If you've poked your head around the door of this thread then please read ourOld Thread, read all the posts, all the links and the links within links and then jump in with both feet to a new, better Way Of Eating (WOE)

Roll Up, Roll Up for the all new, amazing thread for those of us who are trying to eat good, healthy, natural foods while counting our calories and eating LOADS!

We had some brilliant successes on the last thread - inches AND pounds lost and lots of people feeling happier, calmer and more focussed on their goals.

Remember that this is NOT a DIET, it is a healthy way of eating. You will NOT lose 5lbs a week - you might even GAIN weight in the first weeks!

tobyu how can you see what % of protine you're eating? i can see the macros (mine are 144 protine, 192 carbs and 64 carbs) but how does that relate in to %?

actually can we talk about the macros alittle bit? i'm so confused with them and some people have got sodium, sugar and fibre on theirs how do you work out how much of thoes you should be eating or is it just a made up figure Confused

addictediam · 13/06/2012 10:17

oh and thanks shirley, i've bookmarked that page and when i get paid i'll order some (ive already gone way over budget for shopping this week Blush)

TobyLerone · 13/06/2012 10:19

Right. To add other things to your macros, go to the My Home tab, then Settings. You can add other things in there if you want. I can't be arsed, personally :o

As for the %ages, I'm still looking. It's easy on the Android app, but if you're looking on a computer it's harder to find. I'll let you know when I find out!

ShirleyKnot · 13/06/2012 10:48

bunj - HEAVY HEAVY HEAVY! Lift heavy, low reps. Lots of info on the old thread about heavy weight lifting.

addicted - in addition to my carbs/protein and fat I also count my fibre (set at 30) and sodium (set at 2500). The fibre is, in part, a holdover from my low carbing days. Some dietry fibre can be "offset" against carbs. I think I got these figures from the MFP EMTWL group.

I can click on my iphone app to see my percentages in a neat little pie chart. I haven't QUITE worked out how to see it when on the computer though (which is a bit of a PITA)

OP posts:
TobyLerone · 13/06/2012 10:50

Nope, I can't find it online either. Have you got an iPhone/Android, addicted? I can tell you where to find it there!

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 13/06/2012 13:57

Has anyone read Dr John Briffa, Escape The Diet Trap? I'm sure someone linked to it on the previous thread. I've just finished it and it's amazing! He says that humans have no need to eat carbs at all, and that studies show eating a high-(good) fat diet results in incredible weight loss.

ShirleyKnot · 13/06/2012 14:04

There's no such thing as an essential carb apparently - BUT what about vegetables?

OP posts:
Alibabaandthe40nappies · 13/06/2012 14:15

Vegetables - or fruit? I can't see how we could get all the various vitamins etc without eating fruit and veg. Or how we could get enough fibre?

The book sounds interesting, but I think I might get annoyed with it if it is too extreme! Grin

I have ordered some sample protein powder. DH is going to think I'm taking up bodybuilding or something Grin

I really wish he would get into this WOE. His TDEE-15% is something like 2700, and that is with him sitting on his arse in his office all day, so it isn't like he would struggle to stick to it and I know he would feel better and be less of a grumpy sod.

He is very lovely really, just exhausted.

ShirleyKnot · 13/06/2012 14:20

See, fruit is just sugar, so I can understand not "needing" fruit at all. The vits and stuff found in fruit can be found in most veg (and other natural foods) but without all that pesky sugar.

I really like a low carb diet, but it really did affect my stamina and strength during exercise - now this might well have been psychological, but even if it were the results were the same!

OP posts:
bunjies · 13/06/2012 15:50

Bloody hell 160 posts already. I can't keep up with this thread.

Whoever recommended the 9bars I think I love you. Bought some today and they are lovely. So thank you very much indeed. Got them in Holland and Barrett where they're having a buy 1 get 1 half price deal on anything. So I bought 4 for under £3 (they're 99p each).

ceebeegeebies · 13/06/2012 16:10

Shirley yes yes yes re the carbs and exercise. If I am going to the gym, I need some carbs inside me (again, probably psychological but I am not prepared to test it by not doin git Wink) so I have to have a bowl of cereal before I go Blush

I really hope this is going to work! I share an office with 3 other women who starve/binge constantly (one of them lives on tinned fruit cocktail when she is in 'starvation' mode, another one will often bring in a tupperware box full of fruit for lunch Hmm). I know they both weigh similar/more than me but are much less active so probably need about 1800 calories to TDEE-15% and they aren't going to get that from fruit. I am dying to spread the news about this WOE but feel that I need to show some results before they will take me seriously and not look at me like this Hmm Hmm - in the meantime, I am having fun eating lots and I suspect they think I have spectactularly fallen off the 'diet' bandwagon Grin

AllMuddledUp · 13/06/2012 16:55

Am just marking place, beyond exhausted today so off for a soak and a rest while DH sorts the kids out.

TooImmatureTurtleDoves · 13/06/2012 16:58

Non-starchy veg are fine. It sounds extreme when you tell someone the conclusions without all the explanation and science behind it, but it really makes sense by the time you've read about all the studies carried out. I'm going to go a bit lower-carb once I've been shopping. You only need soluble fibre (ie, the type in veg and fruit). Roughage in bran etc actually irritates the bowel and causes bloating. It's a type of paleo diet, so yes to meat, fish, eggs, veg, berries etc.

FlyingAardvark · 13/06/2012 17:09

I've managed not to weigh myself all week. I haven't had time to calorie count or anything but have just kept on eating the healthier foods, less carbs. Haven't done as much exercise as I'd have liked as revising but have been walking everywhere including out for a meal and bottle of red.
And today my mam walked into the house and immediatly noticed I now have a waistline, my bloated belly has gone! I noticed yesterday that my work pants were loose around my bum and tops of my thighs aswell so feeling pretty good.

quirkychick · 13/06/2012 17:35

I think I need some protein shake too as I am struggling to eat 30% protein too. I think they said that on one of your earlier links, Shirl.

The flaxseed is great, no hormone spots and glowing skin. Someone told me they thought I was about 34 so I was really chuffed about that.

The cherry almond fridge oatmeal was delish! Tasted like bakewell tart with mareschino (?) cherries.

I have spent a mad day rushing children from one thing to another and have used 1000 calories Shock.

alittlebitshy · 13/06/2012 18:48

This WOE is interesting.
I went out for a smart lunch with my mil today 9at the National Gallery) - chose carefully, knowing i was eating dinner with the family tonight. ended up with a yummy lentil, pea and cashew burger (came in flat bread which i ate and were also yummy), with a green salad on the side. went for cheeseboard instead of pud - couldn't finish the cheese let alone the crackers.

Then this evening i was not hungry for dinner (didn't finish lunch until 2pm) - so i will grab a snack in a bit.... Amazing!

Interested to hear how full these protein shakes make you! Sound delicious!

addictediam · 13/06/2012 18:58

where can you buy flax seed? and does it taste nice? what do you do with it?

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 13/06/2012 19:33

Addicted I have just ordered some from holland and Barrett.
I am planning to add it to shakes, baking, porridge etc.

I am struggling on calories again today, over 400 remaining Confused

alittlebitshy · 13/06/2012 20:39

I am consistently low on protein... what can i eat (esp as snacks i guess, but in general)???? Other than shakes...

ceebeegeebies · 13/06/2012 21:04

I have just realised that it shows you what your net calories are on the Home page of MFP Blush I have been sat there with a calculator when I do exercise to try and work out what my net calories are Blush Grin

Trills · 13/06/2012 21:10

Toby I love you. Nut milk is indeed fnar fnar :o

ceebeegeebies · 13/06/2012 21:17

I had about 200 calories left tonight so have made myself a nutella hot chocolate with full-fat milk - yum yum yum Grin I figured there has to be some protein in nutella and does this count as my own home-made version of hazelnut milk?? Wink

quirkychick · 13/06/2012 21:31

Mmm... nutella hot chocolate. My friend makes squidgy chocolate cake with nutella in the middle.

I am low on cals due to lots of exercise, and low on protein too. I am eating a huge bowl of ready brek with ground almonds.

addicted, flaxseed = linseed. The woman in Holland and Barrett told me. I felt like a right knob! I buy mine in the baking section of Sainsbury's and put them in smoothies, baking, fridge porridge etc.
