever find my veins and whenever I need to have a blood test they have to get it out of the back of my hand which has put me off. Maybe I'll try though, my life is full of new experiences lately - healthy eating, exercise - another one won't hurt!

I haven't dared even look at the scales since my scare the other day but am still feeling bloated round my middle, not sure if it's my body adjusting to the WOE or my age.

Viper I used to have that as I have to do fasting blood tests - I was advised to drink tonnes if water before and so drink loads before going to bed and loads after. This definitely made a massive difference and I have been able to have it done 'normally' ever since. Sry if you already try that!

Dosh, good your boss was sympathetic. I know what you mean about vocational jobs. I'm in an industry I always thought I wanted to be in but am having doubts, possibly just because I'm bored (am overdue promotion according to my boss, but it's a big company and you have to fight the powers that be). I am looking elsewhere but there's not lots out there (financially viable at least). I am considering another degree, part time, for the intellectual stimulation - maths and statistics

On the other hand as dp points out, I have been able to use the time that I've been bored at work to concentrate in sorting out my eating habits and weight

Will explore giving blood. A van used to come to a workplace which was so good they should do that more, captive audience.

Half a bottle of wine = a pound up this morning. The dreaded 9 3, going in the wrong direction. Pissed off with that, wine really is my nemesis. More of it tonight as well as carby food, completely out of my control, so expect to be up again tomorrow and Monday. So frustrating.

Oh well will just see this weekend as a slip up and get back to 9 2 by mid next week hopefully.

Boiled eggs for brekkie.
