Here is the new, shiny thread. Only three weeks or so to go until we swing into really strict mode!

Oh and theres a picture of a steak recipe I found in a newspaper that looks interesting on my profile... not sure if its too sweet though but you could adapt it...

jan2011 · 09/09/2012 09:38

sharon thank you its lovely to check in with all you lovely ladies :) a bbq sounds lovely and its tough when u have exams looming - what are you studying? im going back to college in a few weeks pt

i love the frozen berries, i microwave them everymorning and have them with yoghurt. i will surely be going to lidl today. is there a minimum percentage of meat i should be looking for when im buying like chicken pieces, like should it always be 100% or is it ok to have like 75% meat? i don't want to be eating junk but i was a vegi before so its kind of new to me. lamb sounds good to try.

SharonGless · 09/09/2012 09:54

Chicken should be 100% as anything else will be processed. The cheaper cuts of chicken thighs and legs etc are really tasty on this woe and better as slightly fattier. Whole chickens were about £3 which will last a few days and you can make stock for soup if you want.
Have you got a slow cooker? Tis time of year they really come into their own.

vnmum · 09/09/2012 11:22

Whoever was asking about the pint of cream in the morning bloke, i can't remember the name of the blog but i am sure he called it a 'fat shake', so if you google that you may find the blog.

We have lovely weather again today so may go for a family bike ride.
I have finally managed to get DS to eat eggs for breakfast by scrambling them with cream and boursin so i can now drop the porridge so they are completely grain free although I do have a feeling that eggs will get boring after a while

Lorelilee · 09/09/2012 11:26

Here to confess - I had my first major falling off wagon yesterday (in 10 weeks and apart from my weekly bottle of vino), however, I did it in style and had a Big Mac and @ a third of a portion of chips. The result is one pound on today! Back onto the straight and narrow today!

teaandthorazine · 09/09/2012 11:53

Well, as predicted I did eat cheesecake last night. And ended up with a banging headache which necessitated co-codamol before I could sleep! Is it possible to get sugar headaches? It's like the opposite of withdrawal...

Anyway, feel ok today, lesson learned (yeah, right Grin). Lots of water today, have eaten almonds, a couple of slices of parma ham and some cream cheese on cucumber slices. BBQ tonight!

Absolutely second the Aldi/Lidl suggestion - they are FAB for low-carbing. There's an Aldi opening up about a mile away from me, can't wait!

dollyxdaydreamer · 09/09/2012 12:06

Thanks vnmum the fat shake pointer did the trick!

Erm...I have a bit of a "problem". I've not been to the toilet in 4 days Shock I've been eating loads of veg, but probably not drinking as much water as I should be. Should I be worried? Can I do anything to, er, help things along?

Thegoddessblossom · 09/09/2012 12:40

Dh - I need to lose some weight
Me - why don't you do low carb with me
Dh - why? You haven't lost any weight on it
Me - I have actually I've lost 4 pounds and am now maintaining
Dh - but you were often that weight before without denying yourself loads of things like you do now
Me - I had to eat less, and exercise more to stay at my ideal weight, plus I'm not 'denying myself' loads of food now, I eat huge frequent meals
Dh - yes you are, you don't eat fruit, you didn't join us all in pizza last night, you are dreading the meal I am cooking tonight because it will have parsnips in it, I don't cook us any of the lovely pasta dishes we used to love any more....and you haven't lost any more weight doing this than you did eating low fat.

I have listed unthread how much I love this woe but it is hard to defend in the above scenario.

Thegoddessblossom · 09/09/2012 12:41

Lunch: 2 slices of salami, cheese, cucumber. Coffee with cream.

dollyxdaydreamer · 09/09/2012 13:16

Thegoddessblossom could you get him to read the Briffa book or Toxic Waist (the main plot being wheat but it's essentially about all grains and insulin-promoting foods)? Would it help for him to see this woe not as what he would be giving up, but more in terms of what he would gain from a medical/health/science-based perspective?

vnmum · 09/09/2012 15:22

Tea You can definately get sugar headaches. WHen I have fallen off the wagon and had something quite high in sugar I also get a headache. It starts like a sugar buzz but then turns to a headache, I also get hot flushes and sometimes stomach cramps. Makes me wonder why I bother falling off the wagon when it makes me feel so bad but sometimes we don't remember that fact Smile

Talking of side effects of sugar/carbs, we went to a friends bbq on friday and there was bread, cookies, cakes etc. We have been feeding DC paleo and had cut out sugar and grains (apart from DS who still had porridge, DD was eating eggs for breakfast). DD (4) doesn't seem to have learnt to say no to cookies, sweets etc yet and ate some bread, cookies, haribo and popcorn. I didn't stop her beacause I didn't want to seem to be the over bearing controlling parent so thought I would let her learn how eating this stuff makes her body feel.
Well, she has learnt the hard way, today she has had diarrheoa and at first I thought it was too long after to be associated with friday night but DH says it can take 24 to 48 to affect his IBS so i'm guessing it is probably that. I have just had a word to try and explain that how she feels with her belly is because of bad food choices. Shall wait and see if she realises next time.

hurricanewyn · 09/09/2012 15:35

thegoddess - my dh was a bit sceptical at first, but when he saw I was losing he gave it a try (he had a lot less to lose than me, but was hating having to deprive himself on low fat). He's lost a stone in just over a month and, as of this morning, is now the same weight he was at 18. And I'm jealous.

Today I've had:
B - Cheese omlette
D- Roast beef, creamed spinach, broccoli & mashed cauliflower.

I also made vanilla ice cream from the recipe thread, but really didn't like it Sad. I made it with a teaspoon of truvia & it was too sweet, but also left a funny coating in my mouth. Has anyone else had the same?

OrangEyesDoMoreThanSee · 09/09/2012 15:43

I am here but banging heads together in my house atm

dollyxdaydreamer · 09/09/2012 16:19

I've just had the most delish lunch at my local Chef&Brewer. I had smoked salmon with a poached egg and rocket for starter (gave the toast to DC1), followed by a fillet steak with a wild mushroom peppercorn sauce, roast courgette (they'd run out of the fennel that was supposed to come with it) and celeriac chips - my first taste of celeriac and it was yum! All this followed by coffee with cream for desert. DH had apple pie and custard for desert which I love, but I totally didn't fancy it and was stuffed Grin

Who says eating out was difficult on this woe!

PrincessSparkle86 · 09/09/2012 16:20

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 09/09/2012 17:22

Princess, try Tesco Finest Toulouse-style sausages - v low in carbs.

hurricanewyn · 09/09/2012 17:23

Princess - I eat Sainsburys Taste the Difference outdoor bred pork sausages. They have 0.6g of carbs per sausage.

They're expensive though - £2.79 for 6, so they're an occasional treat.

AuntieMaggie · 09/09/2012 17:36

So last night I learned not to let DP mix me a drink... I have spent all day in bed recovering from my one alcoholic drink!

I haven't eaten all day just drank loads...

NigellasGuest · 09/09/2012 17:45

princess the Black Farmer sausages are low carb too

MrsHerculePoirot · 09/09/2012 17:55

I second black farmer sausages they are my favourite an they do chipolata ones too and mini cocktail ones which we cook for DD!

Thegoddessblossom · 09/09/2012 18:01

Jamie's are good and also his mate jimmy. Lowest I've found.

So not sure (again) what tea will be as couldn't get pork or parsnips (yay) as supermarket shut.

Am currently snacking on Brazil's and red wine.

BIWI · 09/09/2012 18:19

Evening all! Lovely to see you back here, jan - I hope things are going well for you. Smile

An overnight trip to the PILs down near Bath for us. I kept the carbs under control successfully by making sure that I cooked dinner for us all last night - my MIL finds it increasingly difficult to cook for more than the two of them, so she is always more than happy for me to do it. I did the Spanish Chicken from the IPD Recipe book, and served it with green beans, salad (and new potatoes for the others).

Unfortunately, my carb intake was then massively increased by over-consumption of Champagne and wine - it was our 22nd wedding anniversary yesterday, so we were celebrating that! any excuse

Then today, we had Sunday lunch - no choice in the veg and it was all served plated up, which I don't like. Roast pork, with some crackling, broccoli, cauliflower cheese, roasted butternut squash, baby carrots and roast potatoes. I had one small potato, but gave the other one to DS2. I had a little bit of the squash, but it was so sweet I actually didn't really like it, and left most of it. I had a couple of very small carrots and gave the rest to DH! No pudding.

I'm considering doing a couple of fast days this week, following on from the 5:2 ADF threads. The idea would be a 16 hour gap after my evening meal, and then 500 calories spread over 1 or 2 meals on the next day. Whilst I do not want to get into the whole calorie counting thing ever, ever again, I reckon that there will be a couple of good LC meals that must be suitably low calorie. I'm not going to attempt it on days when I'm going to the gym, so I'll probably do it on Tuesday to start with - and see how it goes.

happy birthday half!

well i went to lidl to save money and ended up spending more! i couldn't resist trying out their nappies and wipes and of course had to try their face cream since ive heard good things about it, so that must have bumped the price up! still.

got lidls massive pots of yoghurt look forward to trying tomorrow
