If you've poked your head around the door of this thread then please read ourOld Thread, read all the posts, all the links and the links within links and then jump in with both feet to a new, better Way Of Eating (WOE)

Roll Up, Roll Up for the all new, amazing thread for those of us who are trying to eat good, healthy, natural foods while counting our calories and eating LOADS!

We had some brilliant successes on the last thread - inches AND pounds lost and lots of people feeling happier, calmer and more focussed on their goals.

Remember that this is NOT a DIET, it is a healthy way of eating. You will NOT lose 5lbs a week - you might even GAIN weight in the first weeks!

For the first time ever, I've just had to make myself eat something so that I got up to my BMR. And I'd had a beer in the pub. And today wasn't a gym day -- we just took a gentle walk to the park, played frisbee, walked to the pub and then walked home.

mumat39 · 14/06/2012 00:08

Hello. Hope this finds you all well.

I've had a bit of a breakthrough today. Haven't wanted biscuits at all - and haven't had any all day. I did get a bit hungry in the middle of doing a load of washing up and munched on a few rocky road bites, but yesterday I had those and a pack of biscuits, so feeling like maybe I've finished catching up after the few months of 1200 cal diet and years of just not eating well or enough of anything.

So, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the cravings won't return, but today was a very good day. I even made some chocolate crispy cakes for my DC and there's still alot left in the tub as I've not been eating them. AMAZING!!

Shirley, could this mean that my metabolism has been reset? I watched a couple of the videos on the face book page you linked to at the start of this thread and am not sure how I would know if I am out of 'starvation mode', If that makes sense.

Also, I have taken my measurements so will monitor those but a few people seem to have a target/ideal weight they're aiming for. How do I know what my ideal/target weight should be? Or do I keep going until I stop losing weight/inches?

Thanks in advance.

mumat39 · 14/06/2012 00:11

Although I know this is not a diet and more of a way of eating forever, at some point do I go back to eating at TDEE? I realise this is a long way off but I'd just like to understand how this WOE works in the long, forever term?

Thanks again and sorry if I'm asking really daft questions.

addictediam · 14/06/2012 06:53

Last night I really wasn't hungry but didn't like the savoury taste in my mouth. I went searching the cupboards and found a snickers. I didn't even enjoy it.

Anyone have any suggestions of sweet tasting things I could have instead? I was thinking a glass of squash or some frootz.

If anyone has an idea of getting rid of my sweet tooth altogether I'll be greatful

addictediam · 14/06/2012 06:58

Mumat I think when your happy with your weight/size you would start eating tdee. I plan on not being so strict and not weighing everything all the time but using what ive lernt here eg more protine, healthier snacks etc to maintain my ideal weight/size

bunjies · 14/06/2012 09:08

addicted - I usually have a spoonful of Whole Earth unsweetened peanut butter or a couple of squares of dark chocolate as I like to have something sweet with my evening coffee. My current favourite chocolate is the Lidl 81% one which is an amazing 99p. Or what about some full fat greek yoghurt with some honey or maple syrup stirred in?

addictediam · 14/06/2012 09:15

I think i have just had a breakthrough!

My baby has been screaming all morning. So I thought screw it I need chocolate. I took put 9 squares (shes miracle itself as I had more than 1 bar in there), started eating and thought I'm not hungry, I dont wsnt this, I don't need this. So I put 6 back again! Before I would eat a whole oversized bar then the other in the cupboard and phone dh to bring home more

ShirleyKnot · 14/06/2012 09:19

Morning all!

I managed to get a smoothie (without protein powder and flax obv) down DS2 this morning, which was FAB as he's stopped eating the fruit in his lunches lately. It was nice to get 2 of his 5 a day down him first thing! Smile

muma - I doubt that you have "reset" yet TBH. From the masses of stuff I've read I believe it takes about 6 weeks for your body to really trust that you're not going to start starving it again. PATIENCE is all. Grin As to adjusting your levels? My understanding is that when the scales drop 5lbs you should recalculate your TDEE, and adjust your calories accordingly. I've bolded that for all those lucky posters who have seen significant shifts in their scale weight. In the long term/forever once you have achieved a weight/size that you are content with then you will eat at TDEE without the 15% cut.

addicted - Get RID of all the chocolate and biscuits and CRAP. I know that often we say "Oh, but it's not fair on the children" but really? REALLY? If it ain't in the house it can't be eaten. I give my boys a quid on the weekend to go and buy sweets and chocolate at the weekend. That way they're not constantly stuffing it into their faces on a daily basis, the temptation isn't there for ME and the kids will NO WAY let me pinch any of their "treats" Hmm Grin

Berries, dried fruit, dark chocolate and yoghurts can give you that sweet hit you're looking for without too much sugar.

I think I've worked out that funny anomoly on MFP we were discussing on the last thread where total calories on diaries viewed didn't add up to the calories in the actual meals. My diary is set up with 6 meals, when I view a diary which is set up with 3 (for example) it still shows 6 x meals but the last 3 are "empty" IYKWIM? So, if I were looking at a diary with 8 meals, my view would miss off 2 of the meals. Confused

Oh whoops and I forgot to say that MFP only seems to do that when I'm viewing diaries on my mobile app!

Hi all. Well done MrsMango on your weight loss, it is great to see it working for some people. I am in the "struggling not too eat more than my allowance" camp. I am not sure how some of you struggle to eat all your calories, I have no trouble at all! Nuts are my downfall.
Today I started well with a fridge oatmeal and a white coffee and have a salad with boiled egg and ham for lunch. I am really struggling to reach my protein quota but I haven't had time to really look into my macros and see what I am eating too much of.
I love the mobile app, and the barcode scan thingy! I almost like eating things with a barcode so I can enter it into my diary, which kind of defeats the point...
I should manage to go running this lunchtime, and with a simple chicken and veg dinner, I should be well within limits today.
Love reading about all your ideas.

TobyLerone · 14/06/2012 12:15

Well done mumat and addicted on your breakthroughs :o

I am actually in love with fridge oatmeal, and so is DP -- he's eating breakfast on a regular basis for the first time, which is excellent. Today's was blueberry and almond with maple syrup. I've only just eaten it because I had a smoothie for breakfast which kept me full until now. It actually feels quite decadent, even though it's all healthy shiz.

This is how much of a difference getting up off your arse makes: my daily Nike+ points goal, as measured by my Fuelband, is 3000. Nike class this as an 'active' day (2000 is a 'normal' day). When the guy set it up for me, I told him to set it for 3000 every day and I'd see how I got on and maybe put it down to 2000 on workdays, as I sit at a desk all day. But I've managed to reach 3000 every day so far, with a bit of effort.
The other day, when I got to the gym at 4.30pm after work, I was on about 1200 points (and 460 calories burnt so far) and was concerned I wouldn't get my 3000. It was a struggle, but I did it.
Well, this morning I've been doing a slightly different job -- nothing too strenuous, but I was on my feet (mostly stationary) from 9am - 11.30am and ran up and down the stairs about 10 times, sometimes carrying things.

My Fuelband now reads 2826 points and 791 calories burnt, and it's only lunchtime!

So the moral of that long and boring story was get off your arse! It doesn't have to be anything too strenuous at all. But clearly being upright and moving, even minimally, is the way forward.
I know this is common sense. It just surprised me how much difference it made :)

quirkychick · 14/06/2012 14:42

Addictediam- I'm the same with the chocolate as I thought I wanted some of dd1's dairy milk and it tasted horrid and sickly.

I really like the fruity fridge oatmeal (not the banana/choc one). So far strawberry/vanilla, cherry/almond & blackberry/cinnamon all delish. For those not feeling full: make them bigger 1 1/2 portions size. I eat some when I get up before the dcs, after doing some weights. Then I have some later with the dcs before the school run. I don't need a snack then. < ignores carrot cake that would have been rude not to eat>

TobyLerone · 14/06/2012 15:04

I'm so fed up of my gym plans/progress being scuppered by stupid low-level health issues/injuries. So far in the last 6 weeks I've had gastritis, an asthma flare-up, sciatica, a chest infection and now I've hurt my back. I really want to go to the gym, put all my stuff in the car to go after work (optimistically thinking this morning that the back issue would ease off with movement throughout the day), but I just don't want to aggravate it and it's no better. It's a recurrent problem and one which I have some lovely anti-inflammatories from the doctor for, but I can't take them because of the gastritis.

I'm like a bloody old woman. I think I'll give it a miss and will go home and turn out some cupboards instead.

Trills · 14/06/2012 15:14

I've decided I'm not a fan of the fridge oatmeal, but I do like DP's protein shake stuff (he has ti for after the gym) so I think I'll stick to that for my breakfast.

Work from home day today so I can have hardboiled eggs as a snack, unfortunately I'll be away all weekend so I'm not sure what I'll be eating or how much I'll be in charge of it.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 14/06/2012 15:15

Toby that is crap. :(

I was scuppered repeatedly over the winter with a recurring viral thing which triggered my asthma - every time I felt better and could exercise, it flared up again. I still haven't got back into exercising regularly!

It sounds like you are managing to be pretty active even so though. I looked online at a fuel band last night, fainted at the price and decided not to bother Grin

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 14/06/2012 15:16

I feel for you toby! I was managing regular 8-10k runs before I had an operation, then a post op infection and now I have a chest infection too! I think the important thing is to allow yourself time to rest and get better, and remember at least if you have a small calorie deficit you at least won't be gaining weight even if you are not losing it very quickly! You'll be able to get back into the swing of things soon. I lost a few pounds whilst recovering from my op just by watching what I ate, but not too strictly. Hope you are on the mend soon! Smile

TobyLerone · 14/06/2012 15:18

It's so bloody frustrating, isn't it? You want to go and do something, but your body says 'no!'. I really don't want to make it worse, so I'll give it a miss tonight in the hope I can go tomorrow instead. Turning out cupboards will go down as 'cleaning' on MFP instead :o

Yes, the Fuelband is expensive. I would have bought one anyway because I am very easily led and like gadgets, but DP decided to buy mine as an anniversary present, so I was lucky.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 14/06/2012 15:22

Oh and also just read your post about everyday activities Toby, and I totes agree, when recovering from the op I just made sure to do a lot of gentle activity even though I couldn't do anything strenuous and that really seemed to help. However this chest infection has really k Ickes me for six. I feel so physically exhausted so every night I have been doing the bare essentials and then heading straight to bed. Sad managed to get to docs yesterday though and have started antibs today so hopefully i'llbe up on my feet more soon. Smile

TobyLerone · 14/06/2012 15:24

:( sorry you're feeling crappy, housewife. Hope the ABs work fast -- they usually do.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 14/06/2012 15:27

I hope they do too for the sake of the rest of the household, noone sleeps at night for me coughing!!!

Aww I'd love a fuel band! Thing is I can't wear anything round my wrist at work as I work in hospitals. Does anyone make a similar thing just with a chest strap that goes under your clothes? I'm guessing it monitors your hr?

I too love gadgets! Grin

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 14/06/2012 17:09

realhousewife - there is another gadget called a fitbit which is a more traditional pedometer shape, and you can clip it to your waistband or wherever. I have been considering getting one for a while.

I did order the wrist band thing that Apple released, but they stopped making them due to a manufacturing fault.

MinnieBar · 14/06/2012 18:24

Well today DS (5) dislocated his elbow so after witnessing them popping it back in, tonight I will be falling off the healthy eating wagon spectacularly head-first into a giant bar of Crunchie Dairy Milk

Tomorrow is another day?

quirkychick · 14/06/2012 18:28

realhousewife I had a horrible chest infection just before I started this. You really do need to rest and eat well then start exercising slowly.

Tobey hope you feel better soon. I know how you feel. I have had a run of infections kindly shared by the dds. Bad health just sucks.

quirkychick · 14/06/2012 18:29

minniebar your poor ds.
